[Bug 207437] [NEW] Hildon only: Cheese crashes when using menu items About, Quit

2008-03-26 Thread Gary Lasker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cheese

When running Cheese on the hildon desktop, choosing either of the two
menu items Quit or About will cause the program to crash. Quit crashes
with a SIGABRT, and About with a SIGSEGV (see attached debug output).
Note that in the case of Quit, the error does not occur when quitting
Cheese by tapping the hildon desktop "X"; in this case the program exits
normally.

I'm using Cheese version 2.22.0-0ubuntu2, on a device running UME.

NOTE: This bug applies *only* to Cheese running in hildon mode. The
corresponding menu items work without error when running Cheese on the
desktop.

I'll attach some debug output. I haven't had a chance yet to
investigate this further.

[Bug 207445] [NEW] Adept dist-update error window is too small

2008-03-26 Thread nitrogen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adept

If the filename in an error message is longer than the width of the
error window, the filename is truncated and other elements of the window
are placed beyond the right edge of the window (including the Close
button). There is no scroll bar or other indication that the window
should be made wider.

This was encountered while upgrading from Kubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 beta.

Note that I am reporting the incorrect layout of the error dialog. The
actual error itself has already been reported elsewhere.

[Bug 207446] [NEW] wpa_supplicant fails after upgrade to Hardy

2008-03-26 Thread Michael Lauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wpasupplicant

After upgrading from gutsy to hardy, wpa_supplicant can no longer
authenticate. It seems to try repeatedly until I kill it.

The results of sudo wpa_supplicant -Dwext -iwlan0
-c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -dd are in the attachment.

I can get a wireless connection if I disable WPA; wpa_supplicant still
works fine if I boot with kernel 2.6.22.

wpasupplicant version is 0.6.0+0.5.8-0ubuntu2.

Wireless is netgear wg511v2/ndiswrapper.

/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf is

[Bug 207441] [NEW] Hardy Beta - smbfs/cifs issues

2008-03-26 Thread Hamish
Public bug reported:

"smbfs" is not installed by default, which it probably should be if this
is to be used in the enterprise. Or is there an alternative, as I have
been using "smbfs" for a few releases now and am not sure if how to
mount SMB shares has changed for Hardy.

I installed smbfs, and then put some entries into /etc/fstab, so they automount
on startup. On startup, for each entry in the /etc/fstab file, I get the
following in dmesg:
[ 70.495504] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to IPv4 socket. Aborting operation
[ 70.495569] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -101
But the shares are mounted, and a nautilus session opens up (which is also
annoying...)

Also logging off with CIFS shares mounted in /etc/fstab, it sits with an
error message, and does not shutdown or restart. This also happened with
Gutsy, and was fixed using a script I found on the Ubuntu Forums.

Is there an alternative way to mount the shares so that this doesn't
happen, or should the timing of the mounting and dismounting be changed
so that it works? I think it is related to the starting of network-
manager and CIFS shares trying to connect on startup *before* the
network is up, and dismounting the shares *after* network-manager is
stopped.

Hamish

[Bug 207444] [NEW] Unable to pass environment variables

2008-03-26 Thread Raphaël Doursenaud
Public bug reported:

I used to issue
$DIST=gutsy ARCH=i386 pdebuild
on my amd64 machine to build i386 versions of some packages using the
configuration found in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PbuilderHowto#head-1be378ab60d3bab23eefabce49cf7df927d46f81

Starting from hardy, this doesn't work as expected and picks the
default pbuilder.

I think this is because the environment variables are not passed as
these should.

pbuilder create/update works right, only the pdebuild command is
affected.

[Bug 207443] [NEW] playing xmms2 crashes after removing entry in mlib relating to what's in the playlist, the playlist should be refreshed

2008-03-26 Thread Kaivalagi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xmms2

lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release:8.04

xmms2: Installed: 0.2DrJekyll-4ubuntu4
esperanza: Installed: 0.4.0-1ubuntu1

When using xmms2, if you remove an entry from the media library which
exists in the playlist, and then try to play it, bang!

Steps I went through to have the crash:
1) Freshly install xmms2
2) run: "xmms2-launcher"
3) run: "esperanza &"
4) mind.in.a.box sample present, track id = 1, so want to remove it
4) run: "xmms2 mlib remove 1"
4) Try to play the song as still listed in esperanza (which I know is not there)

Ideally xmms2 should ensure anything removed from the media library, if
attempted to be played by a UI, doesn't crash xmms2. If anything would
crash I would expect esperanza to and not xmms2.

[Bug 70222] Re: there was some problems at the end of installation process, installer wasn't be able to install grub

2008-03-26 Thread Nattgew
I figured that, I'd be saying the same.
I agree that it's way too long. I'm looking back through these old reports to
see if I can close them or get them closer to being fixed, and it's crazy how
many I'm finding that have no replies of any sort. It's only about 6% that
seem to be left behind, but then you have tens of thousands of bugs, that ends
up being a lot.
I would like to think that the Bug Control team is doing a better job these
days, with more help and experience. Of course, it's hard to tell.
I'm thinking that it's a bit out of control, though.

[Bug 190934] Re: [hardy] keyboard modifiers randomly forgotten

2008-03-26 Thread Rocko
normally, xev only logs key press events when you actually press a key.
but when the modifiers stop working it sees a continuous stream of key
press/key release events.

following is a sample key press/key release/key press sequence from xev
when the modifier keys stop working.

KeyPress event, serial 32, synthetic NO, window 0x3a1,
root 0x5a, subw 0x0, time 28763460, (171,-12), root:(1529,853),
state 0x0, keycode 101 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 32, synthetic NO, window 0x3a1,
root 0x5a, subw 0x0, time 28763494, (171,-12), root:(1529,853),
state 0x100, keycode 101 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyPress event, serial 32, synthetic NO, window 0x3a1,
root 0x5a, subw 0x0, time 28763494, (171,-12), root:(1529,853),
state 0x100, keycode 101 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

you can see that the second keypress event shown has the same timestamp
as the previous keyrelease event. this is the same for all the ones i
looked at.

so perhaps this phantom key press/release could be preventing key
modifiers from working properly, eg you press shift, but then this
phantom keypress occurs before you get a chance to press the i key, so
the shift is cancelled and the i comes out lowercase.

mouse to control the computer, the sound skips.
- I'm suspecting that the computer can't adjust the CPU to a higher clockrate
fast enough to not skip, but I don't know.
+ Problem is that if I am playing music (usually in amarok), when I move the
mouse to control the computer(and turn on the screen), the sound skips.
+ It also sometimes occurs when switching between Virtual console F7 and F9.

[Bug 189421] Re: laptop mode cannot start when on ac power

2008-03-26 Thread Adrien Massy
Same problem here but doesn't seem to be a real bug, more a problem of
priority in the running of the boot scripts (and more precisely with
acpi-support)

I got it fixed by modifying the line "CONCURRENCY=none" to
"CONCURRENCY=shell" in /etc/init.d/rc, making the scripts boot
concurrently.

I guess you might also be able to fix it by modifying the runlevel of
the script, having laptop-mode boot before/after? acpi-support but I
could never figured out how.

[Bug 207409] Re: [HARDY] xserver-xorg does not auto-configure correctly

2008-03-26 Thread Bryce Harrington
displayconfig-gtk is a user interactive method for configuring
xorg.conf. Like dpkg-reconfigure it also often produces invalid
configurations. We recommend using the autoconfiguration approach, and
if that does not work for some reason, please report it as a bug. This
way we can roll out a true fix for everyone.

[Bug 201887] Re: Slim USB Apple Keyboard not working correctly..

2008-03-26 Thread Tommy Vestermark

This patch solved my problem with wrongly mapped keys. I am no kernel-hacker,
but it also seems odd that locale specific mappings are done in the kernel
anyway. This is my first official kernel-patch, so I have no clue of what to do
to get it merged in the Ubuntu kernel?

Eric,
I managed to compile a kernel with your patch applied and it solved the
"virtual keypad" problem for me. I hope you will be successful in getting it
applied to Ubuntu kernel.

Mario,
I managed to change the pb_fnmode to 2 and it solved the 'fn' key problem for
me. The other behavior might be default for Mac users, but I am not a Mac user.
I just bought this nice keyboard for my PC, so it seems very odd to me that
'F*' keys must be so difficult to use. Well hopefully someone will regain their
senses and realize 'F*' keys are used for so many tasks in Linux...

[Bug 207432] [NEW] asus z53t hotkeys do not work ootb

2008-03-26 Thread Maximilian Federle
Public bug reported:

release: ubuntu hardy heron beta fully updated

system information:
ASUSTeK Computer INC.
F3T
1.0

1. key: hotkey ATKD 0095 0009
supposed to do: launch media player (rhythmbox)
does: nothing atm

2. key: hotkey ATKD 005c 0002
supposed to do: some weird power management button
does: /etc/acpi/lockbtn.sh (what is that?)

3. key: hotkey ATKD 006b 0005 and hotkey ATKD 006a 0001
supposed to do: turn on/off touchpad
does: /etc/acpi/asus-touchpad.sh; this works only with SHMConfig "true", but
hardy's xorg.conf does not even contain a touchpad entry. maybe this script
should work with the new option in the gnome mouse preferences where you can
switch on/off your touchpad.

4. key: hotkey ATKD 0051 0027
supposed to do: launch webbrowser
does: /etc/acpi/webbtn.sh; however this one does not launch my browser. (did
work on gutsy)

5. key: hotkey ATKD 008a 0001
supposed to do: put laptop into standby mode
does: nothing atm

All other keys do work as expected. Keep up your great work!

[Bug 163265] Re: lid event not recognized by acpi event rules

2008-03-26 Thread Daniel Hahler
Well, that's _very_ strange. "[ /]" should match "space or slash" and
I've verified that acpid parses the event correctly and also that
regexec matches "button/lid" given the event from
/etc/acpi/events/lidbtn.

I've patched event.c, so that it tests each loaded event against "button/lid"
and outputs the event in case it matches:
diff -u acpid-1.0.4/event.c acpid-1.0.4/event.c
--- acpid-1.0.4/event.c
+++ acpid-1.0.4/event.c
@@ -283,6 +283,11 @@
fclose(fp);
return NULL;
}
+if (!regexec(r->event, "button/lid LID 0080 000f", 0,
NULL, 0)) {
+printf("EVENT: '%s'\n", val);
+printf("MATCH!\n");
+}
+
} else if (!strcasecmp(key, "action")) {
if (check_escapes(val) < 0) {
acpid_log("ERR: can't load file %s\n", file);
Then compiled it just using "make" and started it in debug mode ("./acpid -d")
and part of the output confirmed the match:
[Wed Mar 26 23:48:50 2008] DBG: parsing conf file /etc/acpi/events/lidbtn
EVENT: 'button[ /]lid'
MATCH!

So, while I believe you that you experience this problem, of course, there
appears to be some other problem.
Does it work for you if you use "event=button[/ ]lid" (changing the order of
space and slash)?
Another possibility would be to try "event=button[/[:space:]]lid".

btw: "sudo invoke-rc.d acpid restart" should be enough to reload acpid.

[Bug 205079] Re: kubuntu Hardy Heron could not install libc6

2008-03-26 Thread Matthias Rampke
Addition to previous post: I checked term.log _before_ I clicked close,
it was zero length then as well.

Richard's workaround worked fine.
Even after closing the update-manager, warnings about packages not installed
due to failed dependencies kept coming up until I killed the corresponding
python processes. Then everything worked fine, except for the -386 kernel
waiting for the root filesystem indefinitely. -generic worked, and this is
probably unrelated.
So, here's a short wrap-up of the workaround process, starting from when you
get the offending message (preceding # means no shell input):

#close the error window; click the close button on the update-manager window
and confirm. more error windows might pop up
ps ax#show all processes
#there will be one or more "python /tmp/*"-like processes. kill all of them.
cd /var/cache/apt/archives
sudo dpkg -i libgcc1_* libc6_*
sudo dpkg -i debconf* liblocale-gettext-perl_* perl-base_*
apt-get -f install
kdesu "adept_manager --dist-upgrade-devel"
# wait for it to finish, reboot when requested, wait for fsck and automatic
second reboot, enjoy 8.04!
# if needed choose "generic" kernel

I just opened the time-admin tool via the menu and had to authenticate

authenticate again.

I think the two authentications should be consolidated.
