Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput

2012-07-28 Thread firedog

Hi-

I uninstalled EDO (for some reason it stopped working in my setup, and
re-installs of both SBS and EDO didn't help). But even though I
uninstalled it from the Touch menus and did a factory reset of the
Touch, I still get the announcement that EDO is running when the Touch
boots up.

How do I eliminate this and make sure all of EDO is removed?

Thanks

[SlimDevices: Touch] 7 inch tablet to replace Touch ?

2012-07-08 Thread firedog

My only real complaint about the Touch is that the screen is too small
to be useful once you get about 7 feet away.
Anyone have an idea if a 7 inch tablet screen would be large enough to
solve this problem? Or do I need to go up to a 10 inch to have the
screen usable at 7-10 ft. distances?

Thanks

LMS will downsample hi res tracks to the lowest common denominator of
connected players. So if you are running a Touch and a Duet, it will
downsample high res to 24/48 so that the Touch can play it.

listening to Abbey Road, DSOTM, or a lot of classical music in anything

To the actual question here, no. The Touch chip can do 192, but John

anything above 96. There's not a simple tweak that can alter the
situation. Don't look for that to change.

I tried running VortexBox player from my SBT (VBP as chosen player

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to update Touch firmware using SSH from command line?

2011-09-24 Thread firedog

written for the Duet controller, but can be applied to the Touch

Firmware Update with SD Card
Download firmware file /jive.bin/ to your PC from
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/7.0/jive.bin. This
location is temporary and subject to change. /Note: depending on how
you download this file, it may download to your machine as
jive.bin.zip. If this happens, rename it to jive.bin (i.e. remove
the .zip from the end of the name). Do not unzip the file before
copying it to the SD card./
The SD card should be formatted with a partition table and a single FAT
partition (should be the norm for SD cards). Recent firmware updates
have improved SD compatibility significantly. See ControllerSDCards for
a list of tested SD cards.
Copy firmware image onto SD card. This must be a /file/ (not a folder)
named /jive.bin/. /(See download note above.)/
Remove the battery door from the back of SqueezeboxController and
remove the battery.
At the top of the battery compartment is cutout shaped like an
upside-down T. This is the SD card slot.
Insert the card contacts-first and with the label facing up. Push it
all the way in. The SD card’s edge should be flush with the top lip of
the battery compartment.
Put the battery back into SqueezeboxController and close the door to
the battery compartment.
If the battery does not fit, then the SD card may not be pushed all the
way in.
Start up SqueezeboxController and select /Settings/ from the /Jive
Home/ menu.
Choose /Controller Settings/ from the /Settings/ menu.
Scroll down the /Controller Settings/ menu and select /Advanced
Settings/.
Scroll down and select /Software Update/ from /Advanced Settings/.
Select /Update from SD card/ from /Software Update/. If you do not see
this option, then Jive can not see the SD card. This could possibly be
due to an incompatible brand or size of SD card or the SD card does not
contain a firmware image.
If a message is displayed about the battery being low, place the
SqueezeboxController into the battery charger and continue the firmware
update.
The firmware updates starts promptly once the /Update from SD card/
option is selected. This should take approximately 90 seconds to
complete. If it appears to stop during this process, you can try again
by removing and reinserting the battery.
Once the update completes, Jive will automatically reboot. You can
remove the SD card any time after the reboot begins.
It may help to remove the SD card if you insert your fingernail into
the indentation at the top of the SD card first.

Firmware update via SSH
No SD card required for this method.
Enable remote access on Platform by turning on SSH via the menus:
/Controller Settings Advanced Remote Login Enable SSH/. The root
password and the IP address of the Platform are displayed. Keep the
Platform on this screen as reference for the next steps.
scp (or equivalent) the jive firmware to /mnt/mmc/jive.bin
Follow steps 10-16 above from section /Firmware Update with SD Card/
above.
Make sure to delete the jive.bin file from the /mnt/mmc directory. If
you don't, the Platform may not successfully complete subsequent
firmware updates. To do so, find out the root password again using step
2 above, log in as root, and delete the file.

Firmware problems

If you need to return your Squeezebox Controller to its factory default
settings, there is a 'Factory Reset' option in Settings - Advanced -
Factory Reset.
If you need to turn your Squeezebox Controller off or reboot it, you
can hold down the 'power/home' button for 4 seconds.
If the firmware is badly locked up, holding down the 'power/home'
button for 10 seconds will trigger a hardware power-off.
Removing and replacing the battery also works, of course.
If you have somehow upgraded to an unusable firmware, the Squeezebox
Controller stores a copy of the previous firmware. You can revert to
the previous firmware by holding the 'volume up' button while
rebooting, either by removing and replacing the battery, or by the
power off methods listed above.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SBT will not automatically connect to wireless network

2011-09-16 Thread firedog

With SB devices and networking, I've always found that setting up
permanent IPs keyed to the MAC address of each device solves many
problems, including ones like yours.

Most routers have controller software (you view it in your browser)
that lets you setup something like this.

Works fine.

As an experiment, try using an SD card. If that works okay, it may

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and built-in server and SBS on NAS

2011-08-18 Thread firedog

The internal server only kicks in if you have a USB stick or HD
attached. If yo turn on the Touch with an NAS running SBS on your
network, it will ask you about the server during setup.

You can also look under settingsadvancedserver info on the Touch.

Likewise there is no web (browser) interface on the Tiny SBS, so if you
are running that, you won't have a web interface that controls what is
happening on the Touch.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Giving up, so I ask you to help me starting again with something different

2011-08-18 Thread firedog

Experience with Tiny SBS and USB drives vary. I've tried mine with an
iOmega
external drive and it works fine, no special problems.

But I also have a fanless ATOM based server running full SBS. Both it
and the Touch are connected to a router by ethernet. I also have a Boom
in another room on wireless.

This works better than the USB based setup. In my opinion it sounds
better (maybe due to noise from the USB HD wall wart PS), has more SBS
features, scans the library MUCH faster, and gives access to the browser
based interface, which is sometimes very useful.

The setup you are describing should work fine. Sounds like you have the
right idea.

But, when I click on it, it tells me that it needs to switch to

[SlimDevices: Touch] suddenly, no ethernet from touch

2011-07-04 Thread firedog

All of a sudden today, my Touch lost it's ability to see an ethernet
network. I've tried:

a)pulled electric plug from Touch and then plugged it back in
b)factory reset - no help
c)change ethernet cable - no help
d)change router - problem remains

All other functions seen to work, including wireless.

Diagnostics of Touch say ethernet: not connected; when I ask the
Touch to connect to the ethernet network, it says no ethernet network
found.

Whatever ethernet port I connect my Touch to on either router, the
indicator light blinks instead of the Touch has stopped functioning.
Okay, but this seems like an odd problem to occur all of a sudden.

Any ideas on how to conclusively diagnose this and/or fix it?

Thanks

Sometimes linear ps is thrown around like any linear PS will be an

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SBT with USB Hard Drive

2011-06-19 Thread firedog

Dead OS HD in my dedicated server. So I plugged in an iomega Prestige
model USB HD that I'd filled with a backup of my music library.

Works surprisingly well. Much better than my previous attempt at using
a USB drive (WD drive installed in empty USB drive case).

I miss a few plugins I had installed in SBS, and yes the Touch is less
responsive (reacts more slowly) this way. I think the sound is also
slightly harsher (maybe due to addition of USB drive wall wart PS to
setup?).

But overall I'm pleasantly surprised. I will fix my dedicated server
and go back to using it; but I could live with this for a while if
needed.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Switching to the linear power supply

2011-06-18 Thread firedog

The whole linear PS thing is a bit overblown. You can buy a quality
switching PS with very fast switching that is just as good.

Many audiophile components have switching supplies, it's not b/c they
are being cheap or b/c it is an inferior technology. Like all things
audio, it's not the technology, it's the implementation. There are
crummy linear supplies, and good switching supplies.

Did you look at diagnostics? Does it say the relevant ports, players,
wifi, ethernet etc are working?

If other methods fail, try hard router reset (you will have to write
your personal definitions into the router interface again), and also
hard Touch reset (5 second press on reset button).

These two will start you from scratch, and then if you can't connect
you may have a hardware problem due to the power out.

- Never - IR, Android/I-device or Web Gui.

- Half the time I use the touch screen.
- More touch screen than anything else?

My listening position is next to my kit, so I use the touch screen
exclusively.

I find the Touch's screen is too small to be useful from most normal
listening distances anyway(10ft-3m); so if I couldn't sit close to the
Touch I'd probably use an iPod Touch/iPad as the interface.

By all accounts on this board and others, the Touch's DAC is decent

 expensive dedicated DAC.

No, I don't think that's generally agreed on. I think it is generally
agreed the the output of the Touch is comparable to that of modestly
priced DACs. Some users think it equals the sound of more expensive
DAC's. I have a decidedly mid-range DAC (MF-X-DACV3), for example, that
I think significantly improves the sound coming from the Touch.

Since the Touch has a volume control I can't I need any additional gear
for a decent hifi system. What I can't determine is whether the analog
Touch outputs will drive the amp hard enough for use with very
inefficient speakers like the Magnepan's. The book that came with the
touch had no specification of the maximum voltage the Touch can output
 from the analog jacks.

Is driving the XPA-2 with the Touch's analog outputs going to work?
Emotiva also sells a relatively inexpensive digital pre-amp, but I
can't see buying if I don't need it.

 Thanks for any advice.

The Touch has line-outs. Not the same as a pre-out. I think it's
designed to be an input to a preamp line-in. I think you could have
issues driving a power amp directly - among them the danger of blowing
out your speakers.

I can't speak to the consensus, but plenty of smart people on this forum

side vs Touch matters to the ultimate sound quality. Try it both ways
and see what you think. It's just a couple of settings in SbS
Settings File Types. But beware of the placebo effectif you can,
get someone else to make the changes and listen a bit both ways so you
are doing a blind test. For me, there is absolutely no difference in
either my TOUCH or my TRANSPORTER.

In general I'm in the camp that the soundcheck mods make a small but
noticeable improvement - a little less hardness, a little more
roundness to the sound. I'm guessing this is because of less RF
interference.

As far as the specific server side question: I don't notice a
difference in SQ, but I do notice a difference in performance. Less
delays, clicks, rebufferings, etc. Especially with 24/96 material. Not
that there are a lot of problems when using the onboard decoding, just
that they are more or less eliminated when switching to server side.
That alone is a good enough reason for me to make the switch. There is
one small downside to server side though. If you have an older SB
player that doesn't native play hi-res, and play it synched to a Touch,
the hi-res won't play over the synched player, as the server will output
the native hi-res, and your lesser player won't be able to handle it.
This doesn't happen when you decode onboard at each player.

If one wants to imagine that they hear a difference afterwords, then
by all means software mod away if it makes one think they are getting
more for their money or out of the unit.

Except that in this case changing the code does things like turn off
the wireless module, which is something the developers would never do.

The developers are NOT trying to make the best sounding device they
can. They are trying to include a certain feature set, hit a certain
price point, and at the same time get a sound quality level that
matches the MARKETING goals. By definition, they have to make
compromises that affect ultimate SQ. The Touch was not designed for
the best sound we can get. It was designed to get the best sound we
can, while including all the features we need for a product with broad
market appeal, and we have to hit the MSRP of $300 so the mass market
will buy it.

Conversely, many mods are done on the basis of lets go for better SQ,
even if we lose one of the software or hardware features - because we
don't care about those features. In an earlier discussion of these
mods, someone wrote that they couldn't understand the point of a mod
that turned off the screen of the Touch. Why buy the Touch, then?,
they asked. But that mod could make sense for someone who has no
intention of using the Touch screen in their setup, and sits too far
from the Touch for the display to be useful. That person bought the
Touch for its OTHER features, and the screen wasn't important to them.

I modded my Touch in a way that eliminated the analogue out and
replaced it with clocks/connectors to a master clock. Do I care? No,
b/c I had no intention of using the Touch as anything other than a
digital transport/user interface. Logitech would never make a mod like
that, as it would limit their customer base to owners of external DACs
and master clocks - a very small market segment. Does the mod improve
the sound? Definitely.

If you do care about those features, don't try the mods that eliminate
them. If those features don't matter to you, consider giving the mods a
try.

+1 But DAC Sound improvement is very subjective, and you may find
the Touch is all you need. To seriously better it you need something
above the level of the giant killer budget DACs.

I have an MF X-DACV3, which IMO improves the sound. But others might
not agree.
You can often find one used online for a reasonable price.

Maybe start with an Eastern Electric DAC ($750 MSRP). It's one of the
value for money DACs on the market.

Again, very worthwhile to try before you buy (or get return assurance
from the dealer). If you have an audio club in your area you could
probably arrange a test of the Touch with and without external DACs
with members of the club.

Short (1 second) press on the button restarts the Touch. It's like
telling your PC to restart instead of shutdown. Works fine. No harm
to Touch or your settings.

Long press will restart the Touch but will restore factory (default)
settings. You can't really do it by mistake, you have to press the
button for quite a while.

Restoring the default settings can be very useful if you are having
problems and don't know why. If you go back to default and everything
works then you know your particular setup was the cause.

I've also used it once or twice when the Touch got confused after I
made changes to my network. It was easier to just run the default
settings and set the Touch up again from scratch that it was to mess
around with it and try to get it to work.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Screen Responsiveness

Hi-

I don't find it too responsive. Rather I find it too small for its
intended use. On the more crowded screens (such as an album song list
or playlist) it is easy to accidentally press the wrong line, as they
are close together.

Also the buttons like next and repeat on the Now Playing screen
are too close together, and the wrong one is also often accidentally
pressed.

In addition, I think to really be useful from across a room (even about
3m), the screen needs to be significantly larger.

All that said, since I sit close to the Touch at my listening position.
I liked it enough that I sold my Duet controller, as it became clear to
me that it had become just a paper weight.

The simplest thing to do would be for you to run SBS in safe mode.
There's a check box for it in the SBS CPanel that you can access from

If the problem doesn't appear in safe mode, then engage your plugins

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wireless vs Ethernet. Any sound quality differences?

2010-09-18 Thread firedog

I agree in theory there should be no difference.

When I was using a Duet and had only standard 16/44.1 files I used
wireless and was perfectly happy.

On the Touch I've switched to wired. Main reason is that there were
problems on my system with some skips and too much (re)buffering,
mainly with hi-res files.

Since switching to wired about 99% of these problems have disappeared.

YMMV - on my setup it made a difference.

As far as sound quality, I think I hear a minor improvement with
wired, but I may be imagining it. I'm not really interested in serious
testing the respective SQs, as I'm staying with the wired for the
reasons mentioned above. As a result I've also used the software mods
to turn the wireless module off.

Is it not true that the wireless module can produce noise that could
slightly degrade the SQ?

I'm not using mySB.com, I'm using SBS 7.51 WHS on my music server (not

Wow, as I'm writing this, I tried again. Now it is even weirder. I
tried mysqueezebox.com and got the same error on all the stations I
tried. But just for grins, I went and tried the Applet: it seems to
work (BBC Radio and BBCi);but from the Internet Radio station menu on
the Touch the BBC World Service results in the error.

I'm thinking that maybe the error has something to do with the
formatting of the stream - some seem to work for me and some don't.

[SlimDevices: Touch] odd Touch behavior - why?

2010-09-10 Thread firedog

My Touch stopped displaying song timing information and stopped playing
entire albums or playlists - just stopping after every song.

Rebooted server with SBS and Touch behavior returned to normal.

So some component of SBS must have crashed, but the server itself
worked. I didn't make any changes in Touch settings.

Can anyone explain this to me? Just curious.

When reviewed by either Stereophile or TAS just about all of Logitech's
networked music players have gotten very positive reviews and sometimes
even more such as a listing in the Recommended Component Section but
nonetheless music streaming and computer based digital audio are more
often than not treated as an interesting divergence rather than a
serious means of obtaining truly high end sound.

I don't think this is exactly accurate. TAS has given quite a bit of
space recently to digital audio, especially USB playback. Of course,
they tend to focus on the very high end equipment - DACs costing $3000
and up, and Amarra, but I think they have come to regard digital
streaming as a serious means of obtaining high end sound - especially
when we talk about files of 96K res and above.

There are at least a couple of regular reviewers there who are
proponents of digital audio. Steven Stone and Neil Gader have both been
quite positive about digital audio in many cases, and definitely do
regard it as true high-end.

At Stereophile, even Michael Fremmer, who's a big analogue proponent
(not anti-digital) just reviewed software for digitizing LP's and
recommended it's use, saying the 24/192 recordings he produced were of
such good quality that he wouldn't have a problem listening to them on
a regular basis, and that the use of software to apply the RIAA curve
gave superior results to that of phono preamp circuitry. Of course he
was also using expensive software and a phono preamp costing thousands,
but that's his normal mode.

Dura, give the Touch some time.

Our brains get used to a certain sound, and when we change a component
we often (subconsciously) don't like the sound b/c it is different, and
our reference sound is the sound we are used to.

Try listening only to the Touch for a few weeks, and then compare to
the SB3. You may find that you prefer the Touch sound once it becomes
familiar.

I've read several somewhat negative reviews of the Touch by reviewers
who didn't know about it's hi-res capabilities or its built in SBS (no

the device.

So it will be refreshing to read a review in Stereophile, as they
should be focussed on the Touch as an audio device.

What's wrong with using wireless? Does it actually make the audio sound

Nothing wrong with using wireless. If that's what works best for you or
is most convenient, then use it.

The mods discussed here are audiophile mods designed for those who
want to get the last little bit of sound quality out of the Touch.

Wireless? Some users report more hiccups when playing back over
wireless, especially with hi-res files, and therefore prefer wired.

One of the mods discussed here involves hacking the Touch so that the
wireless module is turned off when the Touch boots up. Reason? For those
using ethernet (wired) the wireless is superfluous anyway, and the
wireless module creates some noise when it is on that can degrade the
signal (Sound Quality).

How much is SQ degraded? That depends on your ears and your system.
Some users think shutting off the wireless noticeably improves the
sound, others think it makes no difference. YMMV.

If you want to use wireless b/c of personal preference or placement
issues - the mod isn't for you, don't concern yourself with it.

make an informed decision without the basic info needed for that
decision.

Bruce is just the technician in the pipeline, so I don't know what his
responsibility here is. Was he doing what he was told? Or was he ever
told to report on material that wasn't true hi-res, or even to check if
it was hi-res or not?

HD Tracks till this point is apparently claiming that they were unaware
that they were receiving upsampled material. They don't appear to be the
only ones in the industry that were unaware that SACD was routinely made
from upsampled 24/44.1. And the record labels were apparently very happy
to charge premium prices to consumers without revealing the type of
source material the SACD came from.

That's obviously a scam, as they knew that the public would assume the
material was from a superior hi-res source, and they cultivated this
assumption. Note that earlier in the thread the question wasn't are
SACD's hi-res, but are they being converted using upsampling or
not?

HD Tracks willingness to remove this material from their web site seems
to back up their claim to have been duped; however, until they start
giving at least partial credit or refunds for this material (which they
claim they will), there remains a question about their involvement.

Certainly from this point on they have no excuse for such material
appearing on their site, unless they add info to the site that material
may be upsampled from 24/44.1.

Let's see: I have no intention of using the USB or SD features,as I run
music from a dedicated SBS server. I generally only use the digital out
of the Touch, as I've got an external DAC.

My Touch is close enough to my router that I have no problem connecting
wired, and I think wired gives better performance anyway.

I don't plan on disconnecting the screen. But if the software mods
improve the sound, why not?

For me the point of the Touch is to give me high quality native
decoding of hi-res from a music server, and give me the user interface
(including browser interface). That's what I need. YMMV.

The hiface is probably a great product. But to use it instead of the
Touch you need a DAC, and some kind of user interface so that you can
acutally play the music.

happy with the sound. This may be because they aren't volume compressed
anyway, unlike pop music. Example: 24/96 Concerto for Orchestra from
the Everest Label. Lots of dynamics.

2. And even after knowing you were wrong in the first place, you can't

It would be really interesting to put a Touch and a Duet in your system
 and use Audio DiffMaker (http://www.libinst.com/Audio%20DiffMaker.htm)
to measure the analog output of your DACmagic. In theory there may be
some difference, but DiffMaker will prove it.

Not true. Lots of experienced listeners can identify low levels of
jitter. I've personally been tested in a blind test and successfully
identified levels of jitter between 15-30ns. I know of others who can
identify differences even around 10ns. Differences of 100ns, which some
people consider low, was easily identifiable, both by me and others.

2 Caveats:

a)you need to know what to listen for, and be an experienced critical
listener. Just like with many types of perception based comparisons,
experience (I'd call it training your brain to properly interpret what
you are hearing/seeing)makes a difference.

b)a highly resolving system is also needed. On many systems the
difference in SQ between identical tracks with different low levels of
jitter won't be apparent.

The WHS version of SBS adds an SBS panel to your WHS Console interface.
On a WHS machine you uninstall the previous SBS version from your ADD-IN
panel, and then install the new SBS as an ADD-IN component through the
WHS console. This gives you the ability to access the SBS interface
setup for the WHS console.

However, you can just do a normal Windows install of non WHS versions
of SBS on a WHS machine. The difference between this and a WHS install
is that you don't have the SBS panel in the WHS console. But
functionally, both versions of SBS will run fine on a WHS machine. And
the SBS panel in the WHS console doesn't really do much for you.

Hi-res is no different than any other format. It can be well done and

However, I do agree that if the rip-off tracks are too prevalent, the

Just as SACD's don't always sound better than CD's, you never can be
sure that a hi-res file will sound better than a CD - even if it is
true hi-res. It depends on lots of factors.

I haven't listened to a lot of hi-res files, but I have heard
noticeable (not spectacular) improvements from 16/44 versions of same
music with the ones I have. I'd say it's worth it if you have a very
good setup; probably not if you don't.

My understanding is that the Touch doesn't have a native setup for

If I'm wrong about this, Phil or someone else chime in. If I'm right,

Apparently yes. Both Bruce and HDTracks have categorically denied your
claims/interpretation. And said there is material in the tracks, above
22k (i.e., proof of source).

In an earlier response to me, HDTracks said they do not upsample, and
claimed they will remove from their site hi-res tracks they find to be
upsampled.

We now have an example where this seems to be true - they deleted
suspicious files from their catalogue, pending review.

To my way of thinking, any more back and forth about HDTracks is rather
pointless, unless someone comes up with proof (not interpretation) that
they are selling tracks as 24/88 or 24/96 that are upsampled. And if
you do, you should alert them, as they've shown they are willing to do
the right thing.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Why Purchase a Touch??

2010-04-02 Thread firedog

I have a purpose built music server, which I will continue to use when I
get a Touch - the touch will just be the interface.

Advantages of server over Touch + USB drive:
1. Don't like USB drives - prefer internal drives. I can upgrade
internal drive to larger or SSD drive as needed.

2. My server is fanless and virtually silent. Purpose setup as music
server.

3. My server is not particularly powerful (ATOM 330 + 2GB RAM) but it
performs flawlessly with all types of files and hi-res. Better than any
USB external drive. Gives wired and wireless capability, File transfer,
tagging and other functions are faster. Integration with home network
is better than with external USB drive.

4. Windows based, so it gives me compatibility with lots of existing
software and lots of flexibility in terms of installing any program I
want on the server, etc.

5. If I decide to change operating system, dump the Squeezebox system,
or go to VortexBox software, no problem: I just convert server to setup
I want.

6. I also have my server setup to automatically rip bit perfect copies
of CDs and tag them on insertion to drive (like VortexBox).

7. I have enough storage capacity on server to act as Backup for my
main (non music server), and to do double backup of my ripped music
files on second hard drive.

None of these reasons may appeal to you, but for me they they make
music server superior to Touch plus external HDD. However, I think the
Touch and an external HD are a very good solution in general, and
certainly more economical than the method I've chosen.

Mortslim-

We get it - you think hi-res files are a waste of time. Fine. Stop
beating us over the head with it.

BTW, your two citations are irrelevant. I don't listen to a full scale
live symphony orchestra at home, and if I could fit them into my 175sq
ft listening area it wouldn't sound good - especially live.

At home I listen to recorded music being reproduced for me, in my
particlular home environment. I don't care what the original quality of
the sound is or where it was recorded. Whatever the original is, I want
the best reproduction of it I can get and afford.

Have you ever wondered why studios may spend multiple thousands of
dollars transferring analogue tapes to 192/24? Acc'd to your reasoning,
they should never work at anything above 24/48; funny how they waste
their time and money using 24/192. Funny how lots of professional
musicians and recording people I've talked to enjoy hi-res production
and say it sounds more like the real thing.

And so what if I listen to a recording that's 95% produced at a level
of 24/48? I want superior reproduction of the other 5% also.

I admit, I haven't heard a lot of recorded music with res above 24/96;
so maybe super his-res is a waste of time. But I know professionals in
the field who love their 176k playback - and maybe they do hear
something worth listening to. Cite all the articles you want, it doesn't
matter - the ear test is what matters.

If you had been on this forum in the early 1980's, you would have been
the person telling us about all the science behind CDs and how their
reproduction is perfect - and you would have had articles to back you
up. Of course those that claimed that back then were wrong, they just
didn't know enough about either digital recording, reproduction, and
psycho-acoustics.

96khz/24bit), they are taken directly from the studio masters (either

digital or analogue tape) or direct from the DSD stream of the SACD.
They are all native high resolution recordings and are not up sampled.

If we find out that any of these albums are not native high resolution,

they are immediately taken off our site.

This obviously doesn't apply to the tracks that aren't labelled high
resolution. I think this is a pretty good answer. The main point is
that they aren't upsampling low resolution digital sources.
