Re: [Texascavers] giving away books

An interesting tid-bit, the Texas Caver is banned by the Texas Department
of Criminal Justice, Prison Division...

Too many articles about digging and back in the day we had articles about
the use of explosives for micro-shaving and what not. They frowned on it
and asked us not to send anymore...

[Texascavers] 2018 TCMA Board of Directors Election Results

2017-12-12 Thread Joe Ranzau via Texascavers
Greetings Cavers -

Please join me in congratulating, Linda Palit, Juliana Rincón, Ken
Demarest, Greg Mosier, and Andy Edwards as they are our your new Texas Cave
Management Association Board members! They will begin three year terms
starting January 1st, 2018.

The TCMA exists because of our dedicated volunteers to preserve our cave
and karst resources, to support scientific research and all for mindful
recreation opportunities. Much activity goes on behind the scenes to make
our organization function and we always have opportunities to help.

Many thanks to all who stepped up to run and congratulations to our newest
Board members!

Re: [Texascavers] Write-in candidate for TSA treasurer

2017-10-21 Thread Joe Ranzau via Texascavers
The enthusiasm is great! Jules is also running for the TCMA board and I
plan to vote for her.

Something I've been thinking about for a while. It would be awesome if
folks would pick one Texas caving board to support. They are all working
boards and need as much time as folks can contribute. It's hard to ask
folks to be dedicated to one but we really do benefit from the focus and
dedicated time. I know from experience that I wanted to be involved
everywhere. It takes time to really learn about what's needed and where
you want to contribute.

My unsolicited and likely less than popular opinion.

Re: [Texascavers] [TCR Food]

2017-02-10 Thread Joe Ranzau via Texascavers
Repost of my comments for those among us not on BookFace.

A) Fending for ourselves disrupts the communal nature of the Saturday
evening meal. If we end up going this route it would be important to
continue with Saturday evening activities that encourage everyone to come
together.

B) Catering will drive up the cost and limit the meal options. There really
is a limit to the amount of fajitas or mediocre BBQ we should be forced to
eat.

C) Folks stepping forward. This is a challenge as we can clearly see the
job is pretty thankless. "You didn't cook polecat three ways this year, how
the hell do you expect me to eat?!?" Most of us no longer cook for the
masses either. Watching new folks struggle to tackle the TCMA breakfast
every few years is always a hoot and it's on a much smaller scale.

Alternative option ) Grotto cook-off - Create competition amongst the
grotto's and tie it into the theme. Have the parade start a little later
and everyone can tour the camp dining at the different offerings or it
could all be brought to a central location. This helps share the load and
teach folks to cook on a larger scale before having to tackle the big feed
themselves.

2016-10-05 Thread Joe Ranzau via Texascavers
“It doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full. There is
clearly room for more wine.”

We are having our annual wine tasting on Friday night! We will be down by
the water just up river from the main lodge. We will start around 6:30pm
and go until whenever. Look for the horde of people with wine glasses!

The TCR cooks will host a fundraising dinner near us to help pay for their
new trailer. Plan to grab dinner with them and join us for drinks. Bring
your own plates and utensils.

Peter will set up a giant screen for slides and digital pictures. It was a
great addition last year!

New for this year - a Sparkling Wine table. There will be prizes for best
sparkling wines. Brut, sec and anything in between.

We ask that you bring your favorite or a unique bottle of wine under $20.
Note that we are a pretentious bunch so please skip the yellow tail or
franzia ;-)

Well behaved beer, cider, absinthe, mead, grogg, arak, and pisco drinkers
are welcome to join us!

Re: [Texascavers] Honey Creek Cave Road Repair Project

2016-02-24 Thread Joe Ranzau via Texascavers
Rob and Texas Cavers -

Many thanks to everyone for this effort. I'll make a personal donation of
$100 should it be needed.

Two questions, why isn't a group like the TSA taking care of the total
cost? They have ample funds and this type of thing seems right up their
alley...

The other is how we keep this from happening? Several folks advocated
aborting the last trip to keep this damage from happening but were
overruled. I've personally operated heavy equipment at least twice fixing
the road after similar but less severe incidents. I know Kurt and many
other have as well. I recall something about the definition of insanity
but well, yea...

Any way, my point is why are we passing the hat when this can just be
solved.

El Jefe -

Keeping things consistent has its appeals for the more anal retentive of us
in the group. I support the third weekend of October for the date.

Water is always nice at a site but not a requirement. Some of the folks
from outside San Antonio and Austin might appreciate a site closer to
them. For the love of all that is right with the world don't pick anything
near Dallas. I've yet, in three decades on this planet to find any
redeeming qualities to that place except maybe that it is not Beaumont.

The mud pits around Gonzales were fun, think cavers in the mist looking for
cow pie shrooms. It has also been a while since we had anything out west
like Chalk Bluff though cost had previously been an issue there.

The beauty of the situation is you are in charge, you will never make
everyone happy and unless someone else is willing and able, we go where and
when you decide.

I read that this morning on the plane. Made me giggle. Reporters are
under time crunches and unless they are familiar with a topic take a sound

That said, I am glad to see the Canyon being pulled into the fold and taken

There will once again be an informal wine tasting on Friday night near the

flexible and we may start drinking earlier or later, who are we kidding, It
will be earlier!

To participate please bring a bottle of wine to share with the group.
Shoot for something better than Boone's Farm but less than Stag's Leap
Artemis.

Consider bringing a snack to share too, though it is not required.

Bring a cup if you have one, we will have some loaners.

Re: [Texascavers] Texas Caver

2014-07-31 Thread Joe Ranzau via Texascavers
Ediger gives a nice talk about why the TSA really should or does encompass
all people in Texas that like caves, not just the ones that pony up
membership dues. Perhaps he will post it here for our review...

As a comparison, the mailing list has 481 members. We do have a lot of
out of state members on the mailing list.

On occasion, when the picking were slim for the TC, I had to resort to
the same thing in order to get it published.

 No harm in that.

Not everyone has access to these listserves (is that a word?) and,
since attachments aren’t allowed, I would ping the writers for photos to go
along with their offerings to further flesh out their report.

“Put a little meat on their bones”, in other words.

One’s gotta do what one’s gotta do when the pickings are a little slim.

 A report is a report.

My main query yesterday was not just how the TC was doing, but how is
the TSA doing, as in membership numbers and trends.

Organized clubs are struggling, including many grottos and the NSS. How
 does the TSA look?

For the record - and I'm not mad at anyone; I think this is a good
discussion - the Texas caving news appearing in the latest issue of the NSS
News is in Buford Pruitt's Underground Online column. Buford's method -
as I understand it - is trolling the chatter on various blogs, email lists,
etc. across the nation and compiling the interesting bits in his column.
That is how a Colorado Bend trip report, a Government Canyon trip report,
and a report on the latest Deep Cave trip ended up in the NSS News. They
were not sent to the News as an article to be published but were instead
picked up by Buford off of this very email listserve. That's great. Cavers
across the nation and the world need to see that Texas cavers go caving and
 do interesting things.

I know that occasionally the three people who wrote those reports for
Texascavers.com also compile the happenings in their respective projects in
a bit more of a readable and concise fashion with pictures and maps and
submit an article to the Texas Caver. That's also a great thing. If the
editors of the Texas Caver want to pull things of the email list and
publish it, more power to them. I'll continue to support the magazine and
the TSS and news about caving in Texas wherever it appears.
