Re: [tw] [TW5] Impressions thus far (and TW on node.js on Android)

2016-10-21 Thread Xavier Cazin
Hi Timothy,

You really should try the Termux open source app : this is both a full
Linux box and a terminal, so you get node.js, git, etc... for the same
price (free).

You can then do things like serving your wikis to a browser running on the
localhost or even to browsers running on other hosts in your local network
(provided that you set the host parameter to 0.0.0.0 when running the
*--server* TW5 command). Just as they were served from a standard computer,
actually.

Cheers,

Xavier.

Re: [tw] Suggestion: Distraction-free editing

2016-10-21 Thread Jeremy Ruston
Hi Mark

OK, try creating a new tiddler and inserting this:

Tiddler: <$select tiddler="$:/state/side-edit-tiddler" tag="input">
<$list filter="[!is[system]sort[title]]">
>><$text text=<>/>

<$tiddler tiddler={{$:/state/side-edit-tiddler}}>
<$transclude tiddler="$:/core/ui/EditTemplate"/>

Then open that tiddler in a new window.

That gives you the full TW editor in a separate window. If you’d rather just
have the main body text editor, then substitute the following the last three
lines above:

<$edit-text tiddler={{$:/state/side-edit-tiddler}} class="tc-edit-texteditor"/>

Do beware of editing a tiddler in the side window while also editing it in the
main window.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Thanks for the suggestion, Jeremy.

Unfortunately, when I click on "open new window", I get the rendered
tiddler without controls, and the floating, editable text, stays with the
main wiki. If the editable text were to float outside the browser, then
that would be pretty much on target.

Thanks!

Have a look at it on your mobile - and image that embedded within a tidder

[tw] Re: [TW5] Prerelease of v5.1.14

2016-10-21 Thread Jed Carty
As far as security goes, as my work on federation has reminded me over and
over again, security is nuanced. QR codes don't pose any security risk to
anyone, the problem is that many QR code readers don't do any sort of
sanitation and often lack basic security features. Just about all of the
trouble from QR codes comes from naive developers assuming that nothing bad
can come from a QR code, and users trusting them.

Please don't make the mistake of confusing the statement 'there are
security concerns associated with using QR codes' with 'QR codes are a
security concern'. The horror that is browser security standards is full of
places where those two ideas have been confused and it makes developing the
federation things for tiddlywiki very annoying when it doesn't have to be.

[tw] Re: An editable tiddler within an (otherwise) ReadOnly Tiddlywiki file

2016-10-21 Thread John Newell
BJ - Hi

Man, you have almost got what I need !!!
I understand it's a quick mock-up that you have created
and I am appreciative of the effort
( and I understand it is incomplete -

   - I guess that the other tiddlers such as "Introduction Video" would
have NO editable / clickable top icons ( unlike it currently displays )
   - and that would also apply to $:/snippets/themeswitcher

For my purposes ( mainly being read on MOBILE devices - there is NO need
for the sidebar, so other functionality would be provided similar to what
was delivered on the Spiritual Quest eBook ( did you get a copy of that ? )

I agree that removal of the un-necessary buttons etc is probably cleaner -
though my coming limitations keep me restricted to the ReadOnly plugin -
which has served me well and keep time on project minimal.

I AM VERY KEEN TO SEE WHAT YOU HAVE in the upcoming days!!!

Whilst a native TW solution is best - the other options I have been
working with are looking promising as an option
and I would be keen to hear your thoughts -

HOWEVER : first I will propose the scenario

*TW eBook / app * (

   - standalone html file -
   - all inclusive viewable on most browsers
   - some content ( that needs to be time-relevant - eg events/ venue
updates - are internet-fed and delivered as embeds )

next - the product :

   - is NOT a novel - assume that it is a "*reference*" work - ( my current
*Tourism
   Directory* project will suffice )
   - --- accommodation | wineries | attractions | dining | Relaxation |
sports | tours | breweries | retailing etc
   - This requires the use of tags and workable navigation options (
WITHOUT the reader access to a sidebar )
   - --- tags to provide LISTS of same groupings ( as above and by
   location | other categoies : Eat | Drink | Stay | Play | etc
   - so far - all covered really well..

NEXT - a good marketing tools needs a way for future customers to add
notes/dates into Journals / Notepads ( as would other books that create
ideas and challenges etc ) - and theres plenty of opportunity for the user
/ reader / tourist to initiate interaction or bookings with listed clients.

   - Other chapters ( / tiddlers / pages ) within the *Tourism Directory* can
be created specifically for the Reader for Notes
   - These would likely be located at the beginning or end of each chapter
as reference points for their notes
   - These Notes Pages would have links to them in the Directory Listings
   - These Notes Pages should be UNIQUE, PRIVATE notes that the reader can *add
to - edit and delete - AND SAVE *as neccesary
   - As the primary device WILL be mobile phones the interface needs to be
clean - as a fresh tidder is !
   - App interaction suddenly becomes a great tool - IF IT SUITS THE USER
   - some will be comfortable and want to use apps ( eg evernote |
penzu | "pen.io" etc ) some will as the notes taken in-app can appear in
   their TW pages !
   - --- these would be embeds - all tested so far are editable on
desktop / mobile app / embed within tiddler
   - some will not - and an editable Tiddler woudl be the alternative.

That is likely FAR MORE info than you would like - but I am "in the groove"
with this as it grows more attractive and desirable by the day

Let's keep in touch
you have my details ?
if not - connect via @magillamax on tw and I'll get my other connection
details to you ( if you are OK with that )

Obviously most of what I learn through development of this and other TW
instances for public consumption will be shared around..

cheers and thanks again.

I fully agree that Mat's "Side Editor" is neat & might suit your needs. You
need a bit of screen estate for it. Its very solid & reliable.

You can find it here: http://sideeditor.tiddlyspot.com/

Re: [tw] Suggestion: Distraction-free editing

2016-10-21 Thread Jeremy Ruston
Hi Mark

Mat has a thing called “side editor” that is designed to present a single
tiddler in the sidebar for editing. There is a dropdown to choose which tiddler
you are editing.

You should be able to use Mat’s thing in a separate window just by navigating
to the corresponding tiddler and clicking “open in new window”.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

Re: [tw] [TW5] Avoid the "Recent" tab

2016-10-21 Thread Josiah
Ciao Jeremy, Thomas & Mark H.

Just a general comment.

Since TW is one file running in a BROWSER it makes sense to HONE usage to
match what you need do most often. In my use of TW I switch OFF as much as
possible

PART of the issue is the sheer INEFFICIENCY of major browsers at memory
handling. TBH browsers (Firefox, Chrome) cause me more hassle than most
anything else on my computer now. Their memory architecture is pathetic.

There is a lesson in that, because TW can only function as well as its
host. What is my point? That some issues in TW are nothing directly to do
with it, but essentially current browser limits.

Best wishes
Josiah

It is probably easier to use

2016-10-21 Thread HC Haase
Thanks, that did it!

However that gave me some new trouble. I Also want to do the opposite
count. So I figured I could do it with a the negative prefix !, like

<$count filter="[!is[system]!tag[xx]!tag[xx]tagging[]]"/>

(I want a count of tiddlers that is not system, not taged xx or tagged with
a tiddler that is taged with xx)

But it gives me a wrong/unexpected result. it count around 30 tiddlers to
much (ap 6% in my case).

One of my plugins could be used for this, it allow tiddlers to have an
'application type' and has methods to provide custom edit and view
templates for the different applications. I have put a demo here:
http://editablereadonly.tiddlyspot.com/
I am modifying this at the moment so it will not be ready for release for a
couple of days.

I would say that I am not in favor of hiding stuff with styles (like with
the read only theme). I prefer to remove the tags from the buttons and
other components that are not to be displayed.

All the best

Most of that article is about a specific usage of QR codes to contain login
credentials for an online service.

But really all the risks that are discussed are the risks associated with links
to malware. The problem is trusting hyperlinks, and it doesn’t matter whether
those links are distributed via email, a website, a QR code, Bluetooth, or some
other means.

In the particular case of QR codes, the biggest risks are associated with
reader software that automatically navigates to URLs; that’s as bad as an email
app that renders untrusted HTML content.

A critical point to grasp about federation is that there is no requirement for
shared access to a common server. Every participant publishes on their own
server, and the client software retrieves the distributed fragments of a
discussion, and threads them together for reading.

As noted above, this is no different than the risks of clicking on an ordinary
HTML hyperlink.

I did google that phrase, and think the results are actually pretty misleading.
Security is a complex business, and these articles evoke the overly simple idea
that QR codes have intrinsic vulnerabilities.

2016-10-21 Thread Jeremy Ruston
Hi Thomas

> So one could set a lower limit to speed things up? (And maybe add a more…
> link)

Yes. But you’d probably get more of an improvement from replacing the current
“Recent” tab with a variant that showed a plain list of titles and dates,
rather than grouping the tiddlers by day, which is an expensive operation.

I’ve answered the questions here directly, but I’m concerned that a narrow
answer can be misleading.

Software developers are taught that premature optimisation is evil; instead,
we’re taught to measure, measure and measure again, and make sure that any
changes have the expected impact.

So a useful conclusion to be drawn from this thread is not that everyone should
go and re-engineer their “Recent” tab, but rather this: if there is a
noticeable pause when switching to the “Recent” tab then your wiki probably
qualifies as a “big wiki” (or your browser qualifies as a slow browser :).

In that situation, the first thing I would do is think about how I use the
wiki, and just avoid the operations that are time consuming. Only as an
absolute last resort would I start to customise the wiki, and I would do so
with stopwatch in hand to ensure that my efforts were directed in the most
effective way.

Best wishes

Jeremy

[tw] Re: An editable tiddler within an (otherwise) ReadOnly Tiddlywiki file

2016-10-21 Thread Thomas Elmiger
Hi everyone!

My (very simple) approach would be to integrate a tool like
https://grosinger.net/tw5-checklist/ and a save-button into one ore
multiple tiddlers.

   - Maybe hide the checkbox using CSS.
   - Of course style the rest for multi-line entries.
   - Maybe put everyting in a notes section that can be shown or hidden
   using a button.

This way the text ist stored in the text-field of the tiddler where it is
searchable.

The main difficulty I see is saving – not every reader would be enjoying
the comfort of TiddlyFox.

Good luck!
Thomas

Re: [tw] [TW5] Avoid the "Recent" tab

2016-10-21 Thread Thomas Elmiger
Hi Jeremy

So one could set a lower limit to speed things up? (And maybe add a more… link)

Kind regards
Thomas
