Re: [Trisquel-users] X60 Libreboot Trisquel 7 Overheating
Here's some random thoughts on overheating. One bandaid might be the cpufreqd package. It allows you to monkey with cpu freq depending on circumstances like temperature, cpu usage and running programs. The manual page for cpufreqd.conf will get you started. Physically removing dust helps but opening laptops is a b*tch and probably that's by design... If you use a vacuum cleaner, be careful not to allow the fans to spin (too fast), it might damage their bearings. In a similar Captain Obvious vein removing unused hardware, kernel modules and programs helps. I guess a custom kernel might help at least a little bit even just by setting your CPU type instead of generic. Probably a kernel whiz could do wonders. It also might be possible to underclock/volt your CPU (in the BIOS) and GPU (for AMD cards, see package rovclock). I suggest NoScript for primarily freedom and security issues but it also helps here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Configuring Openbox
I use the tint2 panel and change backgrounds with nitrogen on openbox. Both are in the repos. To change the openbox menu, edit ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml
Re: [Trisquel-users] Configuring Openbox
There are many ways to install packages (apt-get, aptitude, synaptic) e.g.sudo apt-get install tint2 nitrogen You can edit the file with any text editor you prefer. (e.g. nano or leafpad) You might want to make a backup copy of it first.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How inconvenient freedom can be?
You should dislike proprietary applications for the same reasons you dislike proprietary operating systems. Instead of SPSS check out https://www.gnu.org/software/pspp/ Don't fear the terminal. But if you don't want to use it, you don't need to. Just expect to be limited by the boring GUIs. :) (graphical user interface)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should we abandon 'fortunes-ubuntu-server' package from Trisquel repos?
It certainly seems to have a lot of ubuntu and canonical related items so we probably should get rid of it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Absolute beginner Struggle
Hello there! It's hard to say what's wrong based on that. One easy solution would be to backup your important data and reinstall. If you're unsure what to backup, take your entire /home. If your system works badly, perhaps you could use the live CD or USB to make the backup as well.
Re: [Trisquel-users] A new ConnochaetOS release
- It still would be nice to get the FSF approval, but I don't think I will actively apply for one again How come?
Re: [Trisquel-users] No GUI and Backup Home through Terminal
I'm a bit confused, no GUI you say but then you talk about sidebar. Do you mean on another computer? You'll want to use the -r parameter for recursive. And then you need to specify /full/path/to/where/you/mounted/that/disk/ The easiest way is to use a live CD or USB to do the job. And if you have a separate /home partition (can't remember whether there is one by default) you might not even need to backup before reinstall, just choose another username. Having said that, now is always a great time to make backups.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Mouse dind't work ...
You didn't say whether you know that thing works. Looks like it's suggested that modprobe -r ehci_hcdmight help. Apparently it's a hardware problem. Note that this will retard all your USB port traffic from 2.0 to 1.x making them slower.

You forgot the .deb part of the file name. :) Welcome btw!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Need help with ClamTK GUI update.

Re: [Trisquel-users] problem with laptop keyboards
1) There at least used to be a way to make custom key bindings hidden somewhere in the system settings. (If that's gone we can use the xbindkeys command from the package with the same name) Once you find it you could install the xdotool package and bind up arrow to the command xdotool key Up (The other key names are unsurprisingly Down,Left and Right) 2) What's your output offind /sys -iname brightness
Re: [Trisquel-users] problem with laptop keyboards
They include the binary blobs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] problem with laptop keyboards
That ath9k is unrelated, not sure about the others. If you can change the brightness somehow e.g. a key binding do so and see if the contents of those 3 files changes. Then you could try changing the contents yourself to see if that changes brightness. (note that you can't sudo echo blabla file, you need to sudo sh -c 'echo blabla file')

Re: [Trisquel-users] Need help with ClamTK GUI update.
Well, packages depend on other packages, specific versions of. Usually all this is taken care by the package manager. So you need to figure out what versions of the required packages are needed. Then see if you can get those from the repository using the pacman. If not, then you'll have to get those from somewhere else.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Partition table suggested for installing three GNU/Linux systems
:) For solid state it should not matter. On the spinning disk I guess it depends on your usage pattern. Do you share partitions? Is the data of the most frequently used distro more important than the root of the least used distro? Do you hibernate? /boot is kinda tricky, if you hibernate often, you might not need a separate /boot on the faster part of the disk. And then it might make sense to put swap before your data. On the other hand if you don't hibernate a separate /boot might be a good idea and the otherwise rarely used swap probably could be at the end. Also if you wish to go partition crazy you could have a lot of partitions with different cluster size, file systems and file system mount options. And then it needs to be taken to account that many read/write operations are not sequential but random. (And beyond partitioning, there is RAID... ) Basically what you've been doing sounds good, root before data. If you really care, then you need to start measuring performance. It's an interesting subject and I'll be glad to learn more about it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] booting to console (no X)
It's good you didn't recommend doing that using bashrc because then every time one would open a terminal window (defaults to using bash) X server would get killed. It would work though if one used /etc/rc.local (that file is run with sh -e so it will not work if there is slightest mistake in it)

Re: [Trisquel-users] What are the dangers of using email?
Email is pretty risky itself but using google is much worse. They know who you are, what you like, who you associate with. And if you also use(d) other google services besides the email, they have a very complete picture of you. They probably know much more about you than your closest friends, relatives or spouse. When you get a large amount of information about a person, it's relatively easy to probably know things like, sexual preferences, income, health record, your political leanings. Also, it makes one more likely victim of identity theft. Most people think that because they're not spies or diplomats or even executives of large companies, they have little to hide online. Yet most of them don't live in glass houses and would object to you walking around their premises. And it's the little things you do that might turn out to be dangerous or even things that you are. One scary example is your ancestry, during the second World War in the 1940s in Germany it was not a great idea to have Jewish relatives, you probably ended in a death camp. Similarly at the same time being in the United States and having Japanese relatives got you in an internment camp. We've all seen on TV how detectives piece together puzzles of small unimportant seeming details. What happens online stays online, gets aggregated and sold, stolen, exposed. Different countries have different laws. Your next government might have radically different policies. What would you do if you knew the secrets of your competitor/enemy?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Partition table suggested for installing three GNU/Linux systems
All this is relevant for old fashioned spinning disks, modern solid state drives should have uniform performance. This should prove useful http://gparted.org/why-partition.php#improve-performance I.e. the speed is fastest at the edge. You can test the performance of your disk withsudo hdparm -t /dev/sda(replace sda if needed) This is the peak performance. Then to find out the worst performance usesudo hdparm -t --offset 123 /dev/sdawhere 123 is almost the max capacity (in GB) of your device. As hdparm manual page says, the difference should be about 2x.
Re: [Trisquel-users] libudev not found
This package seems to contain that file http://packages.trisquel.info/toutatis-updates/libudev0 . I don't know if you can install that in Belenos. Regarding your other issue. see [#12152]
Re: [Trisquel-users] New install for new Trisquel user
There is just one repository. It's divided in separate distributions (e.g. belenos, belenos-updates, belenos-security and belenos-backports). And mirrored around the world. Glad to hear things seem to be working.

That's really only half of the story as you're still leaking metadata. (who, when, how often...)
Re: [Trisquel-users] GRUB issues
You need the grub credentials. They're randomized at install and can be found at /etc/grub.d/01_PASSWORD There is only one version of Trisquel in that sense. (It's based a ubuntu LTS. There are some backports from newer non-LTS versions, like kernels and xserver.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Language installation ?
Hello, welcome and congratulations! A GNU/Linux distro is basically a collection of packages. You'll need to install some that contain Greek support. There are many ways to do so, probably the most intuitive being the Synaptic package manager. I guess these packages might be useful for you. (from http://packages.trisquel.info/search?keywords=greeksearchon=allsuite=belenossection=all) abrowser-locale-el (if you use abrowser, believe this is default web browser) icecat-locale-el (if you use icecat web browser) icedove-l10n-el (if you use icedove email) language-pack-gnome-el libreoffice-help-el libreoffice-l10n-el xfonts-efont-unicode xfonts-efont-unicode-ib fonts-gfs-artemisia fonts-gfs-bodoni-classic fonts-gfs-didot fonts-gfs-didot-classic Besides installing those packages, you can change the keyboard layout in System settings. (or whatever it's called in Trisquel 7) My mother uses Trisquel, so you'll do just fine! :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Microsoft was the biggest presence at a recent Linux conference in Washington. Your thoughts?
I guess a big part of it is fighting free software tooth and nail. They realized they can't win so they try to water the thing down to open source. What is implied are non-copyleft licenses or copyleft licenses that are incompatible with the GPL. And calling the operating system Linux.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Security Updates

Re: [Trisquel-users] New install for new Trisquel user
Yeah welcome! I think you'll find Trisquel a pretty great distro as a freedom lover. There is not too much documentation available but most ubuntu guides will work, just be careful if they suggest you install something outside of the repos. (Also the quality of many ubuntu guides ... varies.) Between debian and Trisquel in the family tree there's ubuntu which has decided to use systemd. So probably it will also end up in Trisquel. However new Trisquel versions are only released when ubuntu LTS versions come out so it will be a little while and things might change.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Security Updates
These reports would be much more useful if they contained information about *Trisquel version *the repositories used I'm on Tris 6 using the Dutch mirrors and the last updates came today.
[Trisquel-users] OFFTOPIC Launchy
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT If you know bash script, then you might find Launchy pretty useful. I know I did. Sure, there are bookmarklets but those are quite limited (which is a Good Thing™). Re: [Trisquel-users] OFFTOPIC Launchy
One example is to view images on (the brand new, even more user hostile) Flickr without using JavaScript. Another was watching images on another site which had a fairly strict bandwidth limit, fortunately their material was mirrored on internet archive wayback machine so I could get it from there. These were launchy + wget + sed and then fed back to the browser type of things. I'm sure a more imaginative fellow might come up with something more grand.

Re: [Trisquel-users] New to Trisquel :)
So we can end the wild goose chase around build-essential here... It would be much faster if we knew from beginning what you're trying to do. :) Packages depend on other packages. In order to find out what packages package A depends on you can use the commandapt-cache depends A Now, note that if A depends on B, B might depend on C, which might depend on D and E... some of those might already be installed. Try it a bit. So now you see it might be a quite large number of dependencies. And this is where apt-offline comes in. It'll do the heavy lifting for you.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Your privacy strategy/todo list for a minimal install
Here's my 2 cents ramble. So I'm trying to prepare a simple but complete todo list. This reminds me of a joke: I've read your manuscript and it was original and clever. However, the parts that were original were not clever and the parts that were clever were not original! I.e. you won't succeed in that. Security is a process, and a very complex process at that. I've read about the proper use of Tor, and Snowden's software list. I don't really know why Tails is worth it (besides being fully torrefied), but if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. Anonymity is tails' only professed value. Unfortunately freedom takes a backseat as tails uses e.g. the vanilla kernel. Also if I was a powerful spy actor I guess the binary blobs in Linux might be quite tempting. Linus really should man up and kick the blobs from the kernel... One issue with tor are the web browser extensions, e.g. you're more private browsing with Noscript, yet that will set you apart from the flock using the default tor browser without Noscript. Ditto all other security enhancing extensions... One horror story is Intel vPro/AMT. If the hardware is compromised no software can make it secure. Yet another of the hard challenges is our own behavior online. We can compromise ourselves in a million different ways online. That combined with an illusion of privacy can lead to nasty results. Paranoia is good but self-censorship should be avoided as far as possible... I guess one thing we all should do it fire up Wireshark and see and actively keep an eye on exactly what kind of traffic our machines are spewing. The hard work is to determine what's truly important. Indeed. It's a great subject to think about. Look forward to hearing replies from knowledgeable people.

Regarding the mouse behavior, goto powertop and find the tunable that controls the mouse. On my computer it seems to be Autosuspend for USB device USB Optical Mouse [3-2]. Hit enter to toggle that tunable and powertop shows you what it does when it disables it. You can put that command in rc.local after the auto tune command. (Or if you like to save more power, you can click a mouse button to wake it up. Looks like the default autosuspend time is 2 seconds but you can change it too.)

Re: [Trisquel-users] New to Trisquel :)
It's kinda assumed these days everybody has an internet connection. build-essential (note the dash and the lack of s at the end) is required for compiling packages from source, not for a simple install. I guess the documentation you've been following isn't too useful.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setup powertop --auto-tune at startup
Two things, first /etc/rc.local needs to be executablesudo chmod +x /etc/rc.local and you should use full paths, so replace powertop with the output ofwhich powertop

Re: [Trisquel-users] Change brightness file permission permanently
You can include the chown command to the system startup scripts that get run as root. The default runlevel is 2 and the related scripts are in /etc/rc2.d Read the README in that directory and go from there. Use one of the existing scripts as a template, or even just append the command to one of them.
