Touch is over 10 years old, it was slow and had limited memory when it
came out and disk size were much smaller. 
I think a 1Tb disk maybe too big for it and possibly not right format -
IIRC Touch only supports FAT16, FAT32, ext2, ext3 and maybe an old
version of NTFS.

More details needed. 

Stuttering can be due to one or a combination of factors such as data
format (e.g.codec,  Flac compression level), network
connection/buffering/configuration/loading (e.g. Ethernet direct wired
or via powerline or WIFI bridge, other simultaneous users of network
such as video), ability of NAS to deliver data in time (higher data
rates means quick turnaround between request and response essential),
Touch processor load, etc.

What format are the source files being sent to Touch ?
Are both NAS and Touch wired directly into router ?

A faulty or failing WLAN card can produce symptoms described even if
WLAN card is not being used.

Top 3 "fails" with SB Classic.
* PSU
* Faulty or badly seated WLAN card

WLAN card failure can be tested by removing the WLAN card only requires
a Torx T10 - SB classic will work OK without a WLAN card

If by disabling native and transcoding AAC to force use MP3 (using lame)
make the stream playable it means there is a side effect in the
conversion (e.g. sample format such as S24le vs s16le) as the encoded

It seems to me that the 48kHz capability of the DAC is not working. A
few years ago I remember a user with a secondhand SB3 with a similar
issues and it turned out the SB3 was modded and crystal for 48Khz was
disconnected. If a relay is involved for 48Khz - then it is possible the
DAC's 48kHz supporting circuit is broken.

OP should confirm that DAC can still plays 48kHz audio to determine if
the problem is an SBT incompatibility or a DAC h/w issue.

AFAIK LMS sends 24 bits stream to DAC no matter whether AAC / MP3 or
44.1Khz or 48Khz. I believe 16 bit sample source are padded to 24 bits.
However my knowledge on this is limited (and possibly wrong) so somebody
else can provide a definitive answer.

The audio format AAC vs MP3 of the input shouldn't matter as the SBT
will deocde into PCM.

If the DAC has a problem with sample 44.1kHz vs 48Khz rate - then BBC
will show this up - but other stream should play OK.

If there is an issues about sample size - SBT always sends same number
of bits so again input format shouldn't matter.

It is possible that LMS player delay settings which inject "silence"
might cause problems as DAC tries to change sample rate from the
"silence" rate to the audio stream.

More specific information is needed to solve your problem.

BBC is unusual in that it uses 48kHz but SBT can play SBT 48Khz.
SBT can play AAC natively.

Perhaps you you have disabled some transcoding options or some special
plugins installed (e.g room correction) 

Otherwise, it feels like a limitation due to your DAC and / or the
connection.

So full information is needed.
DAC - full detail vendor & model no 
How is DAC connected to Touch - SPDIF optical/coax, USB, EDO, other
etc.
Has SBT been modded ?
LMS version
OS of LMS server.
Any 3rd party plugins installed.

The player such as Touches and SB Classics are getting old and roughly
same age and age related issues such as PSU, WIFI and caps failures
start to show up.

Secondary issues is wifi standards have also changed over 10 years and
older devices can be affected by newer standard such as Wifi6 (as well
as other more widespread use of 2.4G freq such as BT and Zigbee etc)

More system & player details always helps 

As a first step - try enabling the BBC Sounds settings "Hide the audio
sample rate from LMS. This can help with a specific transcoding issue on
devices that can't natively support 48000"

This looks to be a station and/or Tune-in issue.

The stream itself has "odd" meta data - the STREAMTITLE seems to be out
of sync (or not updated) with the tracks.

The stream itself http://media.wlmm.dk/jul dopes not have cover art.

If the stream is being played from a Tune-in URL - then Tune-in will
provide cover art from the STREAMTITLE - which as noted - is out of
date. 

Is the art you see "Boney M Mary's Boy child" - if so then it looks like
the issue is with station not LMS or player.

If the WLAN module is really dead and you need Wifi - thgen you can use
an external Wifi to Ethernet adaptor 

Some user which had Wifi problems with Radio have used a Vonets VAP-11G
with success - powered through in line connection but with Touch you
have possibility of using Touch USB socket for power (IIRC up to 500mA)

There are many types of adaptors that can provide the Wifi to Ethernet
conversion such as nanorouters (in reverse AP mode) or extenders such as
NetGear EX3700 and using Ethernet connection.

USB support for devices is what I recall but USB 2.0 power for disc will

I have a Touch working with a Netgear Orbi but it is the older model
Rxx50.

SB player do not work on 5GHz - so don't worry about settings for 5GHz.

You only need to change settings for 2.4GHz . 

Disable the features that make them incompatible such as 40MHz Channel
bonding. You could aos try disabling Roaming.

Simply enabling /disabling features on the UI and then seeing if it
works may not be the best test method. It may be necessary to reboot
player and router to ensure all old value in caches are flushed out as
this is time consuming, you may need to do a bit of homework to
understand features and whether they might cause problem with old
802.11g devices.

If another Touch  (with same f/w) works OK in exact same place, then
issue is h/w or PSU.  Have you tried swapping PSU of "bad" Touch with
"good" Touch. With both Touch's in same place does problem follow the
PSU ?

IIRC the Touch internal DAC does not support 192KHz - with EDO *only*

Have you checked the remote with a digital camera/phone - as they can
"see" infrared 
A few user have reported the IR sensor on their Touch failed - so first
confirm whether problem in remote or Touch.

You can do a search of the forum, there are dozens of thread about Tidal
recently stopping for users.

SB devices do not support https.   This is probably your problem.

Tidal has moved to use https in some countries.  
If you are unlucky then you have to have local LMS system to handle the
https for the SB players.  
The local LMS can be a Raspberry Pi. 

Your country info would help mherger give more definitive advice.

I think you are mixing up "sample rate" and "bit rate"

Sample rate is the number of audio sample per sec to make up audio
stream e.g. CD 44,100  16 bit samples 

The audio stream of a specific sample rate can then be compressed (lossy
or lossless) into data stream of bits which has a data rate or bit rate
(i.e. kbits/sec).  The slower the data rate the greater the
compression.

Bit rate was important was using live stream such with digital radio DAB
or TV DVB as player had no buffers - bandwidth of transmission medium
(e.g. satellite, terrestrial) restricted data rate of compressed audio
stream of typically 44.1Khz / 48kHz 16 bit.

Touch is a buffered played so data is sent in bursts so bit rate is not
sdignificant.
Touch will decode the data streams and output the audio sample rate of
the data streams - realtime audio sample rate of 44.1Khz 16 bit will be
sent from digital output regards of whether the data source is 
PCM - 1411k
Flac - about 700kb (can vary according to compression level ) 
MP3 - typically from 32kbs up to 320kbs

CBR will have a maximum data rate,  VBR will be varying but an average
data rate as speced - again the realtime audio sample rate after
decompressing will be same as source 44.1Khz 16bit

You should be able to install the Radionet plugin on any recent LMS (i.e
7.9.* or 8.*).
However Radionet site uses https so you'll need up to date LMS  -
typically at least  7.9.3 and up to date SSL support IO::Socket::SSL (at

If it is on Win7 then it may be worthwhile upgrading to LMS 8.*, it has

Unlikely.

Touch kernel is old so any driver for a USB device will have to be of
the same vintage as the kernel, so chipset in USB stick would have to be
compatible and driver would only know about 2.5Mhz channels  b & g.
Memory usage is tight and so unnecessary drivers were not included - it
make no sense to include a USB ethernet driver when there is both wifi
and Ethernet port onboard.

Rebuffering could mean either Wifi capacity to Touch is at limited (e.g.
sending files as 96kbps WAV and not flac and lots of other wifi traffic)
or interference from other devices (e.g. BT, wireless home cinema
system) 

1. Check for possible conflict/interference from other wifi networks.
Use wifi scanner.  See if any other Wifi nets are nearby.  - set router
not to auto-choose channel and set channel at least occupied or 1,6 or
11 (some users say avoid 6).  Touch is an "old" b/g device and cannot
discriminate as well as newer devices.
2. Some modems routers have new features which be upsetting - turn off
things like bonding, optional feature which may not be fully backwards
compatible with an b/g device. 
3. If using dual bandwidth - move as applicable devices to 5Ghz.

Significant change in development - development is done by community, no
big release backed up by big testing team, lots of continuous updates
with feedback on bugs from community.  8.0 is latest version which has
most development. 7.9.3 only gets essential support.

Most new development are driven external internet services - Spotify,
Tidal, Deezer etc and huge variety of streaming live and on-demand and
podcast services.   New service often require new support of internet
standards  such as security https with TLS 1.3 and so latest version of
LMS has latest support.  

There is support via plugins for playing via Airplay, Chromecast and
uPNP devices.

RPI based players have choice of an array of "hats" with DACs of varying
quality.

I had one of these - they have a Auto Uplink feature which learns where
the up link is - IIRC in practice this means while unit is powered on
make sure the uplink port is never changed.  No harm in unplugging it
just in case it is not switching properly.

Yep, my Windows laptop computer is on WiFi as is the Touch.

Can the Windows computer ping other devices on the wifi ?  This will check
if there is "AP Isolation" or not.

You have checked the conection of the switch and the Nest. Just looking
at online instruction - if Switch has uplink port cable from it goes
into "brown" Nest connection and ISP modem connection goes into "green"
Nest Connection.

Windows is on wifi as well as Touch ?

Does the router have "AP Isolation" mode ?  This would prevent two
devices on wifi talking to each othert ?

I had guessed that as I think Vortex is not Windows based.

What devices are on wifi and what devices are wired ?

After plugging in a device - you should check that IP address hasn't
changed ?

I can't find a manual for a Google Nest router - can it list off all the
devices that are connected to it ?

Sounds like there is no connectivity from the Windows system to the
Touch.  

You can confirm this by opening a windows command prompt and trying a
ping command e.g. ping 192.168.86.39

What is the IP address of the Windows system ?
Is the Windows system using a wired or wireless connection ?

This would probably be something on the router. Logging into the Touch
using ssh enables command line commands to be executed and so test &
check connectivity from the Touch.  If we can't login to Touch then
there is likely a network problem problem not a Touch one.

IIRC Filezilla only file transfer - we need command line access.  What
OS do you have to run a command line prompt Windows, Linux aka
Ubuntu/Debian etc, OSX ?

For linux get a shell prompt and use command ssh root@192.168.86.39

For Windows use puTTY - I'm not familiar with the exact details.

With both I expect the connection to initially fail - hopefully with an
error like "no matching key exchange method found" rather than can't
find 192.168.86.39

By Duet I assume you mean the Receiver part. PSU is usually  the main
cause of the problem. Otherwise duet are quiet good as they have no
display.
If "unstable" is recent and you have changed your router to something
modern (e.g. Wifi 6, mesh) etc. - then Touch may suffer from same
problem.

Not really.  BBC geo limit non UK to typically around 96k-128k depending
on codec.

Best data rates are found playing DASH format so make sure settings as
DASH > HLS > MP3 > FlashAAC

There is a way to play R3 live at 320kbps in non UK - check menus.

WFOS is an HLS stream https://unreal.whro.org/hls/wfos/wfos.m3u8  and so
cannot be played using mysqueezebox.com as HLS is not supported natively
by SB players.

For local LMS there is a plugin PlayHLS v2.3  which can now play this
stream.

The iHeart plugin is just a directory using iHearts feeds.  Whether a
station plays or not is up to the station. That said - I can't remember
a station that didn't play.  IIRC the mobile iHeart App geolocks access
to station but the station still play if you can find the URL

Apps are not plugins.

Plugins are addition to LMS which if necessary are downloaded from
repositories and installed.  The Plugins are managed from LMS WebUI
Settings / Plugins tab

There are three main categories 
(i) LMS supplied - already but not necessarily enabled
(ii) LMS 3rd party included - plugins from 3rd parties but have been
included in LMS repository
(iii) 3rd party plugin which require their own repository URL to be
added to LMS.

The iHeart and PlayHLSv2 are my plugins (i.e. 3rd party) from my own
repositories - so you would need to add the URL to the entries at the
bottom of the LMS Settings/Plugins tab at the "Additional Repositories"
label.  Make sure you copy the full URL and not the text present which
has ellipsis "..." 

The iHeart repository URL is

WSFM seems to be part of the iHeart Radio group of station which may
affect Tune-in listings - iHeart prefers users to go through their App.

As an example how a local LMS can help a bit.
1. Station can be found using the iHeart plugin
2. WSFM has HLS as well as http/AAC streams.  Same quality (about 48kpbs
AAC) but HLS has metadata for tracks/artists but need PlayHLSv2 plugin
to get those.

Because it is depending on mysqueezebox.com and playing stations &
podcasts  direct from the source - there is a growing issues of https
URLs.  There is a growing number of stations /sources which are moving
over to https ONLY URLs and SB Touch & Radio cannot play https directly
- a local LMS will then be needed to proxy these URLs.  

The local LMS can be a very small system (typically Raspberry Pi, Odroid
etc) with no files stored. With PiCoreplayer these small system are very
easy to setup and require virtually no maintenance. Such a small LMS can
also help play a wider number of station which have moved over to HLS or
a plugin is required for best support.

Those look OK as long as router is 192.168.0.1 and it has a DNS server.
Are you using DHCP for SBT ?

What is the IP address of the LMS  ?

Check ping failure of mysqueezebox.com is OK as my SBT connect to my LMS
and returns "can't ping" to mysqueezebox.com (I'm guessing AWS no longer
supports ping) 

What do you mean can play music through WebUI ?  You can p;lay music on
SBT through WebUI or on another player ?
On SBT Settings/ Choose player  - is the SBT ticked ?

The "soft" finish which was used on the lower panel of Touch, some SB
remote and Boom - deteriorates with time - I don't think use of any
cleaner is the direct cause. 

isopropyl alcohol can remove it but with some elbow grease.
There are other stronger products which remove it quicker such as HG
Sticker Remover - but as they stronger they also can remove any printed
graphics possibly the usage indicators above each socket on Touch.

And neither will Radio Paradise Flac work,  but then again AFAICT Radio
Paradise Flac is known for problems (see

IIRC All screensave and light/on/off are done within Touch. A LMS plugin
won't change that.  I think the Screen "Off" setting should turn
backlight off. I have a memory (perhaps before the Off was implemented)
there was an applet that turned off backlight for the audiophiles.

Doesn't have to be a PC - use a Pi or PiZero 

White Noise is often because of format issues (e.g. LE vs BE)  but
debugging TinyLMS and getting LMS logging out of an SBT is hard..

If router is on auto - check if the channel number changes especially
when you have problems. Interference can come from non WiFi source such
as Bluetooth, wireless TV soundsystem, old fluorescent lights etc 

Other possibility is the router applies Transmit power saving when idle
(e.g. overnight) but doesn't get back to full power next day. If you
have a Transmit power saving option. Consider other non "g" options
which may be affecting Touch which is just plain "g" - options such as
"preamble" as CTS/RTS threshold - use a conservative setting.

Did you check for nearby wifi networks ?

Is your router setup to do "auto" channel selection ?

Some routers on "auto" will test & may then change channel about once a
day.  
Alternatively it is your neighbour's router who is changing channel and
interfering with your wifi.  
Either way - checking on neighbouring use of wifi channels is good
practice.

Signal strength does not mean signal quality.

If another source is on same or close to same wifi channel
(e.g.neighbour wifi, microwave, faulty fluorescent light)  - signal
strength will still be the same but due to interference signal quality
will have deteriorated and so throughput can collapse.

1. Check if problem persist if tested using a wired connection.
2. Check for neighbouring wifi users on same and adjacent channels
(don't forget transient ones such as mobile hotspots) 

"Connection reset by remote end "is usually a network issues between
modem and source - so perhaps two issues.

Could be network if it is on wireless.  There are other rare LMS issues
if Touch playback is setup differently to Radio - most related to
transcoding, resampling or players which are synced.

URL should play with that ffmpeg version and Play HLS 1.1 - is the

If the OP is using TinyLMS (and not an externa LMS) which is the inbuilt
LMS of a Touch - then the problem is most likely the underpowered and
memory deficient Touch system.  

IIRC TinyLMS struggles on the Touch as it is only capable of handling
relatively small libraries and trying to do Random play on the whole
library may be too much for it.

Player Setting 

All screen & Screen saver setting are local to Touch & Radio player -

The WIKI advice is for users who don't use an installer - AFAIK deb file
set up things like userids

It is not all bad.   The re-install proved the issue is not due to
installation or LMS version so there is no point in doing a new or
reinstallation.

Take a break. Leave it for a day and in the meantime I'll try to think
of things to test to pinpoint the problem.

I don't know Debian but perhaps there is something odd in the
installation process that others can comment.
I presume you are using the X64 deb file.
Have you tried using the Unix tar ball. It'll be more work but perhaps
the deb is doing things (e.g. permissions, shell scripts) that don't
work well with your system.

LMS startup can be delayed if LMS communication to mysqueezebox and
other internet services (depends on the plugins installed) fail (which
is your original problem).

If comms failure is reason why no response to WebGUI, if you wait ,
timeout should happen and WebGUI will come back to life.

Enabling "d_startup" on the command line options (I can't remember how
to do this with SLIMOPTIONS) will give more verbose LMS startup and
should show where LMS "stops".

Check if port 9000 is "listening" if port 9000 is busy when LMS starts,
it will try to use 9001, 9002 etc until it find a free port.

LMS on original system and LMS on Windows both WebGUIs fail
simultaneously !  This is very strange.  Did it only happen once second

Older versions of LMS used OpenDNS but I checked current version uses
the host DNS server.

DNS operation by LMS can be checked by enabling logging of
network.asyncdns to DEBUG

I'm not too familiar with AppArmor and whether it or something like is
installed on the problem system but it could restrict LMS on a per
application basis.

Otherwise - I still advise checking whether outgoing connections are
seen by the firewall.  If they are seen at the firewall then the issue
is NOT the LMS system.

My summary understanding of the issue.

The user has a Touch and a LMS server on the same LAN.  
The Touch when connected to mysqueezebox.com can play internet radio.  
The Touch when connected to LMS cannot play internet radio.
LMS server has static IP setup but Touch has a DHCP setup.
Both Touch and LMS server have the same gateway IP address - that of the
user firewall appliance.
Touch can play local music off LMS server.
The log file of LMS server shows failed connections to mysqueezebox.com
and firmware downloads. 

Since LMS cannot make connection to internet radio - it looks like an
issue with LKMS not being able to connect to internet.

The setup used to work (i.e. Touch connected to LMS can play internet
radio) but has recently failed.  Nothing has changed between working and
failure.
