[tw] Re: TiddlyDesktop

2017-11-17 Thread Alfonso Arciniega
Iain and Mark,

   1. Firefox Portable Legacy 36_3.6.28 (FPL) is noticeable faster than
   TiddlyDesktop and does not have any issues with TWC;
   2. FPL may be used portable (even running from an USB is faster that TW
   Deskop installed locally), and occupies less than half the size;
   3. FPL is able to run some TWC plugins that TiddlyDesktop cannot (e.g.
   LessBackupsPlugin by Simon Baird)
   4. My two TWC TW's are version 2.8.1; upgrading them to 2.9.0 beta 3
   won't do anything;

I tried converting my two large and highly customized Gething Things Done
(mGSD) TW's to TW5 Cardo 1.0. However, I believe Cardo is still in
development. This task would be too much effort for half the gain at this
point in time; maybe in the future.

Alfonso

Yeah, this plugin just reacts to the screen being narrowed and doesn't
really set visibility-tiddlers. Thanks for the tb5 link!

Wow, I've forgotten about the subreddit! When I first started using TW5

[tw] Re: [TW5] Datebook or Journal for the new year

2017-11-17 Thread Greg Davis
That time of year again so, continuing on the topic of calendars, I took a
different approach this year. This time a simple picture calendar with
tabs. Nothing fancy with macros or templates. Again used BJ's Calendar
Plugin.

Quick reminders or maybe quotes or verses might be added. The area for the
picture is very limited, but if you don't mind hiding the Sidebar then much
large pictures could be used.

Sorry, not for small portrait screens.

You can find it here: http://tabbed-calendar.tiddlyspot.com

Have fun,
Greg

[tw] Possible bug in TiddlyFox

2017-11-17 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
I know at this point this may seem like worrying about a design failure in
a buggy whip, but I may have detected a bug in TiddlyFox 2 when used with
FF ESR 52+ (and probably all versions of FF before FF56).

The little kitty stands on a ball that is slightly blue -- until you move
it to it's own window. Then the ball greys out. Clicking on the kitty just
brings up a small blank screen. More importantly, the TiddlyWiki doesn't
save.

Thanks!
Mark

[tw] Re: Testers needed for new save extension 'savetiddlers'

2017-11-17 Thread Alfonso Arciniega
Thanks for the extensions, BJ,

Tested on Windows 10

On Chrome 62.0 it works fine.

On Firefox 57.0, it works though not straightforward. I always the
following message: "TW not in tiddlywikilocations within the download
directory.
using default download directory" which is not true, and have to select
the tiddlywikilocations directory (under my default Downloads directory)
manually.

Any clues?

Second thoughts: any way there may be more than one backup file per day?

The main thing that I don't like about reddit is that it seems to have been
built as a forum for debate. The problem is, you can't re-edit an item.
This seems a bit limiting.

[tw] Re: TiddlyDesktop

2017-11-17 Thread Alfonso Arciniega
For everyone that still use TWC, I recommend do not use TiddlyDesktop (any
version).

I use TWC daily due to a couple of TW's that cannot be converted to TW5
TW's due to the extensive use of customization and plugins and large amount
of data.

The best solution to me is to have a portable version of an old version of
FF for exclusive use of these TWC TW's. This version is very small, super
fast, does not messes with other programs or options, and may run out of an
USB. The only caveats are that it cannot be run with another FF version at
the same time, and cannot open TW5 TW's.

Download the FF portable, almost any language you want, from:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/Mozilla%20Firefox%2C%20Portable%20Ed./Mozilla%20Firefox%2C%20Portable%20Edition%203.6.28/

You may also want to visit:

The interface is fine. What does the "Open Dashboard" do? It does nothing

[tw] Re: A Rant

2017-11-17 Thread Riz
Thank you Ste.

Yes, we do have reddit. Much of the features demanded in the couple of threads
have been met in there. For eg:

1) It is free.
2) We can tag and categorize the posts. We can also tag/flair users. If you
click on a tag, it will show all the posts with same tag. Especially useful
if you want to check out some things like "what all plugins are available to
TW5".
3) We can have multiple community moderaters with different levels of access.
4) A sidebar with relevant intoductionary information and important links.
5) A wiki, the editing access of which can be made open to all or multiple.
authorised personnel.

It is all there. We do keep it updated with major announcements from the group.
So if you are interested in TW5 enough to stay up to date, but do not want to
be bothered by each and every post in the group, you can either add
http://www.reddit.com/r/TiddlyWiki5 to your rss feed. If you are a redditor,
wowsie, do subscribe it.

Things are bit quite in there is the issue. We could use a hand, mostly if
you care to announce your works in there along with the group. It will be
easier for people to find your work in reddit rather than in here.

I'm thinking of wiki-how and fandom community wikis, for example, whose

[tw] pandoc and markdown to TW format

2017-11-17 Thread Shay Shaked
So I installed the markdown plugin, works ok, but the problem is that it
doesn't play nice inside TW. some markings (like strikethrough) and my own
Macros, highlight to text, journal entries and the like do not play nice in
TW. So, I was looking at pandoc to help me convert markdown to WikiText,
which exists, but then TW is not exactly WikiText

Did anyone build a TW extension to pandoc perhaps? Can this be done? Or, is
there a plugin to TW that understands WikiText?

Actually you can't save with Ctl-S. If you do the resulting file will be

[tw] Re: Yearning for ONE method ...

2017-11-17 Thread 'Mark S.' via TiddlyWiki
*Reposting with fixes:*

Which method of saving are you intending to use?

For *default saving*, your file has to go in the browser downloads
directory OR, if you change setting to "ask each time" you can save
anywhere.

But, if you save with default saving without "ask each time" each save will
be made like file(1), file(2), etc. Which means when you restart your
browser you will need to find the last file(x) and launch that one.

If you use *BJ or Mario's save plugin*, then for *BJ's* plugin
(https://github.com/buggyj/savetiddlers) your file location is

*/tiddlywikilocations/file *or

*/tiddlywikilocations//file*

and for *Mario's* plugin
(https://github.com/pmario/file-backups#installation) it's

*//file *or
*///file*

This sounds limiting, but you can put a symbolic link (linux) or a junction
(windows) in which can point to anywhere else on your
hard drive.

You can find information for making symbolic links (linux) or junctions
(windows) on line. I don't know what kinds of links are available for Macs,
but I assume they have them also.

Hopefully this clears things a little,

but with a different text. For this to work we need to improve the

[tw] Helping savetiddlers documentation

2017-11-17 Thread Dave Gifford - http://www.giffmex.org/
Hi all

Just a couple recommendations for the documentation at
https://github.com/buggyj/savetiddlers, as non-technical Dave tries to wrap
his head around this and runs into hiccups along the way. I started with
Chrome, gave up, and tried again, successfully, with Firefox. I did not go
back and use what I had learned in the Firefox process to see if Chrome
worked for me.

1. The current documentation made me think the tiddlywikilocations folder
had to be in the (in my case, Windows) Downloads directory. But after
experimenting it seems that what is meant is that it has to be in whatever
directory the user has told their browser to download files to (in my case,
the desktop). You could save new users some grief by clearing that up.

2. There is a spelling error 'Dowload' in both the Firefox and Chromium
instructions. Minor thing, but when new users are trying to slavishly
follow instructions, this is the kind of thing that gives them some anxiety.

3. Chrome was giving me warnings telling me to Disable developer mode
extensions. It looks as if this popup will come up everytime I open the
file. You should address that in the documentation.

4. You should maybe explain the default behavior: eg this for Firefox:
"savetiddlers will then overwrite the file in the tiddlywikilocations
folder, and if you have specified backups to be made, those backups will
appear in the folder where you specified them to be created."

Hope that helps with onboarding a little. Blessings.

Do you guys think it would be useful to move this discussion to
github under a "Improve New User Onboarding Experience" issue? That way we
can have a larger discussion and perhaps generate some action items?

Hi Furicle. I understand you are not a develope and thus you have a hard
time using docker, node.js, etc.
However, TW5 is actually easy to use without servers and development tools.
You just save the web page with ctrl + s and then you open it again.
As simple as that.
This is one of the most important goals of this app's, a serverless one
page, one file application that won't need external tools, other than a
modern browser.

Re: [tw] A Rant

2017-11-17 Thread Abraham Samma
Usability for newbies is a challenge for TW5 users but it is not
insurmountable.

Take my project Maarfapad which gives you access to a TW5 cloud service
among other things: I've had some success with getting newbies on board by
providing them with a simple *interactive* manual inside their wikis that
takes them through most of TW5's functionality step by step. The fact that
it helped even my mother (a person who tries to stay away from computers
most of the time) understand how tiddlywiki works enough to actually USE it
is encouraging.

I believe designing less verbose, more interactive manuals within wikis
will help gain more users. Its kind of like designing video game tutorials.
You want the user to pick up essentials easily and let them master it by
himself using those first principles.

This discussion is very interesting! Thanks to the person who started it.

[tw] Modifying TiddlyDesktop

2017-11-17 Thread 'Stephen Kimmel' via TiddlyWiki
The Firefox Apocalypse (well done whoever dreamed up that phrase) has
prompted me to start looking at TiddlyDesktop more closely. One thing that
isn't clear at all is how to modify it. I know. I know. There's the help
file but I didn't find it very helpful.

So, as a start, let me get very specific. Suppose I wanted to get rid of
the "Add a TiddlyWiki Folder" button. How would I do that?

Or consider the "advanced" button. As close as I can tell, the only thing
that does is display a "reveal backups" button. How would I change the
"advanced" button to the "reveal backups" button.

Or change the colors?

Or change the order in which the tiddlers are listed (which appears to be
alphabetical)?

Stephen

With "file-backups" AddOn It can be:

a) /file.html or
b) //file.html or
c) ///file.html and so
on.

I personally use option b) and link it with a windows directory link
(junction).

You are right. .. but the 2 clicks are only needed the very first time a
new TW is detected.

This behaviour is only needed, since the browser doesn't give us the
actually configured downloads directory. We need to save a file, to see,
where it is saved, to be sure.
This will be a feature request for the mozilla and chrome devs. ... I
didn't create it yet, since I need to prepare a minimal test case, so they
see, that this API is needed.

That's not true.

If you open a TW that is outside of the browser downloads directory it
needs to insist, because we can only save to the downloads directory and
its subdirectories.
As long as a TW is opened inside the download dir, it is just saved. ...
The 2 click initial save is still needed. See above.

As I did review my own intro videos, I did see some workflow improvements,
which are implemented atm but I didn't want to have a fixed directory
structure like: tiddlywikilocations

That's right. I do intend to port it to Chrome, but that's low on my
priority list.

That's right. And once this bug
 is fixed in TW, we
both will have much more interesting options to create "out of order"
saves. Which can be managed entirely by users.

I didn't want to start a competition with the file-backups AddOn, I just
wanted to have a choice.

The "tower of hanoi" backup rotation schema, is in my head for years, as an
alternative for the LessBackupsPlugin from TWcalssic. Since the file names
are 100% predictable, there is no need for any internal management
algorithm, that can run out of sync. The only parameter, that is really
important for the AddOn at the moment is the "save-counter". ... And if the
above mentioned bug ist fixed, even this one can be eliminated.

have fun!

[tw] Re: Tiddly Extension for Firefox 57?

2017-11-17 Thread Platykurtic
If you plan on using the savetiddlers add-in/extension & wish to use your
existing TiddlyWiki central directory (I have a notes directory that I use
for all my TiddlyWikis) then I recommend that you use the mklink command to
create the tiddlywikilocations directory. By using a hard junction link
from the original directory to tiddlywikilocations one can backup your
tiddly wikis into Dropbox, Box, Google Drive etc. To establish the junction
link run cmd.exe with administrator priviledges & enter the following
command in Windows (adjusted for your directories' locations obviously.)

mklink /J "C:\Users\\Downloads\tiddlywikilocations"
"C:\Users\\Dropbox\TiddlyWiki_Notes"

This will create the tiddlywikilocations directory (for user ) & saves
of the various TiddlyWikis will now point back to the TiddlyWiki_Notes
directory where (in this example) Dropbox will do it's thing. Of course one
should 'open' the TiddlyWiki from the tiddlywikilocations directory (which
will in fact open it from the TiddlyWiki_Notes directory.) Once this is
set-up everything more or less runs similar to the old TiddlyFox add-in but
with the new (and awesome) Firefox v57.

Sure, I'll add another font-increase level for 1.0.1 :)

For the meantime, is 'Customize fonts and heights' not working properly in
your browser? I've only ever tested this plugin on Chrome and IE so I've no
idea if other browsers have compatibility issues

Also, I'll look into that fullscreen bug. I tried replicating that problem
on Chrome for Android and yep, there's a bug! This might be due to a
missing syntax in a plugin tiddler somewhere...

[tw] [TW5] How to save with Firefox Quantum - WebDAV

2017-11-17 Thread Stephan Hradek
I got a new computer at work and quickly installed Firefox.
Of course it was Quantum and now TiddlyFox doesn't work anymore.

I looked at https://tiddlywiki.com/#GettingStarted:GettingStarted to find
alternatives.

While I think Mario's file-backup is quite good, I didn't like that I have
to click on the "diamond" to save instead of what I used to do.

Then I saw: Saving via WebDAV

Since I'm a customer of gmx and I know that their MediaCenter is accessible
via WebDAV, I simply tried it.

I created a wiki folder in my media center and put an empty.html there.

Then I opened https://webdav.mc.gmx.net/wiki/empty.html

I was asked for my gmx username and password and - Voilá - I'm there.

I then created a new tiddler and saved it.

Then I went to another browser and opened the same URL there.

It worked.

So good news is: The information on tiddlywiki.com

Since I offer this Discourse to french community, I indeed think that forum
like Discourse can do the job like Google Groups do (post/reply email,
multi-device, wiki, etc..) Since it's Stackoverflow creator, they have

It cost me 3€ per month. For a largeur audience, we could need more robust

[tw] Re: Would this group be better on WhatsApp?

2017-11-17 Thread Tristan Kohl
I don:t think we will need real-time chat at all as TW is about knowledge
exchange and information which is usually not that time critical. A real
forum would support way better search capabilities as topics are split up.

If we really want to chat like in a hangout I think a classic IRC (maybe
with a webinterface for those without clients) would be the best option as
anybody may participate whenever they want. My experience from i.e.
WhatsApp groups is the big problem of noise created when the number of
people grows beyond a specific threshold (~20). One can mute the chat but
nonetheless messages are coming in and you loose track. With IRC you just
don't start the client if you don't want to read it.

Plus it would be better for privacy as nobody has to share stuff like their
phone number if they don't want to.

Just my two cents.

[tw] TiddlyDesktop messages in Linux terminal - should I be worried?

2017-11-17 Thread AndrewMc
Hi All

I have just downloaded and installed the ninth release of TiddlyDesktop
(v0.0.9) on my Linux machine (Ubuntu 16.04).
I ran the nw file. This successfully opened TiddlyDesktop, but an error
appeared in the terminal:

[5600:5600:1117/203400.220030:ERROR:sandbox_linux.cc(346)]
InitializeSandbox() called with multiple threads in process gpu-process.

Should I be concerned at this message?

I also had a couple more messages appear:
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is
discouraged.
Gtk-Message: GtkDialog mapped without a transient parent. This is
discouraged.

These seem to be more like advisories and so can be ignored by me, but I am
left wondering about them. Is anyone able to tell me anything about these
Gtk messages?

Lastly, I will just say that (apart from these Linux terminal messages)
TiddlyDesktop seems great. I have finally made a start on using TW for a
couple of book translations and am really looking forward to the
possibilities that TW will provide.

Cheers
