[Bug 57663] kde sliders don't work as expected

2006-08-25 Thread paaguti
Public bug reported:

I use DVBCUT to cut commercials from films I record on my
DVB-T PVR. This program is written for KDE. The problem I
experience with Ubuntu dapper but not with the previous Ubuntu
distros nor with an up-to-date Debian testing is the following:
the program shows two sliders to navigate through the recording
and this slider doesn't work. On any film with a length of more than
15 minutes (aprox.) the sliders only allow me to navigate till that
point (i.e. 15 minutes)

Procedures followed to check the bug:

1) generate the package on dapper, breezy and deb.testing
and install it. Use a clip of aprox. 2:00:00
OK on breezy and deb.testing and KO on dapper

2) Use the package generated deb.testing and install on dapper
and breezy. Use the same clip. OK with breezy, KO on dapper.

[Bug 23445] Re: iMac G5 will freeze after booting up

2006-08-25 Thread Mike Hore
This looks like the same problem I'm getting, in trying to boot the CD
6.06.1 live image on my 1.6 GHz iMac G5. After the initial series of
messages under the ubunto logo, the fans spool up, the screen goes black
and everything freezes needing a hard reboot.

I'm actually a bit astonished that this has been around since Oct last
year and still not fixed -- after all it's hard and reproducible, and
there are a lot of these machines out there. The main ubuntu page
should have a warning saying it's currently incompatible with this
hardware.

The instructions in the link in the previous message may well be helpful
but as a Linux newbie with little spare time I don't really want to go
down that road. I think I'll just come back in a month and hope
someone's fixed it.

Cheers, Mike.

[Bug 57666] Odd quirk when trying to install SMB Printers

2006-08-25 Thread Tareq Alamgir Khandaker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeprint OR a samba-related package

Basically, I was trying to install a printer attached to a Windows XP
machine through KDEPrint. I selected Windows SMB, then tried anonymous
login (seeing as Windows File and Printer Sharing needed no password). I
hit 'Scan' and I saw the network name and computers, but I kept getting
an

Error returning browse list:
 NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

I tried using guest but I was not able to scan the network. I searched
for the error on the Internet, and I found a solution here:
http://www.mepis.org/node/3458

First, scan the network with anonymous login, then go back and select
guest. Now, WITHOUT scanning again, expand the host with the printer:
Viola! printer found.

However, as a user, I should not have to use this workaround to install
a printer (however painless) since the workaround is not at all
intuitive.

The guest selection should be able to expand the network tree to browse
for a printer.

[Bug 44196] Re: gnome-cups-icon uses 100% CPU

2006-08-25 Thread Jan Groenewald
I can confirm this bug on Dell Optiplex Desktops running an up-to-date
dapper. This problem did not exist on breezy.

Note that I did not use GUI tools to configure CUPS, I edited
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf and added ServerName myprintserver.mynetwork.ac.za.
Printing is working, and sometimes after a print job the gnome-cups-icon uses
90% or more CPU until I killall gnome-cups-icon.

It did not immediately reproduce when I sent a printjob to test, but If
I see it again I'll also take an strace and send it in.

2006-08-25 Thread Matthew East

* towsonu2003:
 However, for the modem
section, I do not think giving only the scanmodem help is enough.
[...]
the documentation is also lacking how to configure the adsl connection

Yes, as I said above, those sections still need work. That's why this
bug hasn't been closed.

is there any way to gather the info laying down in our dialup modem
howto wiki page and put it in the documentation? just like the wiki
does, we could make it into sections, each section describing the way to
do it for one modem chipset (as identified by scanmodem).

Yes, I used the wiki information to write the ndiswrapper section, and
we can do the same for the modem section. It's quite difficult because
there are so many models of modem, and really difficult to confirm
whether the instructions for each of them are accurate.

For a new Ubuntu / Linux user, it is extremely hard to enable networking
when all the documentation is presented online, not offline...

Yeah, that's what this bug is about.

As an endnote, would it be possible to put the Broadcom bcm43xx
instructions into the offline guide as well? I would love to see as much
information about networking in the offline documentation as possible...
Thank you very much for your effort :)

This is a wireless chip right? I'm not completely sure about whether we
can document individual wireless chips, because (a) it's quite hard for
the user to find out what chip they have (as far as I know), and (b) the
information we have available is vast and probably not particularly
accurate (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs). Ndiswrapper is
generally a universal fix, which is why I included that.

[Bug 23445] Re: iMac G5 will freeze after booting up

2006-08-25 Thread Mark
Ben said: we cannot buy every piece of hardware that doesn't work or
that we want to support. It's not a matter of money, it's more a matter
of space.

Your viewpoint is in effect we have enough Macs already. I might
sympathize if these bugs were not so ancient, glaring, and cemented into
a final release even after multiple user reports and months of time.
There was a reason to say that you need actual hardware.

Ben, there have been, and still are, plenty of G5 testers. The test
pool is not the problem.

We *already know* where the problems live - bluetooth sound. The
point you're missing is basic. The bugs themselves are what demand
developer hardware, not picky users.

Testing in the face of such serious bugs is not something users should
do. Some bugs need hardware to solve right. Example - I could not type
into yaboot.conf. Glitches froze everything in the middle of editing.
It was a race against time to change a single line. That kind of thing
makes user testing impossible. Yes I used single mode and every
other trick. I tried every user-forum workaround, removing bluetooth
packages, all of it. Nothing helped. If I were an Ubuntu developer
with debug output screens and source familiarity, I would know what to
do. That is why these bugs call for hardware.

Bugs that sit unsolved for endless months, AND are crashing-kernel
severity, AND prevent user boot, AND have multiple corroboration
reports, AND have known code locations (sound/bluetooth), merit
hardware. Code this broken needs serious developer attention on the
actual box. With hardware you'll have them fixed in short order.
Without it Ubuntu will continue pretending to support hardware that it
doesn't.

That you have other PPC machines is nice but irrelevant. Either Ubuntu
supports the iMac G5 or not. If not, take it off the list of supported
hardware.

Your office should not be full of hardware that works, but hardware that
won't.  My advice?  Put one of those working G3/G4s in the closet;
replace it with a G5. Desk space is then unchanged. No closet? Rent a
public storage unit.

At least the G3/4 crowd can boot up and do proper user testing. I
can't.

[Bug 57591] Re: Unopkg package manager does not open

I forgot to test the location of the profile. The home directory mentioned is
located on a nfs share.

Additional research now shows that the problem only exists if the
.openoffice.org2 profile is located on the nfs share. Moving the profile to a
local disk resolves the problem.

This makes the bug of a low priority, it is more a bug for openoffice
and has nothing to do with the packaging. I have filed a bug in the

[Bug 55952] Re: mouse works _sometimes_

2006-08-25 Thread Scott James Remnant
Having reviewed both of the log files you attached, it is clear that in
the case where your mouse is not functioning that it is not responding
on the USB bus.

This is almost certainly a hardware problem; I have a similar mouse and
if it's sleeping, I need to wake it up before the computer can detect it
(at which point it is added to the USB bus). Check that your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf uses /dev/input/mice (the default) so that X can cope
when the mouse isn't connected until after the server is running.

It could be possible that a combination of your hard drive and mouse is
causing problems for your computer, for example too much power could be
being drawn or a bad combination of USB 1.1 and 2.0 devices.

There's no evidence here of a software problem in udev. Another
possibility is that there is a kernel USB subsystem bug, or at least
it's unable to handle this hardware situation. Check /var/log/dmesg for
interesting errors during a boot where your mouse does not work. If you
find any, please feel free to reopen this bug and reassign it to linux-
source-2.6.17

[Bug 57405] Re: Edgy won't mount blank CDs or DVDs

2006-08-25 Thread Simon Law
Ah, OK.

Are you able to read pressed CDs and DVDs using your CD burner?

When you run /usr/lib/nautilus-cd-burner/list_cddrives, what output do
you get?

Please run:
  $ lshal 21 | tee /tmp/lshal.log
and attach /tmp/lshal.log to this bug report.

Finally, please run:
  $ gnome-session-remove gnome-volume-manager
  $ gnome-volume-manager -n 21 | tee /tmp/g-v-m.log
Then, insert a blank CD to see what g-v-m thinks about it. You can
hit Control-C to stop g-v-m and attack /tmp/g-v-m.log to this bug
as well.

Thanks.

[Bug 57153] Re: xorg-server 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3 breaks X: no screens found

2006-08-25 Thread sidney
This event probably has done very serious harm to the migration to linux
from Windows. All of us using this forum are using another operating
system as well as Ubuntu or are knowledgeable enough about linux to
operate in the text mode. My guess is that most people who choose Ubuntu
have no idea of how to use linux in the text mode. Ubuntu's simple
graphical installation is why people pick it over Debian; you get Debian
quality with ease of installation. Therefore, it is my further guess
that many people who made Ubuntu their only operating system had no
access to information on how to fix the bug, leaving them to reinstall
while losing all files and bookmarks. Since Ubuntu is the number one
system in Distro Watch, this failure discourages the use of linux. If
ever there was a critical bug, it was this one.

[Bug 55913] Re: Firefox default Homepage should now reffer to 6.06.1

2006-08-25 Thread Matthew East
A problem with changing the version number in the documentation - it
can't be done in translations, because the entities we use to substitute
the version number are expanded into the translated xml.

I've started a discussion on the doc list about how to fix this for Edgy
[1], but for now the approach I think we should take to this bug for
Dapper is to leave the documentation with 6.06 LTS as the version number
(as mdz said above, this is still valid), and remove the version number
on the Firefox home page.

[Bug 56603] Re: Kmail message list column context menu inconsistencies

2006-08-25 Thread Andreas Simon
Sorry, you got it wrong, this is not the feature you described.

This is not about the message list columns themselves but the 'View
Columns' context menu where you add/delete columns to/from you message
list view. This contect menu appears if you right-click with your mouse
on a column header in the message list view. The screen shots show very
clearly what's wrong.

If you activate sender and receiver columns so that both are shown, you
only get a checked 'receiver' entry in the 'View Columns' menu. Sender
is not there, although you have the column enabled. And if you uncheck
'receiver' not the receiver but the sender column is disabled. This is
clearly not a feature but a bug.

I am able to reproduce this with Kmail 1.9.4 (3.5.4-0ubuntu2), part of
KDE 3.5.4 on Edgy.

[Bug 57681] edgy installer - why dhclient keeps on looking for a dhcp server? i'm using static

2006-08-25 Thread Aldo Maggi
Public bug reported:

while installing edgy i noticed in the syslog that dhclient is keeping on
trying to spot a dhcp server.
i do not know if it is important for, maybe, updating some packages, if
available, but the problem is that the installer doesn't take account of the
fact, as it is in my case, that the router could not have an active dhcp server.
i think that asking at the very beginning of the installation if the router is
providing a dhcp service or not would be a much better choice.

[Bug 57501] Re: After resume, thinks my wireless network is wired

2006-08-25 Thread Ben Collins
I believe this is a network manager bug. If iwconfig can detect that the
interface is wireless (which it can when this occurs) then network
manager should recognize this as well. I know that when it happens on my
machine, there's two things that make be believe this:

1) The wired interface(s) it shows are actually the names of the wireless
ESSID's
2) Reloading the driver(s) (including ieee80211) for my bcm43xx doesn't fix it.

This seems to be irrelevant to the card being used. Two other ubuntu
developers noticed this problems as well, and they are using different
chips/drivers than myself (and even the submitter).

[Bug 57590] Re: Installer crashed when installing Kubuntu onto a second partition of a hard drive.

2006-08-25 Thread B S Britzman
Hello Colin,
Thanks for your repsonse. I'm sorry but I have cleaned the drive for another
attempt, this time I will be attempting to load Kubuntu as sole occupant of the
disk.

To ensure a clean disk I am using OO File Shredder, any comments would
be welcome, Linux is verry new to me but must be better than Windows XP.
I have made a clean install of XP Pro and the following day it was blue
screening.

Will be intouch if any problems.

Barry S Britzman
