[Trisquel-users] New Abrowser/Firefox extension for faster searches - Ecphoneme
Hey free software users, I'm proud to announce my first Abrowser/Firefox add-on - Ecphoneme. It was inspired by DuckDuckGo !bang commands. It allows you to search websites directly with few extra keywords, but without DuckDuckGo. For example: !sp search with startpage !spi search startpage images !d search with duckduckgo !w search wikipedia and so no. For a first release it supports a limited amount of websites that I (might) use, but part of the roadmap for the next releases is to add more websites. It is of course free software licensed under the terms of the GNU Affero GPL version 3 or later. As usual, any feedback is welcomed. The fact that there are developers that work in their spare (hm, hm spare) time does not mean that free software should be developed only that way. Free software is not free of cost. Free software developers dedicating their time entirely on free software development must be supported financially. They have to pay their bills after all. There are several sub projects in MediaGoblin in this campaign that would take some time to be analyzed, implemented, tested and bug-fixed. That takes time during which the developers would need money to live. Some of the tasks are complex matter. time * payment = total amount for living Some of the big projects have financial support that is just not so obvious. I don't get it why proprietary software can cost a lot of money while when such an important free software project makes a campaign and will probably will prove how the money were spent, some people start to ask questions. I'm glad to see a less-obvious project make an effort to raise funds for itself. I know it is especially difficult to do when your users don't normally even download or visit. There are so many projects that get forgotten because the codes distributed as part of a distribution and the user never has to visit the projects site. There just isn't an opportunity to seek donations from the user base. That is generaly true, but I don't think it is the case with Linterna Magica. I'm not aware of any distribution that has it in its repositories. I think it would be great if (particularly with a bigger distribution) some of the larger distributions were more proactive in requesting funds on behalf of non-obvious projects like Linterna Mágica. I think we (ThinkPenguin) need to investigate being more proactive in seeking donations on behalf of projects that need funding. That is a great idea. [Trisquel-users] Say goodbye to NPAPI
It might be a late discovery, but still. Chrome(ium?) will phaseout NPAPI. [1] The part of the browser that loads external plugins to handle unknown file types. Although Chrome is proprietary software it will set the trend. Mozilla is also one step away from this, since last year's click-to-run feature for plugins. [2] What this means? The good thing – for certain Flash will be dead. The bad thing? Websites will stop using plugins. Older versions of the HTML specification will be unsupported (object tags requiring plugins, the ugly embed). All the browser video plugins will stop working. Video and audio in the browser window will be limited to the support internally in the browser. Add a limited support of carefully selected video formats and codecs to that in few proprietary browsers and you have the web locked down. For my project Linterna Mágica this means migration to HTML5 instead of browser video plugins. So far I'm not pleased with the internal video rendering of Abrowser (Firefox). Plugins are handling video better. This is serious attack on choice by proprietary software even when you don't use it. What do you think? YouTube is switching(ed?) to DASH [1] and since Abrowser (Forefox) still doesn't support it there are no such links. AFAIK only the YouTube flash player has such support and maybe the Chromium(copyright issues)/Chrome (proprietary). It was reported to me. I had no time to play with it. Even the test videos on your website does work flawlessly without it. You mean that they work without Linterna Mágica or what? The raw clips are there to test and prove that there is a video plugin. Thy should work without LM. The rest is mockup of flash objects as some websites implement them. The idea there is to test that Linterna Mágica works at all and to see what you should expect on other websites. Was this helpful? I tested Linterna Magica amongst other plugins, and I can categorize it as a bloat (no offense here). No offense taken. There are issues with web sites that have a lot of JavaScript that Linterna Mágica is trying to parse to find videos. The latest version (1.20) has a fix for that - Linterna Mágica have to be started manually (the parser) on most websites to prevent bloating. Few major video sharing websites start automatically, and the list can be extended. I'll be glad go have some more feedback, if you are willing to try it again. Feedback from anyone is welcomed. Especially negative. This will lead to improvements. Write to me in person, at Linterna Mágica's mailing list, or join Linterna Mágica's Jabber and IRC chat rooms. Personally for YouTube, I'm using SMTube which technically does what your plugin, except that it does it without the need for a web browser. There were such scripts even before Linterna Mágica. I'm just too lazy and tired of copying links across browsers, windows, and scripts. Still they are a good solution. (YouTube automatically switches from 360p to 720p for better visual quality), There is no technical way to do this at the moment with a browser video plugin as far as I know. and most importantly, that I need to move the mouse cursor every ten minutes, 'cause the screen is going to dim. You could change your dimming preferences in you desktop environment. Also most players have settings for that. So basically your extension is just an eyecandy for a marginal userbase, or for those whose into these things (unfortunatelly, I'm not). I could not agree with that. It has much more than eyecandy and it works in far more places than YouTube. Places I don't know exists. Yes, everyone has their preferences how to use their computer. That is understandable. Yes the technical solution is not the best, it is limited and causes some inconvenience. I just don't have the spare time to investigate, test and migrate to a better and improved solution - browser extensions. Linterna Mágica is not an extension in the context of Abrowser. It is just a userscript and it has its limitations just because of that. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Modesetting often works, while there are driver bugs that might lead to a black screen or errors on suspend/resume. Recently I've tested version 3.12 of the Linux kernel on Debian testing with another card – Radeon HD 6310. It seems completely useless with free software as the non-free firmware is required for modesetting. Without modesetting the card starts in vesa mode. For the little time I had to dedicate to the issue it seemed that the driver refuses to load at all without the non-free firmware. I found information on the Internet that there are other such AMD cards. I had no time to investigate if this is going to be fixed or introduced for all AMD cards in newer kernels. It might be coincidence with the unusable nature of Debian testing, but the 6310 is not stable and usable … no matter the firmware and the mode the kernel starts it in. My point is that some AMD cards might be unusable at all with free software even for 2D. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

If any of you has some more detailed infos on how to proceed will be very helpful I haven't done it for the x60, though that was the idea when I bought the laptop. Lack of time and too many tasks. :/ I've flashed Coreboot on a desktop motherboard, where there is one advantage - the flash chip can be replaced (in some cases). Basically, Coreboot has a sister project which is a general purpose flash ( EEPROM) chip programmer. You have to use it to install Coreboot. It communicates with the flash/BIOS chip over a system bus from GNU/Linux. The procedure describes how to change flashrom source code to work-around the proprietary BIOS restrictions which prevents BIOS flashing on the entire chip. It seems the modification is flash chip specific. The proprietary BIOS is read from the chip for backup (recovery if necessary). The Coreboot image is prepared and the flash chip is programmed with the special image. When Coreboot is flashed and the laptop boots, the entire chip is reprogrammed. This procedure uses the internal system bus for programming. If an external programmer and a SO-8 IC clip mentioned in the recovery section is used, the modifications should not be needed. The external programmer approach is more complicated. If you need more help, I would be glad to help. You can also find me on the Trisquel IRC channel as thedreamer. Since the quoted text looks like a copy of my message, I feel obligated to reply. Dual booting is essential from a newcomer's point of view, but that does not mean people here should help fix that in all cases. It depends on the situation, how much damage it would do and on everybody to decide can he/she help. The general rule is to not help at all with proprietary software. Excluding few who try to actively promote non-free software and justify it, even in this free software community people have different tolerance to proprietary software related problems as shades of dark as they might look to outsiders and newcomers. There are grey areas and compromises which might or might not bring another person to free software. The bad thing with compromises with proprietary software is that after a few they start adding up exponentially. This is a free software only community and distribution. Not linux, not open source, not proprietary drivers/blobs/firmware, not but it works for me I need it I don't care about licenses help me etc. etc. The majority of the people here want full control on their hardware and software. Using, recommending and helping with proprietary software is not an option and will never be here. If it is someday, it means the community failed. Still everybody is free to do whatever he/she wants with his computer and on his own, including running and using proprietary software, if the user still believes he/she needs it. But help for proprietary software should not be expect here. The general user that does not use specialized software does not really need proprietary software. It is all habits, fear of change, awkwardness with the transition and the new environment. I've been there, believe me. There was nobody to help me, I've managed it on my own by reading manuals and tutorials. You claim the community here is not helping newcomers. The open source and so called Linux community was not helpful at all to me - reticule, go read the manual newbie. On the contrary the free software and GNU(/Linux) one always was. People here are friendly and help as much as they can. If there are people here that think it is normal to help with proprietary software they are free to do it off the list/forum. No one can stop them. Doing it on the list is kind of trolling. Newcomers should be helped as much as possible, especially with information why one should use only free software, but helping at any cost with proprietary software is too much to ask. Helping users bring their proprietary software and habits into a free software distribution would solve nothing. You cannot help someone that does not want help. Freedom and free software cannot be forced to people. It must be their choice. If they are not willing to give up proprietary software this community and distribution probably is not for them and could not help them. Such users will always see the short term convenience and technical benefits (if any) in proprietary software. When they say I am running trisquel but I will get fired if I don't get this work done by tomorrow and need a piece of proprietary software to run, can you guys help me out please?? they are flamed and take the quit your job, work at a factory, be free speech. Before his last message nobody knew, neither that this was his first attempt to use free software or GNU/Linux distribution. As for the mistreatment… a newcomer could always feel mistreated in a new community, because he/she is not familiar with its ways. This thread developed on the 31st of December until 1st of January when it is known fact that most people are probably doing something else than using a computer and reading mail and forum messages. I've seen something similar last year as a part of educational project in a high school. GNU/Linux was installed side by side to some version of Windows, which wasn't able to boot. The problem was in the NTFS partition that Windows used. We were able fix it from GNU/Linux by running some NTFS-related utilities. I assume (I forgot) they were the ntfsfix and ntfsck programs coming from the ntfs-3g package. If that is the case, you probably can't mount the NTFS partition on GNU/Linux. Assuming the device is sda and the Windows partition is the first one: sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda12048 409599 203776 86 NTFS volume set ... sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt _Some error_ or sudo ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt _Some error_ If it mounts, unmount the partition with: sudo umount /mnt If there is no error you can still try to fix the partition with ntfsfix. Try the dry-run first. sudo ntfsfix -n /dev/sda1 If there is nothing scary looking, execute the command without the -n option. sudo ntfsfix /dev/sda1 Try the ntfsck program as well sudo ntfsck /dev/sda1 Reboot. The following is my opinion for RPM based systems and might or might not be true and objective. I've done my best to be objective. Don't start an argument with me unless what you have to say has some use for the others on the mailing list. I'll try to keep it quiet. RPM based systems are damn awkward, to put it mildly. I've used the following distributions for a desktop in the past, so I think I have some objective judgement: * Red Hat 6x - few months (absolute max 1 year) * Slackware - 1-2 years * Gentoo - around 2 years+ * Debian - around 4 years+ (still at work) * Trisquel - since 2010 till now Currently I work for a startup cloud provider based on OpenStack (Apache 2 licensed free software), [1] so I've seen a lot of things on different distributions with real life problems. *Technically* there is nothing better than Debian(-based) system: * number of available packages * supported architectures * long term support * ease of setup and administration * package dependencies * consistency * upgradable to newer versions ... Ubuntu as an exception has its quirks, but that is a totally different story. RPM based systems are awful. Last year and a half I had to administer CentOS distributions at work and it was just a nightmare. Finally they were migrated to a real operating system. The following is a little (non-complete) list of the usual problems that will be encountered with RPM based distributions: * Network configuration is split into at least 3 files. * Configuration files are mostly all capital - bad design; hard editing * Configurations in general reside in a non-trivial place (/etc/sysconfig/). * As far as I remember /etc/hostname is at all missing or not used. (Missing/incorrect hostname is a huge problem) * Kernels in latest versions of CentOS are still 2.6.something.; Might not be a problem with latest Linux-Libre. * An additional repository (EPEL) provided by Fedora have to be added manually for extra packages, which sometimes are essential. * Switching to superuser does not provide the extra */sbin paths unless a special extra option is provided. * Limited text mode installer - (not limited to) no custom partitioning. * Different init system * missing rc.local in newer versions (RPM-based in general); yes yes, who needs it, but sometimes it is essential for non-trivial stuff * some system command line tools are different, but that is somewhat normal - software installation, services startup setup, system users and group names These might seem as little things, but when they sum up, for daily usage it just does not work. Fedora is quite the opposite of CentOS - they are bleeding edge. My experience with Fedora is limited compared to CentOS, but I've noticed it has some(all?!) of the awkwardness of CentOS. An RPM based system is your enemy, if you have to use the command line. It doesn't help you, it gets in your way. I guess it won't differ much for the desktop. The Fedora community is doing great job in supporting and improving free software, but RPM distributions... I don't know... I want something that actually works, spoils me, acts (almost) the same way every time and is dependable. Don't make things up. We know it is all about using the free (in terms of time and money) code, having monopoly of the improvements and talking about being competitive. The freedom of a project is admired and appreciated, referred to as cool by proprietary companies/developers, but improvements must be kept in their proprietary versions only. Because they say, they've invested time and money and they must protect their investment. That is partially true. What about the investment that lead to the free free software project that they based their work on? Hypocrisy and double standards. The full freedom of permissive licensing is an illusion. For just a few cycles it can become completely proprietary. Those are historical facts. Most of proprietary software based on free software is build upon permissive licenses - just because the license allows it. The GPL is restrictive to the full freedom just to keep the software available forever free (as in freedom). Sell me the air why don't you?! That is why software is important and why we need free software. Software cannot be measured in big and small terms. It can be small as a code base, but it might solve important tasks. Why do you care if someone makes a non-free fork of Node.js if you can always get the free version of it? If the proprietary version has useful technical improvements, the people most likely will prefer the proprietary version and it will became widespread. I'm trying to push some features out to the edge. When I was looking for top software that used the Affero GPLv3 license, StatusNet was one I could count on one hand and now that is being phased out. The source code is still available and free software. There might be a fork. Don't forget that most free software licenses have the clause without any warranty. ;) Maybe people like the StatusNet owner see the Apache license as a way to get more corporate support and put more money into his company, e14n. There is nothing wrong with getting more money. It depends on the means by which you achieve it. It will still be free software. The Apache 2.0 license is not as strict as the AGPL, so the public relies on the good intentions of the authors of the software released under the Apache 2.0 license. What will you do when Identi.ca goes away? Are you going to use Pump.io instead? The option to run your own node still exists. There are other services and free software that support the oStatus federation protocol that I've heard about, but haven't tested. Simply put, the main developer of a software package stops developing and supporting it, and starts a new one from scratch. The package could live on, but it depends on the public (users). After all that is one of the reasons why free software licenses exist. Somebody might fork it or continue develop it. В 05:02 +0100 на 31.10.2012 (ср), tegskywal...@hotmail.com написа: I still don't see the point in disabling JavaScript as it would break most sites. Because it gives control to the user to browse however he/she wants. One of the best practises in making websites is to make it so that it could be read in a text only browser and then style it with CSS and add all *additional* cool stuff via JavaScript. Stopping JavaScript could stop some annoying behaviour in a website that the programmers, the designers and the company which developed the website didn't realized. It greatly depends on the website and what it provides, but my observation is that on most websites people actually go to *read*. JavaScript is a universal language supported in all browsers and even Read The JavaScript Trap, if you haven't already. If you did, read it again. Exactly because it is a programming language and it is used for large web based programs lately is an issue from free software point of view. The other reasons are annoyance and inconvenience in websites delivered as they are. the archaic IE6 can play nice with JS frameworks like jQuery. That is proprietary software, no matter it was popular in its time. I don't know why you bring it up and why should we care about it. Microsoft themselves renounced from it and made a campaign to bring awareness and render it obsolete. The hardcore free software guys will do what they want anyways through extensions or modified browsers, but JavaScript should be left alone for everyone else. Stopping JavaScript from the core or with an extension achieves the same goal. Why not stop it from the core then? If there is an option to stop it, it is good for all. Who wants it will keep it, who doesn't will stop it. What should be the default is a topic for a long discussion. It is a shame that most JS doesn't have a license linked to it That is because by definition (copyrights law) most are proprietary software. It does not matter that the source might be provided (if not obfuscated) as a side effect of the JavaScript language. I'm excluding free software JavaScript libraries. The Epiphany extension I've mentioned for example came to life when I was still using Google search and they've introduced the annoying auto complete while you type. With that they made all links in the results wrapped inside a JavaScript function which broke the open-in-new-tab-on-middle-or-wheel-click functionality. I've wrote the extension merely because I needed a faster way to enable/disable the JavaScript engine on demand. There is always a reason to stop JavaScript. Sometimes the demand for such crazy features could come out of practical reasons only. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Th only thing I do not remember is did I used the default (text) or the expert (text) install. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

For Ubuntu I don't know, because I've never dealt with it. Trisquel as Ubuntu derivative is probably following its life cycle for security. I think I've read once that the security section in Trisquel is updated more often, but I can't link to the source and don't know did I really read that. I suspect it is. Anyone can point to or state the Trisquel policy about security repositories? The other thing is, if one updates Trisquel on every release, the chances are lower to have such issue fixed or not have it at all. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

I have to admit that, sometimes a lot of work could be done by a simple apt-get install, like the old (but always good) Debian taught us :D It is better to use aptitude install/uptade/safe-upgrade etc. etc. because it has better dependencies handling. AFAIK it is the recommended tool. It has an ncurses TUI when ran without arguments which is also powerful, but I prefer the interaction with arguments. I will install Trisquel and see what the performance looks like :D... The bad thing is the Hardware Compatibility... If I want to buy something like the Raspberry Pi, I would need to find another distribution that would work AFAIK the only non-free thing in the Raspberry PI is the video chipset, but I might be wrong. The other thing is that there is no ARM port in Trisquel. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

They know the library is one of the most popular and don't want the developers that use it to have legal issues. You are implying that using GPL code leads to legal issues. That is not true. The real issue in such cases is that the developers do not know the license requirements and/or do not inform the contractor/client/partner that they are using such code beforehand. This comes from the misconception that free and open source software is just code you can use however you want; it is code just waiting for you to take it and claim it yours. Well it is not. Yes, you are free to use it, but there is one condition - you should respect the license of the code you are using. So, please stop saying GPL is bad and leads to trouble for developers and people who are using it. The goal of free software (I'm concisely missing open source) is not mass-hysterical adoption, it is freedom for its users - users, developers or business, it does not matter. Yes some licenses give you the freedom to make proprietary software with them and might seem better, but the requirement of copyleft licenses to release your changes is better for the longer term. If all free and open source software was released under permissive license, there is a great possibility that proprietary versions with new features will emerge, which will cause the free software version to lack functionality. That on its turn will lead to more adoption of the proprietary clones. The free software version will fall behind in functionality and adoption and will became useless. And viola there is no free software no more. Everybody looses. In fact this is exactly what already happen during the Lisp era and just before Stalman decided to start the GNU project, if I remember correctly. Thanks to permissive licenses. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Very surprisingly my (sucky) thesis about Sage as a replacement for Matlab in higher education rose interest in the teachers on my school. Well done! You might have heard about it, but just FYI, Octave is another Free Software alternative to Matlab. It missed some functionality few years ago, but I've personally used it to do many projects in my university years. -Debian: Either stable or testing. The bad thing about stable is that it will be soon replaced with current testing version and hence not supported There is always upgrade. You edit /etc/apt/sources.list and replace the old stable release name with the new one. If stable is used instead of release name transition would probably be transparent. I do not remember did I encounter new stable release while I was on Debian. Next: sudo aptitude safe-upgrade sudo aptitude full-upgrade Of course it could break bad, but for that you should prepare a backup. The bad thing about testing version is that it is testing version and possibly not so secure. Not so sure about that. There are constant updates and security updates as well as far as I remember. I've spent almost two years on testing +unstable on a desktop machine and it broke badly only once. I think I've used testing for a server available on the Internet. If it is going to be stable soon, then I would expect it to have minor issues or no issues at all. Debian after all has very long cycle for marking something stable. -Ubuntu: Not an option for me for philosophical and technical reasons. I'm amazed Trisquel is relatively stable while it is based on Ubuntu. Trisquel: Toutatis is the only version of Trisquel to consider. However, Toutatis is not ready yet, and even though there might be no differences between packages on the server installation without X-server between Toutatis and ubuntu LTS, is it too risky to make the server of Toutatis at this point? Is there plans to support Toutatis for the same time as curernt Ubuntu LTS is to be supported? There is always upgrade. As in the Debian case I've mentioned above. A week or so ago I've upgraded a server from Taranis to Brigantia. Only two packages required hacking of dpk scripts to install and unblock the migration process. There were bug reports about those exact packages with proposed solutions. If I were you I would either install Brigantia and upgrade to Toutatis when released or install Toutatis and upgrade to the next release when available. And keep upgrading to every future available release. This theoretically should provide smooth transition and no breaking like in my case from Taranis to Brigantia. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
