Okay, the printer is a creep... (creap?)... I took it in and after
removing just about everything, the service guy found the spring-lock that
holds the top gears against the bottom gears had come off. I guess that
paper jam last month was worse than I thought. In any case, they put it
back on and the printer is back to 'normal' and giving service as
expected.

I wish I had been onsite when the jam occurred. The person who cleared the
jam mentioned that the paper was in pretty tight...

Thanks for the suggestions. I think the principle mentioned that if it's
less than one line, it's mechanical and if it's a line-sized creep, it's
software. Very good rule of thumb. Thanks Jeff, for sending that along.

RE: [U2] Printer Creeping

2006-11-30 Thread Allen E. Elwood
We had several okidata printers at CSI Donner when I worked there - we
killed more trees with these little things than you could throw a rock at.
Any who, there was a part on the tractor assembly that wore out on a regular
basis. For us it was about every 6 to 8 months, and the maintenance guys
would be changing that piece.

Instead of a chain, or a gear assembly, it's just two rollers rubbing
against each other to advance the paper and sooner or later they're a goner.
That's when you get the slow creeping of the paper, and the creeping feeling
you should have bought an Epson. :)

I agree, I remember this problem occurring on a printer where the rubber
pins on the tractor feed had some worn out and this occurred. It was
not obvious because they did not appear to be worn out until you saw
them next to the new ones. This was 10-12 years ago or more.

RE: [U2] Printer Creeping

I have seen similar problems on Okidata Dot Matrix printers. This may
not solve your problem but it might be worth a try if your printer is
similar to our Oki... The printhead on the Okidata slides on a bar.
Lubricating this bar has fixed these paper handling problems for us
occasionally. If you try this, don't use WD-40 (at least that's what
Okidata says). Use a heavier type of grease. Sorry, I can't tell you
what kind. It's something our maintenance department keeps on hand and
I really don't know what it is. You may be able to call the printer
manufacturer and find out what they recommend.

Karl

Is it under-running or over-running?

Dave is probably right about tractor errors, but if it is over-running, does
the printer auto-sense the top of form, or is the top of form/page depth
manually adjustable? It's a long time since I used a greenbar, but I
remember some of them had manual adjustments for the paper depth: could that
have got jogged somehow?

Does sending a form feed locate the next print job correctly?

RE: [U2] Printer Creeping

2006-11-30 Thread Hennessey, Mark F.
Make sure any 'lines per page' and 'lines per inch' settings on the printer are
correct...

Is the printer networked, or connected directly to the server? If networked,
verify print server settings... if directly connected reseat the connector...
In either case inspect all cables.

Any new equipment installed near the U2 server or printer?

Subject: [U2] Printer Creeping

Just lately, one greenbar printer (we only have one left, hurray), has
started creeping less than a line per page. For 2 or 3 pages, who cares,
other than me, but for any jobs more than a few pages, the text is running
over the perforation.

This printer has been in service for more than a couple years without any
problems. This showed up on one job last month and I turned the printer
off and then back on and re-printed and it worked fine. This morning, a
report printed during the night crept and after turning the printer off
and back on, it did it again on a reprint.

Help? It's Month-End and I have over 1000 pages to print and can't afford
to have this problem, as you can imagine...

Any ideas? grasp, grasp...

If its 'less than one line per page' I would think its probably
mechanical. Paper feed motor/clutch/belts/tractors or something like that.

RE: [U2] Printer Creeping

2006-11-30 Thread Anthony Dzikiewicz
Ive had this happen. This doesn't sound like your exact problem if it
is consistent, but I have had situations where a detail line (or
heading) is all of a sudden going beyond the 132 col report length and
jumping down to the next line. The fix was truncate the data to a fixed
length in the program.

Re: [U2] Printer Creeping

2006-11-30 Thread jpb
When was the last time you had any maintenance on the printer? Surely you
have a backup plan in the event this last printer died :-) Do you have a
laser that can take over the duties? A quick fix would be to set the Laser
up to default to landscape on a legal size paper. 8 lines per inch and not
more than 10 characters per inch Currier font.

Re: [U2] Printer Creeping

2006-11-30 Thread Dave Taylor
Karl,

You don't want to hear this, but my guess is that it's a hardware problem:
the stepper motor in the printer or some part of the tractor drive that
moves the paper is wearing of failing.

Can you print your print jobs on a laser printer at 12 cpi or 17 cpi?

hth,

Dave
