1.) Did you receive the check I sent to you on behalf of the TSS ?

2.) Do you have any HCSNA database updates to send me or do you want to do that

The Karst Project at Government Canyon SNA scheduled for May 16 and 17 will
take place on the 16th only. I will be limiting activities to ridgewalking (50’
separation is social distancing in its very nature) and all activity areas will
be accessed by hiking from the project meeting spot or from the Visitor Center
(no need to ride in anyone else’s car). I will also be limiting participation
to 15 people. Please let me know as soon as you can if you want to participate
so that I can arrange teams and objectives. I will be giving priority to people
that have participated in the project in the past.

We will be following park rules while hiking on trails. There is no camping

[Texascavers] Government Canyon Karst Project Report

2015-12-25 Thread Marvin and Lisa via Texascavers
November/December Government Canyon Karst Project Report

November 7, 2015

Participants: Niki Lake, Marvin Miller, Joe Schaertl

Only Joe and Niki joined the project for what threatened to be a rainy day.
The ground was very wet from rains in the preceding days so the trails were
closed. I asked Niki, who is the Resource Specialist at Government Canyon
SNA, about the new pit that had been found on the Gallagher tract, on the
west side of Hwy 211. It had actually been found several years previous by a
bird survey team but the property did not fully transfer from the City of
San Antonio to Texas Parks until recently.

The pit was named Loca Guera Pit by the team that discovered it. Niki had
only a location marked on a small topo on a poor scan of a Zara
Environmental report. Sometime after the pit's discovery Zara did a karst
invertebrate survey over some of the ridgetops on the tract and they had
noted the cave. The report Niki had did not contain the appendix with the
GPS coordinates. Using the poor topo image and Niki's memory we set out
trying to find the pit. We did one sweep up the ridge that it was supposed
to be on without finding it. We regrouped and changed our strategy. In our
trek to the point we were going to start our next sweep we came across a
marked karst feature. The tag was numbered PR-10. This made us happy because
PR-10 was also located on the topo and the topo had a scale bar. We
calculated a heading and a distance to the pit and started walking - and
walked right to it.

Niki had to leave to attend to other duties so Joe and I rigged the pit, a
7.6 m drop, and surveyed it. Sadly, there was no ongoing passage at the
bottom. The entrance is roughly diamond-shaped and about 2.5 meters across.
>From the pit bottom the floor descended a slight scree slope and then went
flat to the back wall. We surveyed a total length of 15.72 m and 8.61 m
deep. When Joe touched down after rappelling first he noticed a
diamond-backed rattlesnake on the floor. The floor was wide enough that we
could skirt around it. It never made any indication that it was disturbed by
us. The cave floor has had significant infilling. Large stalagmites along
the back wall penetrate the floor. There are also two sets of initials
inscribed on the back wall. The lower initials look more weathered than the
top, dated set, and, surprisingly, are located only about .3 m above the
floor level. Is it possible that sometime before 1957 (the date with the
upper set) the floor level was quite a bit lower? Discussions with George
Veni suggest that significant surface erosion of top soils has occured since
the beginning of ranch activities in the late 1800's/early 1900's.

After surveying the cave we headed back to PR-10 and dug on it for a couple
of hours. At first it looked very promising but by the time we finished we
were digging down the floor of the sink, hoping to find an open space. The
soil and rocks are still loose and the dig should be continued.

December 5 & 6, 2015

Participants: Jorge Carcamo, Lauren DeLeon, Mike Gibbons, Sarah Gorton, Niki
Lake, Marvin Miller, Shauna Mohler, Mary Moore, James Morrow, Donnie Roland,
Victoria Sommers, Aarron Wertheim

Saturday Activities

Donnie Roland was in attendance on Saturday morning and was keen to go
looking for a cave that he knew lay close to Horseshoe Canyon Cave. Both
caves were found by Donnie in 1995. Horseshoe Canyon Cave is in one of the
private property inholdings on the northeast side of the SNA, but from
Donnie's description the new cave might be located on SNA property. Donnie
was also interested in finding a spring cave in the same area, but probably
on SNA property, that he had seen in the same 1995 timeframe. He had led
teams to look for this cave twice before, without success. With the recent
transfer of properties to the SNA there were more places that were open for
searching. Other attendees Saturday morning were Jorge, Lauren, Niki,
Victoria, Aarron, and I. We made one large team and went looking for the
caves.

Donnie said the cave close to Horseshoe Canyon Cave was called 9 Meter Cave.
I had coordinates from the TSS database for Horseshoe Canyon Cave so we set
out to go there first and, from there, find Donnie's cave. On our traverse
to the coordinates we came across a cave and Donnie pronounced that it was
the sought-after 9 Meter Cave. The cave has a low sloping entrance in a
sinkhole but then opens immediately to a 1.3-m-tall dome with a sky light.
Another dome follows that one to the end of the cave. On a flowstone shelf
at the end of the cave a too-small tube continues onward. The cave taped out
at 5.90 meters, so the 9 Meter name was a hopeful guess. After inputting the
coordinates of the cave into the TSS GIS database, WallsMap, I saw that the
location is within the inholding, and thus is not a Government Canyon cave.
However, this property may be transferred to the SNA in the future.

After this we decided to continue to

[Texascavers] Government Canyon Karst Project

2014-09-08 Thread Marvin Miller via Texascavers
The Government Canyon Karst Project will be starting up again on the first
weekend of October, the 4th and 5th. We have thousands of acres to
ridgewalk, lots of promising sinks to dig on, and caves to survey.
Government Canyon State Natural Area is located on the northwest side of
San Antonio. Camping is available in the volunteer campground. Contact me
for arrangements. We will meet on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9:00 at
the Volunteer/Research Station. After entering at the main gate, take the
first right, go through the closed gate (shutting it behind you again), and
proceed 1 mile to the VRS. The parking lot is on the left.

The November Government Canyon Karst Project will not be held on the first
weekend of the month as is usual. Instead the project date will be Sunday,
Nov. 10. This will be a Sunday only project. Camping is available for
Saturday and Sunday night. Contact me to arrange that, or with any other
project-related questions.

We meet at 9:00 at the Volunteer/Research Station. After entering the park
at the main gate, take the first right. Go through the closed gate (make
sure to close it again behind you) and proceed approximately 1 mile to the
VRS. We usually meet in the parking lot to the right.

The next trip will take place on the 2nd weekend of May - the 11th and 12th.
That will be the last trip before the summer break.

[Texascavers] Government Canyon Karst Project date changes

2012-03-10 Thread Marvin and Lisa
There have been some changes in the Government Canyon Karst Project dates
for the months of April and May.

The April project will take place on the 7th, Saturday only. There will be
no project activities on the 8th, Easter Sunday.

The May project has been rescheduled from the first weekend of the month to
the last, May 26th and 27th. The TSA website calendar has been updated.

I'll take the opportunity to plug the April project date. During the last
project weekend on March 3rd and 4th we made some progress on a promising
in-cave dig lead and started on a couple of promising surface digs as well.
There is some very fertile ground to ridgewalk and some exciting leads to
push in caves so come and join in the fun!

Contact me for details.

Correctomundo, Julia!

Just like the Gov't Canyon Project, there will be NO project weekend at
Longhorn, as everyone has way too many committments in January.

The first Longhorn project weekend will be in February.

Hope to see you there or at Gov't Canyon.

Have a safe and responsible New Years Eve (in other words, don't drive drunk)
and a great 2012!

[Texascavers] Government Canyon Karst Project

2011-11-16 Thread Marvin and Lisa
The next Government Canyon project date is December 3rd and 4th. There are
lots of things to work on. The deepest cave in the park has several blowing
leads at the bottom. They need just a little work or a real skinny person.
Also lots of ridgewalking and surface sinks to check. Directions are below.
Camping is available but contact me to set it up.

We meet at 9:00 both mornings in the parking lot of the Volunteer/Research
Station.

Directions to the Government Canyon Karst Project:

Find the intersection of U.S. 16 and Loop 1604 in northwest Bexar County
(clearly shown on any state highway map). Drive 2 miles north on U.S. 16 to
the third traffic light and turn left onto FM 1560 (there is a Shell station
on the corner). Follow 1560 for 3 miles till you see the sign for GCSNA.
Follow the arrow to the right and drive 2 more miles to the sharp left turn
in the road. The gate to GCSNA is straight ahead. Enter at the gate and then
take the first right. There is an unlocked gate that will need to be opened
and then closed behind you. Continue to the Volunteer/Research Station,
where we will meet.

planned for that evening at the park. The party will include plenty of tasty
eats and drinks and lots of caver fellowship. If you've ever helped out on
the project, put it on your calendar and plan to show up. More details will
emerge as the date approaches.

[Texascavers] Government Canyon Karst Project

2010-09-07 Thread Marvin Lisa
The schedule for the Government Canyon Karst Project for the rest of 2010 is
as follows:

October 2 3

November 6 7

December 4 5

There are many caves still to be found at Government Canyon. There are caves
to survey. Some of them require vertical work and some of them are short and
easy. There are some intriguing in-cave leads and there are hundreds of
surface features to investigate. Some of them will lead into caves. There is
plenty for cavers of any skill level so mark these dates on your calendars
and come help out. Camping is available at the park. Contact me to set that
up.

We will meet at 9:00 each morning in the parking lot of the
Volunteer/Research Station.

[Allcavers] Fwd: [Texascavers] Government Canyon karst project

2010-05-24 Thread Diana Tomchick
For those cavers who are looking for a fun Memorial Day caving
project, I can strongly recommend this one. Marvin is a great guy and
Government Canyon is a wonderful state park. The regular camping spots
for this park are probably all reserved for this weekend, but as a
member of this project you will not have to worry about that, as you
will have a separate primitive camping spot reserved for the project.
The caves are not large, but there are many of them and it's a great
way to learn to survey.

Be sure to take your mountain bike with you if you plan to go, as
there are extensive (and very nice) bike trails in the park that you
can use, too.

Thanks for the info, Marvin.

Glad to see the Gov't Canyon Project is back up and running and welcome back to
the Lone Star State!

PROJECT LEADERS -

please be sure to list your projects on the TSA Calendar page
(http://www.cavetexas.org/calendar/index.php), so all interested cavers and
prospective TSA members can see what opportunities are afforded to them to get
underground.

The only projects I have seen listed are the CBSP project weekends. (Good job,
Crash!).

Look for some new projects to be listed early next year.

Thanks,

[Texascavers] Government Canyon Karst Project on indefinite hold

2008-03-19 Thread Marvin Lisa
Cavers,

I have taken a temporary work assignment in Nashville, TN. The contract will
last at least through the end of the year, maybe longer. I am taking my
family with me but we are keeping our house in Spring Branch and hope to
return and be Texas residents again. Until I return the Government Canyon
Karst Survey Project will be on hiatus. If any of you regulars out there
have an ongoing project at the Canyon that you would like to finish in the
meantime please contact me and I will arrange things with park management. I
will continue to monitor this e-mail address and texascavers.

There's some good caving to be done around Nashville, I hear.

See you all at the convention.

[Texascavers] Government Canyon Karst Project

2007-08-11 Thread Marvin Lisa
The Government Canyon Karst Project will resume on the weekend of September
15th and 16th.

The project is a good place to learn basic caving skills and get to know
other cavers. All skill levels are needed. There are caves that need to be
surveyed and digs that need to be pushed. There are thousands of acres of
ridges to walk. The chances of finding your own cave are very good if you
are persistent. Some of the goals of this trip are to continue the survey of
Dancing Rattler Cave, find the source of all the air coming out of Dancing
Fern Cave and push a grim dig lead in the cave, re-survey Purple Mushroom
Cave and push the drain at the bottom, and ridgewalk a very promising area
of the park.

Camping is available in the secluded volunteer campground. Contact me if you
want to camp.

The January Government Canyon Karst Project will take place on the 14th and
15th. Plans are to continue the dig in Fobia Cave - following the airflow,
continue a new sinkhole dig that looks promising, survey Sotol Pit and
Purple Mushroom Cave, and if we have any time or energy left, do some
ridgewalking. You can assist in any one or all of these things by showing up
on Saturday morning. Directions are below. Camping is available at the
volunteer campground. Contact me to arrange that.

Directions to the gate of GCSNA. Find the intersection of U.S. 16 and Loop
1604 in northwest Bexar County (clearly shown on any state highway map).
Drive 2 miles north on U.S. 16 to the third traffic light and turn left onto
FM 1560 (there is a Shell station on the corner). Follow 1560 for 3 miles to
Galm Road. (Old San Antonio city maps may show another Galm Road less than
half a mile past the Shell. This road is now named something else. Ignore
and keep on to the real Galm Road.) Turn right on Galm Road and drive 2
miles to the sharp left turn in the road. The gate to GCSNA is straight
ahead. Enter at the gate and then take the first right. There is an unlocked
gate that will need to be opened and then closed behind you. Continue to the
ranch house, where we will meet.

mostly logistical, I think. We will continue pursuing all the activities we
