If you have a backup from before you did the upgrade, I suggest you reinstall
the old version and restore the backup, then upgrade through all intermediate
major versions:

to run TB once after each upgrade, maybe also check a template or two)

I am aware of Account Properties --> Templates and Viewer templates, but

Or you could change the address on your primary account in TB! to the

Replicate all options & templates PC to PC

2017-11-03 Thread Rich Gregory
Hello Fellow Bats

I have TB! setup nearly as perfectly as desired on 1 PC.
Is there a way to easily replicate the entire installation onto another PC?
I do NOT need to do a full backup & restore as the messages and accounts
already exist on both PCs, I just want all options, preferences templates etc
for all accounts the same on both PCs.

Thx

Did you simply try to install version 7 over version 2.12? Do you mean that
after the installation, some of the templates are lost? Or the template text is
not properly interpreted?

Please compress all The Bat! 2 configuration with an archiver like ZIP.

The Bat! version 7 should take all version 2 configuration automatically. If it
won't, send me this ZIP and we will try to figure out and fix a problem, if any.

Updating from 2.12 templates

2017-10-06 Thread Rich Gregory
Hello TBUDL,

Moving to this new TB! from v 2.12.

I'll need help tweaking templates as my old install had some QTs that
I cannot find a way to move over as well, so recreating some of that
functionality will most likely have to be moved to regular templates I
assume.

For example, (not even knowing if the question makes sense w/o seeing
the old QTs) how would this translate:

%if:'%ABToHandle'<>'%ABToFirstName':'%ABToHandle':'%ABToFirstName'":"%ABToFirstName"+)

Thanks folks.

Great - I have never used common QTF though it seems now that might
have been easier allround. Is it possible to copy the Account.QTB file
of one specific account into the Common location and that way turn the

Modifying templates

2015-05-04 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUD Listers,

My wife insists in using HTML in all her email correspondence and I'm
running into a major stumbling block regarding font. She does not use
any AB templates so all messages should be generated from ACCOUNT
PROPERTIES or FOLDER PROPERTIES templates. I was not able to change
the font for NEW messages by modifying the templates in either of
those two locations and finally had to go to
OPTIONS-PREFERENCES-VIEWER/EDITOR-PROFILE LAYOUT to achieve the change
in NEW messages. She is using version 6.0.12 of TB! Home Edition.

My immediate problem is that although I was able to change the NEW
MESSAGE font from within PROFILE LAYOUT, I cannot change the font in
the REPLY template. In fact, if I change the font from within
ACCOUNT-PROPERTIES-TEMPLATES-REPLY and click OK the box closes as you
would expect. However if I immediately re-open the above template, I
see that the changes I made were not saved. This happens in either
ACCOUNT PROPERTIES or FOLDER PROPERTIES (regardless of which folder is
in focus).

I'm assuming I'm missing something here but I can't see what it is.

Fine by me; I would not see them.

I send and read plain text because, as far as I'm concerned, an email
is a message and not a presentation. If any of my correspondents
choose to add bells and whistles, I do not see them so they cannot

The salutation and sig in the AB template are both set to Times New Roman 14pt
and the format is already set to HTML.

Well, I was going to reply that that priority didn't work for me until I
realized that although I was replying to an existing denizen of my AB, although
it was the same name, it was written from a new email address. Once I added
that new email address to her list of email addresses, the AB reply template

That is the priority given in the TB! help file; there are also
AB Group Templates, which are not mentioned in the help file but I
think come after AB Templates and before Folder Templates.

Wow, that's drastic.

At work I am forced to use Outlook, but do not use HTML except on the
very odd occasion that I need to add into the email _body_ something
that cannot easily be shown in plaintext. The vast majority of the
time, such content sits more happily in my mind as an attachment. I
send and receive dozens of emails per day with (mainly) Word, Excel,
and PDF attachments. I only send an HTML email a small handful of
times per year, and typically only receive one or two per month that
cannot be usefully viewed in plaintext

Many of my colleagues use HTML for all emails, pointlessly as the only
thing they could not have done in plaintext is a fancy or coloured
font in their signature block. (-;

Actually, that is what I do.

I have discovered that if I execute the QT manually, i.e. I type it's
handle and then press CTRL+SPACE, it works fine. If I use %QInclude to
call it from the template, it fails.

How can that be? I don't know, but I have finally given up on TB! for

Quick templates and html

2014-04-07 Thread Robin Anson
Batfolk,

Has anyone any experience with using html templates and quick
templates together?

I have to use html for business purposes (company standard) and I have
an extensive set of quick templates that I use for formatting emails
etc. However the two do not seem to mix well.

When I use my existing templates with an html message template, I end
up with a host of delimiters and blank lines in the message that
simply don't appear in a plain text message.

I have noted, for instance, that if I include a line in the html
message template containing only the following characters
%-
it produces a blank line in message. In a plain text message it
produces no output. Unfortunately I use lots of such lines in my quick
templates to help make it readable

I haven't yet sorted out why the delimiters I use in my quick
templates (e.g. ", ', %, $, ^, etc) appear in the output when I use an
html message template.

Ian A. White reported success with that method. I think he probably
previously had all his QTs under one account.

I had most of my QTs under the one account, so copied that ACCOUNT.QTB
to the Mail directory. I had a small number in other accounts, and
after spending a few minutes experimenting with copying from one QTB
file to another decided my time was better spent copying the content
of my few QTs remaining in other accounts into newly-created common
QTs. I found when I had them all as common QTs and deleted my old
ACCOUNT.QTB files in the individual accounts, they came back when
re-starting The Bat! and the individual account QTs reappeared.
Leaving empty text files called ACCOUNT.QTB in their place stopped
this,. The explanation Marek Mikus was that QTs had previously been
stored in files called ACCOUNT.QTN. Experimentation showed that
presence of ACCOUNT.QTN in the absence of ACCOUNT.QTB triggered The
Bat! to convert the QTs to the new file format and generate a new
ACCOUNT.QTB.

First, thank you very much. After experimenting with a test group of
test contacts, I finally figured out how to set this up. Once you
explained that I could not use the template macro in a regular message
and only within a template, it was easier for me to get this to work.
This may be elementary, but if one doesn't regularly use macros and
templates

Now, I have another related problem: You wrote that I need to create
the entire message as a "Mass Mailing Template." Yet, I want the
message to have as its body the salutation, followed by an image that
is an invitation that I created in MS Publisher and saved as a jpeg
file. In a regular message, I can just copy and paste, so long as I
have the regular message set to HTML and not plain text. How do I
insert my jpeg invitation into the body of the mass mailing, so that
when the message is opened by the recipient, the recipient sees the
image of the invitation?

Secondly, how do I request reading and/or delivery confirmation with
a mass mailing?

You create your entire message as a "Mass Mailing Template". These are
Quick templates, created in the Quick Template editor that have the
"Mass Mailing Template" checkbox ticked. The template will include the
macros for attribution and manipulation of the To field as well as the
entire body of the message you wish to send. You can get very clever
by using other fields of the address book to conditionally add or
remove whole paragraphs, but that means getting fairly sophisticated.

There is another way. In the Address book, highlight the group then,
from the Address book menu choose "File -> New -> Mass Mailing using
Template". This will give you all the options you need to generate
individual emails to every member of the chosen group (or the
currently selected subset of specific entries) using the template you
wrote your mass mailing message template in.

I tried to place "%ABtoHANDLE" <%TOADDR> in the "to" field, but that

This didn't work either. I wrote in the body of the e-mail (without
the quotation marks) the following:

"Dear %ABtoHANDLE,"

However, my test e-mails were received with the above text, as if
"%ABto HANDLE" was a name like any other rather than a signal to
insert the text of what actually was in the handle for each contact,
such as "John, Jane and Charlie"

This is the exact purpose for which the Mass Mailing feature was
designed. It will mean generating individual emails for each
recipient, but that seems to be the requirement anyway.

You can use
%TO='"%ABtoHANDLE" <%TOADDR>'

sending messages to a group; templates

2012-07-08 Thread Achdut18
Hi, everyone,

I want to send an invitation to a group. I created a group of contacts
("Invitation to Friends and Relatives"). However, I want each
recipient to see only their own name and e-mail address in the "to"
field. If I put the group name in the "to" field, such as "Invitation
to Friends and Relatives " the every display name and e-mail
address appears in the "to" field of a recipient's e-mail. On the
other hand, if I place either individual e-mail addresses OR the group
name in the BCC field, NO address appears in the header. That is, the
"to" field is blank.

(1) Is there a way to send an e-mail to a group such that ONLY the
recipient's e-mail address appears in the "to" field?

Related to this question is how the recipient's address actually
appears. Let's say John Doe is married to Jane and has an e-mail
address, john...@gmail.com. When I send an invitation to John and
Jane, I just don't want the "to" field to show the e-mail address, or
even John's first name. Rather, I would want the "to" field to show
something like:

John and Jane Doe

I thought I could set up each contact's nickname to reflect how I
would want the names to appear in the "to" field, but it appears that
only the display name is grabbed for this purpose. Can I change it
so that the nickname is grabbed? Right now, in order to get the
names to appear the way I want them is to place in the first name
field for the contact, the following: "John and Jane" Is this correct, is this
what I have to do in order to yield an address that appears:

John and Jane Doe

(3) Finally, I want to personalize each e-mail by placing into the the
e-mail's salutation whatever I have placed in a contact's Nickname.
Sometimes it will be "Dear John and Jane" but other times the
salutation will be "Dear, John, Jane, and Charlie" where "Charlie" is
John and Jane's minor child, who lives with them. So, I
created a quick template with the following content (following
the guidelines of the Mass Mailing Tutorial),

Dear %ABtoNICKNAME

However, when I send an e-mail to a test group using this salutation,
only "Dear" appears in the recipient's e-mail salutation and not,
"Dear John, Jane, and Charlie" What am I
doing wrong?

These POP accounts seem fine. As I get a completely
bizarre time lag sometimes doing things in IMAP, I left
this particular problem alone for a couple of days, in
case it just needed some 'catch up' time.

That didn't help. I'm really totally stumped.

What's different between the first one that works and all the others
that fail, in settings and in the templates themselves?

Is it something simple, like the tick being removed from "use a
specific template for replies [or new messages]" in the AB entry?
Or having more than one AB entry for the same contact but only setting
up the template in one of them? Or the SHIFT key being down when
pressing F4?

You mean if you create messages from your POP account the AB templates
work but if you create messages to the same contacts from your IMAP
account the templates don't work? That sounds weird.

> What's going on? How do I fix it?

For a totally blank email to be created it looks like it
is defaulting to a totally empty template set up *somewhere*... Check
all address book entries for the address you are trying to set up
templates for.

For IMAP accounts behaving differently, dunno as I only use POP.

This should prevent TB! from seeing the following as a macro. If it

A Folder template will be used if that folder has focus when the new
message is created, unless you also have an AB template for the
(first?) recipient on the To: line (or an AB group template for a
group that recipient is assigned to.) Unless you are careful about
checking which folder is active when you create a new message this can
result in an unintended template being used. Obviously, you can just
look at the message you are creating to verify the right details are
there.

Address book templates are used when you set the recipient before
entering text in the body.
Individual address book templates take precedence over address book
group templates and both take precedence over folder templates.

Suppose you filter tbudl messages to a dedicated folder. If you want
to use a special template for replies to the list then you can do that
via a folder reply template or via an address book reply template.
Suppose you want to send a private reply to one of the list messages
(Ctrl-F4). When you're using folder templates your message will
be formatted like your list messages, with address book templates that
won't be so.

CS> I note that the "To" field automaticaly fills with TBUDL
CS> for a new message. Sending this message to see if it works.

That's odd. The mentioning of the tag means your addressing an
address book group and if that's done automatically then you're
probably using a self addressing folder template. Those are a bit
risky.

Using folder properties in filters and templates

2009-07-05 Thread Alexander E. Gutman
Hello, friends.

I have got lots of folders and reorganize them often.

Whenever a new penpal (P) occurs, I usually create
a folder (PF) for storing the related communication.
Since I want the incoming/outgoing messages be stored
in PF automatically, I usually create the corresponding
pair of filters which move incoming/outgoing messages
to PF according to Sender/Recipient.

What I am dreaming of is automating the filtering
and making it as easy as entering P's address (or two)
somewhere in PF's properties (e.g., in PF's memo).

If folder memos were searchable via macros, I could
create a single pair of filters with condition like
"Some folder's memo contains '%Sender/%Recipient'"
and action like "Move to the folder
%FirstFolderWhoseMemoContains='%Sender/%Recipient'"
or something similar.

I do understand that the above is realizable via AB
with some clever macros/regexps but I cannot use fixed
folder paths in AB, since my folders are permanently
reorganized.

In addition, I would like to use PF's properties
(rather than AB) for specifying additional info on P
(such as greetings, etc.) for using in message templates,
but I am not aware of macros which can help me.
Currently I enter P's info in PF's templates,
but this leads to unpleasant duplicating the info
needed for "New Message" and "Reply" templates.
Again, I could store the corresponding info in PF's memo,
but it is useless without a %FolderMemo macro.

Any ideas?

My personal preference is address book templates, that's how I
configured my mailing lists. I placed my mailing lists in AB groups
and configured AB group templates, that way it's easy to use the same
template for 'related' lists.

Bingo! Somewhere along the way whilst trying to get this to work I had tried
doing it via an address book template - which I couldn't get to work - and then
promptly forgot about it. Once I deleted the address book template, the common
folder one worked.

Which is the recommended/best way to set these up for things like mailing
lists? Is it better to use a folder template or an address book template or
does it make no difference as long as you only use one?

P.S How can I make my sig darker/more readable? I can't find anywhere within
template set ups to change the font size/colour.

Common folder templates

2009-07-03 Thread Carren Stuart

Two options:
1 Sort all messages not via a list to an alternate folder and edit the
  folder template for that folder.
2 Add all mailing list addresses to one address book group and use
address book group templates for the mailing lists and use the

How to modify the inbox template and subfolders templates

2009-07-01 Thread Stephane Bouvard
Hi,

I would like to modify the inbox reply template, but it does not work : when i
get the properties of this folder i do not have any option for templates...
for other folders i have no problem...

I explain the case in detail : i have an account for mailing lists, i receive
and send messages with the address m...@frn.be , for every mailing list i've
subscribed i have a sorting rule and a specific folder.

But sometimes, i receive messages directly in my inbox (like a private
reply,... messages addressed directly to me and not via a list). I would
prefer for those messages to reply with a different email address, and thus i
would like to modify the default template...

I know that i could modify the default template then modify individualy every
ML folder template, but not very practical with 30+ ML...

On the same subject : is it possible to inherit a template from a parent folder
?

Example : i have a folder Ritlabs containing two subfolders tbudl and tbbeta,
is it possible to modify the folder template at the "Ritlabs" level and apply
automaticaly this modification to the two children folders ?

Exporting templates

2009-06-16 Thread Tom

Hello Everyone,

I love using my templates and do miss them when I work on a different pc
without TB. Is there any way to export them in csv/txt or some other
format that a text reader can understand.
I am not concerned that the macro function will not be available but
even using a cut/paste procedure from a usb stick would be preferable
to creating all those templates from scratch or from memory.
I could go through the most useful ones manually and copy them to a
file but I am hoping that there is some inbuilt export function just
for templates that has eluded me so far.

Yes it does make a difference. It creates a blank line because of the
line break after the '"...flickr.com"\n' <-- there's a \n

I understand that you have to put these value assignments at the

I start from the top down. That is, I first set up the templates for my
accounts (I only use three accounts, and one of those is for archiving old
messages so it's never used for sending or receiving, hence does not need any
templates). Then, if I want the same template in both accounts, I set it up as
a Common Template and in its Options pane, check off both accounts under "Use
In." This lets me omit that template from both the accounts. The next level
down is at the "Group" stage. I have several groups of users that get
specialized templates, stored under the "Group." Finally, there are individual
templates at the Address Book level, and apply only to the specific user.

When a template is to be used, the program looks first at the Address Book
level for one specific to the recipient. If there's not one, it looks at the
groups to which that recipient belongs. If there's still not one, it looks in
the Common Templates if the account is checked, and finally at the Account
properties. The first time it finda a template, it's the one used. The only
ones that have to be there are those in the Account properties. All the rest
are optional, letting you select special treatment for individual users, for
user groups, or everyone. In my case, most of the template properties provided
are left blank. Only a few Address Book templates are used, a couple of groups
get special treatment, and most of my Quick Templates are specific to one
account or the other although in all of them I have "Use In" checked for both
because I created most of them before learning about the Common Templates. I
don't use the QTINCLUDE macro a lot, but it's nice to have available.

I hope this helps a bit; I agree that the documentation leaves much to be
desired, mostly because so much of what does exist is obsolete and no longer
valid. There is a conventional online forum, but my experience has been that
the mailing lists are so much more helpful that I've not logged into that forum
for many weeks now and when I do, I don't find much of interest. One of the
reasons for lack of documentation is the lack of a common language; the user
base here is the most internationalized of all the programs I use. I understand
that if I were able to read Russian I could find more information on line
(since that's the native language of the developers). This is a problem for
many other programs as well; that's why the mailing lists continue to be the
most reliable data sources.

Common templates section in QT editor is available allways for viewing and
editing, even You are logged to program as administrator or user.

When You log into program via account with "user" rights, You will see
specific QTs and Common templates, but if there are some shared templates
from other accounts, You can use them from main toolbar, where is a small
arrow for displaying and using them. So they can be used, but not edited.

as in previous answer, You can add a flag to a quick template about its
purpose, so if You check "New messages and Mass Mailing", You will see it
in New message dropdown and in Address Book for sending Mass mailing, if
You check "Reply messages", You will see it in Reply button dropdown.

Many, many confusing options for templates with no explanations

2009-04-18 Thread AC
I have huge problems with templates because there are many confusing options
and difficult to find
documentation. So, I'm just going to list my several questions on templates
that have been bugging
me:

There's a "Common Templates" section in the quick templates dialog. But every
template also has a
checkbox for "share with other accounts". This is confusing. What's the
difference? How does each
work?

In the same dialog, for each template, there are check boxes for "Use For" "New
Messages", "Reply
Messages", and "Forward messages". However, in each of your Account properties,
you have to set up
templates for all these categories anyway. Again, what's the difference, and
how is each one meant
to be used? Furthermore, why do i even have to check those options?! Whenever I
want to use a quick
template inside another template, I can always do so with the QINCLUDE
function, right? I don't have
to check those boxes at all. Very, very confusing.

Is there somewhere that lists all the template functions in some kind of
organized fashion? I'm
talking all the functions and how to use them? For example, the ISSIGNATURE
command makes no sense
to me whatsoever.

Thanks for all the advice. I love the Bat, but there seriously needs to be a
more convenient place
to find answers to these questions besides mailing lists newsgroups. A good
help file would be
ideal. but I understand if that's not the developer's priority. At least a
normal web forum or
something. Newsgroups and mailing lists are old-school. I still haven't set up
my newsreader to be
able to reply to messages...all I can do is create a new message right now. OK,
I'm done!

You're right, there's a bug in the help file (probably more)
The %To= macro adds addresses to the To: header, it doesn't change the
To: header into the given value.
As the %To= macro has always behaved like this, before and after the

I can confirm that I also get a "To:" line containing both the
recipient from the address book entry I selected to create the new
message and the recipient inserted by the "%TO" macro in the folder
template (when there is no AB template defined for the AB entry).

This is not the behaviour suggested by the help file entry for the %To
macro:-

Help File> TO="address(es)" Changes the TO header to the value given
Help File> by the parameter. If left empty it will remove all
Help File> addresses already in the header.

If left empty the %to macro does what the help file says - it clears
the To header

Well, there is. Believe me, TB! knows which folder is active when you
create a new message.

Besides, otherwise Folder templates wouldn't work at all.

But this is a matter for TBUDL rather than TBBETA, as it is not a beta
issue. XP and f'up to TBUDL.

An easier way would be:

- copy the e-mail address of the recipient => [EMAIL PROTECTED]
- open a new message
- paste address in to: field

=> Automatic Completion will be triggered and in a list-box with all
the corresponding AB entries will appear.

Cheers!

The most common reason for address book templates that aren't used
are duplicate address book entries for the same address.
That doesn't mean that both entries need to have that address set as
primary address.

Another reason that AB templates aren't triggered can be corruption of
your address book.
Create a backup with TB of your AB and restore that on top of your old
one.

AB templates won't be used when you edit the message body before you
set the recipient.

AB will only be used when they are set for the first address og the to

How did you perform your repeated searches?

Did you try the following:

Open the AB.
Click on Personal AB.
File - Export To - Address List (Plain Text)
Open that file with an editor.
Find (name of the person in question)?

Still no duplicate entries?
