let me see if i understand your question? you wan to type
http://123.45.67.89
in a webbrowser and see your apache server dishing out content?

well, if that was the quesion you should set the port on yout apache config
file to serve using port 80 not 8080.
basically when you type http:// it tells your browers to go to
123.45.67.89:80
as that is the default port for "web" services. there is no such thing as
serving on 123.45.67.89. any tcp/ip comm happens on a port on an ip
address.
or i am confused as well?

sai.

Hmm my solution to my problem is to get all the information i need first and
pass it to the client where he loads in the applet. Too bad applets aren't
server side.

Re: different clients using the same instance of a bean

I copied some code I picked up from a website about application and session
scope. Can someone explain how setAttribute and getAttribute works? what
do the actual parameters do? also when i use jsp useBean, i usually have a
name, which is the name of my instance. Where in servlet code does it use
that name?

mike

ps pls look at code below

The servlet equivalent of the above useBean action is:

foo.Counter counter =
(foo.Counter)getServletContext().getAttribute("counter");
if (counter == null) {
 counter = new foo.Counter();
 getServletContext().setAttribute("counter", counter);
}

--

The servlet equivalent of the above useBean action is:

HttpSession session = request.getSession(true);
foo.Counter counter = (foo.Counter)session.getValue("counter");
if (counter == null) {
 counter = new foo.Counter();
 session.putValue("counter", counter);
}

different clients using the same instance of a bean

2003-03-25 Thread Michael Ni
How do I have groups of different clients from different browsers use the
same instance of a bean. I'm not talking about application scope.
Application scope is everyone using the same instance of a bean. I'm
talking about bob and joe using one instance of bean A and ken and barbie
using another instance of bean B while all clients are using different
computers.

Someone suggested servletcontext to me but I think that refers to
application scope. I was looking into session id but its depreciated in the
new java formats. I dont understand how setAttribute and getAttribute
works. is anyone knowledgable in this subject and can direct me in the
right direction?

Hi,

Put your bean into servlet context when it's instanciated with the first
client. Then get it out of ServletContext when you want the other client to
use it.

Hope it helps

If a bean is instanced when a person logins in, can he detect if other

The session bean doesn't actually expire when the browser window is
closed. It times out at some point in the future when it hasn't been
accessed for some number of minutes that you can configure.
Theoretically you could manipulate session beans using Listeners to gain
access to the beans after the client closes his browser window.
Application scope objects don't expire except when the application
terminates. You can manipulate them using removeAttribute calls, etc.

for usebean, i know the bean expires for scope session when the browser is
closed. but for scope application, when does the bean expire? does it keep
running even after the person who called the bean exits his browser? if so,
how can the bean terminate itself in an application scope.

is there any alternatives to auto refresh

2003-03-16 Thread Michael Ni
hi,

im trying to implement this online game. currently my only solution to this
is having the browser auto refresh the database through my javabeans. what
are my alternatives? i only want to keep refreshing a bits of information,
not the whole jsp page. must i research into java applets?

also, is there anyway a user or "player" can read information off other
users? meaning lets say there is someone named bob in arizona and someone
named joe in california. Both are requesting from my server making
instances of beans. is there anyway they can detect the beans that the
other person has made an instance of?

javabean constructors

2003-03-15 Thread Michael Ni
can someone explain to me how contructors work with java beans in a jsp
page? heres my question, in the following bean foo1 which does not have a
constructor, if i usebean and then getA, i can get the value of 3

class foo1 {
 int a = 3;
 int b = 4;
 //the rest of the get and set methods
 getA() {
   return a;
 }
}
but
in foo2 if i usebean and then getA, the constructor is not setting the
values of a and b to the right value. a and b are left as null. How in a
jsp page do i active the constructor. I always assumed when you usebean it
activates the constructor.

class foo2 {
 int a;
 int b;
 foo2() {
   a = 3; b = 4;
 }
 //the rest of the get and set methods
 getA() {
   return a;
 }
}

What package did you put the class in? If the answer is none, that is
why it does not work. Put it in a package and try again.
As far as reloading, read this:

Re: when are the java files compiled?

2003-03-06 Thread Michael Ni
thanks, yeah i forgot to compile my java file...

does anyone have a good example using a javabean to establish connection to
a datebase. im trying to figure out the best way to reuse code. i can try
one of the following methods:

1: i dont use javabeans and put all my connetion and queries inside the jsp
pages. So if i query the database three times in one jsp page, i have 3
duplications.

2: is what im trying to do is make a general java bean that makes connection
and puts the recordset into a hash table.

Does anyone have examples of the second example?

You need to compile it manually. If you are making it as some sort of
package make sure it falls within the proper path
If it is a jar file, you can put it in lib directory.

This is how mine is done. You will then need to restart your tomcat and it
shoudl work

Looks as if your running on windows.
If you are not running as a service you could always CTRL-C the window
tomcat is running on. or kill the java process via the task manager. At
this point i see that as your only option.

Well, you should try search example online i.e. through google. EJB is a
standard and should work with any DBMS (usually ;) ). Once you find an
example and it should work on your choice of DBMS.

Hi does anyone have examples of EJBs that connect to SQL Server 2000? I
have different queries that i want to run but i want to make my connection
and queries in a EJB so i dont have to retype it in my JSP pages every time
i need it. Also does anyone have examples of JSP pages calling EJBs?

Re: Tomcat and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 JDBC Driver issue

2003-02-24 Thread Michael Ni
Exact problem is tomcat can't read from the CLASSPATH and needs the actual
files inside the web-inf folder. So basically to get a connection you need
to
1 install the sdk
2 install tomcat
3 get all the environmental variables correct
4 install the driver
5 (this is my problem) place a copy of the driver inside the web-inf folder

finally you can have your jsp pages find the driver and then query the
database.

Ok, good to hear you got it to work but I'm curious, what was exact cause
of the problem ?

One reason to use WEB-INF\lib is if you plan on distributing your app or
deploying it to a different system, it's easier to move \webapps\\*
than to worry about lots of little jars in common...

My goal is to use JSP to query from my Microsoft SQL Server 2000.

I have successfully created my environments and installed the drivers for
the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 JDBC.
However when i run my script i get the following error

Driver not found:java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:
com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDrivercom.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQL
ServerDriver
exception: java.sql.SQLException: No suitable driverNo suitable driver
you can see for yourself at the following url

http://128.91.107.144:8080/test/home.jsp

I attached my home.jsp page. Does tomcat need to have the microsoft
drivers
physically in the folder or subfolders of c:\Tomcat 4.1? All i did was
create the CLASSPATH which assigned CLASSPATH to the 3 jar driver files.
I've been stuck on this issue for 3 days. Can anyone help me?
