I think the boss is always right in the same way the customer is always
right! Often times, both are wrong, but often times to keep them happy...we
do not point out how wrong they are. I think it is really a case of picking

The customer is not always right. Someone along the line, some sales manager
decided that they were in order to make some money. When I was a sales
manager, I stressed the opposite, but I added that there are ways to correct
them without telling them they are wrong. We lost a few sales to customers
who were adamant and refused to listen to us, but we gained far more from
customers that were thankful for steering them in the right direction.

Personally, I think technical writing is easy but I wouldn't even
consider tackling any type of creative writing. Maybe I'm not as good

I think it goes to interest. If you had something you were motivated
to write, I have no doubt that you'd do just fine. You already
possess many of the fundamental mechanics that take the longest to

'creative writing' has the benefit of being an understandable term.
The thing is, it is so broad as to be almost useless. We use
creativity regardless of what kind of writing we do.

For me, I say I am a tech writer by day and creative writer by night.
The idea is that one is my career and the other is my passion. In
that sense, the term has a certain utility.

As for the path one walks to becoming a creative writer, it is
different for everybody. I know writers who have taken the classes
and then blossomed and gone on to fame and fortune. For me, voracious
reading, rubbing shoulders with peers, and regular writing has been
the ticket.

From my reading, it seems clear that many successful creative writers
wrestle with writers block, some more than others, and some more
severe than others. The difference that I have observed is that all
successful creative writers develop mechanisms to deal with writers
block, in some cases to the point where the adjustment becomes second
nature.

Orson Scott Card has probably the most famous example from the sci-fi
side of things. He says that when he runs into writer's block, he
views it as a sign that he's going down the wrong path, and he treats
it as a tool, a mechanism that alerts him when he has somehow gone
off-track. Instead of beating his head against the metaphorical wall,
he backs up until he's on the right path and proceeds forward from
there.

Technical writing was around longer, but I don't think the job title

early technical writers deemed typists? In my first writing/editing job
in 1990, I was called an editorial assistant. My job function was as a
junior technical editor, but with a fraction of the pay.

When I was in college back in the 80s, most people had no clue what a
technical writer was, and they couldn't understand why they were needed.
Apparently manuals and text books were created by magic in most of their
minds. [poof!]

Just a personal observation -- technical and creative writing call upon the
same craftsmanship (use of language, planning, outlining, adjusting when the
project runs away with itself). TW is great practice for a CW because it
instills the discipline to _write_ and not fuss around with self-indulgent
sillinesses such as writer's block (from which no successful creative writer
suffers). The hardest (and most required) part of creative writing -- and
the most creative -- is figuring out when I'm able to steal that disciplined
hour to move the story along another page or two.

Just MHO. YMMV.

Interesting article. My cousin Christine just had her first novel published
(after winning a few contests) and she is a technical writer in Utah. I
just finished the novel and could see the discipline, as well as some of

stood out in where she decided to begin and end chapters.

She has inspired me, although I never seem to get past the carrying around a

He's not the only one. I know of two TWs who write
literature on the side. One has self-published three
books, and the other has been published in several
short story journals.

Good he doesn't assign readings from Microsoft manuals... Those are
hard finds, and I can only imagine the school bookstore markup on
those puppies! ;-)

Personally, I think technical writing is easy but I wouldn't even
consider tackling any type of creative writing. Maybe I'm not as good
at observing life as I am observing a piece of software :)

what do you mean, Dana? They're not the same? Wow. My reality is shattered.

Re: [TCP] Technical writers may shape future of American lit

2007-06-06 Thread Rhonda Bracey
That 50 years comment jarred with me too and the article and author
lost credibility at that point.

Interestingly, I'm currently reading The short life and long times of
Mrs Beeton where it's obvious that technical writing was in existence
for much longer than 50 years. According to this book, Mrs Beeton
plagiarised enormously from earlier household management and cookery
books. Considering her tome was first published in the 1860s, and that
her husband's publishing house dealt with many 'how to' books and
pamphlets, it's obvious that tech writing in one form or another has
been around for a long time.
