I agree. I had this problem when first converting to version 4 from
version 1, and still do (it really wasn't worth the upgrade). Version
1 didn't have the problem, at least not as bad as it is now. One would
think that a program that relies so much on folders would have some
intelligent code handling them.

Duplicated and lost folders

2009-06-25 Thread Privateofcourse
Hello TBUDL,

Earlier I was dragging some folders around in TB! using CTRL+ALT to make
them subfolders, and suddenly noticed that the folders I had dragged to the
new location had actually duplicated. In fact, when I renamed the original
folders and the folder copies the corresponding folder names changed to
match. Somehow the folders were displaying in the old location and the new
location. Closing TB! and reopening did nothing, and neither did running the
tasks in the maintenance centre. So I decided to delete the folders in the
new location and then open and close TB! and of course the original folders
were gone as well :-/ Luckily I had a backup made an hour before to restore
the two folders.

However, on opening TB! again I also noticed that eight folders had
mysteriously vanished. I did the SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+L trick and the folders were
found and recovered.

Dragging folders in TB! has always been a bit of buggy affair but I thought
this situation would have improved by now. And why can't the lost folder
SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+L trick be integrated into the maintenance centre? Surely
that would make sense?

This did annoy me a bit more than usual...but then it is hot and clammy
here.

Hello,

(2008-06-11 15:53:20 GMT).

I used to have a folder called Skiing 2009. I can no longer find
this in TB!'s folder tree.

It's there on disk, and I can see e-mails in the MESSAGES.TBB file.
I've tried searching within TB for unique strings in those messages,
but they're definitely not there.

Shift-ctrl-alt-L doesn't find this folder.

I tried removing the ACCOUNT.FLB from the root folder but this had the
adverse effect of losing well over half my folders and accounts.

Restoring the original seemed to fix that particular scare.

Can anyone suggest a path forward?

This particular instance isn't critical, but I'm nervous that I've
lost other directories and would like to look into this further.

TIA,

If I'm the 'Jack' to whom you're referring, my problem was that only
certain messages fetched the morning before the computer crash went
missing. We never lost an entire folder.

Had I known where TB kept it's messages in Vista, I could have
retrieved them from my off-site Carbonite backup. However, in my
clumsy attempts to find the storage location I accidently allowed
Carbonite to overwrite a good backup with a corrupted one which I
accidently created.

FWIW, I have since set up TB to perform daily backups, have told TB to
'keep messages on server for 5 days', have re-configured the computer
to NEVER sleep and have re-configured Carbonite to back up only very
late in the evening when the computer is no longer used for that day.

It's never too late to lock the barn door. You'll eventually get more
horses. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck.

to delete the ACCOUNT.FLB file for the main folder.

But now none of the email filters I had for the lost folder are

Lost folders

2008-06-11 Thread Jack
Hello,

I was trying to move a sub-folder out of the folder it was in into
another folder. I was doing this by clicking on the sub-folder and
then using the CTRL + arrow key to move it. It turns out there is a
bug with this version of TB so that when the folder being moved
reaches its parent folder, the selected item gets switched to the
parent folder and that folder gets moved. So instead of moving a
sub-folder, the whole main folder gets moved.

I didn't realize this had happened and when I saw the sub-folder
hadn't moved, I tried it again, not realizing it was in a different
location already. The same thing happened but now the main folder was
buried in a different folder, due to having done it twice. The end
result is that the original main folder that should not have been
changed at all had disappeared.

If I look at the actual disk structure, using a file manager, I can
see the missing folder but it doesn't show up in TB. I tried using
SHIFT+CTRL_ALT_L but it said nothing found. I tried creating a new
folder and copied all of the files from the missing folder to it (using a
file manager) but that new folder was still empty. I tried deleting
the TBI file for it but the sub-folders would still not appear. I
contacted TB support and was told if SHIFT+CTRL_ALT_L doesn't work I
must be doing something wrong, so there's no help there.

It was suggested that I add a new folder, create a sub-folder and then
use the message import menu item to read in the messages from the lost
folders. That worked. I had went through about 20 of the lost 200 or
so sub-folders when I thought I should restart TB to make sure the
messages were being read correctly. When I did that, the new folder
was no longer present.

I restored TB's directory to a different location from a daily disk
backup I do and then copied over the missing folder and its contents.
Still didn't show up. It appears there is a main index file that has
become corrupted.

What a mess! So the bottom line is that I have a missing folder with
thousands of messages that I use for my bossiness that I can't get to.
Please tell me there is a way to fix this.

Using 4.0.2

You were moving folders and lost track of one. Is it possibly buried

and bury a folder when moving.

I hope it is that easy but please don't shoot the messenger if it

Not at all. I'm desperate and appreciate any help I can get. :) The
folder is buried in another. I can see it by looking at the disk
structure. However, I can't see it from within TB. And if I try to
create a new folder with the same name as the missing one, a popup
says that the name is already in use. I've found that if I added the
missing sub-folders and then copy the TB files, instead of importing
them, that the new folder will be remembered. So I can use this
method, even though it will take, almost, forever. But when I am done,
I'm not sure if I can just rename it to the original. It might end up
deleting the contents and I'll have to start over.

1. Exit TB!

I'm afraid the connection between your attachments and their messages

it has saved me plenty of times. Also if you're running windows, most
UPS systems provide a cable to allow you to get the UPS to shut your

Hello Jonathan Angliss,

ruminated:

Uninterruptible Power Supply [UPS]

Checklist to hook it up!

JA 1. Shut down PC
JA 2. Unplug PC
2a. CONNECT THE INTERNAL BATTERY. They are shipped now with
the battery disconnected due to new shipping safety
   regulations.

I've found a total of 26 of these so far this month,
running without the batteries connected, and the warning
in the interface software (if installed) DISABLED! This
is a serious issue, and should be addressed.
JA 3. Plug in UPS
3a. Allow the battery to be charged for AT LEAST 24 hours!
Failure to do this is a major cause of SHORT BATTERY LIFE
throughout the life of the UPS [RTFM]
JA 4. Plug in PC to UPS
4a. Install the monitoring software (Follow instructions or
   RTFM!).
4b. Connect the data cable (DB9 - RS232 or USB) first [RTFM!]
JA 5. Switch on UPS
JA 6. Switch on PC

JA Normally the quick start guides cover everything :)

Always RTFM (Read The F[insert your favorite adjective here!]

Ah, but there is a chance of a storm (imminently) cutting power
where Mary is, so I guess she must hope there is sufficient time
to charge before that happens! We shall see. The battery
charges at the same rate whether the UPS is being used or not, so
it really doesn't matter UNLESS there is a failure SOON :-)

Some of the LARGER UPS systems operate on the inverter (connverts
the battery DC 12V to AC 120V) at all times, so that there is NO
delay in switching over to backup power. There is a relay that
switches over (in milliseconds) in the smaller units. The delay
is not noticed by most systems, but larger power-hungry server
banks might be adversely affected.

I guess I have pontificated enough on this, so Mary . . GO GET
IT!! A 450VA unit should be fine for your use.

you only need a Backups Office 350 or 500. You just plug the printers into the SURGE
protected ports on the APC. The APC has UPS protected slots for the CPU
and Monitor, and the rest are SURGE protected slots, for printers,
scanners... that way, when the power goes out, you are only draining the
battery for the CPU and monitor.
as Spike said, don't forget to open the UPS and plug the battery in...

All you guys and girls running out to get a UPS the above is something
you definitely want on a UPS.

A UPS is first and foremost meant to prevent you losing data with brown
and black outs. Therefore the PC should close itself down (after the
power has been gone for a short while), in a normal and controlled way
without losing data, when the power is gone.
Remember you might not be there to shut it down manually!!

The battery is also not (normally) there to let you work on for extended
period. If you want that you will have to pay big bucks and reserve
lots of space for the UPS, depending on how long you want to keep on
working after the power is gone.

A final note, printers, scanners and all nonessential equipment should
not be connected tot the UPS because it drains the battery. You could
consider connecting your telephone system to the UPS if you have one
that needs external power (think SOHO).

Price tip: Some companies sell used UPS equipment and there is lot
around for good price since the Internet bubble has blown :(
Ask for a minimum waranty on the batteries if you buy one used.

the APC UPSes have 2 types of power to plug into, the UPS protected and
just surge protected. Usually 3 of each.

folders and their properties are stored in ACCOUNT.FLX file.

There is your problem. Unfortunately, we don't know what corrupted or
deleted this file on your system, but it certainly wasn't TB. I won't
insult you by asking you to check for malware or by asking whether you
had properly shut down Windows the night before; you'd know that.

The beauty of having backups is shown once again. ;-)

PS: I believe something is wrong with your system. Also your keyboard

I had to uninstall TB! a week or so ago but I had backups of all the

every thing back as before including filters and all my font settings.

You do back up don't you?

Lost folders

2002-10-15 Thread Britt Malka

Tuesday, October 15, 2002

Dear tbudl,

I had my SecureBat! installed on a small part of my partitioned
harddisk.

All of a sudden I couldn't send a message from my account malka.com. I
looked in the log, and it said that I couldn't receive either, because
there were no more space left on the account. I thought at first that
the problem was with our Internet Supplyer.

Several times The Bat! told me that there was a fawlt with folder
somehting, and if I wanted to correct it now. I started out with
answering yes, but it seemed to give problems to the program, so I
answered no.

Then I shut down SecureBat!

When I opened it up again, about a 120 of my folders in malka.dk had
disappeared.

It seems that they are still on the harddisk. I have now moved
SecureBat!, but I still cannot see the missing folders.

I have searched the helpfile and the archive, with no luck. Have
already tried Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L several times, have tried to backup and
reinstall, have tried refresh folders, have tried the program
BackUpTheBat! which seems to find 150 of the folders, but when I
import messages, it is only old, deleted messages that comes up.

Anybody here have an idea?

When I still have 151 folders in Explorer, they must still be there,
mustn't they?

You could try to close SB, copy your folder structure to another
disk, delete all messages.tb? in your account tree. Start SB again,
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L again, see if it works now.
If it doesn't work, create your folder structure manually (Yuck!).
After you've restored your folder structure, close SB and move your
messages.tbb files into your new folder tree (take care that you
delete any existing messages.tb? files, both .tbb and .tbi)
Start SB to see whether it helped.

As I've never worked with SB, I'm just supposing the message base is
still called messages.tbb with a messages.tbi index.

Lost folders

2001-06-19 Thread Peter Palmreuther

Hello Marck,

On Monday, June 18, 2001 at 10:03:33 PM you wrote (at least in part):

MDP You can move the folders into the MAIL\ folder hierarchy and then use
MDP the undocumented Ctrl-Alt-Shift-L hot key to recover missing
MDP folders.

*DAMN* (sorry :-( ) why's this key-combo undocumented? *g*
I just wanted to write to TB's UDL because of a problem yesterday appeared as
I read THIS information, that I could have needed yesterday :-(

OK, the problem:

My girlfried is using TB! for a while now. Although she's not as firm with TB!
as me, she's not dumb :-)
Yesterday she called me to tell me two mail folders have been disappeared.
Suddenly. Without her interaction. the day before yesterday they were both
visible in the account-tree, yesterday she missed them.
Although she randomly does things she can't exactly explain (I've never
clicked this link! ... you know *g*) she's ABSOLUTELY sure she did NOT delete
this folders. This sounds reasonable, as TB! let you confirm before deleting a
folder.
The 'magic' thing is: not only the folders in the account tree disappeared, I
wasn't able to find ANY folder with a similar name on the harddisk. Neither in
the mail base dir, nor somewhere else on her harddisk.
There were two filters I created to automatically store incoming messages to
that two folders ... they were not deleted, BUT: the destination folder in
BOTH were 'Inbox' what was not what I've set them to.
I ran through every single folder in her three account and browsed deleted
messages: I did not found them :-( She did not made a Compress on any
folder, so all in all it's very mysterious.
She used v1.49 as she did not allowed me to update her TB! *g*
I know the information I have and give in this mail aren't enough to track
down a bug, but did something similar already happened to somebody else???

Marck: do you know where Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L looks for lost folders?
Could this help to re-find them?

Thx for any comment, and if there's any help: too :-)

What is "winRAR"? I've never heard of it before.

I use it instead of WinZip. Take a look at:

Never thought of that. This means that "thebat.exe" (the full
installation) and "thebat.exe" (the actual program, the executable,
The Bat!, the application, ...) should have different names.

I certainly agree with this. For example, "thebat.exe" could be called
"batinst.exe", whereas "thebat.exe" could keep the name "thebat.exe".

Hi Thomas,

TF Never thought of that. This means that "thebat.exe" (the full
TF installation) and "thebat.exe" (the actual program, the executable,
TF The Bat!, the application, ...) should have different names.

TF I certainly agree with this. For example, "thebat.exe" could be called
TF "batinst.exe", whereas "thebat.exe" could keep the name "thebat.exe".

That's why I always put the version in the file name when I
download a new version.

BTW, somebody interested in the_bat11.exe from nov-98? :-)

The bat of happiness fluttered its wings and whispered to me that

The icon on the install program (the little postage stamp with the
bat, same as the executable) doesn't help either.

Since there isn't a 16-bit Windows version and you don't have to worry
about 8.3 filenames, why not call it TheBat_Setup.exe?

I stick it in an Install directory in TheBat!'s tree (along with my
registration page) whenever I get it, but I could see where somebody
much less perspicacious than I might put the wrong file in the wrong
place some day. Of course, that could *never* happen to me.
