[Bug 154863] Re: installer crashed installing Grub

2007-12-12 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Looking at your log file there are quite a few error
messages along the lines of Error reading inode 718. - are you certain
that your hard drive is good? Thanks in advance.

[Bug 124023] Re: X server I830WaitLpRing crash with PyMOL and direct rendering on Intel 965Q

2007-12-12 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks for confirming this issue is now fixed. It sounds like it was
the same as bug 119977.

The other issue, where 3d windows don't get updated properly when
dragged, that sounds like bug 116793 so I'm going to assume that's
covered. Please feel free to add additional information to that bug for
your case, or open a new bug if you suspect it's a separate issue.

[Bug 163708] Re: n-m doesn't recognize ethernet on bootup

2007-12-12 Thread Peter Cordes
It would probably also help to know what hardware you have.

Maybe attach a copy of your /var/log/dmesg, which will contain all the
messages about your kernel detecting your ethernet hardware.

If you can poke around with mii-tool or ethtool (see if they show the
NIC has a link when it boots up, or if the kernel doesn't know what's
going on, not just network manager). Some drivers log to the kernel log
(which syslog saves in /var/log/kern.log) when an ethernet link
appears/disappears.

[Bug 87177] Re: Feisty 20070222 shows two USB icons

2007-12-12 Thread GauteHope
Hello

I am having the same problem as sergem. I am running the Gutsy Gibbon:
Linux qwerzila 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

If I have my harddrive mounted while turning off the computer it shows
up twice when I start it again, the harddrive would need to be turned on
as I boot up. The behavior when trying to unmount is the same as
described in the other comments here. I can unmount one of the icons,
the other stays. When I plug it in again the second icon shows up again.

It does not have any records in fstab.
Unlike some of the other reports I can only register showing up one time in
dmesg. The USB device is /dev/sdc, it shows up again on the bottom, but note
that i unmounted, unplugged, plugged and mounted again one time after the
reboot.

[Bug 47848] Re: should warn at partitioning stage if /boot is on XFS

2007-12-12 Thread David Cuthbert
Hm, it's possible that this is no longer needed (if Ubuntu is using grub
 0.97). According to http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/faq.html#grubwork
:

Q: Does GRUB work with XFS?

There is native XFS filesystem support for GRUB starting with version
0.91 and onward. Unfortunately, GRUB used to make incorrect assumptions
about being able to read a block device image while a filesystem is
mounted and actively being written to, which could cause intermittent
problems when using XFS. This has reportedly since been fixed, and the
0.97 version (at least) of GRUB is apparently stable.

[Bug 175904] Re: Firefox-3.0 window moves to current workspace

2007-12-12 Thread Fabien Tassin
Strange, it's working fine for me, I also hate to see windows moving
against my will.

Could you try manually, i.e.:

1/ open a shell in workspace 1
2/ open firefox 3 in workspace 2
3/ in the shell, type : firefox-3.0 about:plugins

do you see the firefox moved in workspace 1 ?

Also, in Firefox preferences / Tabs, do you open new pages in new
windows or in new tabs ? (i do tabs)

Another question, when the window is moved, do you see the requested
page opened somewhere (either visible or last tab) ? or do you see a
blank tab instead (about:blank) ?

[Bug 173861] Re: [CVE-2007-5503 security fix regression] firefox crashes after upgrading to libcairo2 1.4.10-1ubuntu4.1

2007-12-12 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Here is a reproducer for the crasher, not the rendering bug:

$ sudo apt-get install xfonts-bolkhov-75dpi gnome-terminal firefox
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config (and enable bitmapped fonts by
default)
$ sudo fc-cache -fv
$ gconftool-2 --set /apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/use_system_font
--type bool false
$ gconftool-2 --set /apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/font --type string
Courier 10
$ gnome-terminal --window-with-profile=Default

Note, this courier is not from xfonts-75dpi but from xfonts-bolkhov-
75dpi. Might have to coax gnome-terminal into crashing by trying to
change the font.

Can get firefox to crash too by changing using:
Fonts for: Western
Sans-serif and serif fonts to 'Serene'
fixed width to 'Courier'
Default character encoding to be ISO-8859-1

For the rendering bug on a Gutsy desktop:
$ sudo apt-get install xfonts-bolkhov-75dpi
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config (and enable bitmapped fonts by
default)
$ sudo fc-cache -fv

Now go to System/Preferences/Appearance/Fonts

Change the Window Title Font to Serene. Pre-patched libcairo2 will show
the 'Preview text', patched libcairo2 will not.

[Bug 159363] Re: Ubiquity-frontend-gtk shouldn't depend on metacity window manager

2007-12-12 Thread Colin Watson
It's like this because the only-ubiquity installation mode (which is
likely to become the default in Hardy) includes a minimal display-
manager-like implementation that needs to start a window manager, and
currently relies on metacity in the case where the GTK frontend is to be
used. In order to weaken this dependency, an alternative implementation
using a different window manager needs to be provided. Mantas, could you
please do this? The file in question is bin/ubiquity-dm.

[Bug 175982] Kdesktop in Kubuntu Hardy shows / icons rather than icons from /home/'usr'/Desktop

2007-12-12 Thread aodhagan
Public bug reported:

Did an apt-get upgrade in the last week and upon rebooting discovered
that the icons represented on the desktop are for the root folder rather
than from the desktop folder of the logged in user. Haven't been able
to isolate problem package because updates usually include 10-20
packages. You cannot alter, drop files into, delete any of the folders
due to incorrect permissions. The icons represent /bin /home /lib /sbin
/sys /proc etc. When browsing the file system using Dolphin and
Konqueror the correct files are still in the Desktop folder. Would love
to help debug this but don't have any idea where to start. This seems
to be the same bug reported at bugs.kde.org #152907 on 11/26/02007.

[Bug 150690] Re: gnome-panel workspace switcher less functional with compiz

2007-12-12 Thread Oliver Gerlich
I can confirm at least the second point of the original bug report
(cycle virtual desktops by using the mouse wheel on the switcher
applet) - the wheel apparently no longer has any effect on the desktop
switcher applet if Desktop Effects are enabled. In my opinion switching
on Visual Effects should not change the actual functionality of the
desktop :-) and personally I would prefer it if the taskbar switcher
would with compiz the same as without compiz.

[Bug 3593] Re: vnc4server uses wrong font path

2007-12-12 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
gutsy vncserver 3.3.7-14ubuntu1

When I start the server, it looks like it's ok:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ vncserver -geometry 800x600 -depth 16 :4
New 'X' desktop is slabanderi:4
Starting applications specified in /etc/X11/Xsession
Log file is /home/rhk/.vnc/slabanderi:4.log
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

but it writes this in the logfile

12/12/07 23:27:11 Xvnc version 3.3.7 - built May 24 2007 12:47:11
12/12/07 23:27:11 Copyright (C) 2002-2003 RealVNC Ltd.

12/12/07 23:27:11 All Rights Reserved.
12/12/07 23:27:11 See http://www.realvnc.com for information on VNC
12/12/07 23:27:11 Desktop name 'X' (slabanderi:4)
12/12/07 23:27:11 Protocol version supported 3.3
12/12/07 23:27:11 Listening for VNC connections on TCP port 5904

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

and as soon as I try to connect to server, it prints this in the console (on
the server side):
channel 2: open failed: connect failed: Connection refused

I also tried the -fp /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/ and now the log file prints:
12/12/07 23:33:25 Listening for VNC connections on TCP port 5904
failed to set default font path ''
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

This seems to help (at least until reboot): sudo ln -s
/usr/share/fonts/X11 /usr/share/X11/fonts

So this bug still seems to exist in Gutsy..

[Bug 62511] Re: dumps core on SIGQUIT

2007-12-12 Thread Ben Collins
As noted, SIGQUIT as a crashdump signal is not a bug in itself. It's
also not a bug that SIGQUIT is handled by the crashdump helper (since
it's designed to be invoked any time a core dump would occur). If apport
wants to ignore this signal, that's great.

If the bug is that apport is too slow to ignore the signal (as the user
is concerned about response time), then that's something that apport
will have to be faster about, or the user will have to disable apport
usage.

RE: [Bug 163290] Re: Problems DHCP server

2007-12-12 Thread akke

Well, someone in the Dutch Ubuntuforum wrote a script for me.
Unfortunately my English is too lousy to translate it. But there should be some
guys on the forum who's English is better than mine.

It seems it's not an Ubuntu problem but a Windowsproblem. Windows simply
refuses to release the network.
Here's the Dutch solution.
I ll send a translation as soon as I have it.

U kunt dit handmatig oplossen door het IP-adres onder Windows vrij te
geven, alvorens u de PC herstart.

  * Handmatige methode

Open hiervoor in Windows XP een DOS-venstertje:

Start - Programma's - Bureau-accessoires - Opdrachtprompt

tik in:

ipconfig /release

En druk op Enter.

Om deze handmatige oplossing te automatiseren heeft u twee opties:

  * Via een snelkoppeling (halfautomatische oplossing). Open
Kladblok (notepad): Start - Programma's - Bureau-accessoires -
Kladblok.

Tik in kladblok het volgende in:

ipconfig /release

Sla dit op als vrijgave.bat

Maak een snelkoppeling op uw bureaublad, die naar vrijgave.bat verwijst.

Subject: [Bug 163290] Re: Problems DHCP server

It shows no DHCP packets that it has received.

This is quite difficult to troubleshoot and I have been told similar
stories before. Previously it sometimes worked when the network cable
has been exchanged or just turned around (the plug on the network card
into the network device and vice-versa.

Maybe this helps in this case too.

[Bug 175986] if compiz is enabled, using mouse wheel over desktop switches desktops

2007-12-12 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

After enabling Desktop Effects on Gutsy, using the mouse wheel over the desktop
switches between desktops. I think this feature should not be enabled by
default:
- by enabling this feature, switching on the Visual Effects unexpectedly (for
me as user) changes functionality - while I think this is indeed a feature that
could be useful, in my opinion it should have a setting on its own, instead of
sneaking in with the Desktop effects :-)
- personally, I have problems with this feature, as my notebook mouse is quite
sensitive for touching the mousewheel. When the mouse is over the desktop, it
occasionally happens that I touch the wheel strong enough to accidentally
switch screens, which is quite annoying.

As a side problem, I have not found a way to disable this feature
without installing ccsm - so I suppose disabling this feature will for
most users involve googling, instead of intuitively finding a checkbox
somewhere that disables this feature.

Summary:
I would appreciate if this behavior is disabled by default.

[Bug 175905] Re: move lzma from universe to main

2007-12-12 Thread Chris Cheney
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: lzma

Please move lzma from universe to main so that dpkg can use it for
packages. dpkg needs to depend on the package so that other packages can
be built using lzma compression, however dpkg will not be uploaded to
main with the depends before lzma is moved to prevent it from being
  uninstallable.

[Bug 164801] Re: Change in dependency of libxine1 and broken new package

2007-12-12 Thread Reinhard Tartler
xine-lib (1.1.8-3ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low

Merged from the current state of the debian packaging branch. Will appear
  in unstable shortly.

  [Darren Salt]
  * libxine1-dbg was missing some debug symbols. Fixed by building it after
xine-lib's other arch:any packages.
  * Introduce a new package, libxine1-bin, which contains the binaries
formerly in libxine1. Dependencies are moved and updated accordingly.
thanks to Bill Allombert. (Closes: #454267)
  * Except for libxine1-doc, libxine1-bin and libxine-dev, symlink to
libxine1-bin's documentation. (AUTHORS is now in libxine1-bin.)
  * Fix compilation of DXR3 support with external ffmpeg.
This is currently only needed for compilation against libavcodeccvs-dev
(from debian-multimedia). Untested with actual DXR3 hardware since I
have none.

  [ Reinhard Tartler ]
  * Bug fix: FTBFS with GCC 4.3: missing #includes, thanks to Martin
Michlmayr and Daniel Schepler (Closes: #455438, #455322).
  * Bug fix: libxine1-plugins: should not depend on libxine1-gnome,
thanks to Hermogenes Hebert Pereira Oliveira. (Closes: #454162, LP: #164801)
Instead, a new package is introduced: libxine1-all-plugins, which
additionally depends on the gnome plugin.
  * remove the jack plugin. According to upstream it is unfinished and of
poor quality. A rewrite is available in the 1.2 branch. LP: #152487

xine-lib (1.1.8-3) unstable; urgency=low

  [Darren Salt]
  * Patches from the 1.1.9 dev tree:
- Silence lacing: N messages from the matroska demuxer.
- Extra identifier for MPEG video (in AVIs etc.).
  * Tighten the dependencies of libxine1 and libxine1-plugins on libxine1-*
packages.
  * Move deps on libxine1-{x,console} from libxine1-plugins to libxine1 to
avoid further problems such as bug 448077.

  [ Reinhard Tartler ]
  * remove gs from build-deps
  * don't build the pulseaudio plugin. (Closes: #452211, #427991)
