Subject: [U2] UniVerse on Windows

I have a customer who is setting up a brand new user in UV on Windows --
this is a running machine, has been for years -- but the first new
employee is a long while.

This new user, when they get the Telnet log on and put in their user
name/password is NOT being asked for the path to account they want to go
into. They are being 'dumped' into the UV account. And then they
cannot 'log to' anywhere else.

The customer swears this new user is built just like all others -- a
Domain User with 'User Rights' on the UV Server.
Rocket tech support has said the is fix is that users HAVE to have Admin
rights in order to be prompted for the 'UniVerse account'

Something seems wrong with that answer. I mean, I am guessing it will
fix the issue, but I hate passing out Admin rights when the real answer
is probably something else.

So -- What else might be the cause here?? (I am WAY more UD than UV, so
any idea will likely be something I have NOT tried yet!)

Thanks -
David W.

Re: [U2] UniVerse/NT default login account unclassified

2011-12-11 Thread MACK ANDREW, MR
Hi Kathleené

I would also check the temp directory permissions for the users. Login to UV as
an admin and at tcl issue an ENV command. Make sure the temp and tmp
directories are full control (or modify) for all potential users. UV doesn't
use these dir but Win2008 checks for access on uvtelnet session start.

I do not believe that I have been clear on this issue.

Have a current server windows 2003/ UniVerse 10.0.21 where everything works.
All user are directed to the live account when then login. There are no entries
in the UV.LOGINS. There is a register entry in UvAccount which contains the
account name that is in UV.ACCOUNT.

On a New server windows 2008 R2 / UniVerse 10.3.10 set it up the same way and
it does not work. So then I added the users to the UV.LOGIN and have they go to
the live account but it does not work no matter what user policy is picked (
Home, Any, UV). I have stopped and restated the service after each change.

Try any directory. You will run into a problem with UAC in Windows and will
have to set it to the lowest security level and then reboot. Then try changing

The only Admin user can log on because you have to enter a path. Everyone else

Hi Kathleen
The uniadmin telnet area is where you resolve this. It is currently pointing
at their login directory on windows. You have options to change to
login into particular uv.account, or directory. There can be a problem
here with Windows UAC that inhibits this from working properly. Are you
getting a permissions error when you access the telnet menu in uniadmin.

Kathleene:

When you say ...does not work, what does that mean? With networking all
kinds of things are happening and isolating the problem is imperative.

For instance, in order for anyone to log into our UD server, running on Windows
2008 R2, they need to have a Windows user and be a member of the appropriate
group(s) (those given to the dbms directory). Active Directory adds a level of
abstraction, but you should be able to create a simple domain user who has
access to the machine. Anyway, once the user is created and they're a member
of the same group that the dbms directory gives full
privileges to, then you should be able to log in to the UV account (I can in
UD). When I make a telnet connection I should be able to see the UV login
prompts. This is also where problems might arise; if you can't see the UV
login prompts your problems are prior to the user/group and UV login issue.

So, I guess my question is; can you be more specific regarding your problems?
e.g. what appears, what you've tried, what were the results, etc?

HTH,

Bill

properly replicated on site) users can no longer log into Universe.
Everything works properly up to the point where it logs into the UV

ideas? Server name hard coded somewhere maybe? We're totally out of

Like Bob, I had a similar problem on Windows 2003 (UV 10.2.10) and found
it was permissions on the temp folder that was causing the problem.

Check ENV at TCL to see if the temp folder for UV is different from the
temp folder you use when logged into windows. By default Windows is
C:\temp and UV is C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local
Settings\Temp. You have got to have write access to the folder for it to
work.

[U2] [UV] UV ODBC Driver Install Problem {unclassified}

2010-08-11 Thread MACK ANDREW, MR
Morning all

I am having a problem with installing the UV ODBC 10.3 client on a
Windows 2003 R2 SP2 64-bit server. The Rocket availability matrix shows
that this server version is supported by 10.3 client. I am trying to
install the ODBC drivers from the UniVerse Client 10.3 CD, which has
been copied onto the servers D drive, whilst logged on as a local
administrator.

The install completes without error and there are no related events in
the application or system logs. After a server reboot, the ODBC Admin
tool shows the default User DSN's UV/ODBC Sales Sample and UV/ODBC
Service Sample and these are configured with the IBM UniVerse ODBC
Driver. However when you try to configure them, you get pop up windows
with the error messages The setup routines for the IBM UniVerse ODBC
Driver ODBC driver could not be found. Please reinstall the driver and
Driver's ConfigDSN, ConfigDriver, or ConfigTranslator failed Component
not found in the registry. Clicking on the Drivers Tab shows that only
some SQL ODBC drivers are installed. I have tried re-installing the
drivers to no effect.

I checked the registry and the drivers are all listed, including the
Microsoft drivers that should also be showing in the drivers tab of the
ODBC Admin tab. However when I check the System32 folder, the uvodbc.dll
driver is not there. I copied in the uvodbc.dll driver from another
installation but that made no difference. I suspect it needs registering
but I don't know how to do that outside of an install program.

I found an email on this list from 9 Jun 09 where John Wahl had a
problem with the UniAdmin tool on W2k8 server and Michael Dallaire noted
he had a similar problem with the UV ODBC drivers on a 64 bit system.
However, there wasn't a lot more detail. Can anyone elaborate?

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: [U2] [UV] UV ODBC Driver Install Problem {unclassified}

2010-08-11 Thread MACK ANDREW, MR

The solution is that Windows server 64-bit has 2 versions of the
odbcad32.exe executable. A 64 bit version by default in the
C:\Windows\System32 folder and a 32bit version in the
C:\Windows\SysWOW64 folder. If you use the one in the SysWOW64 folder,
it picks up the 32 bit ODBC drivers without a problem. This is, of
course, perfectly logical and understandable. *grin*

My thanks to Ross Craig for the spot-on help.

Re: [U2] UniVerse on Windows 2003 Server - Environment {unclassified}

2010-03-01 Thread MACK ANDREW, MR
Hi Mike,

We run our Dev and Test UniVerse 10.2.10 servers in a virtualized
environment. The ESX servers are connected to a EMC SAN via fibre
channel.

We have noticed a bit of slow down in the virtual servers at odd times
as well. Our user load on these servers is small (10 - 15 users) but
they can be running large processes during tests. The ESX servers that
host the UniVerse VM also host a lot of other VMs (such as BizTalk
servers, SQL servers, file and print servers and Web / share point
servers). Any above-the-norm activity on any of these can cause a slow
down on the other VM as resource contention kicks in.

Do your virtual host servers use SAN storage? Also, what other VM are
hosted on the hardware and what are their activity patterns like? I have
found that if one VM is doing a lot of disk I/O, it can take the ESX
server a minute or so to balance the load to give the other VM a chance.

We are running UniVerse on Windows 2003 Server in a virtualized
environment.
99% of the time the system runs great and we have no issues, however,
about once a day or every other day during the busiest time, we have a
period of
2-3 minutes where the server slows down and basically quits responding.
Without us taking any action the system begins responding normally
again and we usually make it through that day without issue.

We typically have around 85 users on the system at one time sometimes
that gets up closer to 95 or 100 but not often. I have noticed certain
processes that definitely cause the issue like running winmsd from the
command line or renaming a directory on the server. Since I know these
processes cause the issue I don't do that during the day. Obviously
there are other processes that also can cause issues for us.

We have worked with our vendor and Rocket and the latest we've gotten
from them is that our server is under-resourced. While that very well
could be true, we want to do a little more research first and reach out
to other Windows/UniVerse users to see what hardware they are running
and if anyone is in a virtualized environment.

Any help we can get would be appreciated.

Re: [U2] [UV] Locked License Seat {unclassified}

2009-08-02 Thread MACK ANDREW, MR
Dan, I had a look around with procexp (and isn't it a nice wee app
indeed!) but couldn't see anything that matched the locked up PID. Could
be my inexperience with the app though as it does produce a lot of very
detailed info. Anyway, we had a server reboot scheduled for the weekend
so I decided to wait and see if that would tidy things up and it did!

I find it interesting that uvlictool and stopping the UniVerse services
couldn't shift a locked up UniVerse lic but a server reboot did. That
points to a rogue process holding the license but it can't seen using
tasklist or procexp.exe.

Anyway, problem solved until next time :-) Thanks Dan, Daniel and Jeff
for your suggestions and help.

Microsoft has a tool called procexp.exe that shows a process and all its

Just be careful, it is a very powerful tool.

Do you have any rogue cmd.exe processes running on the server? One of
the most common causes we've seen for stuck licenses is that the uv
session launched a DOS /c command line process that was somehow
problematic. Killing the uv process was not enough, the cmd.exe process
it launched had to be zapped as well, only then would the uvlictool free
up the license.

[U2] [UV] Locked License Seat {unclassified}

2009-07-28 Thread MACK ANDREW, MR
Hi all,

I have a small problem with a license seat (42) that is being consumed
by a PID (2160) according to uvlictool, but that is not showing up in
PORT.STATUS or the Windows tasklist.

I have tried uvlictool clean_lic -a and both kill 2160 15 and kill 2160
9 with no effect. UniVerse has been restarted several times since it
started to show up and that hasn't shifted it. ANALYZE.SHM advises that
there is no printer segment attached to the PID so it just seems that it
is a tied up license issue.

I cannot find any info on anything besides uvictool that would allow me
to examine or clear the license, so before I escalate this to IBM, does
anyone have any ideas?

UniVerse 10.1.18 on Windows 2003 Server R2

Thanks for you help.

I'm attempting to use the GCI system and I'm having trouble getting it
to work.
I'm working on Windows Server 2003 and UV10.2

Here's what I've done :
Create a small function in C: int getSum(int, int) Compile the function
and create a lib from the object file.
Copy the lib over to UV/gcidir
Login to the UV account and run GCI.ADMIN Created a new GCI definition
file called MAGCI file using option 1 Defined the new function this way:

Subroutine name: getSum (the name I want to be able to call in UV)
Language: c
External Name: getSum (the actual name of the C function)
Module Name: test (the library name which contains the function)
one int type output and two int type arguments for input

Compiled the items in the new CGI file with admin option #5 Installed
the new DLL and re-logged in to the UV account

Wrote a UV subroutine to use the new function:
DECLARE GCI getSum
PRINT getSum(2,3)

And I get the following error:
Error 126 loading GCI library e:\IBM\UV\bin\magci.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
Program TEST: Line 2, Invalid GCI subroutine.

I think that I'm missing something key here, but I don't know what it
is.
I'd appreciate any help here.

Thanks

[U2] [UV] using distributed files with multi level data files possible? {unclassified}

2008-10-15 Thread MACK ANDREW, MR
We have a few distributed files on UV 10.1.18 on Windows 2003 32 bit. 64
bit files would be better but I thought there were limitations in their
use on a 32 bit OS, especially with DYNAMIC files?

I seem to remember from the UV internals course that UV/Net can have
problems accessing the file. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Mike... Wow, the 64bit is an easy solution. I tried something with
either the create-file or the resize command 6 months ago and it failed
with my conclusion at the time that it must not be supported on our
windows 2003 platform. Yesterday I used the create file with the 64bit
option and it worked fine. Thanks for the tip!

I'd do something like this paragraph (not tested...) but it should

RE: [U2] UVODBC Account Activation {unclassified}

2008-06-25 Thread MACK ANDREW, MR
Hi,

A clean account is almost necessary. ODBC is very picky and we found
that our data was OK but that the dictionaries were full of 10 years
worth of difficulties :)

It was easier to create a new account, populate the VOC with file
pointers to the data files but create the dictionary locally. Then we
could put only the data items we wanted to expose into the dictionary.
This allowed us to format data differently from what the users needed to
see and ensure that clean dictionaries were presented.

Okay.

Firstly, do you need this file in your account? Oddly enough, most of my
hard to fix problems with ODBC have been caused by the various
preparation/export programs crashing on system files we've never
touched. If you don't need it, delete the VOC entry. I had it crash on
PTERM.FILE - a system-supplied multi-part file.

Secondly, go to pickwiki, find the page on Universe, and then look at
the page on ODBC. You might find it useful as it describes my
tribulations with 9.6.

Bear in mind that these export routines process EVERYTHING, so the
entire account needs to be nice and clean, not just the files you're
exporting :-(

Wol

[U2][UV] UV ODBC and SQL 2005 {unclassified}

Hi,

We are looking at updating our MS SQL servers to MS SQL 2005. Currently
we use UV ODBC build 7084 (Client 10.1.A) on the SQL server (Windows
2000) to connect to our UV 10.1.18 instance running on Windows 2003.

Is anyone aware of any problems with the ODBC driver on the 10.1.B
Client (build 7049)? Is it a better fit with SQL 2005 than the 10.1.A
client or should I leave well enough alone?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I can't get my head around the proper query logic on this Friday.

I have a FILE with mv FIELD containing strings. I want to query records
where at least one of the FIELD values doesn't begin with SF... or
SH

To be clear: I don't want records if any of the following occurs:

FIELD = 'SF123'
FIELD = 'SH456'
FIELD = 'SF123':@VM:'SH456'

but I do want records if any of these occur:

FIELD='PQ789'
FIELD='SF123':@VM:'XY789'
FIELD='SF123':@VM:'SH456':@VM:'GH789'

I tried

SELECT FILE WITH FIELD UNLIKE SF...SH...
and
SELECT FILE WITH FIELD UNLIKE SF... AND FIELD UNLIKE SH...

but those include records where FIELD='SF123':@VM:'SH456'.

Then I tried

SELECT FILE WITH NO FIELD LIKE SF...SH...
and
SELECT FILE WITH NO FIELD LIKE SF... AND NO FIELD LIKE SH...

but that throws out records where FIELD='SF123':@VM:'SH456':@VM:'GH789'
which I need to keep. I've tried some others variants using 'EVERY' but
to no avail.

So, I'm as a loss short of writing a I-descriptor. Anyone have their
logic cap on today?
