dynamical class loading
hi everybody, I asked a question on the users mailing list about classloading and someone advised me to ask it to a tomcat's developper. So this is my situation : I got 2 interfaces that have to be loaded dynamically according a request made to a JSP. I know the name of the interfaces and by default I have a wrong version of these interfaces in my WEB-INF/classes/ path. I tried to load theses interfaces using a URLClassLoader unsuccessfully. I also tried to replace the .class in WEB-INF/classes/, but the problem is that the webapp is reloading itself. Any idea about how to do that? Is Tomcat able to load classes without reloading the whole webapp or restarting ? Thank you in advance and have a nice day. _ Trouvez vos fichiers en un clin dil : Windows Desktop Search http://desktop.msn.fr/ - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Java version is 1.4.2_03 and Tomcat 4.1.29. As the chances for the described scenario are slim, I suggest to reduce the value of ManagerBase.SESSION_ID_BYTES from 16 to 2 or 3 for testing. This should increase the chances of duplicates returned by ManagerBase.generateSessionId() without affecting the behaviour of Tomcat. Additionally, I put a Thread.yield() below the end of the sychronized block in ManagerBase.createSession(), to provoke the racing time condition, further increasing the chances for the scenario. Then I started Tomcat with the JSP page session.jsp: %@ page language=java %%= request.getSession().getId() % The test application performs repeated request from different threads, recoding the returned session ids and checking for duplicates. Even with the reduced random range it might take several runs to stumble into a duplicate. I'm sure there are better ways to test it, it is just a simple test. I'm not saying this is an urgent problem, or that it happens all the time, I merely think that it can happen, because random numbers, however large the range might be, are not unique by themselves, are they? And if it can happen, it will happen, eventually. Or am I missing something here? The whole idea of even checking for duplicates is a nonsense (beyond giving people some sense of safety). If the id generation has conflicts, then it means the system is completely insecure, so fixing a bug which will never actually occur doesn't have any benefits. -- Configure bugmail: http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you have zillions of JARs, then there's no solution. The MS stuff and the Sun JVM seem to both be optimized so that JAR file locking (or even regular file locking) will almost always occur. The workaround for all problems is to copy the whole thing to the temp folder, and just run it from there. JBoss does the same thing to allow hot deployment. The other workaround is to consider using OSes with more flexible filesystems. I told you already that antiJARLocking and antiResourceLocking don't do the same thing, and using both is not very useful. Re: dynamical class loading
Hi, I know the name of the interfaces and by default I have a wrong version of these interfaces in my WEB-INF/classes/ path. Don't have a wrong version by default, that's a bad practice. I tried to load theses interfaces using a URLClassLoader unsuccessfully. I also tried to replace the .class in WEB-INF/classes/, but the problem is that the webapp is reloading itself. Turn off the reloadable property of your webapp by adding reloadable=false to the context definition. If you do want to dynamically load classes, just use Class.forName(my.class.name). Any idea about how to do that? See above. Is Tomcat able to load classes without reloading the whole webapp or restarting ? Yes, read the documentation on Class.forName and the context reloadable property. Once you've done that and/or tried the above, please post further questions to the tomcat-user mailing list. This list is for Tomcat's internal development discussions. (You're of course welcome to hang around and chat here, but only about topics that related to Tomcat's own internal development) Thank you ;) Yoav - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Tomcat Snapshots
Hi, I'm curious about the importance of nightly snapshots: who uses them? We have a nightly source tarball already available at http://cvs.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat-5/nightly/, so this seems redundant. If neither you (Henri) nor I knew about it in the years we've been involved, it's probably not being used by too many people ;) jakarta-tomcat jakarta-tomcat-4.0 jakarta-tomcat-5 jakarta-tomcat-catalina jakarta-tomcat-jasper jakarta-tomcat-connectors jakarta-tools jakarta-watchdog jakarta-servletapi jakarta-servletapi-4 jakarta-servletapi-5 jakarta-watchdog-4.0 I need to identify the svn match to each one of those to continue the snapshots going. ie) jakarta-tomcat-tools = tomcat/archive/tools/trunk/ Though I imagine something in archive/ isn't a candidate for snapshotting. Could you let me know which parts of the tomcat svn directory you'd like me to set snapshotting up for? Right now I'd say none, as it seems unnecessary. For the archived ones (jakarta-tomcat-tools and jakarta-watchdog-*), we don't need any snapshots. But maybe I'm missing something. [PATCH] Catalina CGIServlet broken redirects
Title: [PATCH] Catalina CGIServlet broken redirects Hello, The Catalina CGIServlet (as of tomcat 5.0.28) does not have a special case for handling Status headers set by a cgi script. When a script tries to issue a redirect, tomcat returns inconsistent headers: HTTP/1.x 200 OK Status: 300 Moved This behaviour breaks the redirect. Attached is a patch which adds a special case for Status headers to catalina/src/share/org/apache/catalina/servlets/CGIServlet.java The patch was written against the tomcat 5.0.28 sources. Product: Tomcat 5 Version: 5.5.9 Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: Catalina AssignedTo: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Here is a catch-22. We want to use deployer to deploy web applications to target servers. It formalises the process of build a little more. However, deployer does not work well on Windows as JARs get left behind. Furthermore another bug I submitted yesterday shows that deploying, restarting the Windows service and then undeploying breaks. That restart bug aside, in order to even get deploy and undeploy to work we have to use antiJARLocking=true antiResourceLocking=true on our context. I added this just the other day and I noticed that starting Tomcat took a whole lot longer than usual (nearly 1 minute), and that compiling class changes to my development Tomcat did not cause the usual web application reload (as indicated by reloadable=true on the context). I decided that the only thing I changed was the antiJARLocking=true antiResourceLocking=true attributes. I took them off today and Tomcat starts up in 20s. Furthermore, compiling class changes works again. I thought about why this might be and we have 18M of lib JARs. In order for the anti locking to work I notice that copies are made to a temp folder. I can only assume therefore that having so many JARs in a web application lib combined with using the anti locking features causes this huge degradation in ability to develop and test. I've made sure this is definately the problem by adding and removing the antiJARLocking=true antiResourceLocking=true attributes a few times, and it always varies from 58s and no reloading with them set to true and 20s and reloading ok with them false.

I use a Map (stored as an attribute of the ServletContext) to keep track of the active http sessions. Using Tomcat 5.5.9 I didn't have any problem logging-out, but with Tomcat 5.5.12 when I try to invalidate a session I get an ISE (getId: Session already invalidated). (In reply to comment #0) After a http session is invalidated a call to getId() throws an IllegalStateException(already invalidated). I think this doesn't conform to the servlet spec that doesn't say anything about an ISE in the api doc. All ISEs that can be thrown by the session-methods are explicit listed. Beside this it is very essential to have the sessionId at least during HttpSessionBindingListener.valueUnbound() if this method is called during the invalidation. Tomcat ApplicationDispatcher forward handling
We have a question about QueryString handling in tomcat. We have a simple question; we noticed that tomcat carries querystring forward on forward requests if the current forward querystring is NULL only. Is this the correct behavior and if so; were is this documented? We've been through the Servlet 2.4 spec and can't find a definition of this behavior. The specification indicates that javax.servlet.forward.query_string should reflect the initial client requested query string; however the specification seems quiet about request.getQueryString's behavior. Any insight would be helpful. RE: More helpful reporting of exceptions in JSPs
The 'correct' way to do this is to create an enhancement request in bugzilla and attach your patch to it. Mark -Original Message- From: Tim Fennell [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, October 09, 2005 10:50 PM To: tomcat-dev@jakarta.apache.org Subject: More helpful reporting of exceptions in JSPs Hi, I'll apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to post this, or if this has been covered before. I had a good read through the Tomcat docs and faqs, searched the bug database, and googled around on the topic, but could not really find anything. I've been using Tomcat for a while, and in general have found it as good a servlet/JSP container as any I've used. With one exception (no pun intended). A long time ago I started out using WebLogic, and the one thing that I loved about WebLogic, that is missing from Tomcat, is that when an Exception occurred in a JSP it would tell you what line number *in the JSP* generated the exception, and show you a snippet of code around the offending line. For quite a while I'd figured that the way Tomcat was built prevented this from being easy/possible, but I didn't look. Well, I finally got around to looking, and it only took me a couple of hours to implement it. Which makes me wonder if there is some other reason that this isn't done in Tomcat/Jasper? At any rate, I have code that will do this now, and I think it'd be a great productivity boost for anyone else developing JSPs on Tomcat. It amounts to small patches to two files. The first is org.apache.jasper.compiler.Compiler to make it hang on to the parse tree (pageNodes) if in development mode, and a getter to make this accessible. The second is to org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServletWrapper to do the grunt work of mapping a stack frame from the exception back to the line in the JSP that it came from. It's all coded up to function only when in development mode, and is reasonably well commented. Would any of the committers be interested in taking a look at this if I put together a patch and posted it here? Hi, I think it's OK now to have /www/jakarta.apache.org/tomcat be a checkout of the SVN tomcat/site/trunk. I just updated SVN tomcat/site/trunk to show 5.5.12 is latest stable, and committed, but the SVN update is still looking at the old version... More helpful reporting of exceptions in JSPs
Hi, I'll apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to post this, or if this has been covered before. The directory strcuture may not be the nicest in the world but I spent some time thinking about it and it is the best I could come up with. There is a better, but longer, explanation on the svn page I put together for the TLP. Take a look at http://people.apache.org/~markt/tomcattlp/svn.html Using externals wasn't something I had thought of but if offers a nice way to provide all the source for one version in a single chekcout. Helper script to build source from scratch
For anyone still getting up to speed using svn and making a new build - here is script which works for me via cygwin. It should work fine in any unix environment too. Steps - Place the script in an empty directory. - Make sure ANT_HOME and JAVA_HOME are set - Make sure svn is in your path - Run the script and the svn checkout as well as the download and full build will be done. Since there is a /current/ alias - is the 'ant update' task needed anymore? -Tim #!/bin/sh # # This is a quickie helper script to easily build tomcat 5 from source. # This will create a subdirectory called tc5build and build # tomcat 5 into it. # # Here are the requirements to get this to run # 1) Set JAVA_HOME to a 1.4 compliant JDK # ex: /opt/java1.4 # 2) Set ANT_HOME to your ant installation (You need ant 1.6 or better) # ex: /opt/jakarta/jakarta-ant-1.6 # 3) Make sure svn is in your path # 4) Make sure NetComponents.jar is installed in $ANT_HOME/lib #which can be found at http://www.savarese.org/oro/index.html #[Not sure if this step is still required for Ant to download things.] # # # Some help functions # TC_ECHO() { echo INFO: `date '+%H:%M:%S'` - $1 } TC_DOH() { echo ERROR: `date '+%H:%M:%S'` - $1 } # # cygwin - The UI of unix and the stability of windows. # cygwin=false case `uname` in CYGWIN*) cygwin=true;; esac # # Check for JAVA_HOME # if [ Z = Z$JAVA_HOME ] ; then TC_DOH Where is JAVA_HOME! exit 1 fi # # Check for ANT_HOME # if [ Z = Z$ANT_HOME ] ; then TC_DOH Where is ANT_HOME! Re: Building isapi_redirect on Win 2003
Hello, A few questions hopefully you guys can help: 1) The instructions here: http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/connectors-doc/install/iis.html mentions about using VS 6.0 and IIS developers SDK but what OS version I should be using to compile isapi_redirect? Windows 2000 or 2003 server? 2) I compiled a Release(not Debug) of isapi_redirect.dll version 1.2.14 successfully on Windows 2003 Std Server using VS .Net but the resulting isapi_redirect file size is 160kb. The isapi_redirect version 1.2.14 we can download from: http://apache.towardex.com/jakarta/tomcat-connectors/jk/binaries/win32/jk-1.2.14/ has filesize = 240kb. I wonder how the downloaded version was compiled to make it a different size. I am sure it is not the debug version cause I compiled a Debug isapi_redirect.dll on Windows 2003 std server using VS .Net and it's filesize came out to be 268kb. Any help appreciated. Thank you. Great job anyway ;) Rémy - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [VOTE] 5.5.12 Stability
I have one of my weired bugs Remy and it affects 5.5.9+. I've mentioned it before about auto deployment of WARs. This time I am working out as best I can the critical failure point, but essentially a valid WAR is not being deployed and it appears to be linked to the number of JARs in the lib folder (in this case 20MB) and a web.xml that contains custom context listeners. On auto deploy the error yields web.xml cannot be found which is false. Depending on how many JARs I delete from the LIB folder, the WAR explodes or does not with the error. I will have a bug report that explains in more detail the process I have gone through. Re: [VOTE] 5.5.12 Stability
Sorry for jumping in this thread, but should 5.5.12 considered stable (as it seems) are there plans to release a stable version of 5.0.x? 5.0.31 or something? regards Leon - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
