I have two questions

2010-10-10 Thread Mike Coulombe
Hi, In maverick, how do you get out of the menu on the top
panel once you right arrow into it? I hit escape twice and get to the
same menus, but I can't get back to the point where I can use alt and
f1. 2, I don't see a orca directory in my home directory anymore. So,
Storm, where do you put your custom orca file now?
Thanks Mike.

movie player and youtube

2010-04-30 Thread Mike Coulombe
Hi, I am having a problem that just started with movie
player. Here is the message I get when using movie player to search on
you tube. Nice that this can be red in movie player with orca using the
arrow keys.
The response from the server could not be understood. Please check you
are running the latest version of libgdata.
What package do I have to install to get this. My regular ubuntu
machine gives the same message when I try to search for something on you
tube in movie player.
By the way, this happened before and after I installed the
ubuntu-restricted-extra package.

lucid looking good

2010-01-25 Thread mike
Hi, I installed lucid on a computer today and found the following with a fresh
install. With out Bills driver speech is still a little slow. I hope this
driver is included by default soon.
Speakup now compiles fine, and I was able to switch between the consul and
the gnome desktop just fine with two exceptions. On this laptop, it goes into
standby mode when I switch back to gnome. But entering my password works, and
both speakup and Orca work now.
In the consul, speakup works fine. But for some reason I have to press enter
twice to get it talking. After that, it works fine. Keep up the good work.
Lucid is looking good.
I also saw a new program called simple scan. Will this let you save pages in
text format?

my impressions of ubuntu lynx

2009-12-17 Thread mike
Hi, I tried the lynx live CD today and found it to work with Orca now. Here is
what I found. I have to have my monitor on for some reason to get to the login
screen. But this was the same in karmic when it first started out.
Once I got it installed, Orca was very slow. But removing pulseaudio took
care of that. The sound settings still say waiting for sound server, and
speakup wouldn't compile as it did in karmic using m-a a-I speakup-source. But
I'm sure this will work later in the cycle.
As for the system. I ran it two hours and had no speech loss at all. I must
say, this release is looking pretty good from what I see at this time. I
installed the old gnome-app-install and couldn't get it to work. But this could
also be because it is early in the cycle.
Removing this package will get the movie player to work correctly.
gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio.

will accessible login work in karmic whin it comes out?

2009-10-12 Thread mike
Hi, I have heard different things about accessible login. I know in the past
distros, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
Will accessible login work in Karmic when it is released? If so, will it be
automatic, or will you have to enable it? If you will have to enable it, how
will this be done since gdm is different now?
Thanks Mike.

Hi, have any of you used the USB creator in karmic? I tried it the other day

of space for the settings, so there must be a bug somewhere. This use to work

Is there any way to deepen the base a little on the asus netbooks. I know fn

problems after installing karmic

2009-07-21 Thread mike
Hi, I installed a karmic live CD today and discovered that it booted fine, but
I could no longer boot my windows operating system. Has anyone else had this
problem?
I used downarrow like I always did by pressing it several times to get to

it one time, two times and so on with the same results.
So has the way you get to the windows operating system changed too. I
realize karmic is still in development, but this and the gdm problems I have
are going to cause a lot of trouble for anyone who upgrades expecting things to
at least work as they did before.
I reinstalled the last version of ubuntu again and everything worked fine.

I'm having a problem with karmic

error message sounds and the system stops loading until you press enter.

a question about the ubuntu desktop

2009-06-04 Thread mike
Hi, I have the karmic development build of ubuntu working good except for one
thing. When I uninstall pulseaudio, it also uninstalls the ubuntu desktop. It
must not have uninstalled anything other than graphics because everything still
seems to be the same in the menus. But after that every time I log in I get a
error sound and loading stops. Pressing enter causes it to finish loading and
Orca starts talking fine. I installed pulse again and still got the error. But
when I installed the ubuntu desktop it went away. The problem is, when I
install the ubuntu desktop, it installs pulseaudio.
Does anyone know what programs are part of the desktop. Obviously it isn't much
because it only took a few seconds to install. If I know the programs maybe I
can find the one needed to stop the error.

A question about renaming files

2009-05-27 Thread mike
Hi, Maybe one of you know what to do here.
I converted some files to avi in windows. I then used ubuntu to rename the
files over my network. In windows, when renaming files I never had to type the
avi extention, just the name and things worked fine.
I did the same in ubuntu, just typed the new name and the file was renamed.
Linux still reported it as a avi file so I thought things were fine.
After going back to windows however, I only heard the filename and file for
the file type. So windows wanted to know what to play the file with? I told it
and the file played fine.
I then added the avi extension as .avi and everything worked fine, but .avi is
now reported in windows as part of the filename when I hear the name. Then it
reports the file as a video clip like it should.
My question is how do I fix this so the avi extension is not reported. Just
renaming the file in windows or Linux doesn't do this. Apparently Linux does
something different when files are renamed.

here is a work around for adman apps in 9.04

2009-04-08 Thread mike
Hi, as you probably know the admin apps are now accessible in the user account
in 9.04 if you do some playing to get them to load and speak with Orca.
I tried something else today and thought I would share this since it seems to
work.
First run a app like computer janitor. You will be asked for your password,
but don't enter it yet. Before you type your password, quit Orca. Now enter
your password and press enter. Give the app a few seconds to load then start
Orca.
I found after doing this the apps were accessible. Luke, would there be a
way to get Orca to exit when running a admin app and restart after the password
was entered and the app loads?

here are three things I found after installing ubuntu that need looking in to

2009-03-31 Thread mike
Hi, I installed the latest live CD today and discovered three things.
1, The audio sounds like it is speeding up at times when the system logs in.
This has been the case for a while, but Orca works fine.
2, The adman apps are still not accessible from the user account like they are
on the live CD. If Luke's fix was suppose to fix this, it isn't working yet.
3, I enabled the root account so I could use some of those apps, and found when
I ran Orca from that account it isn't usable. Apparently pulse audio is only
disabled for the user account created when you install the system. I haven't
tried this yet, but if pulse is also enabled for any account you create this is
going to be a problem for those creating accounts for other people if they need
access to those accounts.
Other than that, 9.04 seems to be working fine.
