[Bug 74605] Unable to update Dapper - Edgy via Install CD (Feature Request)
Public bug reported: Something that is currently quite annoying to me is the fact that the install cd cannot be used to upgrade a Dapper system to Edgy. I'm aware that the alternate cd is required to do this, but I cannot see the sense in having to download an entire new .iso just to upgrade my Dapper system when I have already downloaded the base install of Edgy in the past aka the Install CD. Please, reinstate the ability to upgrade from the install cd. It hopefully should be a trivial task (every Debian based distro I have ever used has this ability) and it would make both my and I'm sure many others lives much easier. Having to download 500mb off of packages or a new .iso that contains software we have already downloaded just seems like a waste to me. If you are wondering why I don't just do a fresh install, the answer is that the installer is so slow on my 1ghz 512mb ram laptop that I'd almost be better off downloading the alternate .iso and doing it that way (text based installer fallback? I'll log another feature request for that). ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Unable to update Dapper - Edgy via Install CD (Feature Request) https://launchpad.net/bugs/74605 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 74606] Edgy Installation program fallback for slow systems (Feature Request)
Public bug reported: I have a 1ghz AMD based laptop with 512mb of ram and the Edgy installer runs very slowly. So slow in fact that each time you click a button it takes around 10 minutes for the next screen to come up. I've tried various solutions such as noapic nolapic on boot without success. On this same laptop the Dapper installer works fine, so its easy to suspect that something is wrong with the Edgy installer. What would have made this all moot however would be an option on boot of the installer cd to do an old style text based installation instead. So this feature request is to bring back in some form the ability to do old-school style text based install with the standard install cd. This would have made my life much easier! ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Edgy Installation program fallback for slow systems (Feature Request) https://launchpad.net/bugs/74606 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 72991] Re: nvidia driver 9xxx rejects 1280x1024 mode
I did some more debugging. The new driver seems to detect the monitor resolution in a different way (or at all) compared to the 8xxx series. It claims that the maximum mode of my TFT is 1280x960 and the 'best fit' mode is 1024x768. Thus with manually adding the 1280x960 mode, I can get at least this resolution, which is much better than 1024x768, but still leaves me with two big black bars. Detecting monitor resolution through the DVI cable does not seem to work for me. Ubuntu's xorg detection scripts cannot figure it out at all, they are only right when I use the VGA cable. *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 30766 *** Hi Thanks for answering so far... I've read a lot of threads and it seems to me, that none of them got a working solution for a zyxel G-360 on edgy eft using kernel 2.6.17-10. To figure this out, I've created a thread http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=313453 In Edgy Eft there are several Firmwareversions included. I've tested them all with adding options acx firmware_ ver=1.2. 1.34 in /etc/modprobe.d/options I also tried to compile my own driver for edgy as described in http://acx100.sourceforge.net/wiki/ACX but without Luck. I also tried to use ndiswrapper with the same bad result. Dmesg ¦ grep acx Give me all the time a timing error as a matter of wrong firmware. The last thing I try to figure out is IRQ-Problems. I've read in a thread, that someone had such a problem. If I am sure that I've tried all I could, I'll open a bug-report with all my informations. If you also have any ideas/hints to test, please send them to me. Thanks in advance. Best regards. Note that the wiki says it seems to work, not that it should. I happen to be the one who wrote that, and chose the wording with caution, since that statement is based on own experience (I own an acx11-based DWL-G650+) and on posts from the ubuntu forums. Your problem is that your wifi card (or the driver) is not functioning properly I would rather post a separate bug for that, specifying *exactly* what is not working. [Bug 73887] Re: Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well
I am quite a beginner, but I can explain some of what I have learned so far. I cannot tell what is happening in your case for sure, but I can give you some ideas how to check it: - Check with KSystemGuard (you can find it in Start-System, most probably you know already and I am explaining too much... :-)). There you can see the memory usage, including the swap. If you check the Physical memory, you can see that is shared between applications, buffers and caches. This is because Linux tries to make the most use of the non-needed memory for speeding up the system. So it keeps cached the areas being accessed on the Hard Disk lately. Only the blue part belongs to the applications. Linux will shrink the cached area if the applications need more memory. So it could well be happening, that when you open more applications, then the cached area is freed and that info is writen to the Hard Disk, so that is why you have heavier use of the disk on those moments, but this should only last for a while and stop after the new applications are opened. You can monitor the evolution of the memory use yourself and see the behaviour in your system. - I don't know how it is really meassured the total load. It can be a combination of the CPU use and Memory use. So if you are running out of memory and there is no swap memory, the load maybe can get that high. I am just guessing. Maybe after installing the swap your load will get lower, since the total amount if virtual memory will be much higher. Good luck. -- Edgy is slow and can't handle multiple apps well https://launchpad.net/bugs/73887 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 46487] Re: crash on 'replace all' command
Here's a fix for this. Originally fix was made by logiczero to upstream bug tracker: http://www.gphpedit.org/bugs/bug_view.php?id=132 Comment #266 - Added by logiczero at 2006-11-19 01:45:02 This bug still exists in v0.9.91 on Ubuntu 6.10. I looked at the code in file_replace.c. Line 481 looks like the spot where the lockup is happening. I commented out line 481: g_free(replace_all_dialog); and that seemed to stop the program from locking up. According to the documentation, gnome_dialog_run_and_close() calls gnome_dialog_close() before returning, which destroys the dialog by default. So g_free(replace_all_dialog) is trying to free memory for a dialog object that has already been destroyed on line 480. ** Attachment added: gphpedit.debdiff http://librarian.launchpad.net/5256502/gphpedit.debdiff ** Changed in: gphpedit (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = MOTU Reviewers Team Status: Confirmed = In Progress -- crash on 'replace all' command https://launchpad.net/bugs/46487 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 68012] Re: No usplash on boot/shutdown
I can confirm this behavior as well, I have a Celeron 2GHz+Intel 82845 motherboard on my desktop During bootup/shutdown, all I can see is a blinking cursor on top left corner on my screen. if I wait for some time (5 minutes typically), GDM comes up fine. On Kubuntu, KDM never comes up and the PC freezes at blinking cursor. Same scenario is observed even if I boot from the (K)Ubuntu Edgy CD. by the way dapper works fine.
