Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Word 2002. This update
resolves a flaw in Word 2002 that could allow unsigned macros in
specially crafted documents to run automatically regardless of the
macro security level settings of the user. This Word 2002 update is

Happened to me this morning, and I was so paranoid about a possible

Then I deleted it and the message, separately in TB!, and purged and

Didn't even think about it having been a returned TBUDL message.

So thanks for the info, with subsequent peace of mind for me. :)

F-Secure automatically scans message bodies but not attachment
interiors. It will, however, scan the attachment if you click on it
and warn you if you've opened a worm or virus.

TDS-3 also has something called exec protection and will warn if you
click on a dangerous executable.

I simply preferred not to click on the attachment, in case my
protective programs *might* misfire.

Really, I considered not even downloading the message from the Message
Dispatcher when I saw it. But then, I do have a couple of friends who
use wannado, and at first I thought I'd just see what message was
being returned. Having it returned as an attachment completely spooked
me. grin

If the attachment is a file with .msg extension, you can click on it,
because it will open in TB (make sure this extension is active in
Options / Preferences / Applications, though). If it is an executable

I am not very sure about Word. Does Word use macros? If so, it's a
yes. Excel file can contain macros, so that's a file you should scan
(or disable macros from within Excel itself) and if in doubt, delete.

I think Microsoft announced a patch to fix the macros vulnerability,
some time back.

Unfortunately, MS doesn't like to let me download patches, ever since
I got XP SP2. Wants to Update XP with Automatic Updates, but of course
doesn't sent MS-Office patches that route. I couldn't get this done,
even though I was using the Internet Explorer as browser, trying to do
it.

I don't scan the attachments my sister sends me, but she always sends
me an announcing e-mail before she sends the attachment.

I think you would be pretty safe to open any attachment, provided
always that you have a good AV program running and *additionally* a
background-running Trojan detector (the only one I know of that does
that is TDS-3) and a spyware detector, like SpywareBlaster, also
running in the background. Again, SpywareBlaster is the only program I
know that catches Spyware as it appears and doesn't just remove
after-the-fact.

I happen to be a super-cautious person. That's why I go to the
inconvenience of scanning any attachment that I wasn't expecting to
arrive.

it doesn't offer real time protection UNLESS you have 'application

Yes. I do have it enabled. But that's a very good point and should be
made here, for anyone who might decide to use it because I praised it.

Ah. I didn't know they had real-time protection.

The very fine Trojan Remover from Simply Super Software, which I also
keep on my machine, does not offer a real-time protection option--just
will clean after-the-fact. Thanks for mentioning the others.

And of course, any anti-malware program will only be at its optimum if
one keeps it updated. :)

Word files are only dangerous if you open them with Word. If you want
to view them safely, you can download and install Microsoft's free Word
