[Bug 165326] Re: [Gutsy][kubuntu][ati] horizontally fuzzy screen with a ATI Technologies Inc RS200/RS200M AGP Bridge [IGP 340M] (rev 02)

2007-12-31 Thread snacker
(I apologize in advance for this comment)

How do I install xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.197-1ubuntu1~tormod for
ubuntu Gutsy?

I tried with sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-
ati_6.7.197-1ubuntu1~tormod but it couldn't find it.

I currently have 1:6.7.195 installed, but would like to get this
installed as I am having the same problem on an hp ze5500en with Radeon
IGT 345M

Even booting from the latest Gutsy ISO has the same result.

(see attached)

(again... sorry for posting this question here)

[Bug 179507] Evolution Receiving Options Server Type Broken

2007-12-31 Thread kolslorr
Public bug reported:

1) Uninstall Evolution from Synaptics (due to broken configuration)
2) Install Evolution, and all related plugins from Synaptics
3) delete .evolution folder from profile folder
3) Launch Evolution, and on the Welcome wizard, 3rd step - Receiving Email
step, Server Type only has Local Delivery and standard Unix email listed. Usual
POP and IMAP support is missing

I have tried reinstallation numerous times, and tried to sudo dpkg-
reconfigure evolution, nothing can bring back the configuration.

[Bug 179336] Re: Hardy alpha 2 CD won't install

2007-12-31 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Very interesting. I've see similar problems and perhaps that I can help
finding where is the problem

Floppy disk : Do you have a floppy disk reader in your computer? If no,
can you access your BIOS and look if there's any floppy disk activated
somewhere in the BIOS. If the BIOS tells ubuntu that there's a floppy
disk reader when it's not the case, it already happened that ubuntu
won't boot, waiting for the Floppy disk to react.

Master Drives : Make sure you didn't put two harddrive configured as
Master on the same IDE cable. If you have two drives on the same IDE
cable, the hard drive at the end of the cable must be the master and the
other must be the slave.

SATA Controller : Some Intel SATA controllers ( and maybe some others )
act like if they are IDE controllers in order to make Windows XP work
without crashing ( it's pretty hard to make Windows really works on SATA
controllers... ) but this gives a problem to Linux which works very
great both with IDE and SATA controllers because this strange behavior
seems to be adapted for Windows only. My own computer is a Dell vostro
and ubuntu did have the same behavior, detecting my drives as SATA and
not IDE and crashing half of the time at boot. Normally, you can change
the controller mode in BIOS and set it to SATA or RAID rather than
IDE and it should fix your issue.

If one of the 3 solutions did work for you, can you tell it here as we
can gather more information about your hardware and contribute to
already opened bug report?

Thanks for your contribution to ubuntu!

[Bug 179336] Re: Hardy alpha 2 CD won't install

2007-12-31 Thread Saïvann Carignan
IMPORTANT NOTE : I forgot to say that changing settings in the BIOS
can't make your computer explode, but it still needs some skills.
Working with precaution is clearly a good thing. You should also know
that if Windows is already installed on your computer and that you
change the BIOS settings to SATA or RAID, Windows will probably crash on
a blue screen until you set back the BIOS settings to IDE.

I'm happy to finally have found a solution to this problem (I hope).
It's probably not the right place to ask, but I've been searching on how

Could anyone give some pointers or perhaps a how to on on how to do
this? (I've been fiddling around with gentoo for a year, just don't know
how to do this kind of stuff on ubuntu).

It may still be touch-and-go; someone else said reversing this patch did
not fix the problem on their machine--so you'll have to try it and
see. It definitely works for me on my nw8240.

I don't know anything about dealing with the patch on ubuntu in
particular, but assuming that you can build the kernel, all you need to
do is go and manually change the relevant line of code and then rebuild
your kernel (or just the relevant module).

Good luck!

[Bug 122039] Re: [Gutsy] unnecessary packages in ubuntu-desktop dependencies?

2007-12-31 Thread Markus Majer
+1 to the answer of Prosthetic Head - I couldnt answer better.

@FrankyT: I personally did know that if the ubuntu-desktop is removed,
all the other packages attached to it won't be removed also. First,
because I am working with Debian and Ubuntu together almost 10 years
know, I believe - and I think also, that a clever newbie will also don't
think that, because it just would make no sense! That is not the point.
(But it could be solved very easily, I could solve it, with my average
packaging knowledge..)

It is just the point, the user above pointed out!

It was not only for fun, that I added the following link like above:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/sounder/2006-June/007465.html

Read it, and also the link included in there, so you find out, what the
real problem is, and what problems a user might get, without knowing
that it has its origin in removing a package that removes ubuntu-desktop
which ends in a not properly upgraded system.

[Bug 179510] Cannot play DVD through xine-backed players in Hardy

2007-12-31 Thread Robertjm
Public bug reported:

Cannot seem to run any DVD when using a xine-backed player in Hardy
Heron. Originally installed Alpha1, however, have installed all updates
as they have been released.

Was able to run under Gutsy Gibbon final version just fine.

Steps to reproduce:
1 - Insert DVD in drive
2 - Choose Applications/Accessories/Terminal
3 - Run xine
4 - Hit g and xine control panel launches
5 - Click on DVD option

Receive errors:

-xine engine error-
There is no input plugin available to handle 'dvd:/.
Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist.

When clicking on More button I get additional error messages:

The source can't be read.
Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't
contain data (e.g: no disk in drive). (/dev/cdrom0)

Additonally, a window pops up with three tabs (messages, plugin and
trace)

Trace has nothing exciting, just two line referring to 2D_Tex and nothing that
looks like an error.
Plugin refers to a whole bunch of plugins being found, but no references to
plugs not found

The messages screen has seven entries. The third one says:
xine: cannot find input plugin for MRL [DVD:/]
followed by:
xine: input plugin cannot open MRL [DVD:/]

What's interesting is that if I use Nautilus to explore the DVD, and go
to the video folder I can right click on any of the video files and view
them through xine just fine.

xine related packages already installed:
libdvdcss2 v1.2.9-2medibuntu4

xine-plugin v1.01~cvs20070523-1ubuntu1

I have a lone CD/DVD writer in the system. The fstab line say:
/dev/hdb/media/cdrom0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec 0 0

Here is the text from the Terminal window:

If I try and use mplayer instead of xine I get an error msg:
No Stream found to handle url dvd://1
If using gxine, I get errors about not being able to handle DVDs. If I go into
configuration it says no device for DVD playback. After configuring that to the
proper device I can play DVD in gxine. However, xine-gui still doesn't work.

[Bug 144589] Re: [gutsy] kicker does not start at login

2007-12-31 Thread Edward Shornock
I can reproduce it fairly easily.

Steps:

1) load kcmshell kcm_tweak
2) Pick any tweaks but don't look at the Panel tab
2) hit apply then OK

Result:
The next time you log in `kicker` won't run. The Panel tab defaults to Start
Panel with KDE unchecked which creates the file
~/.kde/share/autostart/panel.desktop with the following contents:

:~/.kde/share/autostart$ cat panel.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Hidden=false

..which causes kicker to not run at login.

Expected result:
The panel tab should default with Start Panel with KDE turned on.

The bug is actually with the package kde-tweak

$ dlocate kcm_tweak

[Bug 57379] Re: end users should not have to access BIOS whatsoever to install Ubuntu

2007-12-31 Thread Pseudo-Anonymous Coward
Has UNetbootin http://lubi.sourceforge.net/unetbootin.html been
considered for accomplishing this (basically similar to instlux, only
it's better maintained and supports more distros, including the latest
Ubuntu, which instlux does not, as well as Vista support and
installation via .deb or .rpm packages)?

For something like this (as well as the no-CD-installation issue)
something like Wubi seems like overkill in terms of complexity; not to
mention that users don't necessarily want to install to a file in their
NTFS partition (especially now that Vista can resize its own partitions,
basically eliminating the partitioning issue which was the very
reasoning for using loopmounted filesystems); and maintaining loop-
mounting patches for each release of Ubuntu seems much more difficult
than simply re-using the unmodified netboot initrds in UNetbootin builds
(not to mention yet-to-be-discovered support issues if the loopmounted-
filesystem approach becomes a more common installation medium).

Of course, UNetbootin isn't perfect either; perhaps adding a nice GUI to
the netboot installer interface, by adding a gtk-fb interface to d-i,
like in Debian Etch, or including an Ubiquity interface in the netboot
and ftp-install builds will make it more appealing to new users
unfamiliar with the CLI .

Also, perhaps switching to a pre-download-packages and pre-partition-
disks via Vista's partition manager approach, thus allowing for a faster
and more reliable hd-media style install (albeit this approach would
work only on Vista and newer since only they can resize their own
partitions while running, though the netboot version can be used as a
fallback on older Windows versions), would be a more sound solution,
since it allows for a proper, not loopmounted, installation, while still
not introducing the risks of manual repartitioning (since resizing can
be automated via Vista's built-in drive-management utilities), and still
not requiring a CD (like CD-chainloading via SBM or GRLDR) or on-the-go
downloading of packages like in UNetbootin, instlux, and debian-
w32loader

people from other countries get a @gmail.com adress..

That the bug is about this issue, I recognized looking at the status bar while
trying a connection.
I attached a screenshot where you can see both my Google Calendar Account and
Evolution.

It ends up in [EMAIL PROTECTED]@gmail.com or, if I would leave the domain, in
[EMAIL PROTECTED] :(
To work, it should only be [EMAIL PROTECTED]..

Sad, that the plugin doesnt work for me - I personally know have to use
the Google Data Provider Plugin of Thunderbird + Lightning, again -
until I recognize I can switch over to Evolution!

Thats sad, because we use the Google Calendar here extensively, and if
Evolution could to this, I could finally get my coworkers to switch over
to the default Ubuntu distribution completely.

[Bug 32038] Re: digital camera import does not find any files

2007-12-31 Thread ricardisimo
I'm on Feisty and having a similar problem importing images from my
Kodak EasyShare 310. I was getting an error which read PTP Protocol
error, data expected whenever I tried to import. So, I imported via XP
instead. This s no longer an option as I am Ubuntu-only.

The odd thing is that any app I now use to try to import images can view
and import only those images which XP had previously imported. It could
be that the batch of photos in question are saved internally and not on
the flash card, or they have some requisite tag present or absent which
the more recent photos do not. I have no clue which is the case.

The immediately preceding post does not seem to apply to me. Here are the first
few lines of my /etc/udev/rules.d/libgphoto2.rules:
# udev rules file for libgphoto2 devices (udev = 0.98)
#
SUBSYSTEM!=usb*, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_end
ACTION!=add, GOTO=libgphoto2_rules_end

This report says that a fix has been released, but I'm not seeing how to
get it. Would appreciate any help.

P.S. - Ubuntuforums suggests in various places to downgrade libgphoto2
to version 2.2 from 2.3, but this doesn't appear to be possible in
Feisty.

now because I can't change my resolution to 1152x864 from xorg.conf nor

[Bug 179515] X crashes while upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy

2007-12-31 Thread David MENTRÉ
Public bug reported:

Hello,

While upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy, the X server crashed near the end
of the upgrade (36 packages remaining to install on about 1000
packages). After trying to reconnect, the upgrade system told me to
reboot the machine, which I did. The reboot went fine and I could log in
the system. But after trying to update the system with the update
manager (System - Administration - Gestionnaire de mise à jour in
French) the update manager tells me that the repository is corrupted.
Doing a sudo dpkg --configure -a and then a reboot seems to fix the
issue.

I'm using a regular Ubuntu install, on a desktop system.

Sincerely yours,
david

Confirmed on HP Pavilion dv6500 with Western Digital WD800BEVS.As stated
above , the problem is solved by disabling APM , but the Hard disk
tends to heat up.It reached a temperature of ~50 Celsius after about 15
minutes of activity.I read on the WD website that ,the heads are not
parked on the disk platter , but that should mean the HDD should be
capable of a lot of load/unload cycles. Can someone clarify this ?

[Bug 179521] hugin PTmender does not save panorama TIFF_m files

2007-12-31 Thread Nick Alderweireldt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hugin

I am running ubuntu gutsy 32 bit. Hugin (0.7 beta4-1) used with PTmender
as stitching engine starts : converting image 1/2 100 %, converting
image 2/2 100% and then it stops. There are no files saved.

If i select adjusting color and brightness i get following message :
Warning: PTmender (from panotools 2.9 or later) only supports TIFF_m output.
For color and brightness correction, the resulting tiff files must be processed
with PTblender.

after selecting to continue the images are converted 100%; histograms
read 100%, color and brightness adjusted 50% and again histograms read
100%. The info window disappears and again no files are saved.

In both cases i used multiple TIFF as output file.

I started hugin from terminal. There are no error messages. I do not know where
I could find others error logs that could help me find the problem.
I have dropped the same problem with a couple of screenshots on the mailing
list of panotools :
http://www.nabble.com/PTmender-does-not-save-the-result-to14545703.html
But this seems more a microsoft oriented site.

Is there anything I can do to supply further useful information ?

[Bug 179526] restricted-manager overwrites existing x.org.conf

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: restricted-manager

I had a highly customized /etc/X11/xorg.conf with an InputDevice section
tailored to make my Alps touchpad work properly. After running
restricted-manager to enable ATI 3d drivers, I found my x.org.conf to
be completely overwritten by basically the default Ubuntu xorg.conf

[Bug 179524] NTFS volume mounted with wrong options

2007-12-31 Thread Marcus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-kio-plugins

When I mount my external usb harddrive, which has one ntfs partion, in
kde I can't see filenames with non-standard characters (in my case
swedish åäö). No matter if the utf8 options is turned on or off. I have
tried both by clicking on the harddrive on the desktop and use
kio_media_mounthelper directly.

If I use gnome-mount, sudo mount or pmount everythings works ok.

I started hald with --daemon=no --verbose=yes options and tried to track the
difference between gnome-mount and kio_media_mounthelper. I found that
gnome-mount sends the following options:
given_options[0] = 'locale=sv_SE.UTF-8'
given_options[1] = 'exec'

but kio_media_mounthelper sends
given_options[0] = 'utf8'

That difference may have something to do with this bug.

[Bug 159937] Re: time / size mapping is incorrect for Audio CD

2007-12-31 Thread k3nt-1
Any chance to get it backported in gutsy ?
I did compile the 0.7 version manually and everything is working smoothly, so I
guess packaging it would be possible.

Thanks.

[Bug 179504] Re: [Hardy 8.04 alpha-2 users groups] Can't login as root because administrative user can't change root's initial random password.

2007-12-31 Thread dAniel hAhler
The root password is not random, but the root login is disabled. So even
if you change it using sudo passwd, you cannot login with it.

Please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more
information.

Thank you.

[Bug 179359] Re: Open dialog lacks mounted directories

2007-12-31 Thread Anders Wallenquist
Thank you, I hope this small enhancement will be implemented. Working
with gnome-vfs is an important feature in for example gedit and will
make gobby a far more potent equipment in the programmers toolbox. I
believe its more easy to implement this than a CVS, BZR or SVN interface
and has a wider target audience.

[Bug 179389] Kubuntu's log-in is not user friendly

2007-12-31 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This is really not a bug, but is is more a bug than a wish. I'm a
software developer myself, focused on GUIs and usability. I recently
created a Kubuntu configuration for me and few others whose computer
skills vary from 0 to ok, I almost can handle Kate. I found the login
screen in Kubuntu Gutsy rather hard to figure out. The user images were
a nice touch in Gutsy, thanks for that. But here is few points I like
bring to developers' attention:

1) I chose passwordless login for the most novice computer users. It was still
very hard to login! The password field was not disabled as it should which was
confusing. The actual login was a pain in ass then, no hitting enter in obvious
place since no password was required. Double-clicking on the user icon, great,
but not too obvious. Suggestions: passwordless login - disable password field;
ok/enter nice and educational image but lacks a caption, so not so obvious
either!!
2) There was this icon which wasn't so obvious to click. My mother could never
figure out how to shutdown the computer from the login screen. These options
should be presented more clearly, like few more icons that group the options
(so not every options needs an icon which complicates).
3) Icons without captions are always a risk

Ok, little polishing. But isn't this what the #1 bug is all about?
