[U2] IBM PartnerWorld Gets Big Praise

2006-12-13 Thread rimshot

All,
We'll had a lot of discussion here about IBM's quality of
communication with all of us. I thought this piece from the eWeek
Channel Insider was worth repeating here:

An independent study of Vendor ISV programs put IBM's Partner World
Industry Networks atop a list of the top 10, besting rival Microsoft and
others in metrics measuring technical, sales and marketing enablement.

This is essentially what we do by running UV on a 2-node linux HA
cluster, but with the added benefit of real-time data replication.
We're running Steeleye's Lifekeeper software to manage the cluster. If
the primary node fails, the cluster software executes /etc/init.d/uv.rc
on the secondary node to start UV. Users access the servers via a
shared IP address that automatically moves to whichever node is active.
Steeleye's annual maintenance charge last year was $900, but I'm not
sure off the top of my head what we initially paid for the software.
There is also a Lifekeeper version for Windows, and there are quite a
few other commercial cluster options available for linux:

RE: [U2] UniVerse Personal Edition - Licensing

2006-12-13 Thread Dave Taylor
Bill,

I guess I missed the part about defunct software licenses.

If system failover/recovery is your goal, there are a number options open to
you depending on the recovery time you're willing to pay for - the faster
the recovery and the more complete the database, the more it costs.

The least expensive option is to simply install your production version of
Universe on a secondary machine without starting Universe on the secondary
machine (so that you're only running that one licensed version of Universe
on one machine at a time), configure it the same as your primary machine,
install a second network card with the IP address of your primary machine in
the secondary machine, reconnect your secondary machine to the network using
the second NIC card after your primary machine is shutdown and then restore
your last good backup on the secondary machine.

There are a number of other alternatives for maintaining a more up-to-date
database on your secondary machine, which are also more expensive.

Your current IBM U2 Business Partner should be able to assist you in these
areas.

If not, or if you don't have a relationship with an IBM U2 Business Partner,
we'll be glad to help.

Best regards,

Dave

The Knowledge Base is an expanding of documents from the U2 community to
assist new and experienced users.

- Incubator and Learning Pack
The Learning Pack is a new venture to develop a suite of demonstration
applications, white papers and guides to help encourage new users to
learn the U2 model.

The Incubator aims to create a prebuilt environment based on Personal
Editions complete with Learning Pack.

Re: [U2] UniVerse Personal Edition - Licensing

2006-12-13 Thread jpb
Not really. It does just what it was intended to do; for developing new
software, introduce new people to the environment, training, and for
personal use. It was not intended to be used in a corporate production
environment. Otherwise it wouldn't be free and would come with service.

U_MAXLIST: Number of attribute names in LIST = 999.
U_LINESZ:Page width in printing =272.
U_PARASIZE: Paragraph name and its parameter size = 256.
U_LPCMD: System spooler name = NT Spooler.
U_MAXPROMPT: Number of prompts allowed in paragraph = 60.
U_FSIZE: Dictionary field name size =31.
U_MAXVALUE: Number of values WHEN can handle = 10240.
U_MAXBYEXPVAL: Number of values BY.EXP can handle = 10240.
U_SENTLEN: Maximum sentence length = 9247.
U_PROCBUFSZ: Proc buffer size = 4095.
U_NIDES: Maximum number of virtual fields in query= 256.

You'll notice proc buffer size = 4095

Without getting into a long explanation of the proc buffer system,
though
it is tempting, just make sure the statement being executed isn't longer

than the proc buffer size.

Yon can create a file pointer to the directory holding the file, e.g.

Then read the dos file as a record.

If it is binary you will need to read/write from Basic using OpenSeq, ReadBlk

OpenSeq "c:\temp\myfile.dat" to FL Then
Status FStat from FL Else Null
   FileSize = FStat<6>
ReadBlk Block From FL, FileSize Else...
  CloseSeq FL

RE: [U2] UniVerse Personal Edition

Am I understanding that you are wanting to use Personal Edition in a
disaster recovery / standby mode?

I am trying to use Personal Edition as an emergency backup mode.

Are there any restrictions on say, the VOC file size?

Suggestions would be appreciated.

1. The path of source is actually buried at the bottom of the object
for basic programs, catalogued or not. The following example shows the
catalogued program, "*FSTAT", is from the BP in my home account,
/home_app/cds33896/BP/FSTAT.
I use an F-pointer to uv/catdir & Editor uparrow mode to see it:

>.L CATDIR

 CATDIR
001 F
002 /dbms/uv/catdir
003 ./D_TYPE19
>ED CATDIR *FSTAT
22 lines long.

2. Go to www.srs4uv.com and download for free the subroutine
"SRS.UV.HEADER". I like it.
Here's what the say about it, themselves:

"If you want to use the UniVerse Retrieve language with UniVerse BASIC
object code, download our SRS.UV.HEADER program. With this program you
can create I-Type descriptors that access the binary information in a
UniVerse BASIC object code header."

3. It's a bit tangential to what you're asking, but a U2UG Enhancement
Request for a tool to better manage program usage came out of the
October IBM conference. As I recall, it was the top vote getter in the
formal U2UG Enhancement session.
There is an an Enhancement Committee teleconference in about three
hours, so expect more details soon.

[U2] Managing open files

2006-12-13 Thread Susan Joslyn
Greetings group,

I have a problem at a new installation of PRC on a Unidata/Windows system.
There are a couple of occasions where I get an announcement that "too many
files" are open, and my program bombs. I think it's the combination of
files that the application software has open as well as the ones I have open
at that moment, plus SB+.

The most helpful thing for me would be some function that will tell me at
any given time how many files I have open and what files they are. I can't
find anything like that. I have ways that I can determine what files I have
open, and SB+ keeps a list of the ones it has open. But I don't know what
the limit is.

I guess I'm going to have to take the "known places" where this is occurring
(as they occur) and close all of my files that I don't need and hope it's
enough.

Anyone know of anything that will help me solve this problem? All advice
appreciated!

Cheers,
Susan Joslyn
p.s. I'm a digest subscriber so I'll either see responses later (which is
fine, I'm in no hurry) or you can copy me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if
you like.

[U2] The limit of PROCBUFSZ is reached

2006-12-13 Thread Joe Jamison
I posted this error to the forum back in June and never received a
response. So I am going to try this method. I am running UD 6.1 on HP-UX

Can anyone tell me what this message means and how to correct it? I am
getting this message when I try to run a report. "The limit of PROCBUFSZ
is reached".

Thank you,

Joe

Re: [U2] [UV] globally catalogued program

2006-12-13 Thread Mats Carlid

Boydell, Stuart skrev:

I was just trying to track down where a particular program in
GLOBAL.CATDIR came from and I'm wondering how others manage Globally
Catalogued verbs?
Are there normal tools like VLIST for them - and how can you easily
determine which program file and account a globally catalogued verb
emanates from?

 Yes and no,

MAKE.MAP.FILE ( takes an awful lot of time )

and then list &MAP&

The WHO column is the origin account ( first 8 chars only )
- or whatever IAM that might have been in effect.

The source file can be found in the GLOBAL.CATDIR *program record,
the last line shows the complete path to the file.
( It seems to be the source file from compile time.)

BTW even for 'normally' cataloged programs you need
to use the above technique to determine the source account
as you may catalog a program into another account by:

catalog file *otheraccount*program programsource

The result of this is identical to a normal catalog in otheraccount
except for what shows up in the origin column in the &MAP& file
and that no verb is created in any account.

The VLIST command doesn't work on GLOBAL.CATDIR
not even after you make a GLOBAL.CATDIR.O pointer to the
catalog directory.
