archiving

2002-08-19 Thread Razgo

Hi tbudl,
I am new to the bat! and to this email list. hopefully I am emailing
the right place.

I was wondering about different ways of archiving email but still
being able to search access the email itself.

I came from Eudora and used to keep around 120 thousand emails, but
trimed it all back to around 7 thousand before importing it over to
the bat!

I used to just copy Eudora email to another location to simply start
up the second copy to search older email. and keep a zipped up copy as
well.

I have not tried this with the bat! as yet.

So all suggestions on the way you guys handle backup copies of your
email is appreciated.
thanks.

JN Razgo,

JN I think you've heard most of the better ideas, including Allie's
JN interesting method of using a scheduled archive operation. I thought
JN I'd add my method into the mix because it overlaps in part some
JN previous ideas and in part is different.

thanks for taking the time to respond.

JN For several reasons, I don't like to keep more mail in the program
JN than I need to, so I try to keep the message base in TB! pretty small.

yes I would normally do this also to keep system resources as free as
possible. however I discovered the bat! uses much less than my Eudora
programme did. currently the bat! is using 5% and Eudora is using 13%,
and thats a huge difference.

JN So periodically I append the messages in some of my TB! folders into
JN Mailbag Assistant's native archive format. You could develop a script
JN to do that automatically, but I don't know how and don't have the need
JN to learn. The TB! message base can be saved in Mailbag Archive's
JN native format or as Unix file formatted files or as (I think) text
JN files. The advantages to using this program include compression and
JN sophisticated search, print, and database operations (and you can
JN reply from within the program via MAPI).

ok this sounds good.

JN However, I also archive certain email on the fly. For those messages,
JN I have filters set up which automatically append the message onto a
JN Unix-formatted file.

yes, this is something I will have to learn how to do and put into
practise.

JN I can't say that my practices are any better than the other
JN suggestions you've received, they're just what I've worked out for my
JN purposes, which are to keep certain types of messages both archived
JN and accessible, and to have a program or format which can be used
JN seamlessly with different email programs.

thanks for the tips. I have many options now to consider.
thank you all.

LT Hi Razgo -

LT Did you find it difficult to set up and use?

hi Lynn, like all new software it was a little daunting at first. the
immediate setting up of accounts was quick, and i went straight for
the filters. they didn't appear to work at first, (i was using the
demo at the time), and i'm not sure what went wrong, but after looking
at it a bit more on how it works they all started working.

for me, as soon as I saw I could have seperate inbox/outbox etc for
each account i set up, i went and purchased it. that alone sold me :)
and was one of my gripes with other email clients that didn't have
this capability.

I have only been using it now for a few weeks and am still learning
all the features.

In fact I told a friend of mine about the bat! as he is an email
fanatic like myself. I am just waiting for him to abuse me now as he
will probably go and purchase it also :)

Marck No. But then checking a file once every 10 seconds is not a

Marck Yes.

R i don't understand the purpose of it.

Marck I hope that helps clear it up a bit for you.

yes it is much clearer now, thanks. however it's not about how much

R yes it is much clearer now, thanks. however it's not about how

Marck ... maybe, but it does no harm, takes no CPU and doesn't affect you
Marck in any other way than in the back of your mind :-).

it may do no harm but yes it does use cpu and it does start up every
ten sec's. how much cpu and what it does is not the issue. the issue
is as i have already stated. that is the bat! is performing a useless
function every ten sec's, yet i have no control over it? that in my
eyes is an issue regardless of it being harmless or not.

R to me it just doesn't feel right that i can't make the bat! sit
R there idle and only do things when i want it to do it.

Marck ... for that kind of usage, there's no need to have it taking up
Marck valuable RAM. Just load it when you need it :-/.

that's not a solution to the problem, but thanks anyway.

R i know this is probably a whole new topic, but where/how can i go
R about putting in a request/wish?

Marck This kind of issue is handled in the beta testing area.

Marck You can subscribe to the discussion list here:
Marck [EMAIL PROTECTED]

thank you i will do that.

R for this function to be an option rather than a needed function
R that i am clearly not using, yet i have no choice in it checking

Marck Like I say, I think you're making too much of it. It's no overhead
Marck and does no harm. But if you want to post a wish on the
Marck Wishlist/Bugtraq, now's probably as good a time as any, with V2
Marck about to go into beta testing.

i'm making too much of it? for who? as a paying customer i think it's
ok for me to find out why my email programme is continually looking
for something that doesn't exist. i think i am being totally fair in
my requests here. it was a fair question which i think many would have
wanted to know the answer to this and why it continues.

thank you for your help.

yes that's basically it. it never seems to filter all email in my
