Re: php and apache tomcat

2005-03-20 Thread Pablo E. Siciliano
I haven't tried this, but I suppose you can also compile php as CGI and use
it via CGI servlet. And you can configure apache + tomcat using mod_jk, and
serve php pages with the Apache server.

Well -- yes to the first, not exactly to the second.

The chances are good that the original poster is confused about the
difference between Apache httpd and Tomcat, but PHP 4 has an option
in the `configure` script to build a PHP servlet.

I've built it, run it, used it for lightweight PHP stuff. Works OK,
more or less, but any significant glitch takes the whole JVM down.
In other words, not suitable for serious production use, but fine
for running one calendar app, or some such trivia :-)

The servlet build function seems to be missing in PHP5, though.

Hi all,

I have a problem in my production environment and I cann't reproduce this in
develop one.

I'm using Tomcat 5.0.27, IIS 6 and Isapi_redirect 1.0.

When I ask on jsp or servlet I get blank page. I review the looger but I don't
see any error. Only in the IIS connector I can see entries like:

Any help will be appreciate.

2004-12-07 Thread Pablo Carretero
Thanks Yoav,

Maybe, I don't explain very well my case. For example, If I active the debug
in the database pool connection, can I see the active connection, free
connection, the queries, etc...

Other example, I'm configuring a cluster in memory, I would like activate
the debug option, in order to know if the machines of the cluster is working
good or not.

I mean, I looking for this documentation, but I find nothing about that. Do
you know if are there any documentation about this issues??

Thank a lot.

I change the debug and verbosity values, and the log is always the
same.

Different Tomcat versions have different ways to configure logging.
Make sure you're looking at the documentation for your Tomcat version.

The verbosity attribute is mostly for Tomcat 3.x.

The debug attribute, if allowed (the docs will list it if it's allowed),
goes from 0 (the default, no logging) to 99 (the highest, max logging).
But it's mostly used in Tomcat 4.x, and less in 5.x.

The more recent versions of Tomcat use Commons-Logging increasingly. To
configure their logging, you need to pick an implementation (e.g. log4j
or JDK 1.4 logging) and configure Tomcat to use that logging
implementation with your chosen logging levels. This is explained in
the FAQ and documentation (the latter only for Tomcat 5.5).

For Tomcat 5.5, there's no Logger, and no debug attributes, at all.
It's all Commons-Logging.

There are two ways to determine what logging output you will see if you
enable debug-level logging for a given Tomcat component. One way to is
try it. The other way is to look at the source code, which of course is
freely available for you to download and examine.

If you look at the source, you will see that some components do more
logging than others. So even setting debug-level logging for them might
not yield much information.

As to the specific question above about database pooling: because that's
not implemented by Tomcat, but by a pluggable implementation (DBCP by
default), it's up to the implementation's logging. Again, you can try
it, or you can consult the DBCP source code. Alternatively you can plug
in your own connection pooling implementation.

I mean, I looking for this documentation, but I find nothing about
that. Do
you know if are there any documentation about this issues??

What are you asking is generic. Documentation for Tomcat's own logging
is covered under the Logger configuration reference and, for Tomcat 5.5,
in the logging-howto section of the docs. There is also a FAQ entry
showing how to configure Tomcat 5.0.x with log4j. For parts of the code
that are not Tomcat's own, e.g. DBCP, you need to consult that
component's documentation.

Filter tricks in tomcat

2004-11-09 Thread Pablo Carretero
Hi,

I’m working with Tomcat 5 from 3 months ago. I understand the filter
architecture, but I cannot capture the response filter for my JSP and
servelt. Tomcat 5 is Servlet 2.4, so I thing it can filter either request or
response.

What I can do, is capture the entire request and its response, to have a
good mechanism of statistics in my web application.

So, can you help in order to know how can I catch the response in a filter??

Thanks in advanced,

And best regards.

mod_rewrite mod_proxy issues with apache and tomcat

2004-10-29 Thread Pablo
To anyone who can help,
I currently am looking into alternative to mod_jk2 for apache and
tomcat . Simply because of latency issues. One of the avenues that I am
attempting is using mod_proxy and mod_rewrite. I have followed the
directions from this url

http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.0-doc/balancer-howto.html
the only difference between these directions and my implementation is
that I have this

Location /jsp-examples
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_COOKIE}
(^|;\s*)JSESSIONID=\w*\.(\w+)($|;)
RewriteRule (.*)
			http://${SERVERS:%2|${SERVERS:ALL}}%{REQUEST_URI} [P,L]
RewriteRule ^.*;jsessionid=\w*\.(\w+)($|;)
	http://${SERVERS:$1|${SERVERS:ALL}}%{REQUEST_URI} [P,L]
RewriteRule (.*)
http://${SERVERS:ALL}%{REQUEST_URI}; [P,L]
/Location

instead of what the apache how to implements
Location /webapp
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_COOKIE}
(^|;\s*)jsessionid=\w*\.(\w+)($|;)
RewriteRule (.*)
			http://${SERVERS:%2}%{REQUEST_URI}; [P,L]
RewriteRule ^.*;jsessionid=\w*\.(\w+)($|;)
	http://${SERVERS:$1}%{REQUEST_URI}; [P,L]
RewriteRule (.*)
			http://${SERVERS:ALL}%{REQUEST_URI}; [P,L]
/Location

That was just a little tip that I got from a website.
I can get to the urls just fine. For instance if I go to one off my
apps (notice ssl)

https://sdp-webprod.phila.k12.pa.us/masterlogin/
I get there with no problem . Should I take away the trailing slash
and hit enter I end up with the following in my url string

http://170.235.31.19:8080/masterlogin/
Any suggestions?

PLEASE HELP : time outs with sticky session and file store

2004-10-25 Thread pablo
Hi folks,
I am currently running apache 2.0.52 , mod_jk2, solaris 8 tomcat
5.0.28 on my servers . I have two apache serves behind an alteon that
service my webapps on 4 tomcat servers. I have sticky sessions with a
file store set up on my boxes. My filestore is via nfs. All my hosts
are on the same subnet. They are mulithomed hosts because I need a back
interface for the webapps to talk to the db. But my default routes are
all set the same . I have one apache server that hits two tomcat
servers and then another apache sever that has two other tomcat
servers. Once I start that apache servers everything is fine , for a
few hours . After a few hours the tomcat servers start to time out. I
can get to the apache index page but as soon as I ask the apache server
to make a request to a webapp on the tomcat servers is just sits there
and times out. Sometimes the webapp does pop up but very slowly. I
have examined the routing tables , I have done traceroutes I have pin
pointed my problem down to the application layer. So I must be doing
something wrong in my configuration. I checked over my configuration a
hundred times and I did it exactly the way the book told me to
professional apache tomcat 5 . This all worked on my testing
environment , but it is not working now. I have included a very small
tar file that has my config files . If any of you can give me an
example of a working config or tell me what I am doing wrong I would
greatly appreciate it .

I did more test about the problem.

I have one JSP(jspa) and (jspb) from jsp I do an include of jspb and

If I invoke to http:///../jspa.jsp it doesn't work, but If I invoke
directly to http://..//jspb.jsp It works ok.

Without seeing the rest of your code, I'll guess that the problem is
that you've started the relative link with a /.

Try without it. If you have to back up a directory use
 ../jknopkn/prueba.jsp.

 What, specifically, doesn't work?
Did this same code work in a previous version of Tomcat 5.0.x?

etc, etc. We're all pretty sharp here, but I don't think any of us are

sticky sessions with a persistent session manager and a shared file store

2004-09-23 Thread Pablo
Hi Folks,
I am a little stumped so I decided to swallow my pride and ask the
collective. I am trying to configure tomcat 5.0.25 to have sticky
sessions with a persistent session manager and a shared file store. I
want to accomplish this using nfs. I set up the tomcat servers , the
nfs mounts and I did the following

1) add distributable/ to the applications web.xml
2) server xml added the following right before the end of the Host
element . Right above /Host

!-- Following added by Pablo --
Context docBase=jsp-examples path=/jsp-examples
Manager
className=org.apache.catalina.session.PersistentManager
Store
classname=org.apache.catalina.session.FileStore
 directory=/usr/local/nfs /
/Manager
/Context
!-- end Of entry made by Pablo --

/Host
These are the instructions that were in my Professional Apache Tomcat
5 book. I tried to start up tomcat and it would not budge. Output of
the catalina.out at the bottom of this email.

I also tried the directions from
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.0-doc/cluster-howto.html
in conjunction to the information in my tomcat 5 book. No dice.
I looked in the web and the only thing that I was able to find was the
following

http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2004/03/31/clustering.html?page=2
notice the section that states
Saving the session state to a shared file system
(org.apache.catalina.session.FileStore, part of
catalina-optional.jar).
this bullet is under Session Replication in Tomcat.

So I went to my /usr/local/tomcat/common/lib directory and I was unable
to find that jar file. I am a little frustrated because there is such
a lack of documentation on the web regarding this issue on tomcat 5.
Is there any of you with experience on this topic that may be able to
point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Pablo

JSP Implicit import

2004-09-22 Thread Pablo Carretero Sánchez
Hi,

do know if can I import java packages in a implicit way in a JSP??

I means, I'm working with a Bea Weblogic application, and I want run this app
in Tomcat. There are several jsp in Bea using Vector without the import
java.utils.Vector. This jsp works fine in Bea but not in Tomcat. Do you know
why??

Best regards.

Sometimes there are old sw, in old servers, that was not upgraded for
some (stupid?) reason.

Some examples:
- if the client does not pay for the upgrade
- if there are a old compiled webapp that cannot be replaced

that question has haunted me from the beginning of joining this

Because we're on HP-UX and they have not yet officially blessed Tomcat 5.
That, and Tomcat 4 works perfectly well, I haven't found sufficient
motivation to test everything on TC5 and start developing with the new
features yet.

Sometimes one dont need to be faster.
I'm talking about a old legacy app (not critical - intranet), running
very well for a couple of years in the same old server.

That's right. But, in real life, sometimes we have not choice :D
Good providers may go away too, or even turn in BAD providers...
In open source apps thats is not a big problem... But with closed

BTW, I always recommend stay upgraded, if that can be done ;)

Yes, it should work. What's the relevant code? I'd suspect you're
 calling this from a JSP?

Are you certain a session has even been setup when this JSP is called?

Hello,
I have a web application that runs under jakarta-tomcat-5.0.19. The
root of
my application is: /opt/jakarta-tomcat-5.0.19/webapps/provision/ I can
access the application through:
http://135.88.100.251:8080/provision/web/login.jsp
Now, I don't want the user to be able to navigate through my
application.
For instance, if he enters: http://135.88.100.251:8080/provision/web/
I
don't want him to see the directories (or even the files) in it.
I think they must be a Context parameter that can do it but I don't
know
how.
Could you help?
Thanks
Elisabeth

load balancing with jk2

2004-03-30 Thread pablo
Hello ,
I am currently running tomcat 5.0.19 , apache 2.0.49 on a redhat 9
box. I have been succesful in geting mod_jk to work for a single
instance of tomcat but as soon as I add a second instance in my
workers2.properties I get a very interesting problem. I can get to both
tomcat instance but I am unable to maintain a session . The way I know
this is because I go to the jsp-examples and I test out the Carts app.
Everytime I add a video to the shopping cart only one item appears
instead of a second item added. I have tried to keep my config as
vanilla a possible to keep it simple. The only thing that I have done
to my server.xml is what is described in the session replication how
to from the tomcat website:

http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.0-doc/cluster-howto.html

If you check out that web page you will see a link for load balancing .
Once you click on it you see that if you want to do
load balancing with mod_jk2 then it refers you to the JK Documentation
instead of providing a link. I have been unable to find any load
balancing documentation in here :

http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc/jk2/index.html

maybe I am just missing something. I noticed that in my server.xml
there is a portion that is commented out and is specific to JK2 load
balancing .

!-- You should set jvmRoute to support load-balancing via JK/JK2 ie :

Make sure that for each instance of Tomcat, there is a unique jvmRoute
attribute in the Engine element of each instance's server.xml. The
jvmRoute corresponds to the tomcatId setting in your
workers2.properties file (see below). The jvmRoute needs to be unique
for each instance. Also, if you're just uncommenting the above in
your server.xml, you'll need to comment out the other Engine section
that doesn't have the jvmRoute attribute. Maybe that's why Tomcat
won't start.

Everytime I make an attempt to uncomment this tomcat will not start.
Regardless this is what my workers2.properties looks like. #INSTANCE 1
#Socket Channel, explicity set port and host
[channel.socket:localhost:8009]
info=Ajp13 forwarding over socket
debug=0
tomcatId=localhost:8009
   ^^
This should be the jvmRoute setting you specified in this instance's
server.xml. The other instance below should have a unique tomcatId as
well.

In other words, you've got at least two separate server.xml files, one
for each instance of Tomcat on localhost. For instance 1, edit the
Engine section and add jvmRoute=jvm1. For instance 2, edit the
Engine section and add jvmRoutejvm2. Then, in your
workers2.properties file, change the tomcatId=jvm1 and tomcatId=jvm2
in each instance's section.

Hope that's clear.

Two database connectors for tomcat + cocoon

2004-03-16 Thread Pablo E. Siciliano
Hi!!

I'm using tomcat 4.1 under windows 98, with cocoon 2.0.1 , and jvm 1.4.2. I
tried to add connection pool for MS SQL 2000 server. I'm using the
connection driver provided by Microsoft in
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9f1874b6-f8e1-4bd6-
947c-0fc5bf05bf71DisplayLang=en.

I've added that connector to cocoon.xconf, and the driver to web.xml, and It
really stablish the pool (I can see it into SQL Server processes), but I
can't compile anything. I only obtain an OutOffMemoryError from console. I
tried even with a pool with only one connection.

Please, help me.

Jsvc Problem from tomcat5

2004-01-13 Thread Pablo Garaitonandia
Hi Guys,

I have not been able to run jsvc on Solaris8 with the latest patches.
I followed the installation instructions from
http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/daemon/jsvc.html
and from the INSTALL.txt from source that came with tomcat5 binary. I
have all
the apropriate gnu tools installed and I am using the j2sdk1.4.2_2.
This is
what happens. Any Suggestions?

bash-2.05$ ./jsvc -help
Usage: jsvc [-options] class [args...]
Where options include:

-jvm JVM name
use a specific Java Virtual Machine. Available JVMs:
Segmentation Fault (core dumped)
bash-2.05$
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

running tomcat5 as a user other than root

2004-01-12 Thread pablo garaitonandia
Hi guys,
I am trying to run tomcat 5 as any user other than root on my sun box
so that I can configure mod_jk2 using unix sockets rather than channel
sockets.
 (referencehttp://www.cymulacrum.net/tomcat/tomcat_mod_jk2.html ).

I have tried doing many things in my init scripts like a su -c
tomcat $TOMCAT_HOME/bin/startup.sh but I have been unsuccessful. I
know it is probably something stupid or simple that I am just missing ,
but I am just not seeing it. If any of you know how to do this and
would like to share how , I would greatly appreciate it.

Does anybody know if this is possible?.
The only thing I could do was to disable or enable entirely the

Re: Tomcat cannot find subclass

2003-08-20 Thread Pablo Mayrgundter
One of the classes in that package, ServletSelectAnswerFormatter, generates
an HTML select. I get the options by invoking a method designed to be
 overridden in a subclass.

My current project has such a subclass,
 CountryServletSelectAnswerFormatter, which resides in
 WEB-INF/classes/com/stortek/ilm/userresponse for the correct context.

When the servlet runs, I get a ClassNotFoundException:

 Class not found:
 com.stortek.ilm.userresponse.CountrySelectServletAnswerFormat ter

Is this mistyped? Above, you have CountrySelectServlet... not found, but
you say it's actually called CountryServletSelect... (Servlet and Select
are swapped), so it's right that it not be found.

Re: [File Upload] How to Increase the Speed of File transfer ??

I want some suggestion about below factors:

1.Iam sending file to server as block wise of 1024
bytes and my servlet also writes file in remote
destination folder as a block wise of 1024 bytes. If I
increase the block size then is it increase the speed
 ?

Yeah.. test with higher block sizes.

 2. I have used DataOutputStream for writing on
outputstream and InputStream for reading,if I used
BufferWriter and BufferReader then is it increase the
 speed ?

Defnitely a good idea.

Question:
Must I have a context in server.xml AND a descriptor?
When I do have both I get this error message in the logfile:

Re: Change an include file requires re-compiling all JSP that include it (?)

2001-12-11 Thread Pablo Lillia

There are 2 ways to include a file:

%@ include file=relativeURL % for static files, parsing JSP elements.

and

jsp:include page={reletiveURL | %= expression % } flush=true{ / |
  [ jsp:param name=parameterName value={parameterValue | %=
expression%} / ]+
 /jsp:include }

You need the 2nd form. A simple example:

 jsp:include page=include.jsp flush=true /

(from JSP Syntax V1.1)

I come from an ASP background where we would frequently change include
files
and see the results immediately. However, in JSP, since JSP pages are
compiled into servlet classes, if I change an include file the JSP file
including it won't get re-compiled because the JSP hasn't changed, just
the
include file. Even if I restart Tomcat it still won't recompile the JSPs.
So for now every time I make a change to an include file I have to re-save
all of my JSPs so Tomcat forces a recompile. That's a big pain.

Can somebody help me out here? Is there a way to force re-compilation of
JSPs if the files they include ever change?

You must enclose de Connection Pool within a class with one object: the
 Pool.
The Pool must be a variable within this class and when you call a specific
method, if this variable is null, you create the pool, in the others cases
you ask for a connection from the pool.
The method you use must be proctected by sincronized clause, because this
variable may be accesed by multiple objects or threads.
 It's clear?.
I use this methodology and it works fine. Now you may use your connection
pool in what ever you like: jsp, servlets, etc.

  Hi:
You can put it in tomcat use

  System.getProperties().put(key,value);
  System.getProperties().getProperty(key);

  Here is my solution.
I create the connections in constructor ConnectionPool().
I new the ConnectionPool instance in where I need to use it.

  ConnectionPool dbPool = new ConnectionPool();
   Connection c = dbPool.getConnection();

Control the number of request's

Can anyone explain me (and to all people of the list) how control the number

with IE or NN push Reload several times, my server does one connection to
the DataBase in all the requests. Then, the Oracle 8i crash becouse the

Tomcat. I would like to respond only the last request, and cancel the
previous one.
Is it possible with Tomcat?

And another question, are there any way to call a method of a servlet

changes in jsp included file dont refreshed

Hi,

I need some help.

When I had changed a jsp file included in other file, the changes don't

PD2: Tomcat rocks!

Re: changes in jsp included file dont refreshed

Yes, the included file contains code.

This feature is in the tomcat's to-do's? Maybe usefull.

Thank you.

That is correct. When you '%@ include' a file it is included at translation

If you 'jsp:include' the file it will be included at request time so
changes will
be apparent immediately. You can't 'jsp:include' files containing code
though.

You will probably need to keep touching the master jsp file.

Try http://127.0.0.1:8080/index.html

Try add the

to your c:\windows\hosts file

Also, if you use a proxy, check
"don't use proxy server for local hosts" or similar.

Well, I won't guarantee it 100%, but it very well could be the
  problem.

Could anyone give me an address where I can
 find
information about the way that Tomcat class loader runs?

I don't have a specific source, but I believe there are
tutorials/articles about on the web -- do a search at
 www.google.com.
I'm pretty sure there was a JDC Tech Tips about classloaders
 (they're
all up on the JDC site), and other sites (e.g. javaworld) may have
stuff on it as well. You can also check the tomcat
 documentation/source.

How can I force to Tomcat Class loader to take my servlets?

Simply change your classpath so that the relevant directories
(.../WEB-INF/classes, and probably .../WEB-INF/lib as well) are
not
included. Do that, try again, and let us know whether it worked.

The problem is that the System class loader (the one that
loads
  your
CLASSPATH environment variable) is keeping a cache around of
the
class.
This is why Milt (correctly) told you to remove the
  WEB-INF/classes
from
your classpath if you want the auto-reloading to work as it is
supposed
  to*.
If the System class loader loads your class then its
impossible
  for
Tomcat
to load it, and if Tomcat doesn't load it in the first place,
 then
   it
  can't
   unload and reload it.

   * - Many people have problems with the way that auto-reloading
  works
in
Tomcat. A large number have problems like yours, and large
  numbers
also
complain that the auto-reloading doesn't work for non-servlet

2001-06-08 Thread Pablo Morillas

Hello Filip.

I didn't know that but, unfortunately the servlet is in the WEB-INF/classes
directory. The scheme is that I start tomcat and I get the correct result
but, if I change the servlet and compile it the output is the same until I
restart Tomcat. I've tried to remove the class file of the servlet that is
in the WEB-INF/classes but the page goes up like it would be in a cache. I
get the result even the class is removed. If I restart tomcat I get the
error page saying that request didn't be found.

I've readed several mail and I've sincronized the time between my box and
the server with net time /domain /set and I now have the same time, but
this isn't the solution.

Can anybody help me, becouse I use tomcat like a service in other coumputer
with IIS and I dn't want to have restart the server service when I change
anything in any servlet.

Thaks all.

as long as your servlet classes are under WEB-INF/classes and not
 WEB-INF/lib Tomcat will reload servlets.
and it always reloads JSP pages

Re: Automaticaly update the servlets

2001-06-08 Thread Pablo Morillas

Yes, it is in my classpath. But I don't believe that the classpath is the
problem becouse when I start Tomcat as a service it runs properly. If I
change a .jsp it reload properly.
I don't know what is happen but, when I delete the class file from the
WEB-INF/classes the servlet run properly (incredible). Then, after I restart
the server a error was reported. I compile it another in the WEB-INF/classes
without restart Tomcat and it runs ok.
I suppose that the servlet file is in any cache of Tomcat, but I can be
perfectly wrong. Uses Tomcat any type of GUID to run classes?

I don't know what's happen. Please, advice.

Is WEB-INF/classes in your classpath? Because it shouldn't be if you
 want reloading to work.

2001-06-07 Thread Pablo Lillia

Hi,

I found in Tomcat v3.1 (Win32) a problem: the file /conf/tomcat-apache.conf
has \ in paths, and it need / to work in apache (version 1.3.12 for win32).
I don't know if that is a well-known problem, because I don't found any
reference in doc's faq's.

Greetings

Sessions

2001-05-31 Thread Pablo Trujillo

Hello again,
Excuse me for the nuisances but I have problems with the sessions. Yesterday
Randy answered me that to discover on the sessions of the Tomcat I should
see the class org.Apache.tomcat.session.StandarManager. I have been able to
discover that class is in Webserver.jar.
Where I can get the code of that library?

Another topic. I can not receive any message of the list. Why will it be?
