@Sebastien : There is no .local/share/applications/.desktop file. I am

it is listing mp3 with totem witch is not the software running when

[Bug 117282] 2gb SD card not usable

2007-05-28 Thread Tom Hibbert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

I have a Kingston 2gb sd card, formatted on my camera (Sanyo DMX-CG6).
It will mount but I cannot read any files from it.

May 28 17:02:41 phoenix kernel: [ 2999.451901] SCSI device sdd: 4022272

$ sudo cfdisk /dev/sdd

$ fdisk -l /dev/sdd

Disk /dev/sdd: 2059 MB, 2059403264 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdd1 12861 2011014+ e W95 FAT16 (LBA)

I have also tried reformatting the card through gparted and using
mkfs.vfat directly.

Attempting to copy or open a file by any means results in a hung process
and

[ 6425.724244] usb 5-6: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and

appears in dmesg.

Of course the card works without issue in windows. (had to test to make sure i
hadnt been sold a clone card, absolutely no issue).
The problem also occured under Edgy, I dist-upgraded to feisty to see if it
would help. I will need to provision some hardware to be able to test on Gutsy,
as this is my main workstation and upgrading to feisty disrupted my workflow
for an entire day.

Hi, just got your message. I'm currently away from my computer but I'm
still working on this. I expect to do some more when I return next

you create a tiny FAT file system that shows the problem so I can test
stuff as I'm fixing it? If not I'd understand as well.

[Bug 117177] Re: fstab mtab system settings disagree on 2 drive computer

2007-05-28 Thread mancho42
On subsequent boots the MTAB assignments are not consistent - sometimes
/home is assigned as /dev/hda2, others as /dev/hdb2 - any changes made
to data in /home appears lost on a subsequent boot because the system
has decided to switch assignments between current and backup
drives/partitions!

[Bug 66032] Re: fsck.ext3: Unable to resolve

2007-05-28 Thread Eric Christiansen
I was able to resolve this problem.

/etc/fstab still had entries that corresponded to old partitions that I
had deleted. To fix this, I simply commented them out.

If you're dealing with a UUID mismatch, use sudo vol_id the
partition to figure out the correct UUID for each partition, so that
you can overwrite the incorrect UUIDs in fstab.

[Bug 61105] Re: Mouse jumps to center in (sdl?/opengl?) games

2007-05-28 Thread Rasmus Neckelmann
As I see it, it can either be caused by two things:

1. It's a problem with the applications. Many implement mouse movement in games
by for each game update resetting the mouse cursor to center of the screen -
this is suitable for tracking relative mouse movement (for instance in an FPS
game, you can roll your mouse for ever and ever (given a long enough chord :)),
and the player will continue to rotate - if the cursor wasn't reset to the
middle of the screen, the player would stop rotating when the cursor hit the
edge of the screen).
This should work fine, but it's easy to make a bug in a game where the input
loop is updated also when the application isn't focussed. Especially when using
a high-level library like SDL.

2. It's a problem with SDL. Maybe some SDL functions unexpectedly resets
the mouse cursor in some special cases.

It's weird that the bug isn't consistant on all system, though.

[Bug 109457] Re: Volume control doesn't fallow LFE

2007-05-28 Thread Premier
Hi, I have a problem that maybe this problem... its a little hard to
describe. I thought is was this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdeutils/+bug/58751 but it may
not be.

If you turn LFE all the way down, it works like expected. This all seems
to be related to LFE (Bass channel). Apparently, its able to bypass the
master volume, but PCM is not. so, my guess is, whatever audio backend
we all are using routes LFE incorrectly. When mute is on, the sound is
substantially different than with it off -- as if we are only hearing
the lower frequences. I didn't discover LFE until recently, and I would
like to have it work correctly. Incidentally, with LFE on, turning down
master volume seems to have little effect, but turning the master down
to zero effectively mutes it, even if you have LFE on.

[Bug 108795] Re: Mute Hotkey works but does not mute the sound

2007-05-28 Thread Premier
Hi, this might be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdeutils/+bug/58751

For me its closely related to LFE. The computer surely thinks the
sound is muted, however.

[Bug 117288] Proposal: grub should select last booted entry

[Bug 95606] Re: google earth does crash xorg on feisty

2007-05-28 Thread Helge Stenström
I have the same problem as Andrew Frank. I don't use Google Earth very
often, and have made a few changes to the system. They might be related.
Finally, I've got 1920x1200 resolution working on my PC with intel
graphics, by installing xserver-xorg-video-intel which replace the
package xserver-xorg-video-i810. I still have 915resolution installed; I
don't know if it's needed.

Back to Google Earth. The logo splash screen of Earth appears, then the desktop
crashes.
I'll attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

[Bug 88746] Re: USB devices are not recognized when having ehci_hcd modprobed

2007-05-28 Thread cs42
FYI, exactly the same this error appeared for me because of failing
hardware! Linux just recognized it earlier than Windows XP. In my case
it was an USB CF card reader which was operational in just 25% of the
time after upgrading from Edgy to Feisty. But after a while Windows XP
showed a similar behaviour.

Maybe Linux is more sensitive to failing hardware here (let it the board
or the USB devices). At least I wouldn't be too sure that it isn't some
hardware problem!

[Bug 117290] rescue mode doesn't offer MD devices for use as root partition

2007-05-28 Thread gavinmc
Public bug reported:

On a debian etch machine, we have 3 MD Raid devices. The root is a RAID
1 device atop an lvm. It got messed up and needed rescuing. Using the
Ubuntu server CD in rescue mode was great but with one minor problem.

Although the rescue system detected all three MD arrays and assembled
them without me even asking, when the system prompted to choose a
partition to mount as root, only the physical devices (/dev/sda1,
/dev/sda2, /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2, ...) were available. This meant you
couldn't mount the raid array as root (which it should have been).

Instead I switched to a command line, mounted it by hand under /mnt off
the initrd, did what I needed to and rebooted, but it would have been
much cleaner if /dev/md* were available to mount as root fs and I'm sure
that is probably the intention. LVM was not in use on the root in this
case, though I guess LVM devices should be made available too.

[Bug 117291] update-manager shows to few packages in its list when updating kernel

2007-05-28 Thread Caspar Clemens Mierau
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I think this bug is not related to the other missing changelog bugs.
update-manager reports the correct amount of available updates (e.g.
four when updating the kernel) but shows in its changelog list under
certain circumstances fewer (e.g. four in the same case). This might be
connected to the state of meta packages but definitely can confuse users
as you think packages are updated and you won't get the full
information. I'll attach two screenshots (sorry, in German, but you'll
get the point). One with the information that 8 packages are updated and
only 4 in the list and one of the download process where you see that
you get a more verbose list.

updates or having a complete changelog list even if the very changelog
entry for meta packages is nearly empty (which I'd prefer).

[Bug 105394] Re: Upstart needs some key pressed to show Enter Passphrase on boot / cryptsetup problem

2007-05-28 Thread Caspar Clemens Mierau
I can confirm this bug. It behaves nearly the same way:

I have encrypted swap und /home/user. When booting the message Starting
early crypto disks is displayed and in most cases I have to press some
keys to get the Enter Passphrase dialogue. If I don't do so I'll
sometimes have to wait minutes or the dialogue just doesn't show up.

This bug is really annoying as you think cryptsetup is completely broken
when booting for the first time.

Also running on feisty. Besides bressen a letter-key like deskribed
before changing the consoles a bit helps for me, too.

[Bug 20218] Re: compaq presario sleeps but doesn't wake up

2007-05-28 Thread Tresni
I'm hoping that by sleep people mean suspend, otherwise I'm barking up
the wrong tree. Anyway, if I attempt to suspend the computer it will
suspend fine on lid close. However when I open the lid it begins to
come back (drive spins etc) but then seems to go into what I think is a
kernel panic (cap lock light blinking, no response on anything.) Of
course this happens before the monitor kicks back on so I don't know for
certain.

Had to pull the power to get the machine to reboot. Then there was a
message on tty1 about not finding a restore image (sorry, I didn't write
it down.) Will try to duplicate and post more information.

2007-05-28 Thread mark williamson
I can confirm this problem for the standard Ubuntu alternate install
disk as well.

The problem is that that installer pauses at 85% throught to download
packages. Since my network connection to my router was active (but not
to the outside internet) the installer did not know that it cannot find
sources packages.

My solution was to physically remove the network cables so that the
machine had no network connection whatsoever and setup the network after
the installation had completed.

It would be nice to have a message to the user which told them what is
going on during the install.

[Bug 117294] openoffice on feisty 64-bit : wrong behaviour when copy/pasting cells from calc to writer

2007-05-28 Thread brazzmonkey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Copy/pasting cells from OOo Calc to OOo Writer behaves oddly on Feisty
64-bit : the pasted object always displays the extreme top left cells.
User then needs to manually edit the pasted object in order to scroll to
the proper cells.

Copy/pasting cells works fine in Feisty 32-bit (proper cells are
displayed), only 64-bit is affected. This issue has been discussed and
confirmed here : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=453265

No workaround except manual editing has been found yet. This may not be
related to OOo : maybe the way 32-bit applications are handled in a
64-bit environment is the culprit (only an assumption...)

OS : Feisty 64-bit (clean installation)
Affected application : Openoffice.org
reproducible : always

step to reproduce :
- open Calc and Writer on Feisty 64bit
- fill some random data in random Calc cells, say, A11, A12, A13
- select those cells, then copy them using Ctrl+C
- go to Writer paste them using Ctrl-V
- pasted object has correct dimensions, but displayed cells are in fact A1, A2
and A3 - this is the actual issue, not present on Feisty 32-bit which does
display A11-A13 cells
- edit the object by double-clicking it, scroll down to A11-A13 cells,
- end object edition by clicking anywhere on Writer page.
- you're done.

This is a very annoying bug when you need to copypaste thing 40-50 times
a day. This actually prevents me from using Feisty 64 on a daily basis.

[Bug 117298] Installer pauses at 85% when downloading package lists - seems to hang causing the user to panic

2007-05-28 Thread mark williamson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Using Alternate Install CD the installer appears to hang at 85%.

The alt-F4 terminal shows the installer is trying to download package
lists. The installer does this even when I tell it to configure the
network at a later time. Clearly the installer is retesting to see if it
can get a network connection and then tries to download the package
lists if it can get connectivity.

The problem is that the installer sits at 85% until the package lists
timeout causing a long delay with no information to the user. This cause
the user to think the install has failed. If the user has a slow
internet connection this takes even longer as the packages start to
arrive very slowly.

My workaround is to unplug the machine from the network when installing
and configure the network once the process is finished.

Repeated in bug number 104713 with the Kubuntu install cd.

Suggested solutions:
A) ask the user if they want to download the package lists - we have a slow
internet connection and I don't want these downloaded on install.
B) if the package lists must be downloaded send the output which appears on the
Alt-F4 terminal to the user so that they are aware of what the installer is
trying to do.
C) Don't try to use the network if the user has chosen to leave it
un-configured earlier in the install process.

by typing 'aptitude install totem-xine' in a console.

Then, it will report Error while writing to disc. Try a lower speed.. No

This sounds like a symptom of how you enabled the binary drivers. Did you use

restricted-manager will also fill in AllowGLXWithComposite and
AddARGBGLXVisuals . It is the recommend as the way to install the NVIDIA

(PS: you almost certainly don't need Option Accel True as the driver
defaults to that anyway).

2007-05-28 Thread Eugenia Loli-Queru
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 41335 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/41335

No, it doesn't help. Totem-xine is not maintained as well as totem-
gstreamer is, which the Gnome default. DVD playback must be implemented
for totem-gstreamer too. Personally, as a user I don't give a monkey
that a format is restricted or not. Canonical must pay the necessary
royalties to have it legally implemented. There is a way to do it
legally, so why Canonical doesn't? I wouldn't mind paying $10 or even
$30 to buy Ubuntu if it was to have me a *number* of such headaches
fixed for me.

Heck, instead of actually buying a commercial Ubuntu version, it should
be the free version and then whenever we hit the wall with a legal
problem, a firefox window opens to a special page where we can pay $1 or
$2 (it doesn't cost more than that per issue resolved) to get our issues
fixed. This way the main Ubuntu remains free, and whoever needs extra
conveniences, can pay up! I don't oppose this at all because it's better
than not having a solution or suggesting a version of totem that it's
not properly maintained anymore.

[Bug 103223] Re: X doesn't load in Feisty (nVidia FX5500 PCI)

2007-05-28 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Rashid:
That log is not from the open source nv driver - it says you are using the
NVIDIA binary driver (AND you have sometimes problematic TrippleBuffer option
set).

Is this bug about the open source nv driver or the closed source NVIDIA
binary driver?

2007-05-28 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Thank you for the bug report. Also, please answer these questions:

* Is this crash reproducible?
* If so, which are the steps that lead to it?
* Can you attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files?

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

[Bug 117304] Probelm in database and mailmerge

2007-05-28 Thread I Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org2

I first used openoffice suite when I installed kubuntu 6.01, I was very
impressed. The mail merge worked fine with it used a data base in microsoft
access. So much so I down loaded version 2.02 for windows which also works fine
using access's  database.
I have now upgraded to kubuntu 7.04, which did not install your data base
package, I down loaded the package from the kubuntu repositories this was your
latest version 2.2. Now it only creates a version of the database in table
form, the field order is mixed up. I tried to create a new database in table
form I created the fields OK. I entered data ok, but when I tried to save them
it did not allow me to. I really like office so can you help me with a
solution.

[Bug 92599] Re: [nvidia-glx] unable to set proper screen refresh rate due to DynamicTwinView

2007-05-28 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
For anyone stumbling across this problem, the reason for the behaviour
of the DynamicTwinView is described on
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/appendix-d.html
:

Option DynamicTwinView boolean

Enable or disable support for dynamically configuring TwinView on this X
screen. When DynamicTwinView is enabled (the default), the refresh rate
of a mode (reported through XF86VidMode or XRandR) does not correctly
report the refresh rate, but instead is a unique number such that each
MetaMode has a different value. This is to guarantee that MetaModes can
be uniquely identified by XRandR.

When DynamicTwinView is disabled, the refresh rate reported through
XRandR will be accurate, but NV-CONTROL clients such as nvidia-settings
will not be able to dynamically manipulate the X screen's MetaModes.
TwinView can still be configured from the X config file when
DynamicTwinView is disabled.

Default: DynamicTwinView is enabled.

[Bug 78017] Re: firehol no longer starts on Feisty

I got around by doing the %q = %b replacement and adding execute-

sed 's/%q/%b/g' /lib/firehol/firehol TMPFILE mv TMPFILE
/lib/firehol/firehol
chmod 744 /lib/firehol/firehol

my firehol.conf exactly like jMehdi's above I have been testing some
