[Bug 122023] The live CD should somehow prompt for language/country/keymap for blind people
Public bug reported: The graphical boot menu is not accessible to blind users, and thus it's very difficult for them to choose the language and keymap at that time. When any accessibility feature is enabled, language and keymap should be prompted again once the needed accessibility engines are started. For instance, for someone that is using speech synthesis, - boot the liveCD - press F5 (accessibility) - choose Screen Reader - really boot the CD after some time the gnome desktop starts, but it is all in english with an american keyboard, and it may even be impossible to non-english people to just find out where to configure that. What should happen instead is something like: - boot the liveCD - press F5 (accessibility) - choose Screen Reader - really boot the CD - accessibility engines start - user is prompted for the language and keymap - accessibility engines adapt to the new language (speech synthesis switches to french for instance) - a localized gnome desktop starts. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- The live CD should somehow prompt for language/country/keymap for blind people https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 93381] Re: [Feisty] Name column width in nautilus
Third... I have a working solution. I just got the patch 12_list- view_expand.patch from Debian's unstable version 2.18.1-3, copied inside Ubunu's Feisty source directory version 2.18.1-0ubuntu1 at debian/patches, compiled and everything was fixed. AFAIK it would only lack a debian/changelog update to finish the fix and distribute it. I am not aware of Ubunu's policies with packages (I come from Debian) but I believe this should bet applied since there are dozens of people complaining about it and it really breaks the smoothness of the rest of Ubuntu desktop experience. [Bug 117773] Re: Regression: Kernel 2.6.20-16 breaks Smart-battery ACPI support
The fast solution is described at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.20/+bug/117773/comments/15. Just copy i2c_ec.ko of the .15 kernel-version over the new one. This will also work for future 'security' updates of the kernel as long as the respective ABI is stable, i.e. who knows how long. The real problem is that the Ubuntu kernel team releases untested non- security patches as part of a security update. That is the work of amateurs (amateur is about the nicest word I can find for it ;-). -- Regression: Kernel 2.6.20-16 breaks Smart-battery ACPI support https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/117773 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 122024] orca should automatically get started when braille is activated
Public bug reported: When booting e.g. the 7.10 tribe1 CD, whatever the way braille gets activated (boot menu, brltty= trick or USB auto-detection), orca should automatically get started. For instance, you can try on a box that has a serial port: - boot the liveCD - press F5 (accessibility) - choose Braille Terminal - really boot the CD When it prompts for the braille device configuration, - answer s to the kind of connection (serial) - answer 0 to the number of the serial port - answer vs to the device type - then it starts the gnome desktop On the serial port, you'll notice this: CREEN NOT IN TEXT MODE. That means that brltty is correctly started, but that orca wasn't started and hence a blind user can't read the gnome desktop. Other ways to start braille that should be supported are as follows: - plug a USB braille device - just let boot the liveCD without typing anything at boot menu - udev detects the USB braille device and starts brltty - boot the liveCD - press F6 - type brltty=vs,ttyS0 - really boot the CD - brltty automatically gets started ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- orca should automatically get started when braille is activated https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122024 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 85488] Re: some usb_devices fault if usb_suspend enabled
Most problems are thought out at least once before people start curtly responding well it's an incompatibility with XYZ and we can't do anything unless they fix XYZ and this is what we think is the best way of fixing it -- summing things up elegantly does take some work. (Performing Google searches under site:lkml.org are always a good place to start.) As for the broken devices -- that's inevitable. From what I recall, there is a mechanism within a certain proprietary OS which holds a significant market share that says to the user, Sorry, we can't suspend this computer because device XYZ is preventing it from happening; disconnect it if you want to suspend. To me, I suspect the best way of handling the situation is not a blacklist, but rather a whitelist -- only the components are safe to suspend on should be suspended. If a driver/device does not support suspend, then don't suspend it (at the driver/module level) and tell the user that s/he must disconnect the device if they want USB_SUSPEND. (And if the module is untested, or supports hardware that both does and does not suspend properly, then make it a kernel or runtime config whether that driver/module should use USB_SUSPEND. And add a way of configuring whether devices should be suspended if they're unknown...) Of course, depending on how USB_SUSPEND works, that might mean USB_SUSPEND would be useless if so much as one device is incompatible... but that might have to be a trade-off for this sort of thing. That said, blacklists tend to be more forward-thinking, IMO... (don't treat a device special unless we have to). For something like USB_SUSPEND which saves power and is useful but isn't crucial to a device's functioning, I suspect it would be better to use a whitelist at the expense of USB_SUSPEND being applied to more devices. Assuming that is possible, which I am not sure about. [Bug 80893] Re: [Feisty] Inaudible audio upon resuming from suspend-to-disk
Also confirming this bug for Thinkpad R52 running Fiesty, kernel 2.6.20.16. Hibernate and Suspend both killed the sound; restarting did not help. Booting in Windows XP Professional was fine -- the sound still worked without additional driver download. The HIBERNATE_MODE=platform seemed to do the trick. [Bug 93381] Re: [Feisty] Name column width in nautilus
ok it seems somewhat difficult to dupe those, because they are under heavy usage. I add a semi complete bug list to all of them. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: nautilus Now in Feisty the behavior of nautilus regarding calculating the column width has changed. previously the first column (aka Name) would have been made as wide as needed to show the longest file name in the current directory. Now that seems to be superseded by showing all columns in window even when this means filenames are *not* completly visible. This has the result in changing the width of Name column after every directory change. The last column (in my case owner) therefore seems allways to be much bigger then needed. + + + =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= + + EDIT + + =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= + + Here is a semi complete list of duplicates: + + https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/94014 + https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/89031 + + http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=422563 + + http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419343 + http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=410361 + http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=416628 + http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=318725 -- [Feisty] Name column width in nautilus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93381 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
