Subject: [Torios-dev] migration from zenity to FLTK stuff

Hi,

I have been really busy lately with real life stuff... lots of things
going on...

Anyhow, I finished an initial test for an FLTK based (X11) volume indicator.

There are some obvious issues:

 - background does reflect the background of the dock... the place where
the icon goes, but it looks OK on default ToriOS theme.

 - icon looks pretty terrible.

 - preferences dialog crashes

 - no way to configure it.

 - volume slider works counter-intuitively (down is up)

But... all those issues aside, it does indeed work for ALSA. You can
watch the volume change, and modify it with the slider.

I have some initial code for the scroll button to change volume, but
have not implemented it.

IF you want to give it a try update your repos, and install

fltk-volume

then run it from a terminal (same name as package)

this will run it side-by-side with the current one so you can see how
bad it looks, and how well it actually reflects the changes (it does
work nicely)

This means, I can eventually (probably) move the battery icon into a
similar one, or perhaps make the volume one handle either, just run with
a different argument.

Feel free to test it.

I also have started work on moving all the little programs into little
binaries. I have the askpass program already moved to FLTK binary, and
will work on the about dialog, and eventually the others.

Hi Guys,

Just a thought ; has anyone considered using SourceForge for the project files
as a backup for Phil's personal server site which is not 100% available (as we
have learned from the past)? We would lose everything if Phil one day pulled
his server for whatever reasons (apart from what we personally have downloaded
and saved).

Hi Jack,

*Only the tarball on USB and the rest of the Live iso file on a CD*

The other alternative (with a big iso file including a tarball) works on
DVD and USB pendrives and memory cards (that are big enough).

HI Israel et al,

Can you clarify for me: when you have mentioned storing a tarball on a USB

including the tarball on the USB stick, or just the tarball on USB and the rest
of the Live iso file on a CD?

Hi Israel, Nico,

1) I have no opinion one way or the other about the suggested wallpapers; I'm
not very good at judging what is artistically pleasing one way or the other;
although I will just say that a refreshed wallpaper maybe a good idea over the
one we've had for a long while now.

2) Is it absolutely a requirement to still now produce a CD-sized iso? If it
still is, then can the tarball be removed and downloaded at install time? Just
a thought.

Hi Jack,

Please tell us what you think about

1. The suggested wallpaper(s).

2. How to balance between size and completeness of the ISO file:

---
Aside from that changing the size by KiB is not going to do much, we
need to reduce it by MiB. Systemd really made our footprint balloon
pretty substantially, and make some things more complicated and not work
as well... but... it is what it is :) I will again try to limit the
size of everything in the newer ISO, however I may have to dig deeper
and look for things that I can get rid of, and see if I can shrink the
tarball pretty substantially, OR

a.) rework the live system to be extremely bare bones (text only) for a
special CD sized ISO.

b.) make an ISO with the tarball NOT included so it can be kept on a USB
to install to keep it CD sized.

Hi Israel, and all toriosadores,

1. I am waiting for the opinions of you other toriosadores ... :-)

2. Instead of shrinking the tarball pretty substantially, I think your

If possible, I think it would be best with a text only live system for a
CD sized ISO file. But I have tested the alternative with a separate
tarball (or separate tarballs) with the original One Button Installer,
and if the user group people accept it, fine :-)

Hi Israel,

1) I couldn't get zsync to complete and so I re-downloaded the full new iso
file.
2) md5sum didn't match.
3) Installed ok in VB using text mode obi installer.
4) Installed chromium browser ok using Common Tasks.

That's all for now,

Hey Everyone,
I uploaded the newer version, which worked pretty well in my testing. I fixed
the missing /etc issue, and I think most of the other things.
I did not get a bunch of time to test it, but my initial testing did well, and
it all worked.
So please re zsync or download the newer ISO.

logical in the menus, at least the things I can control.

In my testing the reboot option worked, however your mileage may
vary... Nio has brought to my attention 2 major things that need
addressed before I can let the main ToriOS list know that there is an

Hi everyone,

Paul - I have added the fixes you requested and things should be more
logical in the menus, at least the things I can control.

In my testing the reboot option worked, however your mileage may
vary... Nio has brought to my attention 2 major things that need
addressed before I can let the main ToriOS list know that there is an
ISO ready to be tested. So this one will be an intermediary testing
release. Please check to see that things work nicely and that there are
no more major/minor issues that we can see. I will work towards fixing
the other things ASAP.

The zsync should work this time and if you don't want to refind the
links:

All in one download and check:

ISO and manual md5sum

Hey everyone,

You can zsync/download the latest ISO.

I have it named as ToriOS-Testing.iso

Here are the links!

All in one download and check:

http://phillw.net/isos/torios/ToriOS-Testing.iso.zsync

ISO and manual md5sum

http://phillw.net/isos/torios/ToriOS-Testing.iso

http://phillw.net/isos/torios/md5sum.testing

Paul noticed some issues with the user configuration dialogs in his testing,
and those are fixed, but NOT in this ISO... they will be in the next build.

I also noticed I need to update JWM for this version... there may be some minor
issues from this (jwm -p will complain about the 'Mouse' tag until I do update
it)

AFAIK autologin works... at least it has the past 4-5 times for me on my VMs,
so this is fixed.

Memory is now displayed properly in the text-mode-menu.

Things work pretty well now, and PAE installation should NOT show up, since
Stretch does not have a non-PAE kernel neither does bionic for that
matter which we may need to address at some point.

The 'firstrun' dialog should now actually work. If it doesn't:

sudo apt update && sudo apt -y full-upgrade && firstrun

And see if it works... I may not have gotten the update in (not sure I've
rebuilt and tested and tweaked so much in the past few days I cannot say for
sure if the update is in)

So... test and see how close we are!

Yes I know about this bug. Debian Stretch does things very differently I have

2) Trying to use Common Tasks to install several common browsers never worked;

This is a good catch, I think I have not updated that to fully support Debian

it could also be that the architecture being 686 is the issue. I will check on

Hi everyone,

I have located the issue within text-mode-menu and everything bringing
it into a fully working version!

However, I had long ago, reworked certain parts of OBI for specific use
inside X even when using dialog, so there are a few things I am working
out to make it work better now.

I have also been really trying very hard to modularize OBI and make it
so I use less functions repetitively. So, I have brought all the common
code I could into the main sourced file which I have renamed
'obi-functions' so it is easier to understand in the code (function is
a keyword in bash, so the filename functions might be unclear at times).

I found some more old bugs in doing this. Some things were not being
caught because there was not error checking to catch these things. It
has made a lot of problems show up, since I now test the result of most
commands. Some things just carried on without noticing the error, and
now things stop abruptly. This has made a lot more work for me, but
things are now logging accurately and being worked out quite well, since
it is quite easy to see which thing failed in what file :)

I am very near having an ISO for public testing, though I still need to
make sure that this next OBI build has everything fixed in it. I have
only been testing the standard installation mode, but I have tested it
in the text-mode-menu OBI, as well as the zenity OBI.

I accidentally removed the title from this script when trying to add the

Hi all,

This is a quick update from the development side of ToriOS.

There have been some usability issues found in OBI, so the next version
of OBI (currently in testing and development) will have a simpler menu
system (though you can still revert to the more complicated menu by
enabling the advanced mode). I have also been trying to address dialog
sizing issues (title bars are cut off) and also offer a good default to
assist users installing GRUB (indicate they might install it to the
device they are installing to).

I have also tested installing ToriOS from one computer booting the live
ISO to install onto an external USB drive, which works quite well.

The next release of an ISO will be a good step forward bringing in a
culmination of a lot of testing and fixes!

Thanks!

Ok Jack, this fix is in the new package, as well as fixes for OBI (hopefully

I also made some more minor improvements to the OSmaker/ISOmaker common scripts

Hey all,

This one is a pretty neat version. Autologin is disabled (since there
is a bug that Jack discovered) and so it will tell you lightdm is not
installed.

However I built the tarball using OSmaker scripts.

I also modified OBI a bit, to simply generate the fstab file, and let
the grub installer generate all the configuration files. It works
well. The past 5 builds I made like this all worked so I am pretty
confident this will work well for you!

Hi all,

I made a menu program similar to the XFCE 'Whisker Menu'

It is small and reasonably fast, as well as fairly configurable now.

If you get a chance test it out.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install fltk-dash

I might default it to a right click on the Apps button, or a middle
click if this is a good enough program for general usage.

I've had a guy testing it a bunch, and suggesting features, and
improvements, so it does work, and works pretty well and is stable by now.

There may be a few quirks that I missed but it seems to be a really nice
light alternative to heavier things!

This is really odd, it installed and booted fine on my KVM machine. the

It is really strange that it isn't working though...

Hi Israel,

1 screenie attached... showing files you mentioned.

I noticed in /etc/fstab there were comments about finding drives on sdb1 and
sdb5 which I tried then editing fstab entries to use /dev/sda1 and dev/sda5 but
it still got stuck waiting on hold for a job that never finished...the
/etc/fstab contents shown have my edits included.

Hi everyone,

I finished making a 64bit version of Debian Jessie with a lot of the
Accessibility options baked in.

If you are interested (it contains none of the problems Jack reported AFAIK)

http://phillw.net/isos/torios/ToriOS-mpmc.iso

It is MUCH larger 903MiB but contains a more full Live ISO
(jwm-settings-manager, geany, synaptic)

I have further refined ISOmaker (git clone
https://github.com/Israel-/ISOmaker.git) and have a really decent
[https://avatars1.githubusercontent.com/u/4912582?v=4=400]

Israel-/ISOmaker
github.com
ISOmaker - ToriOS ISO maker script

working system that allows a lot of customization based on ARCH (like
amd64) and RELEASE (xenial, jessie, etc...)

You can make the release fairly easily on your own but you will either
need a premade tarball OR you will need to specify no tarball (--no-tarball)

It will cache things to make subsequent rebuilds much easier.

If you want to learn more about it run ./ISOmaker -?

There is also a README for the github page which gives a quick overview

[Torios-dev] Testing: Re: Autologin

2017-08-26 Thread Cinque Port Computers
Hi Israel,

Installed fltk-lightdm ok.

It worked to switch from an initial having to login step to an autologin state
by adding my name into the 'Autologin user' field and then 'save'.

But I couldn't get it to revert from autologin to not autologin by removing my
name from 'Autologin user' and then 'save'. It always now autologs me in and
repopulates the 'Autologin user' field as far as I could tell.

Hey Jack,
please update and let me know the results.
I most likely fixed the menu issue... the KDE desktop file for synaptic was
being included (I had some issues with the not show/only show code that should
be fixed)

I also pushed an update to the desktop stuff SO... it very well might work.
Basically what my update is doing is checking your jwmrc file for the new Mouse
context OR the new file I am using for inclusion (This will mostly keep the
user's file the same).
If it isn't there then (hopefully) the jwmrc-mouse file is copied to the user's
home directory (IIRC I copy it to .cache or .config) and included into the
user's jwmrc

So... update and then it should *just work*
If not... bummer I'll try again and build a new working ISO.
I am building a 64bit ISO for someone who wanted one... it has a bunch of
premade accessibility things already configured out of the box... but this can
be changed of course...

When we fix the menu issue and the upgrade path for the new JWM/jwmrc stuff I
will make a new ISO

Hi Jack

 apt show jwm-menu

should tell you something like

jwm-menu - 3.0.1ubuntu1+106~ubuntu14.04.1

If you have the current version.

If that is the case please run

jwm-menu --reload

And look for synaptic and see if it is right

And torios-desktop should be

torios-core - 0.98.0ubuntu1-448~ubuntu16.04.1

But sometimes the Ubuntu repos take a while to get updated

also can you verify that you ran:

Hmm... I am not so sure why your jwmrc hasn't changed...
I will do some testing and let you know what I can ascertain

Hey Jack,
please update and let me know the results.

If you have the current version.

If that is the case please run

jwm-menu --reload

And look for synaptic and see if it is right

And torios-desktop should be

Hi Jack,
I discovered this issue recently when working on updating the base again.
So... here is the issue...
JWM 2.4.0 IS actually now in the ToriOS repos... but it is a version prior to
JWM requiring the new config system which needs gettext >=0.19 (trusty only
carries 0.18 Jessie carries 0.19 so I thought it would fail because of
trusty...)
Anyhow there are some MAJOR config changes which I needed to work around.
How to fix?
hopefully
torios-packagetool upgrade (aka sudo apt update && sudo apt -y full-upgrade)
Please let me know if this works!

So

Hi everyone,

I added some of JWM's new features to the settings manager. And I will
also be updating JWM to the current git release as well.

On the Lubuntu mailing list someone asked about hdmi audio, and I
discovered a small typoo in my automatic HDMI audio scripts. This
should make life nicer for anyone who hotplugs HDMI into their computer
and expects the audio to work without having to install pavucontrol. I
added this feature because ToriOS is perfect for small form factor
computers. The memory usage is so low, and the menus are extremely fast
even on the oldest computers I have used. They all work significantly
faster than even LXDE menus when you are using a very old computer.

These updates are very minor tweaks and should not really have any
noticeable effect.

Hey Jack,

I am not sure if this is still an issue, but If it is, I have something
to test

Download this attachment
cd to the directory it is in and:

chmod + x starttorios
sudo cp starttorios /usr/bin

I added something extra to this file (not sure if it will solve the
issue... but it may...
Here is the additional code:
while ! xset q &>/dev/null
do
sleep 0.1
done

This basically forces the startup program to wait until X is actually up
and then will proceed to run whatever we need... this uses a variety of
ways to start JWM, depending on what exists in order to start all the
nice things we can to make life easier for our users (using Xsession,
dbus-launch, ck-launch-session OR our current way of starting everything
from our XDG autostart items. I kept the old code in because it will
help someone who just copies my file to their computer without using
torios for their own use it should just work with JWM

I have not gotten any feedback on it yet, so I have not really moved

There are a few other minor things that have been fixed, and some

Hi Israel,

New .iso installed in VB...

Great news -- indeed now you did fix the disappearing desktop icons/shortcuts,
well done.

Can you explain briefly what the problem was that eluded us for so long?

Thanks,

JackT.

Hi Jack.
This is complicated, as I do not know why things fail the way they do.
The culprit in both cases is
/usr/bin/nice-start
previous I just ran the program in
nice-start
this resulted in PCManFM not always working visibly
now I use it differently
nice-start --include
On my computer this is what that command produces:

  ~/.config/jsm-mouse
  /usr/lib/at-spi2-core/at-spi-bus-launcher
--launch-immediately

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/deja-dup/deja-dup-monitor
  /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon --start
--components=pkcs11
  /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon --start
--components=secrets
  /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon --start
--components=ssh
  nm-applet
  xset s off -dpms

/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
  start-pulseaudio-x11
  torios-battery
  torios-volume
  jwm -restart
  update-notifier
  xdg-user-dirs-gtk-update
  zeitgeist-datahub

These are the programs that running nice-start as a will run.
You can check to see what is run in ToriOS by running
nice-start --include
from the terminal

The battery and volume and nm-applet all included.
So, why does this fail one way or the other sometimes, but not every time?

It could be a memory issue? My laptop where I never have this issue has plenty
of memory. The VM probably does not. How much memory do you have in your VM?
The other computers I use ToriOS on are older, but have around 1Gig of memory
and never have these issues.

So... nice-start is the problem, however it is also a solution nice-start
runs all the programs in the XDG autostart directories. So if nm-applet is
removed JWM wont try to run it, as it is only included from the XDG autostart.
This way traditional DE specific guidelines on the internet about creating a
desktop file in ~/.config/autostart will work in ToriOS.

This is why it is complicated and I have tried so many different things.
Here is the actual code that runs on or the other:

[[ -n "$useJWMRC" ]] && EXEC=$(quoteXML "$EXEC") && printf "%s\n" "
${EXEC}" 2> /dev/null
 [[ -z "$useJWMRC" ]] && bash -c "$EXEC" & 2>> "$LOG" &

I used to have 'echo' instead of printf "%s\n" but echo was causing errors, and
this now avoids errors.
I have posted on the JWM bugs a few times concerning this, and have not really
gotten to the bottom of why it doesn't always work. The current form works
much better but still there are issues.

Not sure what else to do... can you post your ~/.starttorios.log and
~/.jwm/jsm-logs/nice-start.log
These might give more of a clue

Hi Israel,

I still haven't found a way of creating a desktop shortcut that appears.

But what I did find is the following:

1) I copied the sakura .desktop file from /usr/share/applications/ to ~/Desktop
and it became visible.
2) On logout/reboot it disappears but...
3) I f I go to Desktop Settings and unclick 'icons on desktop' and then click
it on again the desktop shortcut(s) re-appear.
4) I've also got the Wastebasket and Documents icons to appear and disappear in
the same way.

Hope this helps,

Hi all,

There is a new ISO for testing. This one should work fine with USB.
The network might work in this one too... it is oversized.

Please test the jwm-settings-manager.

Test every single part of it that you can, and if you encounter a bug
please tell me:

a) how to reproduce the bug

b) re-run the settings manager with `jwm-settings-manager --debug >>
jsm-debug.log` and reproduce the error, and then send the log.

Hi Jack,
Hmmm, you are right. I wonder if this is an issue with the pcmanfm conf file.
I though I fixed the ownership issue, but can you make sure you own ~/.config/
as well as
~/.config/pcmanfm/default/
and then the two files:
pcmanfm.conf
desktop-items-0.conf
this may be the culprit

Hi Jack

This indicates that pcmanfm is NOT running to control the desktop.
So.
cp /etc/skel/.jwmrc ~/
should fix it.
Before you do it can you send me your old ~/.jwmrc file? This may be something
I need to look into more to see what is going on... it could be the reconfigure
script.

IS this the ISO named:
ToriOS-Debian-testing.iso
from phillw server? (Just double checking)

Hi Nio,

Using 'fish' originally I had copied your 2 lines of command and pasted them
into my terminal; what I didn't notice at first was that it detected EOL after
the '>' due to the copied 2 line statement from your email. I cleaned it up
and it works fine in 'fish' now too.

On with a bit more testing later today. All explained now. []

Hi Jack,

You were probably tricked by the email client, that made two lines of
the one-line command:

just to illustrate:

xzcat file.vdi.xz > file.vdi

So if you use the following as one line, it should work.

xzcat dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.vdi.xz >
dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.vdi

-o-

Or am I misunderstanding? Do you mean that VirtualBox does not recognize
the extracted vdi file?

After extraction md5sum should show

$ md5sum dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.vdi
ac4cd66df2fe8ccd7cd0f495c0bdea9f dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.vdi

and ls -l shows

$ ls -l dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.vdi
-rw-rw-r-- 1 nio nio 2006974464 nov 25 11:40
dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.vdi

(approx. 2 GB, so I prefer to distribute it compressed).

It works with my VirtualBox (in Lubuntu Xenial). Please tell if you are
still having problems.

Best regards

Hi Nio,

I downloaded the .vdi.xz file, ran md5sum with success, but using xzcat or xz
on the .vdi.xz file I'm getting "File format not recognised".

Any ideas?

Hi toriosadores,

*Files to install ToriOS-Trusty to test what Israel develops*

Now I have uploaded two tarballs, a compressed image file and a
compressed virtual disk image. You find them and their md5sums at

http://phillw.net/isos/linux-tools/torios/01_Test_Tarballs/

dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.img.xz # install with mkusb
ToriTrustyTest01_by-OBI-in-Trusty.tar.xz # tarball for 'my' OBI
ToriTrustyTest01_by-ToriOS-debian.tar.xz # tarball for ToriOS 1.0
dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.vdi.xz # disk for VirtualBox

Three of the files can be used as they are by mkusb and the two OBI
versions. The vdi.xz file must be expanded before it is used with
VirtualBox,

xzcat dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.vdi.xz >
dd_ToriOS-Trusty-Test-01_7.8GB.vdi

Connect the vdi file to a virtual machine and boot ToriOS. You should be
able to update & upgrade it with Israel's new versions in order to test
them.

I had very low resolution in VirtualBox, only 640x480, until I set

GRUB_TERMINAL=console

and ran

sudo update-grub. See the attached screenshot. After reboot the
resolution increased to 1024x768. (I did not install any guest additions.)

Happy testing :-)

Hi Nio,

You can start from mini.iso installed, or server, and possibly installed
ToriOS would work too.

This is for Ubuntu (precise, trusty, xenial) though Xenial is the only
officially supported version. Trusty will have out of date packages.

Hi Israel,

Yes, I can get desktop shortcuts to appear as you suggested but on logout/login
or reboot they disappear again.

Cheers,

Jack,

try running the desktop settings and then uncheck 'Icons on Desktop'

And then check it again.

This *may* help...

not sure, but worth a shot :D

Hi Jack,
Could you run it from the terminal please?
jwm-settings-manager --desktop
Also, your .jwmrc might need adjusting.
I will have to do something to modify the jwmrc for sure, once this is ready to
roll out to the users.
To list all the jwm-settings-manager options you can use
the -h --help or -? options

Thanks for these details, Israel :-)

I have another question too (very basic about where to start).

Can I start with (which would you expect to work)

- ToriOS 1.0 live
- ToriOS 1.0 installed
- ToriOS daily live (debian)
- ToriOS daily installed (debian)
- Debian Jessie (stable)
- Debian Stretch (testing)
- Debian Sid (unstable)
- Ubuntu 14.04.1 (trusty kernel)
- Ubuntu 14.04.5 (xenial kernel)
- Ubuntu 16.04.1 (xenial kernel)

and where is it best to start testing (what will be best for testing
what you want us to test)?

Best regards
Nio

As odd as it may sound, I think this is related to the App menu.

I figured it might be so I dug into the menu code, and updated the
common library backend to add a couple of output precompiler defines

I made an XML output and a 'Quiet' output

I made sure to test the cache file better to make sure it is
caching.

So, the two main issues were

non XML output and Not caching.

I think this can be verified if you run

jwm -p

If you run this and get NO output then everything is good.

If you get ANY output then the menu is the issue.

You may not get any if it cached well... so you might have to remove
the appmod and cache files

~/.cache/appmod

~/.cache/appmod.old

~/.cache/jwm-menu.cache

then rerun jwm -p

You should get lots of output.

Anyhow,

jwm-menu revision 90

should fix this issue, so update and report back your results!

Hi Jack,

I added '--shutdown' to the available ways to launch it, but I
accidentally moved --halt to the line above (autostart)

I will fix this!! sorry

I am not sure why your desktop shortcut is not visible over
  reboots.

Does it automatically show the 'trash' icon when you see the
  shortcut?

If so, then this issue is that JWM is not loading pcmanfm
  completely correctly

Which may mean I there is something that takes too long to load.
I will check some things out here and see if I can fix whatever it
  is.

Hi again,

Revision 71 is great!

The desktop settings now FULLY work (as far as I can tell).

You can *finally* set a gradient OR solid for pcmanfm (at least here
in Xenity)

SVG backgrounds now show up nicely in the background chooser
program.

Since we are using pcmanfm I set jwm to use an SVG as well, rather
than using a gradient, but this should only effect JWM IF running
pcmanfm.

There is code in there to support gsettings, but I think I will
modify it to use the same type of code. that way things are
universally supported easily.

I will begin working more diligently on some of the other portions
of the settings manager, but in my experience it is MUCH better:

no crashes

much larger support of images

better more clear UI

more features, and configuration

when you have a chance please test out the desktop settings to see
what you think of the changes.

AFAIK the desktop settings, mouse, and fonts fully work as is, and
include many improvements.

There are some issues in the other sub programs, and possibly
missing features.

Thanks

Hey Jack,

Your jwmrc is really screwed up. I am attaching a
version that is better. I fixed it up, and am
sending you it. I named it jack.jwmrc so just
rename it to .jwmrc and copy it to your ~/

See if that fixes your multiple nm-applets.

It looks as though the settings manager needs more
work on the pcmanfm wallpaper grabber portion. It
may be that things are just reversed and it is quite
simple to fix. I heavily modified everything to use
a common library I made (it is also used by the menu
programs, and will be used by other things as
well). This will make maintaining all the programs
easier in the long road.

I will look into this issue and push an update soon

Hi Israel,
Any idea why after creating (for instance) a Sakura.desktop file, the icon
never appears on my desktop? I've checked it exists in my Desktop folder via
PCManFM but it is never visible on my actual desktop.

Subject: [Torios-dev] Yet another Update

Hi everyone,

I have been coding in my spare time on the jwm-settings-manager
  2.0 branch.

Here are the updates:

Mouse/Touchpad:

This is now fully working, and contains code to switch the cursor
theme, and works fairly well. The touchpad settings all work the
  same.

The main difference is that the JWM settings are in a single tab,
and IF NO TOUCHPAD is present a window showing ONLY the JWM
settings will show, rather than a window with options that do not
  work.

Panel:

Most of this works now. There are a few remaining issues to fix,
but the major stuff is working.

The menu editor dialog is much improved (it looks much cleaner
now) and the functionality works as well as it did previously.
There is still no way to remove certain things (there never was),
but I will work on adding that functionality soon.

Window:

Groups work well now, and fully populate, though there are doubtless
some aspects that do not fully work yet.

The window buttons are now designed slightly differently and seem
more compact and clear to me, though you testers can tell me if the
UI changes make sense or not.

Icons:

The icon dialog is up to par with what it was capable of, though I
intend to instate Icon theme usage soon (didn't work properly in the
old one, which is why it would call a script dialog to do this), as
most of the underlying functions have been improved and work much
better now. So currently it is only for manually editing the lines.

Themes:

This works. There are minor issues (the app button doesn't show up,
but that is minor and should be easy to fix)

Desktop:

Everything I have tried works. But I have not completely tested it
all, and there may be a few things that still need tweaking.

Fonts:

This all works well. I think it works the same as the old one,
though I improved some things... for example choosing a font that
has 'bold' will now show up as bold. Same thing for 'italic'

Keyboard:

This is MUCH improved, and mostly working at this point.

There is now a key grabber. You can click a button and then enter a
Key combination which it will grab.

I plan to add a list of XF86 keys (the key grabber doesn't grab
these well)

To make that easy (and make nice names rather than "XF86Calculator"
do something like "Calculator Button")

But this is already improved since you do not have to type in things
like 'Page_Up' since not everyone knows the X standards for key
names, and they must be typed in perfectly or it wont work... So
now it does everything for the user!

To make it easy to test (if you don't want to add the PPA)

Here are the links:

https://code.launchpad.net/~israeldahl/+archive/ubuntu/torios/+files/jwm-settings-manager_2.0.0ubuntu1-66~ubuntu14.04.1_i386.deb

There are most likely bugs that I do not know about... but hopefully
it is relatively less buggy than the previous version.

Hey everyone,

I have finally built jwm-settings-manager 2.0 in a PPA.

It still has a ways to go before it is fully functional, but the
things that already work, work reliably, and it has quite a bit of
  functionality already.

If you want to test this:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:israeldahl/torios
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install jwm-settings-manager
(or dist-upgrade)

I am sure there are bugs, but there is a lot that changed.

I reworked the UI pretty heavily in most places.

I worked pretty heavily on aligning things, and shrinking the unused
space in each window. This will help on low resolution screens
(window size is a big issue sometimes on low-res screens) as most
everything should fit well, but windows will be scrollable still in
the case that they still do not fit (each major window will turn
into a scrollable box if things are off screen).

This is just a test to see what people think about the current state
of this next update.

The UI is basically the same as it was, so it should be familiar to
you. But there are some new things in the works that should help
with getting this where it needs to be.

Hey Jack,

I think the current version (386)

fixes these issues, as well as addresses Keiichi's desire to
promote Palemoon to users.

As I explained to Nio, many will simply redirect the user to
a web page.

Seamonkey is not in the list.

Autologin.

If you are already using autologin you will not see the menu

Since this is just testing right now (we have a few days to
see if these work, or revert so an upgrade doesn't break
things) so I'd like to try this... the code has been there
for quite a few commits, I just never implemented it... so
give it a try.

--

Hey Jack,

I tested as well.. there is some issue that makes it not show up
correctly... I will have to look into things more thoroughly.

I have been toying around with alphabetizing the items, and have
tested numerous times and now I have something that will work
  extremely well in all situations.

Things of note:

If you have desktop files in multiple directories, they will be
differentiated by a menu separator. On my personal computer
  things in my:

~/.local/share/applications/*.desktop

appear first in the menu and then a separator and
  then things in my:

/usr/share/applications/*.desktop

But all is alphabetical now, and I think I improved the
generation time of the menu a bit using std::list, so overall this
  is a very good change!

So, since my testing has shown (many many many many times in a
row) only a remarkable improvement I do not think there is need to
push this into a separate PPA.

You should

rm ~/.cache/jwm-menu.cache ~/.cache/appmod ~/.cache/.appmod.old
  ;jwm-menu

after you get revision 88

Hi Israel,
1) Apps -> System -> Mouse/Touchpad Settings does nothing.2) Looking at the
Apps -> System menu, the menu items list always seems to be randomly ordered;
can you consider making it ordered alphabetically by name for instance? I
swear every time I install , Sakura ends up in a different place in the list
from that menu. Just a thought.
Cheers,JackT.

Hi Israel,
I think once you started that Browser list it has opened up too many glitches.
My initial thought would be just leave Firefox and Chromium in the list and
drop the rest.

Hi Jack,

I am thinking of just redirecting users to the websites of the other
browsers, since they can be problematic.

For instance, with Opera, and palemoon, and seamonkey.

Chromium is the only one that 'just works', qupzilla works on
jessie, but not on precise (which we no longer support officially,
of course), chrome is not complicated to do so i can also automate
it. Midori (i think) works but is not as nice in Debian as it is
on Ubuntu.

Anyhow... I think this is the best solution. I do a check for
xdg-open and I also search for other common browsers just to see if
there is an easy way to make it work to open the website.

What do you think?

I am open to simply downloading the deb files from Opera and
installing them, but I do not entirely know what links to use.

Opera didn't complete well either :(

Hey Jack,

I looked into the firefox issue, and greatly simplified that area of
code (it previously was complicated because of the original hoops
required for Jessie) So the firefox issue is solved.

I too tested seamonkey installation. I wonder if something happened
on their end, as it does not install well (as you noticed) and there
is some issue with seamonkey itself.

We may need to remove seamonkey from the list, until it gets a more
stable release, or something else changes to make it work again.

I did not mess with opera yet, as Opera may have also changed... I
will look into it.

You can test the new version now, as firefox does install again.

[Torios-dev] Testing in VB: RE: new TESTING iso

2016-09-03 Thread Cinque Port Computers
Hi Israel,

Installed latest TEST iso:

1) Trying to install Firefox from the Dialog-Chooser did nothing.
2) Trying to install Seamonkey gives problem (see pic) when trying to execute
Seamonkey after installation.

Cheers,
JackT.
