Dynamic to static conversion
Hi, A friend of mine has asked me to help him build an "eBay store". So I need to build a bunch of static pages. I think that it is still a good idea to do so programmatically (the only way I know how to do it!) through jsp. Do you agree? How would I then convert pseudo-dynamic pages to static in an automated fashion? Or if you have any other ideas or experiences, please share! Many thanks in advance, Dola __ Do You Yahoo!? filesystem independent tomcat [OT ]
Hi, I am doing some exploratory work on tomcat and was wondering If anyone has felt the need for tomcat which can be loaded across the network and doesnt rely on the underlying filesystem in anyway including the temporary work directory, logging, catalina_home, catalina_base etc ? Is there any such version already out there? If not, then does it break any servlet/jsp specs ? Encoding probleme
Hello to you all, I have an axis client ( SOAP ) which sends a String als parameter in xml format ( ). this client connect to a webserver over https, the webserver directs the request with http to tomcat 4.0.6 on which my webserver is deployed. the probleme I am experiecing is as follow: from the webservice under tomcat I got the exception : invalid xml character dbc0 ( I have lookup under der unicode charset and this is an invalid surrogate for xml). the probleme is that this exception should be thrown from the axis client ( I know the client validate the string ). my asssumption is that may be tomcat is doing something wrong with my string before passing it to the axis servlet. I have read in the mailing list that the default for tomcat is ISO-8859-1. I tried to reproduce this exception by setting for the JVM this options -Djavax.servlet.request.encoding=Shift_JIS with no success.( although I am sending ISO-8859-1) Has anybody an idea, thanks for any help. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Under normal use very little appears in catalina.out. What exactly is filling up the file? I would suggest that it is application output or errors and that you need to sort that out. I would also suggest that you use a proper logging package like log4j which will allow you to have rotatable log files which are easier to manage. catalina.out is never written to by tomcat itself. Question to the OT: how are you deleting catalina.out? If you aren't shutting down tomcat first, you need to do that. Otherwise some OS's recreate the file to it's former size with empty space where log info used to be. Re: Question Title: Newbie Tomcat 4.0 install gives 500 "No Context configured" error @ HTTP localhost
Hi there, I do not have a webapps/ROOT directory. It's not in my install ZIP file either. Creating a blank new one doesn't seem to change anything. According to my services file (BTW, I misspoke when I said Win2000, it's WinXP) I have no used ports at all in my 8000 range, although I know Oracle uses a couple, so I suppose this list isn't complete; am not enough of an admin to know how to check which ports are being used. However, changing the 8080 in server.xml to something else had no result. I changed it back, have made no other modifications to that file. ugh. My professor was having problems getting Tomcat to run properly on the lab machines at school (for which I blame campus sysadmins, not Tomcat!), and then told us all, "I promise it'll work at home..." I should've gotten it in writing. m On 4/29/05, Anto Paul <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > The second error is with Tomcat manager application. Re: How to run tomcat without specifying a JDK location?
Hi, Thanks very much for replying. I don't think that just modifying JAVA_HOME to point to a JRE will work. The file "catalina.bat" internally calls "setclasspath.bat" which in turn checks for the presence of the following: * "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java.exe" * "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\javaw.exe" * "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\jdb.exe" * "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\javac.exe" Following are the lines of code that say so: if not exist "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java.exe" goto noJavaHome if not exist "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\javaw.exe" goto noJavaHome if not exist "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\jdb.exe" goto noJavaHome if not exist "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\javac.exe" goto noJavaHome goto okJavaHome :noJavaHome echo The JAVA_HOME environment variable is not defined correctly echo This environment variable is needed to run this program echo NB: JAVA_HOME should point to a JDK not a JRE goto exit I even checked in the latest version of the setclasspath.bat file obtained from: < http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs.cgi/jakarta-tomcat-catalina/catalina/src/bin/setclasspath.bat > But the same code is present. Tomcat lasted through the night after I shutdown Apache HTTP Server, so it looks like Apache was the culprit in the unexplained Tomcat shutdowns. Is there a simple way to run Apache and Tomcat on the same machine without integrating them, just deconflicting the IP ports on which they listen? I'm not ready at this point to run Tomcat "behind" Apache- I'd just like them to co-exist for the time being, if possible. Stack trace below shows what Tomcat was doing after an hour or so uptime. Mark Leone wrote: I found an entry in the catalina.out log that I believe represents the spontaneous shutdown of Tomcat that I'm experiencing. I've pasted the log text below. Does this indicate Apache HTTP Server and Tomcat are interfering with one another? They're both installed on the Mac, but I didn't do anything to integrate them other than deconflict the IP ports they listen on. I don't understand what socket connection was reset by the peer, unless it was a Tomcat to Apache connection, which also seems to be indicated by the packages appearing in the stack trace. I'm going to shut down apache and see if Tomcat makes it through the night. Actually that is't correct, we run JSP's that aren't pre-compiled (our application is servlet based but we have a few utility JSP's that we write/use for support) and still use just a JRE. I think from memory you just need to edit one of the .bat files either catalina.bat or setclasspath.bat if I remember correctly but I can't remember exactly what needed to be edited and I'm not in front of one of the servers right now. Re: Dynamic to static conversion
There is no reason I can think of to build static pages dynamically. I know what you are asying, but it makes little sense, I think. However, if you want to get the static equivalent of a dynamic page, all you have to do is to build a little application browser which gets the output of your pages and saves them. You can get the code for doing this pretty much from the COS message classes. Need your help to troubleshoot a Tomcat crash
Hello gurus, * SETUP This is Tomcat 4.1.26 on Win2K running with Tomcat Service Manager from http://web.bvu.edu/staff/david/tcservcfg/ JDK 1.4.1_03 with options "-Xms512 -Xmx1024 -Xss2048 -showversion -verbose:gc -Xloggc:c:\winnt\system32\PRTI-Report.log" Connector config: * PROBLEM We're facing a problem whereby when we stress test our web application, the Tomcat service brutally crashes. Our problem is that it has been impossible to identify what made Tomcat (or the JVM?) crash: nothing shows in the logs, no JVM crash report in $TOMCAT_HOME/bin nor C:/WINNT/system32. We don't know why but removing the JVM option "-server" has enabled the performance test to complete successfully. * QUESTIONS * can I force Tomcat to give details about why & when it crashes? Ideally, we'd need a stack trace... * is there a negative impact of running Windows as a service? * is anyone facing issues with JDK 1.4.1_03 running with the "-server" switch? * any recommendations for improving our setup? I myself might learn something > here! :) Does anyone reading this know a definitive answer? Conceptually, I guess someone could have changed the session to require serialization. Perhaps they did this to handle the new "cluster/failover" aware sessions. Tomcat has different session managers. A simple one that happily consumes heap until you run out, a more sophisticated version that funnels old sessions to disk and reloads them on demand, and then the failover aware sessions. But, even the generic base version would try to persist session between restarts. Finally, if you're having issues, you can always wrap you non-serialized items into a class that IS serializable, and either simply lie (so that if it actually TRIES to serialize it, it will fail and throw an exception), or mark the fields as transient so they won't serialize. There's also the option of digging deep into the Tomcat source code and just "fixing" it and remove that limitation, but that's rather drastic. customizing login.jsp
I've got a JDBC realm configured and working and would like to customize the associated login.jsp. Right now any images I refer to in the jsp are not found at runtime. Do I have to add these to the servlet's war file? Or am I just putting the resources in the wrong location (under the servlet directory)?
RE: is it worth upgrading to tomcat 5.5.9 over jdk1.4?
I don't think you lose anything, assuming your application works fine. You gain: * A 64-bit Sun JVM for x86-64. * SNMP monitoring of the JVM. * The ability to attach a profiling to a running JVM and see what all the threads are doing--useful for catching production problems as they occur. I didn't notice any negative side affects migrating our application over from the Sun JRE 1.4.2 => 1.5.0, it "just worked." J. Re: Tomcat on Mac Stops Unexpectedly
well - if Apache is the culprit - why do you want to run it at all. Why not shut it down? I am assuming that Apache was dedicated to your application which runs on Tomcat.. Actually matter of fact I have encountered quite a few instances (not on Mac though) where Tomcat runs best if not better than when integrated with Apache. Tomcat comes with its own webserver and if you know how to handle a few security related details I think you can have tomcat deliver all that u expected out of an Apache-Tomcat combination ststic content included. RE: Dynamic to static conversion
Hi Dola, A strategy you could employ is the following. All data for your items can be held in a persistence store of some kind (DB, XML). For each product build an XML representation and then use XSLT to convert each item to a html file. Then when requesting to view an item you can build up a Struts template (Or whatever technology your prefer ;o) ) and insert the static file, wrapping round it all your dynamics (Shopping cart, account details etc). When ever an item is updated you can simply redo the translation. An added benefit is that if you wish to search the content you have static html files you can search using Lucene (Or whatever technology your prefer ;o) ) and you know you are only searching the content, not any of the 'wrapping' of a page. I have used this strategy for my sites and it is very inexpensive in so far as the html for the item is done for you. No runtime presentation logic is required. -Original Message- From: Dakota Jack [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 29 April 2005 14:48 To: Tomcat Users List Subject: Re: Dynamic to static conversion There is no reason I can think of to build static pages dynamically. I'm getting: admin.2005-04-28.log, catalina.2005-04-28.log, host- manager.2005-04-28.log, localhost.2005-04-28.log, and manager.2005-04-28.log They're all 0 bytes. RE: Interface to admin & manager web application
Thanks, but that of course is obvious and I have mentioned the same. I was looking for the definition of the URIs for direct HTTP and/or JMX query calls, i.e., a client interface to the admin and manager web applications. Most of it I could reconstruct by reading the URLs submitted from the default browser GUIs for these applications but was wondering if there exists a reliable document listing them. Actually, what the OS's do is they keep the other file around until the file is closed, even though it's been deleted, it won't "go away" until the file is actually closed. The entry in the directory may be gone, but that actual data for the file is still around. When the file is finally closed, the system realizes there are no more references to it, and removes the actual data. Just clearing up the process.. Re: Question Title: Newbie Tomcat 4.0 install gives 500 "No Context configured" error @ HTTP localhost
lets see if you have everything right: You have installed tomcat from an install available from the tomcat website?? I assume yes - so that is out of question that the install file in corrupt. SO probably you opted for a custom install and checked out that u did NOT want examples to be installed. If that is true then it explains why you do not have examples and other folders under webapps. Ok - tomcat console having only those 4 lines is ok - every version comes with its own messages - and I could swear that there was a tomcat version that showed only that much. The Socket exception - I too get it - but that is only when my database is down ( I use mysql btw) - but since you have not yet deployed any application let alone configure it with oracle - I would rule out any databse probelms as of now. So u can do this to quickly check if tomcat is up or not. under webapps directory (there is one I suppose under TOMCAT_HOME/!!) create a folder called root under root create another folder called WEB-INF in WEB-INF create an empty file called web.xml {enter this info into web.xml: http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee"; xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"; xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/web-app_2_4.xsd"; version="2.4"> } no parantheses. under the root folder previously created, create an empty file called m.html now restart tomcat and on a web browser address bar: http://localhost:8080/m.html If this still does not work, you need to make just one more change to troubleshooot (and reach my wit's end) stop tomcat open server.xml and add this line below the last tag: then restart Tomcat and give the same address on a browser. It should work!! HTH, Anoop On 4/29/05, Michelle Bruns <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Hi there, > > I do not have a webapps/ROOT directory. It's not in my install ZIP > file either. Java Preferences is the way to go, but you need to provide a mechanism to manipulate them (whereas with property files you can simply use an editor). Ideally this mechanism is within your webapp, but you need to ensure that it can work with potentially Really Bad values in the preferences (i.e. if your property editor part breaks with bad properties, it's kind of hard to fix them, eh?). A notable scenario being "I forgot my admin password" or something else. One thing you can do is to put a "reset" directory in the top level of your WAR, then put a ResetProperties class within there (in the "reset" package, of course). Then, in your webapp protect the "reset" url with an invalid role. Finally, when the user needs to reset their preferences, they can simply do: java -jar WebApp.war reset.ResetProperties and it will set the preferences to reasonable defaults. A WAR file is simply a JAR file, so this should work just fine (I haven't tested it). You protect the "reset" path so that it can't be downloaded over the web. The reason you jump through these hoops is because the Java Preferences stores its values differently on different systems. Notably it uses the Registry on Windows, and a file on Unix (in the users home directory). But, rather then fighting that, you can provide something that will work consistenly across platforms by leveraging the API and Java. Re: Question Title: Newbie Tomcat 4.0 install gives 500 "No Context configured" error @ HTTP localhost
Anoop, Thank you so much for taking so much time to so thoroughly respond to my message. I tried your suggestions, but no luck. It sounds to me as if maybe you are describing a scenario for a newer version of Tomcat than I was using (4.0, because my instructor said it was "easier", ha). For example, I have no install file, only a .zip to extract. And when I tried your XML test, on Tomcat startup I got "org.xml.sax.SAXParseException: Element type "web-app" must be declared." I have since installed Tomcat 5.5, and it works fine. I can see that the web-app element is perfectly valid in the newer version, so your advice probably would have been right on for a newer Tomcat install than 4.0. I guess since I have 5.5 running OK, I'll try to do my classwork using it, and hope it's not too different for me to do my assignments which assume 4.0 . Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it. XML
Hi, I am not sure if this is the right group to pose this question to. If it is not, I apologize and would appreciate if someone could point me to the right place for an answer. I have XML as a org.w3c.dom.Document that I construct in Java. At runtime, I need to save this as a file. Could someone tell me how to do that. Is 5.5.9 stable?
I've been battling this all week, I'm hoping someone can lend a helping hand. I read that Tomcat 5.5.9 was the latest stable version and so I downloaded it and installed on Linux FC2 and AIX 5.1, though I realize on the website it says 'current development focus'-- does this mean it is not stable? I attempted to follow the accompanying documentation on setting up a JDBC resource, as well as similar instructions in a book that I purchased. I could not do so because I found that 5.5.9 utilizes a seperate context.xml file which does not seem to be referenced in any documentation anywhere. This changed things, such as the location of , etc. I attempted to compensate but I could not get a JDBC config to work without error. I read one post on the internet in which a user ran into the same problem and the advice was to go to 5.5.8-stable, which is not available on the primary downloading site. In desperation, I installed Tomcat 5.0.28 which seems to work well but I want to make sure I am using the latest and greatest. All I want is a stable version that works. Which version should I use? To me the online instructions on the matter do not seem clear. Thanks so much for your comments / suggestions. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am not sure why you had a blank (empty) webapps directory - possibly because you chose to download a version of tomcat4.0 which has no examples included... I have done nothing at all to the web.xml. There was abs nothing wrong with your TC installation - except that it required an application to see if it works. I extracted the root folder from TC4.1.30 and gave it to u. The web.xml is the default delivered one for the root app. hope you have a wonderful project. Is your machine's IP mapped to www.anishanumandla.com ? Try running "nslookup www.anishanumandla.com" and/or "ping www.anishanumandla.com" from the command-line and see what you get. It not, you can test using the hostname by creating a local mapping C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file. RE: 2 nd Try : help need for hosting the website
When you try place www. anishanumandla.com in the navigation bar, your request is translated by the browser to http://www.anishanumandla.com. This will attempt a connection to your server on the default port of 80. Look at the difference. anishanumandla is the name of your servlet in the localhost sample. What is the external name of your machine? If it is anishanumandla then try http://www.anishanumandla.com:8080/anishanumandla. For www.anishanumandla.com to be recognized to the outside world, you must register the name with the WC3 group. Try using your external IP address instead of the name like: http://216.109.112.135:8080/anishanumandla Tomcat does not broadcast your name to the whole world. Robert S. (Maybe not so) strange behaviour of request.getRequestURL()
Hi all. I've been struck all of a sudden with this. servletRequest.getRequestURL() returns null. Now, thinking about it, I can give some facts that might shed some light on it and I'm pretty sure I know why it is happening, just want to confirm with you guys. And just wandering if anyone can tell *what* is happening. I repeat, I think I know the cause. I'm building a Struts based application and I had a Struts Action that was, at one point, extracting the URL and playing with it. "All of a sudden" it stopped working, belching with NullPointerException. Same method, no change. One thing that I DID change was Struts chaining. I have created another action that is in front of it and chains in on that one, without redirects. This effectively means that I have one active component, like a Servlet (OK, Struts Action is not *exactly* a Servlet, but it is very close), which forwards to another. It would appear, that the second component in the chain of request handling is either loosing or is never getting some request properties. So, my questions are: 1. (obviously) Has anyone else seen this in Struts? 2. What would have happened in the case of real Servlets? Suppose I create 2 Servlets, have one forward to another, will the second Servlet be able to get request.getRequestURL()? It could be that this is Struts' mucking around, but it could be that it is a feature of JSP/Servlet specification. Re: Is 5.5.9 stable?
Both are latest and greatest. If 5.0.28 works fine for you then I don't see any reason not to stick with it for now. The main difference in the two (as I have read) is that 5.5 does not need the JDK and as such resolves some license issues for a lot of users who wanted to package and distribute Tomcat as turn key. The JRE can be done this way but not the JDK. So for now you are fine with the 5.0 branch. And please anyone correct me if I am wrong here or the is any other major reasons. As for the JDBC did you follow the instructions on the 5.5 web page? The 5.0 page is different and will not work. I know there is a note on the 5.5 page, but maybe we could ask nicely if someone could put a big warning on the 5.0 page about 5.5 As for 5.5.8 there should be a link for the archives that will take you to it. The problem I'm seeing is that when I point my browser to an "index.htm" file, Tomcat gives me a 404, telling me it cannot find "index.jsp". Please notice I said, "index.htm" and not "index.html". Here's a peek at the HTTP headers as captured by Firefox. I'm only showing the relevant headers. GET /fred/bob/index.htm HTTP/1.1 Host: xxx.test1.com HTTP/1.x 404 /fred/bob/index.jsp Server: Apache-Coyote/1.1 Is that crazy? I'm asking for index.htm and it *DOES* exist. If I rename it to index.html everything works fine. I know what you're thinking -- probably I do not have the "welcome files" set right in my default web.xml. Well, here it is: index.html index.htm index.jsp And I am *NOT* overriding these in the web app's web.xml. Can someone running TC 5.5.9 as a standalone server please see if you can serve an index.htm file? Thanks much, Bob - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: How to run tomcat without specifying a JDK location?
Hi Jason, Thank you very much for replying. It worked. I modified setclasspath.bat to NOT check for the presence of jdb and javac. I was then able to start Tomcat by using 'catalina run' and 'catalina start'. Now I have a few more questions: 1) What is the role of the tools.jar file? Does it help in compilation of JSP's? I mean, is tools.jar enough to compile JSP's without a JDK? 2) On Windows, I have registered tomcat to run a system service. If we modify setclasspath.bat, how do we make the service startup not depend on the JDK. How to specify just the JRE? Can we modify the service parameters (using tomcat5w) to point to the JRE's jvm.dll? Is that just enough? Eagerly awaiting your replies... Among other things, tools.jar contains the various class files that comprise javac, so that's all you need to compile .java files. In order to translate JSPs into Java source, you need jasper, and that's already part of the Tomcat distribution. I think you can just put tools.jar into common/lib, but I haven't actually tried it. You can also just create a lib directory under the directory JAVA_HOME points to, and put tools.jar there (I have done that). > Can we modify the service parameters (using tomcat5w) to point > to the JRE's jvm.dll? Is that just enough? I think that's all that's needed, but I don't have a 5.0.x level installed on any of my Windows boxes any more to verify that. I seem to recall that the executable was just tomcatw in 5.0.x, but I'm not sure. Why don't you just try it? - Chuck THIS COMMUNICATION MAY CONTAIN CONFIDENTIAL AND/OR OTHERWISE PROPRIETARY MATERIAL and is thus for use only by the intended recipient.
