  Hi,

xinit needs to gain ConsoleKit integration just like GDM has ConsoleKit
integration as more and more parts of the GNOME/FreeDesktop desktops are
relying on it to grant access to DBus services:
  /etc/dbus-1/system.d/bluetooth.conf:
  /etc/dbus-1/system.d/newprinternotification.conf:
  /etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-applet.conf:
  /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf:
  /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf:

There are some upstream patches which don't seem to work in all cases.

This is critical for UME as it launches the hildon-desktop via startx.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error message when there isn't enough free space--or provide an automatic tool for removal of old files

2018-08-11 Thread Tex Arcana
I just ran into this bug, tried a suggestion from here
(https://askubuntu.com/questions/89710/how-do-i-free-up-more-space-in-
boot) which resulted in multiple errors, and me being sent here.

It seems to me that this should be taken care of automatically by the
kernel with the upgrading process.

Terminal output of the above suggested method:

  removal of old files

Status in initramfs-tools:

Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

When installing a kernel, /boot may become full during execution of
post-installation script typically when update-initramfs is creating
or updating an initrd.img file. This is resulting in kernel
  installation error. For example:

  Setting up initramfs-tools (0.98.8ubuntu3) ...
  update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
  Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
  update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-generic

gzip: stdout: No space left on device
  E: mkinitramfs failure cpio 141 gzip 1
  update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-generic
  dpkg: error processing initramfs-tools (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

  Ideal behavior:

Give a more helpful error message when this unfortunate situation
occurs so that user can fix the broken system and keep it going.

  Workaround:

As the bug reporting system forwards user to this bug report, such
instructions can be given here:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1764965] Re: [Realtek ALC1220 ASUS PRIME X370] Recording is very slow and plays 10x faster

2018-08-11 Thread Andrii
I have the same problem and my board is MSI X370 Pro Carbon, (same
ALC1220 Chipset). Tried Kubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 18.04. Recording with
audacity also slow to the extreme. I changed sample rate in audacity to
51 or 52 Hz as a temporary workaround, but the sound is very
noisy.

Title:
[Realtek ALC1220 ASUS PRIME X370] Recording is very slow and plays 10x
  faster

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Recording applications (audacity, arecord, gnome-sound-recorder)
record extremely slowly (at what seems to be 0,1x speed), which means
that at playback the sound is played at a very high pitch and much
  faster than the original.

To help you understand the issue, I've attached an archive containing two
files recorded at the same time, one with arecord -f cd and the other with a
stand-alone Olympus recorder.
A video of Audacity's behavior when trying to record is also available:
https://youtu.be/Fe20eQNvZVA
Look at the seconds hand of the xclock and how much it is moving before
Audacity is done recording one second of audio.

  Things I've already tried:
  *  Purging and reinstalling Audacity
  * Purging and reinstalling Pulseaudio following the guide on the Ubuntu Wiki
  * Running audacity with this command: Exec=env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30
audacity as suggested on AskUbuntu
  * Reinstalling Ubuntu on a new hard disk
  * Running audacity on a live CD (in Ubuntu version 16.04.3, 17.10.1, 18.04
daily and Xubuntu 17.10.1, 18.04)

The machine is a Ryzen 5 1600 with an ASUS X370 Prime motherboard.

The problem can be reproduced as follows:

  * Boot a live DVD of Ubuntu/Xubuntu 16.04.3, 17.10.1, 18.04 (versions I've
tested with)
  * Install audacity via the terminal
  * Start recording, microphone is connected to the rear microphone jack.

Title:
Volume control doesn't work automatically when connecting Bluetooth
  device.

Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
When I connect a Bluetooth device, sound is automatically forwarded to
the device but volume controls still control the internal sound card
device. I must open the sound settings and click on the Bluetooth
output device to use volume controls.

I wish that the volume controls would automatically control whatever
output device is actually active. :)

This bug has existed for many versions of Ubuntu now.

Bug description:
When I connect a Bluetooth device, sound is automatically forwarded to

Title:
Cannot add printer attached to another PC in network

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
All 3 PCs in my simple home network run Precise & are peers (i.e. no
server). A printer is attached to a desktop by usb cable. I cannot
successfully add this printer to laptop. If I try the standard GUI
(for Printing called from Settings GUI), it allows me to to find it
(as 192.168.1.2:631) but when I select the make & model, it says CUPS
  error "client-error-not-possible". When I use CUPS (i.e. localhost:631
in Firefox & select 'Add a printer'), it allows me to do it but it
then says 'not responding' when I try to print to it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1786625] Re: "find" command throws nonsense error message

2018-08-11 Thread teo1978
It's funny that when creating the bug report there was a choice for the package
to report against:
- linux
- I don't know.

I chose "I don't know", but it has been assigned to linux allthesame.
Brilliant.

** Also affects: findutils (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** No longer affects: linux (Ubuntu)

Title:
"find" command throws nonsense error message

Status in findutils package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Run this command from a terminal:
  $ find . -name *.txt

  Expected result:
It should list all the files found in the current directory or any descendant
directory whose name ends in ".txt". It may or may not find matching files,
depending on whether there are or there aren't.
If there's something wrong in my command, then it should ALWAYS consistently
issue a sensible error message explaining what's wrong with my command, and
that should happen regardless of the contents of the current directory.

  Observed results:
If there are no .txt files to be found, it behaves as expected (i.e., no
results, no error message).
If there are files ending in .txt, sometimes it behaves as expected, showing
the results.

If, however, there are files ending in ".txt" with dashes ("-") or spaces ("
") in the filename, AND there is more than one file that matches the criteria,
then it displays this completely nonsensical error message:

find: paths must precede expression: .txt
  Usage: find [-H] [-L] [-P] [-Olevel] [-D
help|tree|search|stat|rates|opt|exec|time] [path...] [expression]

where "X.txt" is an actual filename of a matching file.

For example, this will reproduce the issue:

  $ echo "lalala" > aaa.txt
  $ echo "lololo" > foo-bar.txt
  $ find . -name *.txt
find: paths must precede expression: foo-bar.txt
  Usage: find [-H] [-L] [-P] [-Olevel] [-D
help|tree|search|stat|rates|opt|exec|time] [path...] [expression]

Title:
Ubuntu cups printer on Ricoh MP C2501 non-stop multiple copy printing

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I just made a two-copy print in Ubuntu 12.04 using Libreoffice and a
pdf document in document viewer on the Ricoh MP C2501 connected to our
local network and there were no problems.

However, since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, in the last month or so, if
more than one copy of a document is specified in, for example
Libreoffice, document viewer, the Gimp or any other software, the
Ricoh MP C2501 does not stop printing even when it reaches the number
  of copies specified.

In other words, if two copies are specified, the printing will not
stop until the printer is forcibly shut down. This happens in multiple
versions of Ubuntu 12.10, that is, including Lubuntu 12.10 and Linux
  Mint 14.

I suspect the latest version of cups because when Ubuntu 12.10 was
initially installed there were no problems with multiple-copy
printing. Non-stop printing of mulitple copies appeared only in the
last month or so --- at most two months. There is no problem with
  single-copy printing.

I just finished testing with Ubuntu 12.04 and there is no problem.

  Please look into this. Thanks.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1786617] Re: setupterm doesn't find terminfo entry in non-standard database location

2018-08-11 Thread Thomas Dickey
Looking at kitty's source, it appears that
kitty's install copies a compiled binary terminfo
rather than using the tic utility.
As such, it's not an ncurses bug.

** Changed in: ncurses (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

Title:
setupterm doesn't find terminfo entry in non-standard database
  location

Status in ncurses package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
My terminal emulator (Kitty) installs its terminfo entry to:

  /usr/local/lib/kitty/terminfo/x/xterm-kitty

But it also registers /usr/local/lib/kitty/terminfo/ as a terminfo
  database:

  % infocmp -D
  /usr/local/lib/kitty/terminfo
  /etc/terminfo
  /lib/terminfo
  /usr/share/terminfo

I use tmux, which uses setupterm:
  https://github.com/tmux/tmux/blob/b2a2c3a1e90756313b6709905f189934123f85ed
  /tty-term.c#L412

setupterm sets an error code unless I symlink the terminfo def to a
  traditional location:

  sudo ln -s /usr/local/lib/kitty/terminfo/x/xterm-kitty
  /usr/share/terminfo/x/xterm-kitty

This stops the problem. setupterm is presumably not searching all
  database locations.

I am not the developer of tmux, he directed me here to log the issue.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1786617] [NEW] setupterm doesn't find terminfo entry in non-standard database location

2018-08-11 Thread zeorin
Public bug reported:

My terminal emulator (Kitty) installs its terminfo entry to:

/usr/local/lib/kitty/terminfo/x/xterm-kitty

But it also registers /usr/local/lib/kitty/terminfo/ as a terminfo
database:

% infocmp -D
/usr/local/lib/kitty/terminfo
/etc/terminfo
/lib/terminfo
/usr/share/terminfo

I use tmux, which uses setupterm:
https://github.com/tmux/tmux/blob/b2a2c3a1e90756313b6709905f189934123f85ed
/tty-term.c#L412

setupterm sets an error code unless I symlink the terminfo def to a
traditional location:

sudo ln -s /usr/local/lib/kitty/terminfo/x/xterm-kitty
/usr/share/terminfo/x/xterm-kitty

This stops the problem. setupterm is presumably not searching all
database locations.

I am not the developer of tmux, he directed me here to log the issue.

See https://github.com/tmux/tmux/issues/1433 for the original bug
report.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1607891] Re: X doesn't start with r128 driver (PowerMac 3, 1) [powerpc]

launching Xorg fails with the r128 driver.

It seems that newer versions of the r128 xorg driver need to
allocate more memory than the video card actually have
(in my case, on a Powerbook G3 Pismo, an ATI RAGE with 8MB).

Setting 'Option "NoAccel" "True"' in xorg.conf did not helped.

Reducing the color depth 'DefaultDepth 16' kind of helped.
The X server starts but it only displays garbage (last video buffer
from the tty slowly becoming white).

The amount of memory it tries to allocate by default is usually higher,
yes. This is because the modes come from RandR which has more capable
cards in mind. However, it should be easy to pick a smaller resolution
in xorg.conf just like you picked a smaller color depth. Hopefully that
can get it back to the same memory consumption that it had before.

I just discovered this approx. same issue on my Powermac 3,1 while
running U-MATE Xenial for PPC when I added the "proper" r128 video
driver. After doing that I can see some log files and comments while
the system boots, but arriving at what should be the splash . . . is now
a blackish screen.

With the original install a few months back I think the installer picked
"fbdevhw" as the driver and generally the display was good resolution.
However, the log in screen had issues with low resolution background
image, so I filed a bug report launchpad #1541082. A few days ago
someone actually tried to help troubleshoot the problem and suggested
that for my video card, the ATI Rage 128 Pro card, the driver should be
"r128" . . . unfortunately after I installed that driver "X" was gone.
I am able to get to a TTY to do stuff, but, as of today I haven't had a
chance to get an xorg.conf file set up to see if I can change the driver
to something else . . . just reporting the problem that occurred with
r128.

An xorg.conf is required to use this driver, especially with powerpc.
See comment 7 of bug 91421. Hopefully it will work if you make Section
"Screen" and SubSection "Display" that lists reasonable resolutions.

Thread unsafe access to internal linked list, breaks Origin games in
  Wine

Status in xlibs:
  Unknown
Status in libx11 package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In file src/xlibi18n/lcConv.c the following linked list head is
  defined

  static XlcConverterList conv_list = NULL;

Which is then modified by _XlcSetConverter and get_converter in a non
thread-safe manner. Inside get_converter the list is reorderder to
increase the efficiency of looking up the same element the next time,
but this is especially dangerous since a seemingly read-only method is
  actually modifying the data.

Modifying the list in such thread unsafe manner does case the list to
become garbled in some workloads and causes infinite loops when the
get_converter is invoked. The solution I suggest is to add a mutex or
spinlock around accesses to the linked list, I would it myself but I'm
not sure about what is the usual mutex implementation for this
  project.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1062534]

2018-08-11 Thread Pavel Řezníček
Appended two patches from Alessandro Pignotti originally posted on the
Ubuntu Bugzilla. They may or may not still be valid.

According to Alessandro's words, "They should be considered hacks to
make the problem more clear."

Trying to attract some attention to this bug because I face it on a
regular basis playing Lord of the Rings Online on Wine still after 5
years a patch has been proposed.

I'm a bit experienced in programming but only in Pascal and Python so
I'm trying to find someone more experienced who could possibly fix it.
If nobody responds, maybe I'll try to fix it myself…

sreeragam,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some
time ago and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.
Your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates.

It would help us a lot if you could test on a currently supported Ubuntu

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1129941] Re: Ubuntu cups printer on Ricoh MP C2501 non-stop multiple copy printing

2018-08-11 Thread Orionds
You're welcome. Pleased to be able to assist with the development of
Linux.

Since reporting this bug, we have upgraded to the newer versions of
Xubuntu and consequently the cups package that comes with them.

I am happy to confirm that the bug has not resurfaced.

Thank you for your help.

Title:
Ubuntu cups printer on Ricoh MP C2501 non-stop multiple copy printing

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Thanks.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1785475] Re: Scrolling in files gives display isues

2018-08-11 Thread Benno Schulenberg
The bug *seemingly* affects three people: the reporter (you), one person
who was clearly a fake, and one other person "confirmed" it by clicking
that he/she is affected too. But an anonymous person whom I can't ask
questions doesn't count as confirmation for me. And most likely that
anonymous person is a sockpuppet too, because confirming a report so
soon after it was filed...

As I said: run 'stty size' on your terminal, and paste the output.

When setting LANG=C, I still cannot reproduce the effect that you see.

What did you change LANG into to "fix" the problem?

So... in fact there is no problem? It was just an anomaly in your
setup, as I suspected?

You saw the effect on new installs of Ubuntu 18.04 server. Can you make
a fresh install (on a random, free partition) and take note of the
choices that you make? So that I stand a chance of reproducing your
environment.

Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1127469] Re: error when uninstalled "Reactivate HP LaserJet 1018/1020 after reloading paper" in ubuntu software center

2018-08-11 Thread Nichlas
I'm sorry. While I still have the printer it's not in use any more.

I no longer have the VAIO laptop I got the error on. It had many many
issues with running Linux so I completely gave up on it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1102282] Re: Image OMITTED from pdf printed with lpr (works with acroread)

2018-08-11 Thread jimav
I no longer have a postscript printer, so don't know if this is still a
problem.

Since nobody else reported this, I guess it's best to close as invalid.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1786574] Re: remove i2c-i801 from blacklist

The real bug should not be bug #10306, but is bug #16602.

also there is a similar bug:

Bug description:
Touchpad of Yoda2 doesn't work well via PS/2 mode, most time the data is
  lost sync via PS/2.

I have made a patch in upstream/Ubuntu 4.15/4.13 kernels to force
  touchpad using SMBus mode.
SMBus mode requires i2c-i801 kernel module which is in modprobe
blacklist in Ubuntu 18.04/16.04. User has to remove i2c-i801 manually.

i2c-i801 in blacklist is a very old workaround to fix HP compaq nc6000
(Bug #10306), this module should be removed from blacklist.
