[Bug 153119] Re: Capture quality problematic on Dell Latitude D630

2007-10-16 Thread slasher-fun
I can confirm this bug, that also appears on Edgy: the sound coming
from my microphone is so low that I have to speak very close to it if I
want to have something audible. All volumes are at 100% level. I don't
have this problem on MS Windows XP, the sound level of the microphone is
normal.

[Bug 151168] Re: memory leak with ring

2007-10-16 Thread Danny Baumann
Although I'm obviously biased (as the one who wrote ring), I have to say that I
really, really doubt there is a leak that may fill several hundred megabytes of
memory inside ring.
Besides the usual boilerplate code that every compiz plugin has, there is only
one place of allocation where a 8 byte structure is allocated for each window
in the ring. So even if it wasn't freed correctly (which it is here), it would
take ages to fill up memory with that allocation, unless you have a really
absurd amount of windows in the ring.
The second place where stuff is allocated from ring is the window title display
(which is also freed just fine here) ... if you want to check that, just
disable either the window title display or the text plugin.

For me, the issue sounds like a driver problem, just as sampsa wrote
before me.

[Bug 110534] Re: xchat-gnome crashes

2007-10-16 Thread WebMan
I am having the same problem as above. I used to use xchat under debian,
but switched to ubuntu with my new PC a few months ago. I've not been
able to use it to connect to the freenode #ubuntu channel since.

I run xchat-gnome from the command line, and it starts up ok, connects
to freenode, sends my nick password / etc.

Then I get the channel selection window, if I type in the channel name (ubuntu)
and click join channel, both the main windows and the join channel window die,
and I get:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xchat-gnome

(xchat-gnome:25886): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strsplit: assertion `string != NULL'
failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

as the output in the terminal.

I have attached the file from /var/crash as well

It would be helpful to be able to use irc I'll try and use some
other irc clients...

[Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards

2007-10-16 Thread Emmanuel Touzery
i also saw that, with moving mouse cursor on a radeon 7000/VE.
since i read about it happening when opening windows (for me it happened
several times when switching workspaces, i'm using the wall desktop plugin for
that, but maybe also a window was opening in the background, not sure), and
since some people mentioned that increasing AGP aperture helped, i thought it
might be too little texture memory to store all the windows? I tried increasing
my AGP aperture in the BIOS (from 64 to 128Mb), I'll see if it helps.

[Bug 153186] powernowd doesn't start with init script

2007-10-16 Thread Bremm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: powernowd

Since I installed Xubuntu 6.10 amd64, powernowd init script doesn't work
fine. I used always start it with a workaround using a silly bash
script. Now I had time to investigate why the right way doesn't work
(and never worked). So:

:. I searched /etc/default/powernowd and I didn't find it;

:. With 'joe' I made by myself the file above and put there just
OPTIONS=-q;

:. I tried to start by 'sudo service powernowd start' and it didn't
start, but: /etc/default/powernowd: 1: -q: not found;

OK, powernowd is mocking me... So i tried with /usr/sbin/powernowd -q
instead of the procedure above. Again, I ran it and:

$ sudo service powernowd start
 * Starting powernowd... [ OK ]

$ ps ax | grep power
 8571 ?SNs0:00 /usr/sbin/powernowd -q
 8601 pts/1S+ 0:00 grep power

Ta-da, it works! Well, I have no clues...

rt73 (legacy from cvs) are working.

rt73usb (from rt2x00 new driver), include with gutsy, are sources of
troubles (see bug #139070).
rt2x00 cvs from serialmonkey doesn't compile anymore on gutsy (because
of changes in API, made in linux 2.6.23).

So I think we need to close this bug for rt61 (and other legacy), and
follow bug #139070 for rt73usb.

[Bug 153188] 7.10 Release candidate starts with black screen

2007-10-16 Thread mek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I tested my PC (running now with Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty) with 7.10 Gutsy
release candidate Live CD(downloaded on Oct. 12th at Swedish site).
Kernel starts ok, but just when the Gnome should start, the whole screen
goes black and stays black, no matter what I try. I'd like to be sure
that my display works with Gutsy, that's why I tested with live-CD.

Intel Dual Core E2140 processor, with integrated Intel® Graphics Media
Accelerator X3000 (Intel® GMA X3000) and my screen is 15 Philips LCD-TV

bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?ctn=15PF9936/12scy=gbslg=ENGgrp=TV_GRcat=FLAT_TV_CAsct=LCD_SMALL_10_20_SU).
The resolution of screen is ordinary 1024x768, 60 hz. The screen just
notices, that the input video signal cannot be shown.

[Bug 153187] mouse cursor disappears after testing resolution with nv driver

2007-10-16 Thread Exquisite Dead Guy
Public bug reported:

When I run displayconfig-gtk, about a third of the time when switching
resolutions and clicking the Test button, the mouse cursor will not be
visible on the screen with the OK/Cancel that pops up to test. If I hit
cancel to go back to the old resolution, the mouse cursor will still be
gone. No matter what I do, logout, etc I can't get the cursor to come
back, I have to reboot.

This happens while using the nv driver.

Thanks,
EDG

To clarify: the machine still responds to the mouse, it's not losing
mouse support completely, just the displaying of the cursor. If I can
find a button blindly, you can see it going into a mouseover state,
and it responds to clicking ,etc.

[Bug 152254] Re: Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty Beta: REGRESSION: Laptop won't hibernate (but crashes)

2007-10-16 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I will add to this one that I tested this several times and it
consistently crashes.

When I ask to hibernate and get a black screen with a blinking cursor,
after a while of nothing happening I cant shift between text-mode
terminals, but can't login : getty is probably already dead. Can't do
anything but shift between consoles, event the Magic SysRq keys don't
work anymore. If shifting to [Alt-F7], X display, I get a completely
black screen (no cursor anymore) and from then on everything's dead,
can't do anything but kill power.

Latest RC updates didn't bring any improvement on this.

Phone is seen, trusted and discoverable by other devices, but memory

P.S. Just checked that synchronization with Evolution using Multisync

[Bug 153193] gnome-panel crashes randomly

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I don't know what's going on but gnome-panel crashes with randomness
every day. I removed the recently-used files and it didn't help.
There is no one thing that I do to make it crash, it just crashes at

one. A reboot clears the crashes for awhile, but they always come back.

[Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI cards

2007-10-16 Thread Ramesh Dharan
I very much doubt the AGP aperture has anything to do with it. FWIW, my
AGP aperture has been at 256MB the whole time.

The crashes seem to be entirely unpredictable in nature. Several of the
times it has happened, I have only had one window open, with no wobbling
or cube transitions or anything else crazy going on - e.g. I was just
clicking on an OK button, and it would freeze

[Bug 78690] Re: [Feisty] bluez-utils update hangs on stopping bluetooth service

2007-10-16 Thread Antti Juvonen
My update from Feisty to Gutsy release candidate by update-manager -d
-command was jammed by this bug, package installation hanging at
Stopping bluetooth services. I didn't want to do a clear install so I
messed around and tried to find a way to get forward. In the end,
killing dpkg -process allowed for the update to proceed.

After that, there came ~15 error messages about missing dependencies,
because of the failed package install, but nothing critical.

I was able to finish the update and rebooted. Afterwards everything is
good except for update manager complaining about the broken packages.
Because I don't have any bluetooth hardware, I disabled the bluetooth
script using the tip by Kai Scroeder earlier in this report.

little hack to bring the system into a consistent state:
i put an exit 0 at the beginning of /etc/init.d/bluetooth

After that I rebooted, and ran sudo apt-get install -f which fixed the update.
Hope this helps somebody! : )

right most edge of the screen. The Navigator toolbar's handle appears
much further to the left, just after the last icon of the previous
toolbar.

I would like to place the Navigator toolbar in the left most position at
the top, with the other toolbars following just after it on the same
line. Kontact will allow me to drag and drop the toolbar into the
position described, but upon changing to a different Kontact component,
or exiting and restarting Kontact, the Navigator toolbar's position
changes. It usually appears on it's own new line, below the component-
dependent toolbar(s).

I attempted to alter the placement of the Navigator toolbar by deleting
the SpacerAction from it, the effect of that is that all the icons
dissapear from the Navigator toolbar, leaving only its handle. I also
attempted to manipulate the the Navigator toolbar's position by manually
editing the ~/.kde/share/config/kontactrc file. under the [MainWindow
Toolbar navigatorToolBar] heading, but this too was unhelpful.
Specifically I tried removing the NewLine=true line and altering the
Offset value, but these changes did not have a positive effect.

Finally I tried removing both the SpacerAction and the ActionList:
navigator_actionlist items from the Navigator toolbar, and manually
added the icons for the six Kontact components, all using the Configure
Toolbars option within Kontact. Even after manually populating the
toolbar in this manner, I could not get the Navigator toolbar to stay in
the position I placed it. I also tried restoring the Navigator toolbar
to its default state, using the Defaults button in the Configure
Toolbars option, but this simply restores the Navigator toolbar to its
original right-aligned state.

Comparing with a different machine, still running Kontact 1.2.4 on KDE
3.5.6 / Edgy, I am able to place the Navigator toolbar where I desire on
that installation, and the toolbar stays put. The only obvious
difference is that the Navigator toolbar on that machine has on it only
ActionList: navigator_actionlist, not the SpacerAction item.

[Bug 134858] Re: update-manager freezes due to defunct dpkg process

2007-10-16 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
I'm using gnome-terminal. But please note, that I've noticed this on
plain text console as well (without even starting X/gdm). Because of
this fact, I don't think that it's terminal emulation related question.
Another question: I can't stop apt-get temporary with CTRL-Z (even
before the freeze) to continue with command 'fg' later. Dunno it's
related or not, but I think it can be important to note here as well.

[Bug 153195] ksoftirqd/0 always using about 30% cpu time

2007-10-16 Thread Allen Petersen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

After upgrading from feisty to gutsy I noticed that ksoftirqd on CPU 0
is always using about 30% of of that CPU even when the system is
otherwise idle. I have upgraded the 2.6.22 kernel about 3 times over the
past 2 weeks and it has always had the same results. I don't remember
seeing this with 2.6.20 (with feisty)

I have a MSI P6N SLI Platinum (NF650ISLI) motherboard with an Intel
Penduam Duo E2160.

I just patched to the latest kernel (2.6.22-14-generic) and it has been
up for 91min and the ksofirqd/0 process has already used 28min of CPU
time.

[Bug 152449] Re: HTTPS not working with Konqueror 3.5.8

2007-10-16 Thread Tvrtko Ursulin
It's the same for me with the latest updates. I am attaching two new
screenshots. First one is when I open the URL directly, and the second
one when I get to in steps. Only the first page I visit is then secured
with SSL.

There are no error messages in the konsole from where I started
konqueror.

When submitting this bug report initially launchpad.net gave me an error
when I tried to submit it which I suspected might be related with the
SSL problem.

I'll try removing ~/.kde ie. trying with a clean user because my $HOME
is inherited from 7.04 later today.

Workaround for fellow Totem users - Hit alt-f2, type gstreamer-

Probably won't be properly accelerated but hey, it works!

I thought this bug was really fixed, but I still have a very little
problem. If I open some image with EOG, the program automatically fits
the image size to the screen size between panels (if it is bigger) but
now it does but taking the screen size as there was no bottom panel. May
it be a bug of Compiz or Eog? Mmm, I think I should have taken a
screenshot, maybe tomorrow that I will see my computer again.

Thanks for your effort.

[Bug 153203] panel wrongfully appears on top of fullscreen windows when switching workspaces

2007-10-16 Thread oh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When switching _TO_ a workspace with a fullscreen window, if you are
switching FROM a workspace where the panel is visible AND any window in
that workspace is focused, the panel will not disappear and it will
overlap the window which is supposed to be fullscreen on the panel you
are switching TO. The panels do not go away from the fullscreen
workspace until the fullscreen window is manually clicked/focused.
REPRODUCE: fullscreen xterm on workspace 1, move ot workspace 2, click
on panel, move to workspace 1 and see panel where it should not be
visible.

This is gutsy, updated/upgraded via apt-get yesterday, running on a
lenovo thinkpad x60 w/intel 945 graphics. OpenGL programs work nicely
on this machine, with compiz they are somewhat slower. I run the normal
X server, not Xgl, since when I enable Xgl everything except panning
between workspaces gets very slow (wobbling, for instance).

I have enabled extra desktop effects - wobbling, panning workspace
switching (not the cube). I run many workspaces and switch between them
with ctrl-f1, ctrl-f2 etc.

I usually dedicate some workspaces to running applications in full-
screen (not maximized, but full-screen) mode - an xterm for irc on one
workspace, a fullscreen firefox on another, etc. Normally I have a
desktop shortcut (shift-ctrl-enter) to toggle fullscreen, so i use it a
lot.

2007-10-16 Thread oh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When running a window in fullscreen mode, the workspace switcher
animation (in the middle of the screen) does not fade properly when
switching _TO_ a currently focused fullscreen window. It disappears when
it should start to fade down. REPRODUCE: Open one fullscreen (not
maximized! fullscreen!) each on workspace 1 and 2. click or otherwise
focus the xterm in workspace 1. Move from workspace 1 to workspace 2 and
watch the animation fade nicely. do not click anything. move back to
workspace 1, notice that the nice animation is gone.

[Bug 134858] Re: update-manager freezes due to defunct dpkg process

2007-10-16 Thread LGB [Gábor Lénárt]
Maybe I'm completly wrong, but can it be related to bug #148806? I tried
to 'strace -p pid-of-apt' and it blocked on a read() syscall, however
I don't know on which file ;-( Later I will try to strace all of my apt-

assign a file to the file descriptor reported by strace.

[Bug 153206] mouse response sluggish in fullscreen firefox

2007-10-16 Thread oh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

REPRODUCE: Open fullscreen (not maximized!) firefox, go to a webpage
which fills a couple of screens vertically so you get a vertical
scrollbar. go to a text only page so that you know that the page itself
is not a resource hog. NOW: 1) use the left mouse button to click and
drag the vertical toolbar. on my system there is a ~1sec lag before the
window reacts to the mouse click at all. 2) click and hold on some text,
wiggle your mouse to select text. notice the ~1 second lag here too.
very inconvenient. switching the window out of fullscreen mode makes it
react like normal, quite instantly.

Normally I have a
desktop shortcut (shift-ctrl-enter) to toggle fullscreen, so i use it a
lot.

[Bug 153205] annoying bug with alt-tab switching on a workspace with at least one fullscreen window

2007-10-16 Thread oh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

on workspaces with one fullscreen window and several regular windows
(possibly hidden behind the fullscreen window), pressing alt-tab to
switch windows will show a black screen when the fullscreen window is in
focus in the switcher.

[Bug 153204] flickering and strangeness in full screen mode firefox while interacting with input fields

2007-10-16 Thread oh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Whenever a pulldown menu is activated (i dont know the right word here)
the screen flickers and the menu does not work. Sometime the entire
screen is filled with garbage momentarily. Other times a large diagonal
bar flickers over the entire screen. REPRODUCE: use the firefox search
bar to search for a couple of words starting with aa. Then move into
the search box and type an a and possibly arrow down key. this should
pop up a list of previous search terms, but instead just causes
flickering and strangeness. by moving the window out of fullscreen mode
(into maximized state only, for example) everything works nicely.

This is gutsy, updated/upgraded via apt-get yesterday, running on a
lenovo thinkpad x60 w/intel 945 graphics. OpenGL programs work nicely

Working after installing linux-backports-modules.

Now, this solution is acceptable for people who are determinated enough
to search through forums/bug database. What about common folks?

The number of the comments in this thread and the number of duplicates
is a clear evidence that this bug is a serious and common one. As
Gabriel noted earlier - this can be PR disaster. For me this issue is
critical enough to delay release but it is up to the Ubuntu folks to
make their judgement.

[Bug 147668] Re: No way to browse applications' manuals

2007-10-16 Thread Luca Ferretti
 1. Blindly listing documents by application name without a coherent
categorisation means that regular users are just going to stop reading
the help and go somewhere else.

Matthew, please note that the Advanced Topics document starts with
this phrase: The Ubuntu help system contains a lot of documentation,
not all of which you see in the table of contents. You can, of course,
use the search feature, but as well as you allow to browse man and info
pages by category (Advance Topics-Terminal Commands References //
Advanced Topics-GNU Info Pages), I think we should allow to browse
XML/Docbook manuals by category too.

Just a real case example: the Italian GNOME team provides guidelines for
Italian translation. I wrote those using XML/Docbook, packed inside a
tgz that works like the gnome-user-docs source package: run
configure/make/make install and read in Yelp. It's an external and
additional document, of course, and it's useful only for Italian
translators: there is no interest to merge it in the structure of Ubuntu
documentation system. This to explain that the GNOME help system can be
used to provide more then application manual.

So, IMHO, hiding the index for XML/Docbook documents is a bad idea: it
should be available near the man in info index. You can of course use a
different default approach to help users to browse, but any
documentation system needs an index.

 2. Quite a lot of the documents listed in the standard yelp indexes
are totally irrelevant to the vast majority of desktop users and
confuse them rather than assist them (e.g. GNOME Documentation XSLT
 Manual).

This is a different issue, not related to provide an index for
XML/Docbook. Could be solved in deb package build, splitting doc stuff.
However, note also that XSTL manual is listed under Other documents
category, the proper category for other stuff: if you are browsing
here, you should know that you can find odd stuff :-)

And just to note that both the major Gnome manuals (accessibility
guide and user guide) are incorporated into the layout. The
Accessibility guide now has its own entry.

system-admin-guide guide seems still out to me.

As well as manuals from the new gnome-devel-docs module. maybe this is
not yet included in Ubuntu, but it provide useful sfuff: an overview of
GNOME Desktop for developers, the HIG, the style guide for manuals and a
simple guide to integrate non-GNOME apps in GNOME Desktop (application
menu, mime type, icons...)

If there are specific pages which you believe should be included in the
current setup, and aren't, please file
 a bug on ubuntu-docs.

I could like something like the attached HTML for Advance Topics page
(note the All Installed Manuals section, come from my previous
considerations); links should open related pages on standard gutsy
system, except stuff from gnome-devel-docs (platform-overview and hig-
book).

But it's too late for gutsy, so I'll propose it in the next 6 months.
