Granted, it could be legit but this just reeks of bait and switch tactics where they build up a list of potentials for a non-existent opportunity then use the info as direct contacts trying to pretend to have a personal history with you. [U2] Epicor and Eclipse Was Re: PICK Systems Administrator position
This is fascinating, although I primarily know these products from a distance. Am I correct that Epicor was UniData. Is it now Progress instead? Have customers moved from UniData to Progress? Was this previously Intuit Eclipse that runs on UniVerse? What DBMS will this new company favor? Does anyone have any more clues on this? --dawn On Wed, Apr 6, 2011 at 11:03 AM, Garry Smith gar...@charlesmcmurray.comwrote: Could be for our ex-var Activant Eclipse that just got re-sold to another equity investor. Yeah, I had the feeling some folks took the bait in that direction, particularly once they gave that oh-so-enticing option of SQL Server. I'm particularly amused by this line in the wikipedia page for Progress Progress Software maintains in house consultants to develop and launch its products. That sounds almost like the PeopleSoft model -- hire sales, outsource RD, although they seem to insource them instead. Sorry you have had to go this route due to what would seem to be a reasonable company decision to continue with the ERP vendor and migrate to their latest offering. I recall a time not too long ago when Epicor was from the top UniData VAR and Datatel was the 2nd. They now both have SQL Server offerings, although to date Datatel's still has UDT in the middle tier AFAIK. --dawn On Wed, Apr 6, 2011 at 11:51 AM, Barry Rogen bro...@pny.com wrote: Epicor has their package of the future which started as Vantage and is now just called Epicor 9. To purchase a Epicor U2 product you must first know it exists, then beg to buy it. (Unless you're an existing customer, then they will gladly sell you more copies) Development continues - but not nearly at the pace for when the U2 products were in active marketing driven development. Re: [U2] Epicor and Eclipse Was Re: PICK Systems Administratorposition
I don't usually contribute much to this forum - but I appreciate the chance to stay connected via the great posts here. In this case however, I do have some specific experience relative to this thread that might be beneficial to some. I've worked as a user, Epicor project manager/consultant, and independent ERP consultant since 1985 on several Dataworks/Interactive/Platinum/Epicor products including: DataFlo, Infoflo, and Avante (I've worked with Avante from the original release to the current version), and now Epicor 9. Relative to the Progress/SQL conversations: Epicor 9 can run on SQL or Progress, but our benchmark testing indicated much slower performance on a very beefy SQL machine. Processes, forms and reports were timed at 1/2 to 1/4 the speed that they run on an average Progress server. Additionally, Epicor wasted much of my customer's time claiming that the transition would be simple (it wasn't), and that SQL would be faster, or equal to Progress (it definitely wasn't). We gave up and stayed on Progress - but use SQL for our Replication Server. Regarding functionality - in my opinion Avante and DataFlo can still run circles around Epicor 9 in many applications - the E9 design and functionality is not as deep or well developed yet. However, it is getting most of Epicor's development resources and attention these days and is getting better quickly. I wouldn't advise most of my customers to make the leap yet (but maybe in a couple of years) from Avante/DataFlo to E9, but it was a natural evolution for my customer that was previously using Vista 8. In my opinion, the central benefit to E9 over Avante though is the ability to modify the functionality of the software without modifying the source code. They do this via Business Process Methods (BPM's) and Personalizations. Screen layout and fields are also very easy to modify. Extracting and presenting data is very straightforward and interfaces to MS products pretty seamlessly, in most cases users can perform extracts to Excel out of the box - no IT interface required. Sophisticated reports can be quickly and easily developed using E9's Business Activity Queries (BAQ's) and Dashboards. Both of which can be learned and used by anyone that could in the past use MS Access or some of Excel's advanced functions. This limits IT involvement to only very complex report solutions (which can also be done using BAQ's and Dashboards, but may take a little more time to develop). The most obvious advantage comparing Epicor 9 to Avante for the customers that I have worked with is that making changes to process functionality using Business Process Methods (BPM's) does not inhibit the company from taking EVERY patch or upgrade that is offered. NO KNITTING. The BPM's, BAQ's and Dashboards (custom reports) are easily moved from the previously installed version to the next. So, every time a new release comes out, IT does a quick 1-2 set-up and test, training is developed and implemented for new product functionality associated with the new release (usually less than one week), critical users exercise and test the new version in the Pilot account, then the upgrade/patch is rolled out. We can take advantage of new functionality and bug fixes almost immediately (usually within 2-5 business days of roll-out) without worrying about which modifications might be stepped on or deleted. Sometimes the Epicor 9 experience can be very frustrating, but we believe that Epicor is going in the right direction and within a couple of years E9 will probably match Avante and DataFlo in functionality. In spite of some of the pain associated with being part of the rollout of a new(ish) product, the IT departments at my customers are GLAD that they are on Epicor 9. Re: [U2] Epicor and Eclipse Was Re: PICKSystems Administratorposition
So am I. ;-) Spoiling Epicor's easy profit making scheme that is. Before I started my current job the company I work for was spending tens if not hundreds of thousands of Pounds on Epicor consulting and project management services every year. Now Epicor don't get a penny and even lost the revenue from UD support! They were stupid enough to tell management they would stop development of Avante after release 9.5 trying to sell them on Vantage. The result being that the company is now switching to an Oracle based ERP system from another vendor because Vantage didn't cut to the chase then and as you admitted yourself neither does E9. The main division is still running on Avante 9.2, though! Who needs Epicor RD or consultants costing £1000 a day if one decent in house MV developer can modify a SB+ based package quickly and at low cost to whatever the company needs? BTW I use IBM Cognos for dashboards, KPIs and reporting these days. Not just with data from Avante but also from Oracle and SQL Server. Exporting data to Excel is child's play with SB+ too and even the guys on the shop floor are doing it without the help from IT. And the best thing is it's not relational but U2! Re: [U2] Databasic conversion
Symeon, It depends on how old the software is. As long as you run UD in Pick flavour and you have the source code Basic code shouldn't be much of a problem. If it compiles it will most likely work the same. And if the dictionaries use A and F correlatives they should be fine too. Procs usually also work fine even though some user exits may not work. Paragraphs will need some work. Usually no big deal. Re: [U2] Databasic conversion
Symeon: I converted our application from D3 to UniData. There was quite a bit of work. I believe I started in Dec 2005 and finished at the end of March 2006 (I had to work a lot of overtime), and beta tested through Aug 2006. We went live with one our clients in Sep 2006 and then 10 more moved over in Nov and Dec 2006. I spent the next six months moving most of the rest of our clients to UniData. I'd say I spent about a thousand man hours on this. It could have been half that, but I had no help from anyone (including IBM/RS) except Colin Alfke in Canada. I have a lot of emails on this, but the following is one in particular. HTH, Bill - Original Message - *From:* Bill Haskett *To:* 'Bob Little' *Date:* 2/28/2006 6:29 AM *Subject:* Re: [U2] Changes to mail list configurations We're mostly done but have spent about 140 man-days. We spent a fair amount of our time grinding away with the line editor. We were constantly editing data, dictionaries, VOC entries, and BASIC programs. We were able to port a few utilities to UD to help (a TCL shell, a file listing program, a dictionary listing program, and a screen-scroll program). We feel that we could have saved about 30% of our time if there was a decent screen editor, as the productivity was extremely low with the stone age line editor (AE). This would have saved us about 40 man-days! We spent about 20% of our time messing around with moving D3 to UV to UD and all subsequent data moves. This would have saved us around 30 man-days. There weren't too many surprises but there were some. Here are the major ones: 1) There was absolutely no interest by IBM in helping us, 2) There were absolutely no utilities to assist in the conversion. When I consulted at a large UD user they had converted from Sequoia several years before and they said there were numerous utilities that converted their dictionaries and BASIC programs. These were unavailable to us. 3) We had to convert to UV first then to UD...well, not actually. We had to move our data to UV, convert the dictionaries, then move to UD. However, we eventually found a utility to restore a D3 account to UniData, which helped tremendously during our client upgrades. 4) There is no (or virtually no) security in U2. It's handled by the O/S. 5) There are no users in U2. They're managed by the O/S. 6) UD requires a lot more interaction with the O/S. For instance, since UD has no 'Q' pointers you have to create file pointers using environment variables. In Windows, this requires the creation of the environment variables on the server...very strange. 7) There is no backup facility in UD. 8) I-Descriptors don't apply to each value in a multi-valued field. One has to mange the multi-values as though the dbms was never designed to have multi-values. There are separate functions for multi-values and if one uses a called subroutine, the subroutine has to manage the multi-values and return an MV array back. There are also some peculiarities to UD (things you wouldn't believe). For instance: 1) COPY MYFILE '1''2''3' TO:(ANOTHERFILE ...sometimes doesn't work at all. COPY, BASIC, CATALOG, DELETE-LIST, and numerous other VERBS can't handle multiple items in the command line. You have to SELECT the items first before executing these verbs. 2) You can't create an account from within UD. You have to open a DOS window, create a directory, and execute a DOS command from within this new directory. 3) A new UD account has all kinds of new UD files created within the account. Not really a big deal but surprising. 4) Managing your TERM settings is difficult. 5) Some default settings are weird. For instance, when compiling a BASIC program it gets globally compiled and cataloged...like a new MV user wants this by default?! :-) 6) Items in the SAVEDLISTS file have a number appended to the end so one won't be able to manage these without using the ...LIST commands. For instance SAVE-LIST BILL ends up in the SAVEDLISTS file as BILL000. Some other things to expect: + SAVED LISTS - In D3 you can SELECT-LIST ME YOU and you get a list of both lists. In UD you need to SELECT WHATEVER TO 1 then SELECT WHATEVER TO 2 then MERGE.LIST 1 UNION 2 TO 3 and hope it works. :-) - In other MV you can DELETE-LIST ME YOU and have them both deleted. - The lists have different keys than the list name. For instance if I do a SELECT VOC then SAVE-LIST BILL the item in the SAVEDLIST file will be named BILL000. So don't expect to be able to SELECT SAVEDLIST 'BILL' and get the list. - Be careful about using DIR files. They often have restrictions in what characters are allowed in the key. So, if you create some items in SAVEDLISTS that might look like special*bill*1*0 then this will have to be changed to something like special_bill_1_0. - When

Hey Dubya (lol), I don't think you want me to put this baby on the group - it's almost 19,000 lines of code and 700KB. There are several support files as well.If you can come up with a place where it will be easy to put it, I'd be glad to. I've always shared my stuff, always will. I won't get rich, but that's OK. Are you volunteering to put it all together where everyone can get to it? I can try to get it all together, but happily, I've been pretty busy lately, so I'm not sure when. I won't be able to provide support as such, but I'd be happy to try to help anyone who wants to use it. Heck, knowing people are using my programs is almost better than money, anyway. I have an autozipper and autounzipper/installer that runs inside Pick BASIC. It magically untangles all the code into the appropriate files, compiles what needs to be compiled and doesn't try to compile what isn't a program. Creates files that don't exist and populates them, etc etc etc. Wrote it about nine hundred years ago, but it still runs on any Pick implementation. I also have unlimited ftp space. Re: [U2] PICK Systems Administrator position
Personally I think it's probably a smallish shop running some older version (I myself just encountered another MvBase believe it or don't). I wouldn't think Avante would be looking just for a Pick systems administrator, could be wrong. Probably the secrecy is due to the highly competitive nature of sharks when they smell blood. If the blood can be located to a particular town, for some towns, all the sharks know exactly who the victim is. So you don't say.
