As far as I know, HandBrake entirely is free software. Are you affirming it is not the case of its Dolby Pro Logic II codec? If not, what issue are you referring to?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Vlc audio doesn't work.
I had the "seek sound missing bug" on Trisquel too. The same is not in Debian. May I recommend you my favorite video player? **smplayer**
[Trisquel-users] Vlc audio doesn't work.
Sometimes when playing a video file in vlc the audio stops working also when I seek the audio turns off from time to time. Soundcard: Intel 6 series/c200 series chipset family high definition audio controller(Rev 05) Restarting the same video in vlc fixes the problem but not always with seeking.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Vlc audio doesn't work.
Your soundcard is ok with free software. Some Trisquel users have the same as yours. https://h-node.org/soundcards/view/en/395/Intel-Corporation-6-Series-C200-Series-Chipset-Family-High-Definition-Audio-Controller--rev-05- It can also be your graphic card. This thing happened to me yesterday as I was watching a movie. This can depend of the encoding quality of your video or the format. Re-encoding the file can solve the problem.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Well, I don't know much about VirtualDub, but I recommend Handbrake.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Well... Denying to help a user of a non-free operating system, and knowing that the user came here to seek some advice on what software he should use to suit his needs, isn't really going to help the user to reach the goal of a completely free computing. Instead, we should take this moment to help him on using at least some free software, at least for now, and also explain to him why free software is needed. Besides, we must also tell him that if he needs further help or recommendation on using free software, he's welcome to ask us for that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Sorry, but the license for just one software doesn't really prove anything because the software could depend/recommend/suggest non-free software, or even worse: have some obfuscated source code.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Well, since he is asking for free software help, I don't think it's totally unwelcome. Maybe the troll hole would be a better place, but still...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Why? They need a user friendly way to do it, and handbrake is not what I consider user friendly. At least not compared to VirtualDub. You can basically do it with a couple of mouse clicks. And besides it runs very well in windows, having multiple "forks" for all needs. AND it's filters were simply A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! It's the one software piece I miss from windows. GNU/Linux is amazing but it could use a tool like VirtualDub. Sorry for the virtualdub-fanboy moment :P
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
What we can't do, however, is suggest/recommend/teach/install non-free software for the user. For example, if he were to ask us how to make a desktop shortcut on Windows, Fedora, OpenSUSE, SteamOS or whicever non-free operating system there is (hypothetically assuming that all this operating systems would be using some non-free desktop environment, which is not always the case, but anyway), then we must ask him to look for support on the appropriate community, and not here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Err... please don't ask for Windows help on a Trisquel forum! Unless your question is really "how do I get my video card running on Trisquel using libre drivers", it probably doesn't belong here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Hm... Well, I don't know that much about VirtualDub because there's no proof that it's actually free software. I have checked the Free Software Directory, Trisquel's repository (using the on-line search and the package manager), and Parabola's repository (using the on-line search), but I couldn't find it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Hum... maybe because it doesn't run in linux, so it would never be on linux distros repos...? http://www.virtualdub.org/ read the first line, GNU-GPL licensed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Well... I'm not judging whether it's free software or not based on which operating system it's compatible with. Anyway, we have two options here: * Consider VirtualDub as non-free software and stop recommending it, not because of the license, but because it depends on non-free software, and because it is not a reverse engineering effort of the very same dependency, and is not an effort to replace the very same dependency too. * Wait for the review of VirtualDub, and that way, since we need to wait for the review, we can't really recommend some software that we don't know whether it's free or not.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
It can't be included in Trisquel ADFENO, like I said... VirtualDub only runs on Windows! It won't work in GNU/Linux. It's the way the program works. You can have it in the repos, but it simply will not work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
I have to look if handbrake can handle the ripping of the VHS, or if I have to use the vendor own software... But the converting would be pretty much the same process. Could someone give me a format recommendation?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
I said: "I can´t find a way for getting the tv cards running, and the chinch to usb converter isn´t Linux compatible." I could try a Trisquel live DVD, but I don´t think, that it will work. I know the importance, but not the hardware developer. Ok, for distributed computing I don´t see it as bad as in other parts, but its still bad. I use non-free software only if needed or humanity/freesoftware profits from it. I especially asked about the format to use, since h.264 isn´t really a free format, or at least the next version is non-free.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Sorry, I know, I personal use almost only free software. That hardware needs windows, because those developers can barley develop windows driver, they don´t even try Linux driver (since most of them run on kernel level, they doesn’t have to do with the gnu tools), let alone free one. I´m as sad about that as you. I could ask if the tv-card from think penguin supports the needed thing (dvb-c and or cinch input (for digitalising vhs). On the other hand I don´t like e-waste so I would like tips. Btw. I don´t know how my father will react (and do the exchange stealthy would be very hard). Exchanging the digitalising hardware and os would be really easy. Btw. the drivers for the digitalising hardware is very bad, I had to downgrade and use an old version of that proprietary OS. I saw how important open standards are. I also saw how bad h.265 is, so I wanted to ask what format to use and what tool they should try, since "free video converter" (free as in free beer) is very easy but proprietary, buggy and limited. If you want to look at what I try to do for free software look at the attachment and I also try to (slowly) make a more free Boinc version.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
> handbrake is not what I consider user friendly. Really? I used Handbrake to rip every episode of Samurai Jack from the DVDs we have, and I found it to be very easy. At the very least, it was easy enough that the experience was uneventful. This was my first, and so far only, use of Handbrake. I don't know anything about ripping from VHS (I assume you need some kind of special equipment?), but I'd imagine it would be largely the same process, wouldn't it? Maybe even easier since you don't have to deal with chapters and whatnot.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Well, this software is written to run on windows, it uses the OS own way of dealing with video to work. So, it depends on windows to work. Does that make the software non-free? I don't think so. If I am writing a software and share the source code, with a license that gives you the right to: run the program; share the program; change the program; share the changed program; it is a free software, and the OS where it runs is irrelevant. If someone wants to change the software to run on another OS, he can because the software is free. For example, for a long time I used ONLY FLOSS programs in windows XP (later 7). I was not computing in freedom, but those programs were indeed free. I agree with you in the obfuscated code thing. IF it happens is a dangerous thing, and a malevolent action. However I don't know of any indication of that in this program. Of course I can't be sure.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Well then, we must send it to be reviewed. Tomorrow I'm filling the submission form. :D Hope for the best! :D Better yet: hope for the entry, once approved doesn't get remove due to a late discovery that it wouldn't be free software. :D
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Use virtualdub. Runs on windows, has lots of filters you can use and is very easy to use. This is what me and my father used a couple years ago to do that exact same thing: get vhs into computer and save as AVI files. You will need to find a tutorial on the web, but the software is very intuitive to use (my father is not very computer savvy and yet he was able to do it on his own). You will need and Xvid codec to encode the files. But it is very easy to use.
[Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
Hello we are saving vhs and sd Tv. I wanted to ask what converter tool (should keep original resolution) and what format I should choose. There are two requirements. 1. The tool must be easy to use, my parents aren’t that good in using a computer. 2. That tool must be windows compatible, I can´t find a way for getting the tv cards running, and the chinch to usb converter isn´t Linux compatible.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video/Audio format tipp for saving Vhs Videos and sd (pal) TV
The software would need to convert Mpeg2 and ts files (optionally h.246) in a better compression ratio.

[Trisquel-users] no audio
the following is not by me but by someone else using my account its asked on here as i don't have a ubuntu forums account and trisquel is ubuntu based so it would be just as relevant here I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running lubuntu 12.04 The audio has ceased working ever since I connected it to another amplifier in a demo room in an audio store. It worked while connected to my amplifier up to that point and on the store's amplifier but hasn't worked ever since I've re-connected it to my own amplifier. Why? I have ran alsamixer and the volume is at maximum it also dose not output to any speakers or headphones

Re: [Trisquel-users] no audio
As normal user in terminal (no sudo) type: aslamixer Select F6. Choose from drop-down list of options.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recording audio from my desktop
You should write in detail what you have done. That makes it easier to verify if you have not tried some settings or forgotten something. About audio recorder, have you tried all the settings? Have you read the INSTALL and README in the source code, and verified that all dependencies are installed? Isn't trisquel 6 an ubuntu 12 version? Have you tried the audio recorder pengolin or tahr version?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recording audio from my desktop
I found the pulseaudio-module-jack in synaptic package manager. What package is jack in the synaptic package manager?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recording audio from my desktop
qjackctl
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recording audio from my desktop
It doesn't work! No matter what program I use, PulseAudio Volume Control shows no level of input in the recording tab, and the resulting files are blank.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Recording audio from my desktop
Use the pulseaudio-module-jack and jack to route the system audio to system capture or audio recorder like audacity.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Recording audio from my desktop
First, I cannot answer your questions, I can give you some pieces of information. What I write, I tested on ubuntu. What are you looking for? The same as stereo mix in windows, that records all audio taking place on the computer? If you open your audio recording application and open pulse audio volume control. Go to 'recording' and press the button left to the speaker icon, you should get 2 options. 'Monitor of built in audio analog stereo' and 'built in audio analog stereo'. Select 'Monitor of …' and what comes out of your speakers, will be recorded. Watch this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSeINGM68A8 It appears that your microphone audio will be put into your speaker audio stream, and by that your microphone audio will be recorded by 'Monitor of …'. I do not like this solution, because you get your microphone audio out of your speakers. Make this search 'pavucontrol pactl load-module module-loopback' on youtube and you get some videos about the matter. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=search_videossearch_query=pavucontrol+pactl+load-module+module-loopbacksearch_sort=relevancesearch_category=0page= I tried to record skype calls using audacity and other applications. I could record speaker audio or microphone audio. Not both at the same time. I asked on forums. Got no usable answers. There is 'jack mixer', 'jackeq', 'alsamixergui', 'pulseaudiopreferences'. I do not remember what applications I tried. I searched 'pulse', 'alsa', 'sound' and 'audio' in the software center. Maybe they are able to record speaker and microphone, but I did not get it to work. Fx jitsi can record speaker and microphone audio. That means, it can be done. There is this website http://www.itnervecenter.com/content/quick-and-dirty-recording-stereo-mix-linux-box. I am not skilled to be able to use the instructions. If you find out, how to record microphone and speaker, please make a post. To me 'pulse audio volume control' lacks a stereo mix option. In general I do not grasp, why there is not an official gnulinux crowdfunding website. If somone had an idea for software to be made, a crowdfunding could be made, and if enough money would be gathered, anyone skilled could make the software and get the money. Fx there is no quality text to audio voice for gnulinux. Nobody makes it. I cannot make it. And probably would not without payment. Maybe a crowdfunding could get it made.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Recording audio from my desktop

[Trisquel-users] Recording audio from my desktop
I want to record whatever audio my computer is playing, and not by microphone. Tried VLC. Was too complicated. Probably wouldn't have worked anyway. Discovered there's an included application for this purpose, gnome-sound-recorder. It was junk. The World Wide Web agrees that it's junk. It did nothing. Installed recordmydesktop and its GUI. Recorded video, but not audio. Discovered that most tutorials said to change the input sound source in the Recording tab of Pavucontrol to Monitor Of. Did. Didn't work. Discovered that you have to change Default to Pulse in the advanced options menu of recordmydesktop. Did so. STILL DIDN'T FREAKING WORK. How in the name of your favourite deity am I supposed to record audio under Trisquel?

[Trisquel-users] Digital audio player with free MIDI support?
Rockbox supports MIDI, but only through a non-commerical plugin. Is there a player that can play it using a free plugin? Also, can MPlayer playback midi (VLC can using FluidSynth plugin)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Digital audio player with free MIDI support?
You can use TiMidity++.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Digital audio player with free MIDI support?
Thank you Magic Banana and Legimet. I am not interested in a touch based device just simple software to run on a handheld player such as an iPod or a Sansa device. My iPod already runs mostly free software as it runs Rockbox, however in order to playback MIDI there one needs to copy some non-commercial files which is not ideal. Regarding the MPlayer question: I asked it as that is the player I mostly use on my PC and would prefer to play MIDI files using that instead of VLC if possible.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
Re: [Trisquel-users] USB Audio
I can get all the music tools I need with Trisquel (probably most of same in Musix). I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to get the hardware to function with these existing tools. I have a headphone out that I can get into the system just fine, but headphone out/mic in mismatch as well as the muting thing make it a less than desirable setup.

Re: [Trisquel-users] HDMI audio output not working.
Hi, maybe is too late but just in case... I'm using Trisquel 6.0 (3.2.0-48-generic-pae) and I got HDMI sound output to work. 1. Go to System Settings-Sound 2. Select the Hardware tab 3. Click on the dropdown list (Profile) 4. Select Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output In step 4, that was what it worked for me. There are several options there. I haven't installed anything else from what it comes with the standard installation set. Just updated the system. Hope this will help. Regards, Daniel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] HDMI audio output not working.
Before kernels from non-official sources, one could try Linux-libre 3.5 by installing the package linux-generic-lts-belenos (and rebooting the computer).
Re: [Trisquel-users] HDMI audio output not working.
You could also check whether your sound card is compatible with free software. Take a peek at www.h-node.org. H-node a hardware database which aims to collect information about how well various devices like laptops, graphic cards and wifi cards work with free software. You can use it to find compatible hardware in the future. You can also contribute by reporting your hardware to it. If you manage to get your sound card working, please check if the card is reported as compatible or not and update the device entry if necessary with all the details about how did you managed to get it to work.
[Trisquel-users] HDMI audio output not working.
Hello! I've recently chosen to begin to learn GNU/Linux / Trisquel so please bear with me here since I'm a noob. I have a Geforce 210 gfx card through which I have connected to my monitor via HDMI output. The resolution is fine but, I don't have any sound. I went under the sound settings and the sound is on HDMI and is on but, still no sound is produced. Could you please tell me potential solutions to this problem and maybe explain to me why it's not working? I figure it has to do with the drivers and I have considered using the onboard audio output but I would really like to just use the sound through the card. Thanks in advance, Daniel
Re: [Trisquel-users] HDMI audio output not working.
I don't believe all systems support sound over HDMI although I might be thinking of something else. Not sure that is your problem here though. Are you sure the volume is up, and the device is not muted?
Re: [Trisquel-users] HDMI audio output not working.
See: http://trisquel.info/en/forum/hp-dc7800p-nvidia-geforce-210-always-switches-hdmi-sound-out-instead-integreated-audio Try to install alsamixer or pavucontrol. Or try the new Linux-libre versions (by default Trisquel 6 use Linux-libre 3.2 - LTS), currently the version is 3.8: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linux-libre/ppa $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install linux-libre $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade https://launchpad.net/~linux-libre/+archive/ppa http://jxself.org/linux-libre/
[Trisquel-users] Re : Audio and video with Instant Messaging
The connettore drop-down menu aims to select the input. The livello d'ingresso allows you to test it (just make some noise). I would try video calls from Pidgin to Pidgin. This is what I use and it works. I guess Epiphany to Epiphany should work as well.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Audio and video with Instant Messaging
Thank you for the correction.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Audio and video with Instant Messaging
Have you tried to modify things in the Output tab of the Sound settings? It is indeed very easy to get the latest linux-libre. Just use this repository (instructions on the page).

There's also the issue that AVIDemux isn't included in Trisquel's repositories as it is in Ubuntu's multiverse repository, whereas mkvmerge GUI, MP4Box are included and MediaInfo will be (it is included in the universe repository of Ubuntu 12.04).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
I wonder why no-one has mentioned the Swiss Army knive for Video editing named AVIDemux ? For me it is by far the best tool for any AV-releated work. All the tools named here are more or less complete suite for real video editing. For the pure purpose of extracting audio, doing hard cuts and so on AVIDemux is the best tool available.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
Whenever I try to open a video file containing H.264 video using AVIDemux I receive this message: H.264 detected If the file is using B-frames as reference it can lead to a crash or stuttering. Avidemux can use another mode which is safe but YOU WILL LOSE FRAME ACCURACY. Do you want to use that mode? In short, the software isn't designed for editing H.264 videos.

mkvmerge GUI seemed to work fine. But when the final mkv file was played in mplayer there was no sound or video. In VLC player there was sound but no video. I'm knocking this on the head and telling my friend to do it themselves! Thanks all for advice though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
Video editing can be tricky some times. Certain players don't like certain things.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
What format is the video and audio (e.g. open the file with MediaInfo)?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
Thanks for the walk through! I did notice that mkvmerge GUI provided details on what formats were in the container, I'll check tonight.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
I've been wondering if Novacut is going to live up to the hype.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
Kino was the first complete and free video editor for GNU/Linux that really worked well for the mere mortal. It is unconventional and dated. It was officially discontinued except for bug fixes in favor of a new more modern ground up design. OpenShot is the second video editor I'd recommend. I've attempted to use a lot of other video editors over the years and none seem to be stable enough. I've been told certain ones had improved greatly although every time I go to check em out again they seem to me to be terribly unstable still, have ugly interfaces, lack critical features, or similar.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
It does not look like that actually exists yet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
Simply drag both the audio and video tracks into mkvmerge GUI and select start muxing in the menu.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
Did manage to install Openshot before I left for work, didn't get a chance to use it. I've used Audacity to tinker with the audio and have that saved, looks like I just need a way of removing the original audio from the mp4 and adding in the saved audio. Many thanks for all the suggestions, will have a look at them tonight.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
mkvmerge GUI will demux the stream for you. Just drag both streams and select the appropriate streams for the new file.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
Thanks, will try it tonight.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
There's a PPA: https://launchpad.net/~novacut/+archive/stable
Re: [Trisquel-users] Video audio editing
Now I just wish I had some time to play with it. Maybe when we update the site!

Re: [Trisquel-users] No audio on Lemote R60
Hi Magic Banana, thanks for the link. Following the instructions, the audio worked fine for a few seconds, then overlapped a terrible whistle :-|
Re: [Trisquel-users] No audio on Lemote R60
Thanks Magic Banana, the lspci output, for audio section, is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
Re: [Trisquel-users] No audio on Lemote R60
Searching the Web, you find users that were having troubles on Ubuntu 10.04... but they should be fixed on more recent versions. Anyway, I guess it does not hurt to try the fix suggested by a developer in the 20th message of this thread: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/582199
Re: [Trisquel-users] No audio on Lemote R60
Ops, it's a Lenovo, not Lemote :-|
Re: [Trisquel-users] No audio on Lemote R60
Could you post the relevant line returned by the 'lspci' command. It should be something like that : 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 06)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Digital audio player and free software
I don't know of a digital player that does not lost its warranty if you install another firmware, but maybe you have to look for a player that is unbrickable. You can always go back to the original firmware and tell the store I don't know what happened! I can tell you of my own magnificient player in which rockbox can be installed that meet all your requirements. Plus it is affordable, superb sound quality and editor's choice in anythingbutipod.com, the Sandisk Sansa Clip+. * 8gb internal memory * ogg vorbis, flac and mp3 support * microsdhc slot, up to 16gb cards I think * radio * I'm sorry, no built-in speaker * oled screen * microsd standard For less the price of an ipod you can buy this player, a pair of great headphones (mine are the soundmagic pl50, extraordinary combo!) and maybe (I believe Fiio is a great brand). This player can be rockboxed, but I did not tested already. If search for info on this one in anythingbutipod.com, you will see its the best value for the money. I can assure it's true, superb listening experience (but only if you replace the stock earphones with something much better).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Digital audio player and free software
What about a Android device, its not all free software but most sources are open. It also supports sdcards and radio. If you live in America forget that, your android phones are too dongled^^

Re: [Trisquel-users] Digital audio player and free software
Thanks but I don't want a phone. A dedicated player is better as it has buttons that are optimized for music (such as iPod's wheel).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Intel audio noise
Hi aitux, Could you please tell me how that went for you? I was playing around with speex-float-3 yesterday and even that I noticed resulted in a lot of cpu usage, about 5% (on a core2duo 2.2 ghz) and that was causing static when I was playing a youtube video using swfdec. But dropping it to speex-float-1 like I had previously solved the issue. It seems to me that this is probably about the optimal point. Going for the highest setting I've heard can use up to 60% of the cpu and you won't notice the difference anyway. ___ Trisquel-users mailing list Trisquel-users@listas.trisquel.info http://listas.trisquel.info/mailman/listinfo/trisquel-users
