By what I have seen, no. scim-chewing package doesn't seem to set the
proper environment (the XMODIFIERS env variable) for XIM, so I don't
think the non-GTK/Qt X programs will work if the im-switch setting is
  done by scim-chewing.

 The first line in
/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim-chewing, XIM=SCIM, will do the magic.
It is very common for im-switch's conffile to use XIM instead of
XMODIFIERS. It do work in X programs not using GTK or Qt.

Yes, you are absolutely right.

My comments quoted above are wrong. Sorry for the confusion.

- AndrewLee sladen: 0.2.1 has a problem in hash data file. So the input

- AndrewLee sladen: It make the input method look fine, but cannot type any
Chinese character.
- AndrewLee sladen: 0.2.1 is a broken version in upstream
- AndrewLee sladen: 0.3.1 is a working version
- AndrewLee sladen: So I suggest to upgrade to 0.3.1 whatever.
- AndrewLee sladen: I mean it's big
- AndrewLee sladen: A Chinese input method but cannot type Chinese characters.
+ This bug is fixed in scim-chewing 0.3.1, but the bugfix can't be easily
+ backported to 0.2.1, as it's a rewrite of the database-handling code.

- This seems to be related in one case to 'skype', this needs
- confirmation.
+ Therefore this bug should be fixed in edgy, and affects dapper only.

[Bug 61822] IBM Thinkpad volume keys handled wrong and made partly unusable

2006-09-22 Thread Mika Fischer
Public bug reported:

Hi!

This is related to Bug #51537.

My IBM Thinkpad (and all other thinkpads that I know of) have three
special volume contol keys: volume up, volume down and mute. These
keys are directly wired to the sound hardware, they need *no* software
support to work.

In Kubuntu edgy pressing the volume keys changes the volume as usual but
*additionally* changes the volume of the software mixer.

This is very unfortunate because: 1) I lose flexibility, 2) The volume
jumps are now very large. 3) Changing the volume via the software mixer
applet does not change the hardware volume, so the two come out of sync
making matters even mor confusing.

But the worst thing is the mute button. It is special in that it always
*mutes*. Tu unmute you have to press one of the other buttons.

But because kmilo (or whatever) also mutes the software mixer and this
one expects an unmute event, I can not get my sound back unless I
manually go to the software mixer and unmute the Master channel.

This situation is very unfortunate. I'm not opposed to *displaying* the
current status of the *hardware* volume keys but I'd much rather have
kmilo leave the software mixer alone for models where the volume is
controlled in hardware (like all IBM laptops I know of).

+ Current (GNOME 2.16) translation to Lithuanian language started to use
an artifical term for File translation (Rinkmena), which is incompatible
with other free software translations to Lithuanian language (including
previous versions of GNOME). There are NO translated free software,
where artiffical word Rinkmena is used. In the majority of free
software translations (KDE, Mozilla, GIMP, Debian, Ubuntu, Mandrake,
Suse, etc.) simple and clear word Byla is used for english word File
translation. Only few projects - OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox and it
seems XFCE about a 4 months ago started to use word Failas for file
translation (previous Lithuanian translations of these products used
word Byla). Failas is also used in Lithuanian translations of most
popular OS, desktop environment and office software - Microsoft Windows
  and Microsoft Office.

The term Rinkmena was never used in the past, we've been using Byla
since old-school MS-DOS times, as far as I remember, and there's no need
at all to confuse GNOME users. In all the documentation released about
the GNOME, KDE, etc. the term for a file menu is known as Byla not
as Rinkmena, including text and screenshots.

Meaning of lithuanian word Byla EXACTLY represents the meaning of the
  English word File

However the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language has
officially approved only the following terms as recommended: „Rinkmena“ and
„Failas“. The first is a new lithuanian word and the second is a transcription
of an english word „File“.

I published a poll in Lithuanian Ubuntu community webpage
(www.ubuntu.lt) to get users oppinion on whether to use Byla, File
- or Rinkmena. The results by now are:
+ or Rinkmena. The results were:

  Failas 58%
  Byla 36%
  Rinkmena 6%

It is obvious that users don't like that artificial word Rinkmena.
This was reported to GNOME bugzilla
(http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=328324).
- However it is too late to see a new term in new version of GNOME, but it's

2006-09-22 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
We should finish to fix 'file' translations in Ubuntu 6.06 (most of
GNOME software in Ubuntu 6.06 already has fixed translation, which we
fixed in Ubuntu 6.04) - we just need to review and fix only newly
appeared and changed strings with 'file' translation :)

[Bug 61826] Usplash doesn't show any message, just progress

2006-09-22 Thread Carlos Perelló Marín
Public bug reported:

Since a couple of weeks ago, Edgy Usplash appears on boot, but I don't
see any message about what's going on in the system and the progress bar
is not completely filled, when it's at around 50%, I see again tty1 and,
some seconds after it, I see gdm's prompt. Just in case you think it's
related with fsck, tty1 only has information about GRUB, a couple of
messages from the kernel and finally the login prompt.

2006-09-22 Thread MaV
Public bug reported:

On laptop Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7440 wireless card doesn't work. It's
because this notebook needs specific kernel module for it to work

[Bug 61830] battery

[Bug 59351] Re: usplash not showing text

2006-09-22 Thread Scott James Remnant
Indeed, I find it rather elegant that we are using the same argument
rather than trying to add two arguments with a different meaning.

quiet - don't give me any unnecessary messages during boot

That means no kernel debug (just errors), no boot debug (just errors),
etc.

By removing that, you're stating that for some reason you want to see
scrolling messages, probably because you're debugging something or just
bored. It makes sense that it activates everything.

This is why the initscripts/lsb-base follow the same message, and will
not output to the console if quiet is found on the command-line

[Bug 61530] Re: Shutdown sound is truncated

2006-09-22 Thread Scott James Remnant
I'm afraid that's not true Matt.

The only sleep statement, or even non-zero duration, in our shutdown
sequence is between sending the TERM and KILL signals now; and that
sleep statement is by far the longest period within the entire sequence.

A fast machine is able to reach the point at which the sound card is
muted in well under a second.

I would say that we should keep the sound short and simple

[Bug 61834] SD slot on 7-in-1 USB card reader not recognised as SD

2006-09-22 Thread Malcolm Parsons
Public bug reported:

There are 4 slots on my 7-in-1 USB card reader.
HAL calls them USB Storage-CFC, USB Storage-MSC, USB Storage-SMC and USB
Storage-SDC.
HAL has the correct storage.drive_type for the compact flash, memory stick and
smart media slots, but the SD slot has a storage.drive_type of disk.

In /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-usb-card-readers.fdi I see
why:
  match key=storage.model contains=Storage-CFC
merge key=storage.drive_type type=stringcompact_flash/merge
  /match
  match key=storage.model contains=Storage-MSC
merge key=storage.drive_type type=stringmemory_stick/merge
  /match
  match key=storage.model contains=Storage-SMC
merge key=storage.drive_type type=stringsmart_media/merge
  /match
  match key=storage.model contains=Storage-MMC
merge key=storage.drive_type type=stringsd_mmc/merge
  /match

HAL expects Storage-MMC, but I have Storage-SDC.

So the fix is to add this:
  match key=storage.model contains=Storage-SDC
merge key=storage.drive_type type=stringsd_mmc/merge
  /match

[Bug 61835] No grid-lines property on GtkTreeView

2006-09-22 Thread Robert Casanova
Public bug reported:

On Gtk+ 2.10.x the development team added the option to paint the
vertical/horizontal grid lines of a table/tree.
When edgy added the 2.10.x version it worked flawless, but after some updates
it stop working and now I get this error if I have it set :

GLib-GObject-WARNING **: IA__g_object_notify: object class `GtkTreeView'
has no property named `grid-lines'

is it a new inserted bug or the problem is from gtk team?
