[Bug 179336] Re: Hardy alpha 2 CD won't install
Very interesting. I've see similar problems and perhaps that I can help finding where is the problem Floppy disk : Do you have a floppy disk reader in your computer? If no, can you access your BIOS and look if there's any floppy disk activated somewhere in the BIOS. If the BIOS tells ubuntu that there's a floppy disk reader when it's not the case, it already happened that ubuntu won't boot, waiting for the Floppy disk to react. Master Drives : Make sure you didn't put two harddrive configured as Master on the same IDE cable. If you have two drives on the same IDE cable, the hard drive at the end of the cable must be the master and the other must be the slave. SATA Controller : Some Intel SATA controllers ( and maybe some others ) act like if they are IDE controllers in order to make Windows XP work without crashing ( it's pretty hard to make Windows really works on SATA controllers... ) but this gives a problem to Linux which works very great both with IDE and SATA controllers because this strange behavior seems to be adapted for Windows only. My own computer is a Dell vostro and ubuntu did have the same behavior, detecting my drives as SATA and not IDE and crashing half of the time at boot. Normally, you can change the controller mode in BIOS and set it to SATA or RAID rather than IDE and it should fix your issue. If one of the 3 solutions did work for you, can you tell it here as we can gather more information about your hardware and contribute to already opened bug report? [Bug 179336] Re: Hardy alpha 2 CD won't install
IMPORTANT NOTE : I forgot to say that changing settings in the BIOS can't make your computer explode, but it still needs some skills. Working with precaution is clearly a good thing. You should also know that if Windows is already installed on your computer and that you change the BIOS settings to SATA or RAID, Windows will probably crash on a blue screen until you set back the BIOS settings to IDE. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Saïvann Carignan (saivann) Status: New = Incomplete -- Hardy alpha 2 CD won't install https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/179336 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 122039] Re: [Gutsy] unnecessary packages in ubuntu-desktop dependencies?
+1 to the answer of Prosthetic Head - I couldnt answer better. @FrankyT: I personally did know that if the ubuntu-desktop is removed, all the other packages attached to it won't be removed also. First, because I am working with Debian and Ubuntu together almost 10 years know, I believe - and I think also, that a clever newbie will also don't think that, because it just would make no sense! That is not the point. (But it could be solved very easily, I could solve it, with my average packaging knowledge..) It is just the point, the user above pointed out! It was not only for fun, that I added the following link like above: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/sounder/2006-June/007465.html Read it, and also the link included in there, so you find out, what the real problem is, and what problems a user might get, without knowing that it has its origin in removing a package that removes ubuntu-desktop which ends in a not properly upgraded system. -- [Gutsy] unnecessary packages in ubuntu-desktop dependencies? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/122039 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 57379] Re: end users should not have to access BIOS whatsoever to install Ubuntu
Has UNetbootin http://lubi.sourceforge.net/unetbootin.html been considered for accomplishing this (basically similar to instlux, only it's better maintained and supports more distros, including the latest Ubuntu, which instlux does not, as well as Vista support and installation via .deb or .rpm packages)? For something like this (as well as the no-CD-installation issue) something like Wubi seems like overkill in terms of complexity; not to mention that users don't necessarily want to install to a file in their NTFS partition (especially now that Vista can resize its own partitions, basically eliminating the partitioning issue which was the very reasoning for using loopmounted filesystems); and maintaining loop- mounting patches for each release of Ubuntu seems much more difficult than simply re-using the unmodified netboot initrds in UNetbootin builds (not to mention yet-to-be-discovered support issues if the loopmounted- filesystem approach becomes a more common installation medium). Of course, UNetbootin isn't perfect either; perhaps adding a nice GUI to the netboot installer interface, by adding a gtk-fb interface to d-i, like in Debian Etch, or including an Ubiquity interface in the netboot and ftp-install builds will make it more appealing to new users unfamiliar with the CLI . Also, perhaps switching to a pre-download-packages and pre-partition- disks via Vista's partition manager approach, thus allowing for a faster and more reliable hd-media style install (albeit this approach would work only on Vista and newer since only they can resize their own partitions while running, though the netboot version can be used as a fallback on older Windows versions), would be a more sound solution, since it allows for a proper, not loopmounted, installation, while still not introducing the risks of manual repartitioning (since resizing can be automated via Vista's built-in drive-management utilities), and still not requiring a CD (like CD-chainloading via SBM or GRLDR) or on-the-go downloading of packages like in UNetbootin, instlux, and debian- w32loader -- end users should not have to access BIOS whatsoever to install Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/57379 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 179515] X crashes while upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy
Public bug reported: Hello, While upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy, the X server crashed near the end of the upgrade (36 packages remaining to install on about 1000 packages). After trying to reconnect, the upgrade system told me to reboot the machine, which I did. The reboot went fine and I could log in the system. But after trying to update the system with the update manager (System - Administration - Gestionnaire de mise à jour in French) the update manager tells me that the repository is corrupted. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hugin I am running ubuntu gutsy 32 bit. Hugin (0.7 beta4-1) used with PTmender as stitching engine starts : converting image 1/2 100 %, converting image 2/2 100% and then it stops. There are no files saved. If i select adjusting color and brightness i get following message : Warning: PTmender (from panotools 2.9 or later) only supports TIFF_m output. For color and brightness correction, the resulting tiff files must be processed with PTblender. after selecting to continue the images are converted 100%; histograms read 100%, color and brightness adjusted 50% and again histograms read 100%. The info window disappears and again no files are saved. In both cases i used multiple TIFF as output file. I started hugin from terminal. There are no error messages. I do not know where I could find others error logs that could help me find the problem. I have dropped the same problem with a couple of screenshots on the mailing list of panotools : http://www.nabble.com/PTmender-does-not-save-the-result-to14545703.html But this seems more a microsoft oriented site. [Bug 179389] Kubuntu's log-in is not user friendly
You have been subscribed to a public bug: This is really not a bug, but is is more a bug than a wish. I'm a software developer myself, focused on GUIs and usability. I recently created a Kubuntu configuration for me and few others whose computer skills vary from 0 to ok, I almost can handle Kate. I found the login screen in Kubuntu Gutsy rather hard to figure out. The user images were a nice touch in Gutsy, thanks for that. But here is few points I like bring to developers' attention: 1) I chose passwordless login for the most novice computer users. It was still very hard to login! The password field was not disabled as it should which was confusing. The actual login was a pain in ass then, no hitting enter in obvious place since no password was required. Double-clicking on the user icon, great, but not too obvious. Suggestions: passwordless login - disable password field; ok/enter nice and educational image but lacks a caption, so not so obvious either!! 2) There was this icon which wasn't so obvious to click. My mother could never figure out how to shutdown the computer from the login screen. These options should be presented more clearly, like few more icons that group the options (so not every options needs an icon which complicates). 3) Icons without captions are always a risk Ok, little polishing. But isn't this what the #1 bug is all about? ** Affects: kdebase (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium Status: Confirmed -- Kubuntu's log-in is not user friendly https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/179389 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Team, which is a bug contact for kdebase in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
