TF as Ihave free access) could not connect to GMX. I switched to log in
TF through a pay-for ISP and have no problems connecting.

Okay. I *think* I understand what you're saying. I'm connected by
broadband to Comcast.net. This happens automatically on boot, although
I also have installed a little re-set icon, in case of a failed
connection to Comcast.net. So far have had no need to use that.

My e-mail is running through a domain in Indonesia. It could just be
heavy traffic that was keeping me off--or, it could actually have been
a problem in my TB!. I didn't think to check it out with telnet--but
I've been reminded to do that, now, on this thread. So next time it
happens--although I hope that will be never! :)--I'll run telnet and
tell myself, Don't Panic. :)

TF Therefore, no TB problem.

Thanks for writing. :)

Log info on could not connect to server

2004-02-07 Thread Mary R Bull
Hello Everyone!

Do any of you know whether a later version than 2.00.6 of The Bat!
provides more information in the log than just the bare line could
not connect to server?

I mean, can any version of TB! tell the reason why, as in, for
instance, quoting the server's response?

In most instances, the Internet browsers are still available to me.
It's just the POP3 and SMTP that are not functioning.

Last night I shut TB! down and re-launched several times to no avail.
Then I tried closing TB! and re-booting the computer. No joy there,
either. After about 3 hours of trying (not continuously, of course), I
gave up and went to bed. As I've already mentioned in two earlier
posts here this morning. :)

If my question is better addressed to tbot, I'll take it there.

TIA for help anyone can offer me. :)

Well, my name is not Everyone but I'll try to respond :)

Do any of you know whether a later version than 2.00.6 of The Bat!

 not connect to server?

Mine is 2.01.3, as you can see below, and that's what I get when I can't
connect to the server.

I mean, can any version of TB! tell the reason why, as in, for
 instance, quoting the server's response?

There is no server response to quote because you cannot connect to it.
If you could connect but for some reason you could not login, the error
message would be different.

In most instances, the Internet browsers are still available to me.
It's just the POP3 and SMTP that are not functioning.

It may be that your ISP's server is down. Have you tried to call your
ISP and find out if their mail server is up and running smoothly?

Last night I shut TB! down and re-launched several times to no avail.
Then I tried closing TB! and re-booting the computer. No joy there,

If it is the server being down or not responding, none of that helps.

Hm! That coffee! :)

functioning the problem is likely to be with your ISP's mail servers.

Well, that's logical. And of course I couldn't expect TB! to know why,
if the problem is on the other end. Is there a way, technically, for

future versions, that is?

As I found. :) But back when I was running v. 161, the problem was
often in TB! itself, although all it would say was could not connect
to server. But in that version it was an almost daily occurence--the
program would seem to time itself out after being up awhile and a
re-launch or a re-boot would seem to fix it.

Anyway, re-launching and re-booting gave me something to do, like the
prospective father whom a country doctor has told to go down to the
kitchen and boil some water. :)

M Hm! That coffee! :)

Yes! Time for another cup. :)

Does it happen often?

As, Roelof mentioned it might be related to your firewall, depending
on certain factors(i.e.: if your e-mail client can't connect
consistently).

Also, it can be possible that the e-mail server gets taken off-line
for maintenance from time to time, or it crashed, or got disconnected
from the internet for some other reasons. I get the same message when
the server, where the mailserver is running, is being rebooted.
