Google tells me that Loews is a Canadian hotel chain. And I already have a camp

Bill posted the direct link, but as always, this information and so much more
(PDFs of out-of-print issues! Downloadable cave maps!) can be found on the
AMCS website. To order, basically PayPal us the money and send your address and
we will get it right out. There are other options, like sending a check by mail

Cavers,

I was talking to Dave Jackson at the NSS Convention a couple of weeks ago, and
he was wondering if we wanted CaveSim at TCR again this year. He would love to
come again, but I think we had to raise about $1500 last year to cover his
expenses. TCR Honcho Don Arburn said it was very popular, but he doesn't have
time this year to raise the money. Is anyone out there in caverland willing to
take on this responsibility? It's a great addition to TCR.

Re: [Texascavers] Best padlocks for cave gates

2016-04-04 Thread Jim Kennedy via Texascavers
Travis,

Having been involved with dozens (maybe hundreds) of cave gates around the
country, I recommend brass Best locks. And stay away from any rubberized locks,
they aren't any better and usually cost more. Lubricate with powdered graphite
only, no oil or WD40 or such. And change out the locks periodically, especially
in wet, muddy, or dusty situations.

Despite what what Mixon espouses, cave resources are definitely worth
protecting, and arguably more valuable than my house and possessions. Those can
be replaced. That's why the old NSS "Cave Gating" book and it's "weak link"
philosophy of gating are obsolete. For a more up-to-date approach, check out
the cave gate chapter in NSS' "Cave Conservation and Restoration" book. All
this, of course, assumes a well-designed and constructed gate. A poor gate can
have entirely the opposite effect, and cause more problems than it solves.

All it takes is one jerk to ruin things forever. The Butterfly at Caverns of
Sonora is a prime example.

[Texascavers] Rolling Oaks Cave Preserve workday

2016-03-22 Thread Jim Kennedy via Texascavers
Posted for Ellie Falgout:

We're having another volunteer work day at Rolling Oaks Cave Preserve in Bexar
County (northwest San Antonio) on Saturday, May 28th at 10am. The main
purposes are to clean up the grounds (trash and branches) and to continue the
dig at Niche Cave, which is full of old farm trash and sediment that is washing
in. We need people, buckets, & shovels. Bring your own drinks and snacks for
the work. TCMA will provide bottled water, bananas and light lunch. The cave
preserve is located at 224 Laurel Ridge Lane, San Antonio, TX 78253. All
visitors to the Preserve will be asked to sign a liability waiver. Meet at
10:00 am. Bring your own cave gear if you wish to enter any of the four
Preserve caves after the dig.

I can be reached at 509-899-0007 or ellie.tho...@gmail.com in case any one gets
lost, or if you would like coordinate more details. No need to RSVP if you are
attending, just show up! Trip will be canceled in the event of rain.

The 2016 TSA Spring Convention website is now live, and you can register now
for price cheaper than the past two years. If you procrastinate and register on
site, it will be substantially more. Go to http://convention.cavetexas.org/
now, don't delay!
Webmaster Quast and Treasurer Peña deserve tons of credit for pulling this all
together.

They are premature. We do not yet have confirmation on the dates or the site

[Texascavers] Party next Saturday

2015-10-30 Thread Jim Kennedy via Texascavers
Sure, we all know by now that the Austin caver Hallowen party is at Drew
Thompson's house tomorrow evening. But don't forget that the all-cavers-invited
Batty Baby Shower is at our house the following Saturday, starting around 2 in
the afternoon. Potluck. We'll likely have a keg, but other contributions
welcome. Pray for good weather, although we'll put up a big white canopy just
in case. Call if you need directions or more info. And no, we won't know the
baby's sex until it arrives in mid-January.

Actually, after a 12 1/2 hour day, we didn't totally finish. We are heading
back next Sunday for a few hours to complete the job. Great crew today.
Everybody busted ass. But we had some delays from weather and some equipment
issues, so we didn't make our deadline.

Re: [Texascavers] Bat Cave, Florida

2015-02-12 Thread Jim Kennedy via Texascavers
I have been to Alachua Bat Cave, and was also appalled by the disastrous
management actions that Sleaze so eloquently described. In fact, I use this
site in my lectures as an example of what not to do. But Mixon is a little
mistaken, as the cave is now owned by a junior college, not the government.
And it's their lawyers that made it so. But we can't point the finger at
non-cavers mismanaging caves when our own nearby NSS-owned Warrens Cave has one
of the most atrocious gates that I have ever seen.

My name is Mark Childre and some may know me. I’m planning a field trip with
three teenage high school students from Laredo. We plan to visit Deep Cave
 over Spring Break.

Our plans are to enter the cave on March 8. Right now, I'm the only caver in
the bunch. Two of the three have been in Robber Baron and did quite well. I
was hoping that someone might volunteer to help. If I get hurt in the cave
for some reason, I would need someone who could get us out --- and, hey,
 there's the helectite room -ou!!!

 I have three:

 Nathan Thorp 16 yrs old
 Jose Cardenas 17 yrs old
 Terry Roach 17 yrs old
I'll have all the paperwork giving permission and the medical releases,
similar to what I had when we visited Robber Baron.

I've advertised on bexargro...@googlegroups.com but haven't had any
 response yet.

We really do have one of the finest caving magazines in the United States,
but I would like to try to make you aware of something that needs to be put
back on the Contents Page to make it complete, and to correct an error that
is being perpetuated. In the past this information has been either there or
on the combined Publication Data/Contents Page. There is plenty of room to
add a text box above the word Contents with this information, or if it
belongs on the Publication Data page, put it there. I would suggest checking
with Logan McNatt as to correct placement.

 The Texas Caver
 January - March, 2015
 Volume 61, Issue 1

I put this in the format that would be for the first issue of 2015. In many
past issues, also, rather than Vol and Issue being put on the cover, it was
 simply the months involved.

Correction that needs to be fixed: The Volume number is for a whole year!
DO NOT increase this number with the isssue number increasement! Please see
the wonderful spread sheet provided by Jerry Atkinson in his 11/13/14 post
about the Texas Caver Publication List. If you have never worked on a
magazine before, and have never paid attention to this, then this mistake can
be understandable. But if we are still sending out issues to libraries and
other important cave owner entities, this information matters. For all who
may still get their hard copies bound into yearly volumes, this also matters.
In 2014, the TC went from Vol 60 all the way to Vol 63, yet the whole year
 is Volume 60.

To many who see this post, this request will seem frivolous and totally
unimportant. But as someone who worked on the TC for untold years alongside
James Jasek to edit, type, proofread, correct, print, collate, address and
mail for any number of editors, besides working in a bookbinding company,
this information really matters. Design is completely individual as to the
editor of any magazine, but critical publication data is not, and is one of
those things - like proper page numbers for the articles within - that should
be carried forward from issue to issue for proper continuity.

Sincerely, and with the best of nerdy, proofreading intentions,

 Mimi Jasek

 Infernal Machine
 Ascender built by Dwight Deal

 http://storrick.cnc.net/VerticalDevicesPage/Ascender/LeverCamPages/T1LeverCam235.html

The Infernal Machine is an important piece in the history of climbing cams
that ultimately led to the Gibbs Ascender. The first significant step was
when Robert Henshaw and David Morehouse developed the first widely-publicized
type-a lever cam ascender in 1965 (the Iowa Cams), and simultaneously
introduce a very awkward ropewalker system. Dwight Deal soon modified the
design, but used his Infernal Machine in a more traditional Jumar-type
climbing system. The Infernal Machine that Dwight gave me differs from his
published design (Baltimore Grotto News, VIII, 7, pp 168-173, reprinted in
the 1965 Speleo Digest) by having only two choices for the cam pivot, not
three. His initial design had a hole closer to the cam face (which would give
it a very large cam angle), but Dwight found that the ascender would slip
down the main line when using that hole. On the other hand, using the distant
hole (with its very small cam angle) provided so much gripping force that the
Infernal Machine would jam. Dwight's 1965 experiments (on 9 mm. nylon) showed
that the hole locations were quite critical: moving them as little as 1.5 mm.
parallel to the cam face would change the performance noticeably. This would
change the cam angle, and with a smooth cam, the cam angle is critical.

Incidentally, SANDY R stamped on this ascender is Sandy Renstrom, later
 Dwight's wife.

I recall making some cams just after Dwight made some based, I think on a PA

These cams ultimately became the Gibbs design. Is there a caver museum for

Charlie,

OTR is where it has always been, in West Virginia. However TCR, the Texas
Cavers Reunion, is this weekend, Thursday through Sunday. There have been
numerous announcements on CaveTex and Facebook to let you know that this year
it is at the Guadalupe River RV Park and Campground in Spring Branch on Highway
281. And the food is excellent.

 Border militia confronts bat researchers

 Posted: Tuesday, September 2, 2014 7:26 am
 By Jonathan Clark
 Nogales International

A group of heavily armed militiamen confronted a team of scientists who had
been studying bats in a cave near Sonoita last week, apparently mistaking
them for illegal border-crossers or drug-smugglers.

No one was hurt during the late-night encounter in the Gardner Canyon area,
but the incident highlights the potential for trouble when citizens take up
arms in hopes of defending the U.S.-Mexico border.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection “does not endorse or support any private
group or organization to take border security matters into their own hands
as it could have disastrous personal and public safety consequences” the
 agency said in a statement.

The confrontation near Sonoita began at approximately 11 p.m. on Aug. 23,
according to a report given by one of the scientists to a Santa Cruz County
Sheriff’s deputy. The team of three researchers had been counting bats in
Onyx Cave, and as they began walking back to their campsite near Gardner
Canyon Road, they were flashed with a spotlight by a group of men.

The men reportedly began shouting at the scientists in Spanish, and
identified themselves as a militia group protecting the U.S.-Mexico border.
The scientists identified themselves and continued to walk to their campsite
“while seeking cover,” according to the deputy’s report.

When they arrived at their campsite, they were again approached by the
militiamen, who pulled up on an ATV while carrying a shotgun and wearing
camouflage clothing. This time the militiamen were apologetic, but the
reporting scientist told the deputy he still cursed them out and let them
know how they had made him and his colleagues feel.

The researchers said they weren’t directly threatened by the militiamen and
did not see any weapons pointed at them. Still, the reporting person
described the encounter as “aggressive” and said he was concerned for the
safety of other people who were camping in the area. He said he saw three
militia members, but suspected there were more.

The report was made the afternoon after the encounter, and the deputy took
no additional action on the matter. “Border Patrol had already dealt with
the situation,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Raoul Rodriguez.

Border Patrol agents from the Sonoita Station had arrived at the scientists’
campsite during the incident after having been contacted by the militia
group. An agent contacted later by the investigating deputy reportedly
described the militiamen as “heavily armed,” even more so than the agent.

Neither the Border Patrol nor Sheriff’s Office could provide details about
the militiamen, other than that they claimed to be from Colorado.

In a brief statement from the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector, the agency said
it received a phone call from a member of a militia group reporting
suspicious activity near Sonoita at about 10 p.m. on Aug. 23.

“Sonoita station agents responded and encountered a small group of
 biologists studying bats,” it said.

The whole idea of making highways compatible with wildlife is pretty new. The
Europeans and Canadians are way ahead of in those areas. I have seen a couple
of presentations indicating really high success rates when done right. Of
course, there is a monetary cost to protecting wildlife. Doing good doesn't
come cheaply.

Re: [Texascavers] GPS recommendation?

2014-07-26 Thread Jim Kennedy via Texascavers
A sexton is an officer of a church, congregation, or synagogue charged with the
maintenance of its buildings and/or the surrounding graveyard. In smaller
places of worship, this office is often combined with that of verger. In larger
buildings, such as cathedrals, a team of sextons may be employed.

A sextant is an instrument used to measure the angle between any two visible
objects. Its primary use is to determine the angle between a celestial object
and the horizon which is known as the object's altitude.
