Norton AntiVirus 2003: Using Anti-Virus Plug-Ins

2004-10-03 Thread David M. Dickerson
Hello, everyone.
I am evaluating The Bat! 3.0 under Windows XP Professional (SP 1),
with Norton SystemWorks Professional 2003, which includes Norton
AntiVirus (NAV) 2003.
Following the instructions in the on-line help, I went to the
'Options|Preferences' menu and, in the 'Preferences' tree, and
clicked on the 'Anti-Virus' leaf, but Norton AntiVirus has no
antiviral plug-ins (.BAV files).
I checked the following FTP site, but saw no plug-in that appears
to pertain to NAV:
ftp://ftp.gin.cz/pub/mswindows/the_bat/plugins/antivirus/
On a Polish Web site about The Bat!, I found a reference to a RITLabs
FTP site containing .BAV files (ftp://ftp.ritlabs.com/pub/the_bat/bav/),
but the site does not exist anymore.
How can I use Norton AntiVirus 2003 with The Bat! 3.0? Other e-mail
programs that I have been testing automatically find NAV and a
progress bar appears, for example, when I send an e-mail message and
Norton is checking it. (I always check outgoing, as well as incoming,
e-mail messages for viruses.)
I have read the RITLabs Knowledge Base article, "Using Norton Antivirus"
(http://www.ritlabs.com/kb/idx/8/003/article/), which concludes by
stating that the "last version of NAV works transparently and doesn't
require any changes from user's side." The article, unfortunately,
does not refer to versions of NAV by number, just in the relative
terms of "old" and the "last". (The KB article is dated
25 October 2003.)
The "last" version may refer to NAV 2004 -- or to 2003, which I have.
(I did not upgrade to NSW Pro 2004, because of bad reviews by users.
I simply keep my virus definitions current, my subscription renewed,
and I run the program frequently, usually, daily.)
I have also searched Symantec's support KnowledgeBase, but the only
relevant article was for NAV 2001 under Windows 98/Me, with an old
version of The Bat!, so I am not sure that the information in the
article is at all relevant (and The Bat! did not use an anti-virus
plug-in in that version).
I have the options in The Bat! 3.0 selected to check both incoming
and outgoing messages for viruses, but The Bat! apparently does not
try to find antiviral software automatically and it will accept
only a .BAV plug-in file -- but perhaps NAV 2003 is "working
transparently." :-|
Obviously, I do not want to receive or spread computer viruses,
so I would be grateful for any suggestions.
Thank you very much, in advance!
Cordially,
David

On the Ritlabs web site choose the "Knowledge Base" for The Bat!.
There you'll find links to various plugins and macros that other folks

POPFile is an e-mail proxy. It layers itself between The_Bat! and your
pop server. POP(3) server > Popfile > The_Bat!

Popfile connects to your e-mail server and gets your mail and

I can't compare it with K9, since I haven't used K9, but yes, Popfile is
compatible with TB (and any other pop email client, since it sits
between the server & the client - an advantage to *not* being a
plug-in). Popfile works very well ime (I also use it to sort more than
spam).

Are there ANY (anti-spam) plug ins?

2003-09-16 Thread Rich Gregory
Are there ANY plug-ins at all that work with TB (especially anti-spam plug
ins)? (Bayesit cannot count as it locks up TB from starting at all!)

What plug-ins of ANY KIND (anti-spam or otherwise) is ANYONE actually using
for the BAT?

I think I'd prefer an anti-spam plug-in to a proxy, spam-interceptor type
program so that less resources are running on my PC. Is that sound
logic? *or* I suppose 'bad' plug ins (aka Bayesit) just as likely to
cause me trouble as a hog-gy program ever would! No?

We have Kaspersky Personal here and it scans everything without any
plug-in ( there isn't one ) so the virus protection window doesn't
even show Kaspersky !!

Doing a test mailing using a file known to trigger Kaspersky ( not the
Eicar test ! ) completely locked the outbox until the offending
message was deleted so we know it works - and works well :-)

Ok. That did help. It wasn't my answer but it got me started in the
right direction. I used that info and *tweaked* it a bit.

As briefly as possible, here is what I did...

I set TB's filter exactly as shown at that URL except I added the HIDDEN
option on the actions tab and modified paths to suit my system. I
wrote my own batch file so it would basically do what I wanted with
AVG. Here is my batch file (scan.bat) which I keep in my AVG folder.
It's refered to in the "run external program" box.

---
copy C:\winxp\temp\av\*.* C:\winxp\temp\av\temp\*.*
PING 1.1.1.1 -n 2 -w 1000 >NUL
del c:\winxp\temp\av\temp\*.* /q
del c:\winxp\temp\av\*.* /q
---

-line 1 simply tries to copy the files that The Bat extracted from
"AV" to "AV\TEMP". This allows AVG's resident scan engine to detect
any virus present and display a window.

-line 2 is the only way I could find to create a pause in a batch
file. Without the pause, things went so quickly that it could only
detect the first virus if there were multiples.

-lines 3 & 4 are just cleanup.

To state the obvious...Winxp is my windows folder. I created the "AV"
folder within the standard Windows temp folder and the "TEMP" folder
within it. You can use whatever folders you like but the paths must
be changed accordingly. My "AV" folder is refered to in the "extract
attached files to the specified directory" box under the actions tab.

I had tried following the directions from the above URL to setup the
DOS version of AVG to scan the files, but there were problems with
errors and it took forever to load the program for each run. It
required a separate run for each E-mail with attachments.

Good luck if anyone else wants to give it a try. It should work this
way with ANY virus scanner as long as you have it set to scan files on
access.

One final question...is it possible for a virus to activate with a
simple copy command if there is no resident scanner active?

All what is checked will work, all what doesn't will not.

By default "receive" and "delete" is checked. So you have to un-check
"receive" and leave "delete" as is, if you don't like some mail.

When you open the Mail Dispatcher and it connects, you see the
different columns. If a message is only checked for deletion, TB! does
send the DELETE command to the server.

If a message is not deleted, either the command is not received or not
understood by the server.

Re: AV Plug-ins vs. Not

2002-04-22 Thread ETM

I have had two occasions when TB and my AV program circled the
campfire as TB downloaded to a tmp file and the AV program
notified me I had received an exploit virus. On each occasion, I
went out to the web and deleted the offending emails at the
server. Then it was necessary to delete TB's tmp files to
satisfy (shut up) the AV program. I had the impression that using
dispatch would allow me to get to those emails and to delete them
at the server level. However, I was not successful. How does
one actually use dispatch from within TB to delete mail at the
server?

Both of the occasions involved false positives when
someone had written asking about the html exploit virus and
quoted a bit too much of the string involved but it gave
me a chance to see the interaction between TB and the AV program.

I agree. And this is only spot which is not quite clear to me: if some
nasty html code arrive in mail (not attached but "embedded") would a
real-time AV monitor detect it? Since we are using Bat, which has own
rendering html machine, and since the trojan we consider here is
writen for IE engine, it seems that there is no need to be nervous.
Any way, a good AV monitor should discover *any* virus activities,
regardless way of its execution. So if I could go to see this message
with embedded html, and if I activate some nasty link, script or
whatever - then AV should react, in a same secure way as if virus
would start from an attachment. Am I right?

I just cannot see why would POP scanner discover something which is
not possible for HD scanner?

If this AV database would discover something during POP scanning, it
must discover it on HD too.

Sure no problem... it is an often overlooked preference setting. There are
actually two settings that you should set:

1) Options/Editor Preferences/General... down at the bottom you will see
"Quote Name Limit". This one is really for your benefit, and should
reflect the number of characters *you* would like to see behind ">"
that turn up as quoted material.

2) Accounts/Properties/Templates/Reply... under "Sender information used
for quotation"... you can set it as you like, but "Initials" or even
"First Name" seems to be more a norm than having both the first and last
name. I would say 50% choose "None" or "Initials".

While you are in the Account Properties... at the bottom of the page you
will see two little check boxes. You should make sure that only the bottom
one is checked.

Here is what AVG has to say about it (I pasted from AVG's own help
files):

"AVG Resident Shield is a program that is installed on your computer as a
part of the AVG System. It runs automatically when Windows starts.
The program monitors important system functions related to all your
internal files and removable media. Once you access a file from your
hard drive, a floppy, CD-ROM or Web site, AVG's Resident Shield checks
the data before you are allowed to work with it to insure it is virus
free. This check is so quick, you will not notice a delay in
operation. "

Also my experience with AVG was that it notifies me as I download
e-mail. If a e-mail is infected, it will grab the infected file and
place it in the virus vault. This happens when I am downloading, not
just when I open the e-mail or the attachment. I like that, it never
gets a chance to be opened or to infect. You have the choice once a
file is in the vault to try and clean it or you can delete it
entirely. Very seldom is one "cleanable" (IMHO).

I have never experienced this. AVG from grisoft allows the downloads to
finish, and only lets me know that I have a virus when I go to open the
attachment/email. Doesn't affect downloading whatsoever whichis logical
as a virus is not going to execute just by being downloaded.

receiving messages and will try to download the same messages over and
over, because the server doesn't delete them.

Sorry I don't think so, because attachments are encoded AVG can not check
them with out the plug in.

However AVG will / should check any attachments when you want to run it
because they get un-packed/extracted first.

Actually AVG has a resident shield that does monitor all traffic
Internet or otherwise. Even without the plug in it would work,
theoretically anyway. According to info at the grisoft.com web,
every time you access a file whether it on a disk or during a download
"resident shield" is checking / monitoring / runs in the background.
I don't know the advantages over the plug in, I am using both, I
figured it TB web site had it available for download they did so for a
reason. But as a newbie I have limited knowledge on the need /reasoning of
it. All I know is it works for me.

AV Plug-ins vs. Not

2002-04-19 Thread Michael Disabato

Folks,

I've seen the discussions concerning anti-virus plug-ins, and I'm
wondering what advantage that has over a program that monitors all
incoming traffic.
