Re: Tomcat as service

2004-07-23 Thread Bill Barker
The service exe that ships with newer versions of TC 5 won't run on W9x
(and, I'm not certain about NT4 :). However, you can still run it from the
command line.

I was just installing tomcat this morning and I noticed that even if you
uncheck the service option during the installation it still installs as a
service (just doesn't start it). Does this cause any issues under windows
 95/98?

Embedding ${} syntax in jsp pages

2004-07-23 Thread Ess Ci
Hello,
I see some of the examples shipped with 5.0.25 tomcat contains ${} embedded
jsp commands, as below:

 tr
td\${1}/td
td${1}/td
  /tr
  tr
td\${1 + 2}/td
td${1 + 2}/td
  /tr
  tr
td\${1.2 + 2.3}/td
td${1.2 + 2.3}/td
  /tr
However, as I create a new tomcat application directory (Es. /myexamples)
and try to use the same jsp syntax I only get symple html output, without
${} command interpretation.

Does someone know the reason? Is it some directive missing in web.xml file?
Thanks and best regards
Stefano

Re: WebSphere suuports servlets in /welcome-list does Tomcat?

2004-07-23 Thread Bill Barker
Suite yourself :). The other work-around would be to put a (possibly empty)
index.do file to let Tomcat know that there is something there for it to
serve.

R A [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message

 The point of me adding

 servlet-mapping
   servlet-nameaction/servlet-name
   url-pattern*.do/url-pattern
 /servlet-mapping

is that I want all request that match *.do to go through the Sruts
ActionServlet. This includes any *.do in the welcome-list/. The
ActionServlet delegates the request to the RequestProcessor, which uses the
command pattern to map to the appropriate action. It should not be necessary
to add index.do as a servlet.

 Bill Barker [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Tomcat 5 supports servlets as welcome-files, just not extension-mapped
ones
(e.g. *.do, *.jsp). The reason is that extension-mapped servlets would
alway be choosen, even though in most cases the servlet couldn't handle
it.

 Simply adding a mapping like:

 action
 /index.do

 solves your problem.

 R A wrote in message

When entering a servlet(action) in the tag, Tomcat returns
a directory listing. Does it support servlets in the tags?

Re: precompiling jsp files gives error

2004-07-23 Thread Surendra Kumar
Well i used the jspc.sh shipped with Tomcat 4.1.29 and it compiles the
included jsp files within jsp.
Even i have tried with ANT and it works fine.

Does this jsp compile in the rutime / tomcat ?

Yes it is there in the classpath...Moreover,when I try to run the
build.xml file as given in the tomcat docs , it runs fine until it
encounters the compile error problem because of the included jsp files
within jsp files. This was the reason I tried running the changed build.xml
file (tomcat-precompile-jsp.xml file) as suggested by one of the developers
here, but it is giving me build failed as mentioned earlier...

 Can anybody please help ?

I immediately looked at what was using port 8080 (nothing to my
knowledge) and this was confirmed. I ran netstat which confirmed that
port 8080 was not in use.
TC appears to have started, but http://localhost:8080 (with

Thanks

either a tomcat process, still running, or another program (oracle,...)
Check all your current process, or simply reboot.

Re: precompiling jsp files gives error

2004-07-23 Thread johan . philippe
The class it reports missing is from the logging package:

commons-logging-api.jar

The next missing class from your classpath might be Log4J

FYI: the package from the missing class gives you an idea
of the jar that is missing.

Yes it is there in the classpath...Moreover,when I try to run the build.xml
file as given in the tomcat docs , it runs fine until it encounters the compile
error problem because of the included jsp files within jsp files. This was the
reason I tried running the changed build.xml file (tomcat-precompile-jsp.xml

failed as mentioned earlier...

Re: Does tomcat5 support digest authentication?

There is only very minimal support for DIGEST authentication. So minimal that in
practice I can't see how it could be of any use at this point in time.

It is on the list to be improved, but no idea for when:

I think it supports digest authentication. However I
can not make it works even in the simplest case. I
have a basic tomcat 5 installation with one of my web
application. I'd like to use digest authentication(I
do not send password to server in clear text).
The configuration is like this
security-constraint
web-resource-collection
  web-resource-nameThe Entire Web
Application/web-resource-name
  url-pattern/*/url-pattern
/web-resource-collection
auth-constraint
  role-nametomcat/role-name

  login-config
auth-methodDIGEST/auth-method
realm-nameTomcat Supported Realm/realm-name
  /login-config

  security-role
description
  An example role defined in
\conf/tomcat-users.xml\
/description
role-nametomcat/role-name
  /security-role

However, it does not work. I always get 403 (access is
denied error). If I use BASIC authentication,
everything works fine. I searched the mail list. It
seemed other people also has this problem. However
there is no any solution posted for it.
Have anyone get digest authentication works? If anyone
does, what extra step/caution should I takes?

Thanks

Subject: Embedding ${} syntax in jsp pages

 Hello,

 I see some of the examples shipped with 5.0.25 tomcat contains ${}
embedded
 jsp commands, as below:

   tr
 td\${1}/td
 td${1}/td
   /tr
   tr

 td${1 + 2}/td
   /tr
   tr
 td\${1.2 + 2.3}/td
 td${1.2 + 2.3}/td
   /tr

However, as I create a new tomcat application directory (Es. /myexamples)
and try to use the same jsp syntax I only get symple html output, without
 ${} command interpretation.

Does someone know the reason? Is it some directive missing in web.xml
file?

 Thanks and best regards

Re: Embedding ${} syntax in jsp pages

2004-07-23 Thread Thilo Krawietz
Hi Ess,
in order to enable interpretation JSP 2.0 EL expressions, you need to
switch your webapp to JSP 2.0. This is done in web.xml by replacing the
starting

web-app
tag by this syntax:
web-app xmlns=http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee;
xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance;
xsi:schemaLocation=http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee
http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/web-app_2_4.xsd;
version=2.4
After this, restart tomcat, then your web app should be recognized as
JSP 2.0 and the command interpretation should work!

Thilo

RE: Recommended DBCP configuration parameters

2004-07-23 Thread Jan Behrens
IMHO this depends on quite a lot of thinks. Type of rdbms you use,
complexity of your usual query and so forth. I would start with the
following question though: How many queries a minute does a typical user
trigger when s/he is using your app? Taking it from there, you can make some
(hopefully good) guesses.

Lets say you have 1 query a minute per user and expect a maximum of 7000
users at any given time. It would be devils work, if all of them trigger at
exactly the same time so I would assume for now that they all log on within
one minute. 7000 users divided by 60 secs would be approx. 117 concurrent
(in terms of db-access) users at high time. I would therefore start with a
maxActive of 150, set maxIdle to a much lower value (around 40) because you
have such a hight fluctuation in user-numbers...

But as has been suggested before, it basically is a try and error process ;)

 Hi,

Can anyone tell me where I can find
recommendations/guidelines for choosing values for the DBCP
parameters -- such as maxActive, maxIdle, maxWait, etc. -- in
 the ResourceParams element of server.xml?

For example, I am about to launch a system that has a user
base of approx 7000 users, which I expect will be thrashed
hard at launch time and then settle down to an average of 10
to 100 users at any given time. What values should I specify
 for my database pooling parameters?

 Thanks,

 Frank.

One question is not related to server.xml.
If I want different manager/virtualhost to have different
users/passwords, I need to deploy it directly to it's own
 virtualhost's
webapps? (and changing the role-name tag in web.xml)

RE: jndi.properties tomcat 5.0

2004-07-23 Thread Shapira, Yoav
Hi,
You're not missing anything. Since I'm short on time for explanations
today, I'll just say that jndi.properties is basically nice for
examples/tutorials and simple applications, but the proper paradigm for
an application server is the explicit context properties population that
you're doing.

Hi Folks,

I need to integrate my jboss server and tomcat 5.0
web server(standalone) using JNDI.

I need explicitly mention JNDI properties in the
web server code for it to work.

   p.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,
org.jnp.interfaces.NamingContextFactory);
   p.put(Context.URL_PKG_PREFIXES,
jboss.naming:org.jnp.interfaces);
   p.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, 192.168.1.84:1099);

Defining the parameters in the jndi.properties does
not work.

I looked up the old posts and tried this solution
too..

props.load(
servlet.getServletContext().getResourceAsStream(

/WEB-INF/classes/jndi.properties ) );

  but no success.

  Am i missing something here.

TIA

Hi thanks,
A reboot sorted it. Netstat is not a reliable means to check what
ports are being used by which app then?

Regards

Paul.

You definitively have a process using 8080 :
either a tomcat process, still running, or another program (oracle,...)
Check all your current process, or simply reboot.

Objet : TC 5.0.27 startup problem

Hi,
A seemingly simple one, but not for I! I am trying to setup the
above version of TC on Win XP. My JAVA_HOME is set as an environment
variable, and in the top of my startup.bat I am setting CATALINA_HOME:

rem $Id: startup.bat,v 1.6 2004/05/27 18:25:11 yoavs Exp $
rem

---
set CATALINA_HOME=C:\dev\jakarta-tomcat-5.0.27
rem Guess CATALINA_HOME if not defined
set CURRENT_DIR=%cd%

When running this file from the command prompt I get:

23/07/2004 16:14:25 org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11Protocol init
SEVERE: Error initializing endpoint
java.net.BindException: Address already in use: JVM_Bind:8080

org.apache.tomcat.util.net.PoolTcpEndpoint.initEndpoint(PoolTcpEndpoint.
j
at
org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11Protocol.init(Http11Protocol.java:137)

I immediately looked at what was using port 8080 (nothing to my
knowledge) and this was confirmed. I ran netstat which confirmed that
port 8080 was not in use.
TC appears to have started, but http://localhost:8080 (with
numerous stacktraces (above)) is showing a 404. Am I illegally setting
CATALINA_HOME?

Thanks

Paul.

RE: Newbie Question

2004-07-23 Thread Dave Bender
Can you provide some more detail? When you say you're running two servers accessing
an Access database, do you mean two different machines or just different server
instances on the same machine?

If you're trying to access Access from a different machine, you may have to use a
different jdbc driver. I don't think the Sun jdbc:odbc driver can reach a data source
running on a different machine.

Hello!

This is a newbie question... =)

I have two servers running accessing single MS Access database

I used jdbc:odbc:CES_DS in server.xml

CES_DS is the data source name I used for both servers... pointing
to MS Access DB...

However this error occurs...

org.apache.commons.dbcp.DbcpException: java.sql.SQLException:
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] '(unknown)' is not a valid
path. Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you
are connected to the server on which the file resides.

How to access a single database using two servers using DSN
connection...?

Please Help!

Thanks a lot!

Beyond bassic form authentication?

2004-07-23 Thread Anastasios Angelidis
So I setup my web app to use Form Authentication with a User Realm in my
MySQL DB. It all works fine. I type the protected resources URL into the
browser, I get redirected to the login page, I login and behold it works! ;)

Now how would I give access to a secure resource from an unsecure
resource. For instance...

My webapp has a front page with recent news, welcome message etc...
Standard home page stuff...
Obviously I can put a sign-in link that will try to access the protected
resource, which will then redirect to the login page...
But is there a way to put a login form on the home page directly and
post that form for authentication and from there give access to the
protected resource?

Thanks

Did you try scabbing code from the login.jsp? You may want to use that and the
user will gain access to the areas allowed with their group or role.

We have looked extensively at the access log and a tomcat's logs but have not
been able to to find any related activity.

Oddly, in the SSL.log the following line appears seemingly randomly
(not obviously related to the error pop-ups):

  mod_jk: Error flushing

We don't know if this is related or not. It appears just like that, no
timestamp or anything. We are not using mod_jk, it is not included.

We've serached in Google, Google groups, and the bug database extensively but
have found similar but not identical complaints, none of which are (publicly)
resolved anyway.

On a test server we reduced the occurence of the error by fiddling with
configuration files. It seems to have eliminated the error, but does not
get much traffic so it may just have been reduced. We have duplicated the
settings on the production server, and we did manage to seemingly reduce
the occurence of the error but did not eliminate it. It still pops up
hundreds of times a day.

I'm assuming that we have some kind of misconfiguration, but after weeks of
searching the web and reading the (rather spare) documentation, we haven't
been able to determine what the problem is. Our relevant config files are
attached below.

Does anyone have any pointers for us? Let me if I've left out some important
config info.

Thanks,
Noah

Subject: Beyond bassic form authentication?
So I setup my web app to use Form Authentication with a User Realm in my
MySQL DB. It all works fine. I type the protected resources URL into the
browser, I get redirected to the login page, I login and behold it works! ;)
Now how would I give access to a secure resource from an unsecure
resource. For instance...
My webapp has a front page with recent news, welcome message etc...
Standard home page stuff...
Obviously I can put a sign-in link that will try to access the protected
resource, which will then redirect to the login page...
But is there a way to put a login form on the home page directly and
post that form for authentication and from there give access to the
protected resource?
Thanks

RE: Win2kSP4, Apache-2.0.49 + Tomcat-5.0.27 + mod_jk2-2.0.43 - Memory Reference Error

2004-07-23 Thread Tonte Pouncil
You may want to try increasing the jvm memory heap for Apache and/or Tomcat. I have
experienced out of memory error with Tomcat before. I fixed the issue by increasing
the jvm memory heap. I forget the command that I used and I am no longer working at
the company I configured Tomcat to use more memory, but if you do a search on google
you should be able to find some kind of documentation.

I have the same set up you have, but I have been unable to get Apache to forward jsp
request to Tomcat. Can you provide me with a step by step instructions as to what you
did?

Thanks!

OS: Windows 2000, Service Pack 4
Apache ver: 2.0.49
Tomcat ver: 5.0.27
mod_jk2 ver: 2.0.43

We have a server set up to forward requests through Apache to Tomcat using
mod_jk2. The setup works, except that periodically it will throw an error as
follows on the server:

Application popup: Apache.exe - Application Error : The instruction at
0x6eec7826 referenced memory at 0x. The memory could not
  be read.

On the user end, the web app is not interrupted when this happens.
In the mod_jk2 error log, the following lines appear when this error does:

  [Wed Jul 21 10:07:21 2004] (error ) [jk_worker_ajp13.c (546)]
ajp13.service() ajpGetReply recoverable error 3
  [Wed Jul 21 10:07:21 2004] (error ) [jk_worker_ajp13.c (546)]
ajp13.service() ajpGetReply recoverable error 3
  [Wed Jul 21 10:07:21 2004] (error ) [jk_worker_ajp13.c (648)]
ajp13.service() Error  forwarding ajp13:localhost:8009 1 0
  [Wed Jul 21 10:07:21 2004] (error ) [mod_jk2.c (752)]
mod_jk2.handler() Error connecting to tomcat 3, status 200

Thanks,
Noah

You may want to try increasing the jvm memory heap for Apache and/or Tomcat. I have
experienced out of memory error with Tomcat before. I fixed the issue by increasing
the jvm memory heap. I forget the command that I used and I am no longer working at
the company I configured Tomcat to use more memory, but if you do a search on google
you should be able to find some kind of documentation.

I have the same set up you have, but I have been unable to get Apache to forward jsp
request to Tomcat. Can you provide me with a step by step instructions as to what you
did?

Thanks!

Errors using admin tool

2004-07-23 Thread Matt Bathje
Hi all.

I am trying to get the Tomcat 5.0.25 administration tool working, and am
having some issue. If I try to add a host I get:

HTTP Status 500 - Error invoking operation createStandardHost

and in the catalina.out:
Jul 23, 2004 10:07:22 AM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardHost start

BUT, the host says it is created.

Now, if I try to add a context to that host (or any other host) I get the
error:

Any idea what is going on? As far as I can tell the tomcat user has
permission to access the conf directory (and it's subdirectories...) so I'm
pretty sure it is not a permissions issue...but I'm kind of lost here.

RE: Need help with Log4j and Tomcat5

2004-07-23 Thread Bill Harrelson
I have multiple applications, say app1 and app2. I want separate
logging for each application. log4j creates a static repository
associated with each classloader. They suggest having separate
jars in each appx/WEB-INF/lib directory so that log4j's static classes
create separate repositories because each application uses a
separate classloader.

This works great. However, Eclipse doesn't seem to create
separate classloaders, or something, as only one of my loggers
works, and then only if I explicitly put /lib/log4j.jar in the classpath.
There was a thread about this on a WebSphere list that said that
one had to change WS's classloader default to Parent-last but I
don't know whether this applies to Eclipse.

I'm hoping someone on this list has some experience with multiple
applications in Tomcat, log4j and Eclipse. I've been wrestling with
this for a while and can't find anyone that has been able to help.

TIA

Bill

RE: Need help with Log4j and Tomcat5

2004-07-23 Thread Shapira, Yoav

Hi,
Eclipse has a unified flat classloader at runtime. That means one
log4j.jar. Although Eclipse offers some nice versioning and reloading
features in this classloader, those don't help in your scenario. Try
the eclipse user mailing lists or forums.

Linux / Apache / Tomcat conf troubles

2004-07-23 Thread Julien Oix
Hi everyone,

I find 2 problems on my Linux/Apache/Tomcat platform :

*** First, I can't manage to redirect a 500 error code page to a customized
error page, even I can't see any trouble in my conf's files.

# config
Linux RedHat 7.1
Apache 1.3.27 (rpm)
Tomcat 4.1.18 (rpm)
mod_jk 1.2.2 (rpm)

#apache myVH.conf
ErrorDocument 500 /jsp/500.jsp

#tomcat myapps/WEB-INF/web.xml
error-page
error-code500/error-code
location/jsp/500.jsp/location
/error-page

apache gets a 500 error code
# myapps_access_log
193.52.112.54 - - [05/Jul/2004:15:52:49 +0200] GET /Login.do HTTP/1.1 500
3990

but the browser prints the default tomcat error page and not my customized
500.jsp ...

PS : there's no compilation problem in my 500.jsp, it could have been the
reason why tomcat can't print it and redirects to it's own 500 error page

*** Second, I have a java tomcat process recycling problem.

I thought that even there are cycles in a java code, the following line in
the tomcat4.conf was there to kill properly these non recycling processes :

# Time to wait in seconds, before killing process
SHUTDOWN_WAIT=30

But they stay with the running status and eat all the free CPU of my
machine (between 90 and 100 % of cpu until the processes come in).

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi,

I am trying to get application to authenticate so that the credentials
are carried into all subsequent request, what I have a persistence
realm that holds all the user/pasword and other info, I have a custom

.. these other appserver have a API that allows me to login and
authenticate the user, I want to do the same thing with tomcat 4.x,
5.x without using the web.xml security constraints, does anyone know a
way that I can authenticate a user, I will be using the DataSource
Realm that will be mapped to my persistence store. I have tried to use
ServerFactory to try and get the services and the realm but haven't
any luck with this.

I created a folder in the htdocs directory called WEB-INF which has an
web.xml file that has inside of it the following code:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=ISO-8859-1?

   PUBLIC -//Sun Microsystems, Inc.//DTD Web Application 2.3//EN

web-app

And I am still getting the prompt to download the file.

Phil,
Does your mod_jk.conf have an entry like this in it:
JKMount /
JKMount /*
?!

Tomcat 5.0.25 default page

2004-07-23 Thread Reis, Tom
Is there a way to change the default page that comes up when you type in the server
url to come up with a JSP application's welcome page instead on the Tomcat welcome
page or in there a redirection parameter in Tomcat. I have a server that is only
running the one application and would like for it to come up when typing in the server
url. Thanks.

I am not sure about this, but your problem seems to be confirming this. I
think the JSPs will not be compiled unless they are part of a web
application, i.e. you are being asked to save it because it isn't a format
your browser recognizes (its not a webpage). In the folder of your
test.jsp, you have to create a WEB-INF folder and it has to contain a valid
web.xml file (which can probably be empty aside from the wep-app/web-app
tags).

In my experience, this is not the case. I've deployed purely JSP driven
web-applications, without a WEB-INF directory, or web.xml - until I
needed a feature in web.xml (filter, servlet, etc.)

Respectfully,
Brice Ruth
