Seriously though, the original poster's question was whether anyone had
the source code for a Format program. On UniVerse you will find the
source code for both the FORMAT verb (which calls the FORMAT.BASIC
subroutine in files BP and APP.PROGS. The fromnt end for the FORMAT and
FANCY.FORMAT verbs are named FORMAT.B (this is where you would change
the default parameters for margins, etc.) and the code in APP.PROGS is
named FMT.BASIC.B.

Yoou can change the source for either (or both) of those items to make
them work whatever way you want. Just make sure you understand how to
globally catalog them properly, particularly the one in APP.PROGS which
must be globally cataloged as -FORMAT.BASIC

The built in FORMAT (and FANCY.FORMAT) command from within ED will then
work as you want or the version of the verb FORMAT from will work as you
want.

H This doesn't sound logical to me. If your FORMAT output would
be off the page because of margin settings, wouldn't everything you
print to that printer from within UniVerse suffer the same problem?

Anyway, this all seems way beyond the scope of the original poster's

You can also setup your own Format program, without modding the FORMAT.B just

catalogued routine.

Hi,

There's some wacky stuff it's doing with memory in that ED program, I can't
figure out what they are trying to do
Of course it was originally written in 1992 as a port of the PI/Open Editor

I remember this being implemented from my days in PI/open development. It was
all about performance when editing very large items.

If the data was stored as a single dynamic array, processing is easy but
becomes painfully slow with massive records. I recall
comparing ED with another editor that did not break the data up in this way.
When the data was over 100,000 lines long (I cannot
remember what this huge item was), the performance difference was huge.

Although processors are now a lot faster than when this was written over 20
years ago, the gains are still worth having.

*Original poster* has source code that goes way deep in

Subject: Re: [U2] BFORMAT

Hi

Does anybody have a working copy of BFORMAT - I downloaded it from some
useful site a long time back and modded it to work for modern UniVerse,
but somewhere along the line (one late night) I have introduced some
bugs I don't have time to go fix.. so before I do, maybe someone out
there already has a BASIC formatting program that will allow me to only
have an indent of
2 spaces instead of the usual 6?

Anyone?

Thanks

Dennis

Does anybody have a working copy of BFORMAT...

To answer the question:
http://www.pickwiki.com/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BFormat
For printing:
http://www.pickwiki.com/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?LFormat
A Lot of other utilities here:
http://www.pickwiki.com/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BasicSource

In addition to suggestions for ED/FOR and FORMAT, I also suggest using
the wED editor in AccuTerm which supports code formatting - the
upcoming v7.1 has some dramatic enhancements in this area.

Built into Universe since Release 10 is editor called AE from Unidata. AE
has a format command within the editor (FOR). It is much easier to use the

So where are these documented?
