[Bug 201799] Re: Confusing mysqld startup failure with apparmor (Hardy)

2008-04-26 Thread Lost In Tokyo

Alternative solution:

1. Edit /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld and add the following two lines:

/home/mysql/ r,
/home/mysql/** rwk,

somewhere in the middle of the file. After the /var/lib/mysql lines would
be fine.
2. /etc/init.d/apparmor restart
3. /etc/init.d/mysql restart

You retain the benefis of apparmor. Maybe the comments in
/etc/mysql/my.cnf regarding apparmor can be expanded to cover exactly
what you should do if you reset mysql_data.

This bug occurred for me on 7.04. Yesterday I upgraded to 8.04 through

fixes/works around it. FYI, my reports are just for logging off, haven't

[Bug 222322] Re: IDE addressing screwed in Hardy

2008-04-26 Thread Don Malcolm
This problem appears to be a kernel issue. When I select kernel
2.6.22-14-generic from the grub menu during boot up, the IDE addressing
behaves normally, and I can access all my hard drives. When I select
kernel 2.6.24-16-generic the IDE addressing is screwed, and I can only
access some of my hard drives.

Note also that at no time was there a sdc or sdd. When running the
2.6.24-16-generic kernel, there is at most just sda and sdb. I have
three hard drives, and with the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel there is hda
hdb and hdc.

 Thanks!

Hi,

the VF0330 camera works fine (I added the initial support for it).
The initial patch I submitted to launchpad allows the camera to work
with skype through a workaround. The workaround hasn't made it to the
Ubuntu package though as it is, well, a hack (see previous posts to know
more).
So, to summarise, you can simply apply the patch I initially sent on top
of the new ov51x-jpeg source until skype gets fixed.

Hope this helps,

JB

[Bug 222349] [NEW] display won't come back from suspend after 8.04 upgrade

2008-04-26 Thread Pam Griffith
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to 8.04. I am using a Dell Inspiron B130. Suspend has
always worked, but turning the backlight back on after it has been
turned off when the laptop lid closed has been buggy in other versions
(Dapper, maybe?)

When I close the laptop lid with the battery settings thingy set to
suspend, it seems to suspend ok (light goes into blinky sleep mode), and
opening it back up seems to wake it up from suspend ok (light goes back
to solid mode, hard drive noises) but there is no display. This is not
the same as this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-
support/+bug/180473 which still has a cursor. There is no cursor, no
blinking screen, the screen is completely dark.

[Bug 222176] Re: initramfs error/problem ubuntu 8.04

2008-04-26 Thread bertm
Try to Wubi-install the Alternate CD and then boot HH with the pci=nomsi
option. I have HH running that way (well, it's certainly not quite
elegant, but half-working is better than non-working).

I have not tested x86 yet, but I can confirm this bug applies to AMD64.

[Bug 220143] Re: update manager crashed while updating from Gutsy to Heron

2008-04-26 Thread Steve Langasek
Bryce, it seems unlikely that X would have not been running here, after
all update-manager is an X application. The real problem is that the
xserver-xorg postinst is failing for an unknown reason.

mj, it seems we really do need your continued help to be able to track
this bug; many people have run the RC (and now the release) without
encountering this failure, including many Thinkpad users. Is there a
chance that you can try upgrading again to find out whether the bug is
reproducible?

[Bug 201799] Re: Confusing mysqld startup failure with apparmor (Hardy)

2008-04-26 Thread Lost In Tokyo

Alternative solution:

1. Edit /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld and add the following two lines:

/home/mysql/ r,
/home/mysql/** rwk,

somewhere in the middle of the file. After the /var/lib/mysql lines would
be fine.
2. /etc/init.d/apparmor restart
3. /etc/init.d/mysql restart

You retain the benefis of apparmor. Maybe the comments in
/etc/mysql/my.cnf regarding apparmor can be expanded to cover exactly
what you should do if you reset mysql_data.

[Bug 222115] Re: Kubuntu 8.04 Grub Error 22 or no partitions found when booting

2008-04-26 Thread Don Malcolm
I am also having problems with not being able to access devices. I have
reported it as bug#222322. In addition to what I wrote there, my initial
experience is that I installed Hardy on hdc the master disk on my
secondary controller. Hardy kind of interpreted it as sda. But I got
'File not found' message upon reboot after the install. So I swapped IDE
cables, to put my install location on the master disk on my primary
controller. This got me further. But as I have three disks, I am still
unable to access all my data.

The bug you've followed up to is a bug in the grub package that has been

I am having problems with accessing IDE devices too. I have filed

Just a suggestion. Do you have exactly two IDE devices? If so, make your
hard drive the master on your primary IDE controller, and the CD drive
slave on your primary IDE controller, and leave your secondary
controller empty.

[Bug 222360] [NEW] Monitor not configured correctly in x.org

2008-04-26 Thread Hal Eisen
Public bug reported:

Samsung 193P LCD monitor 1280x1024 60Hz
Nvidia nForce3 Ultra (PNY Verto FX 5500)
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Shuttle XPC case

This bug was present in both Gutsy and now Hardy, but not in Dapper.
Knoppix gets the configuration correct, by the way. I've tried stealing
the xorg.conf file from Knoppix and using it with Gutsy, but no joy.
Also tried tweaking my xorg.conf with xvidtune, but it complains that
You have requested a mode-line that is not possible, or not supported
by your hardware configuration.

See the attached photo, a close-up of the bottom right corner of my
monitor. There is a large black strip running vertically down the
entire right side, which is about 3/4 of an inch wide.

This bug is present regardless of whether I use the free nvidia driver,
or the one I get using the restricted driver, though the size and
position is slightly different.

[Bug 222367] [NEW] Star Wars screensaver doesn't handle non-ASCII well

2008-04-26 Thread Vincent Lönngren
Public bug reported:

With my current locale, the date is string looks like this: lör apr 26
09:56:22 EEST 2008. The 'ö' here is not displayed well in the Star Wars

something else. The starwars command outputs messages like these:

starwars: font -*-utopia-bold-r-normal-*-*-720-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 does not
exist, using -*-times-bold-r-normal-*-180-*
starwars: unable to load font

I also noticed that if you update Left or Right margins, for example

It is however still not possible to save new values to the two fields.

2008-04-26 Thread tech0007
Evolution (mail client) max out the cpu to 99% only when I reply to
emails, as it downloads the contacts from my office exchange server.
could this be it? how can i disable evolution from syncing the contacts
from the exchange server?

[Bug 222372] [NEW] update manager fails to remove cups

2008-04-26 Thread Eli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Update manager threw a pop up window with the following error:
Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/cupsys_1.3.7-1ubuntu3_amd64.deb'
The upgrade will continue but the
/var/cache/apt/archives/cupsys_1.3.7-1ubuntu3_amd64.deb'
package may not be in a not working state. Please consider submitting a
bugreport about it.

subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2

I'm upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy (64 bit version) on HP Pavillion

[Bug 222371] [NEW] The systems seems not to detect the screen's native resolution. There is a scrambled image at the start and the resolution is set at 1024x768 instead of 1280x800

2008-04-26 Thread antar
Public bug reported:

I am sorry the description is not precise enough. I am still a complete
beginner!

I was using 7.10 and updated to 8.04 just now.
The laptop model is HP Pavilion dv6000 (dv6326us)

THe error started when I wanted to add a second screen (on 7.10). The display
crashed and it remained scrambled. When I changed the display using fn +f4 the
resolution was set to 1024x768 instead of the native 1280x800. The screen
resolution panel does not show my screen resolution.
I tried to find the right monitor in the screens and graphics tool but all
tests failed.
After installing 8.04 the problem remains.
However when I boot from cd the native resolution is detected.

[Bug 221255] Re: Flash player in firefox segfaults

2008-04-26 Thread Girish Kulkarni
I am having this same problem with Firefox 3.0b5 on Ubuntu 8.04. The
flashplugin-nonfree version is 9.0.124.0ubuntu2. I don't even have to
wait for a second or third page with flash; I get a segfault at the
first flashy page I visit.

[Bug 106813] Re: /etc/fstab becomes empty after reboot on Edgy for powerpc

2008-04-26 Thread wolfger
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at [WWW]
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage .
Unfortunately, Edgy is now outside of the 18-month support timeframe, and this
bug will no longer be addressed. We encourage you to try the new 8.04 LTS
release which will be supported for a full 3 years.

[Bug 222376] [NEW] OpenOffice not displaying dictionary installation wizard correctly

2008-04-26 Thread Carroarmato0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

OpenOffice on Hardy Herron doesn't size the dictionary wizard window
correctly.

Plus, the window is unresizeable forcing the user to blindly use the tab
key and guess which button he's on to attempt to install desired
dictionaries anyway.
