[Bug 220844] Re: wbinfo fails to enumerate users and groups
I've discovered what's happening here. On the Debian etch development box that these steps worked, the IP address is set statically, outside the normal DHCP range. On the Ubuntu 8.04 workstation that I performed the above, the IP address was set dynamically. I discovered that I could work around this problem by giving the workstation a manual IP address and registering it with DNS. If I then re-join the domain, I can properly enumerate users and groups and log in. This seems to either be a bug or by design, but something is definitely wrong if I have to set a static IP by hand in Linux but not in Windows. -- wbinfo fails to enumerate users and groups https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/220844 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
Re: [Bug 221737] Re: upsd doesn't start on system startup
moot point guys. NUT can be a network master (same for standalone boxes), requiring driver+upsd+upsmon, or a net slave requiring only upsmon. So if there was a component to be started in all cases, that would be upsmon. but this is void, and it would simply fail if there is no upsd running and no suitable config. the same would go for upsd, if there is no ups.conf+upsd.{conf,users}. And running only driver+upsd in the best case doesn't protect you: here you need upsmon. [Bug 223376] Re: root, not postfix, owns /var/spool/postfix
This is not actually a bug. The correct solution is to have the cache where a fresh Postfix install would put it: data_directory = /var/lib/postfix smtp_tls_session_cache_database = btree:${data_directory}/smtp_scache smtpd_tls_session_cache_database = btree:${data_directory}/smtpd_scache tls_random_exchange_name = ${data_directory}/prng_exch This was the result of an upstream change for Postfix 2.5. I'd suggest changing your configuration to put the cache in /var/lib/postfix and change the permissions back. That's what a fresh install would have given you. Marking Won't Fix because if you'd upgraded with an old main.cf, you'd have had the same situation. [Bug 222322] Re: IDE addressing screwed in Hardy
No Darko, it is not to do with uuid in the fstab. For the record, the fstab does use UUID to identify the disks. Please read more carefully. You will see that I have stated, that fdisk -l does not report all my disks. Furhermore you will see that I have included output from lshw. If you would kindly take the time to examine the output of lshw from Dapper and Hardy installs, you will see that a disk is missing from the Hardy install that is present in the Dapper install. Note that this output was taken from my current hardware configuration. As I have stated above, Dapper is installed in the second partition on the master of the primary controller. Hardy is installed on the first partition on the master of the primary controller. Furthermore please note that when attempting to install Hardy in a disk on the seconday IDE controller, the install fails because it fails in the kernel to identify all my drives. I suspect the reason for the file not found message I stated above, was that it installed on the disk on the secondary controller, but then on reboot, the disk was no longer visible. It does not appear to me to be a configuration issue, but rather a kernel issue. Why? As I stated above, the problem also exists in Fedora Core 8, also by booting Hardy but with the Gutsy kernel, all disks are identified properly. Simply changing the kernel and only the kernel to an earlier kernel, the system is fully operational with all disks correctly identified in fdisk -l. Point taken regarding use of sda in place of hda. I was not aware of this change. It would seem there are bugs in this change over. Configurations that failed for me in Hardy: 1) Two drives, with one as master on the primary controller, and one as master on the secondary controller. Only one drive shows up in fdisk -l 2) Three drives, with two on the primary controller and the other as master on the secondary. Only two drives show up. 3) Three drives, with two on the secondary controller and the other as master on the primary. Only two drives show up. At the moment, I am running Hardy with two drives on the primary controller, with both drives accessible, and the third as master on the secondary controller, and is not visible in fdisk -l. -- IDE addressing screwed in Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/222322 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 194029] Re: 2.6.24-8 Introduces Network Issue
Yet another me too from me, considering this is triaged. I was having a slightly different problem than commonly described here, because my Ubuntu Hardy laptop is the server and my desktop is the client. When my mouse was on my desktop, and I clicked something, there would be a varying delayed reaction up to about 5 seconds. But if, when it's having a delayed reaction, I move the mouse, then it continues. So if I click a button, I have the move the mouse after that for the click to register - or wait a few seconds. So I decided to try making my desktop the server. That's when I started experiencing huge delays and temporary mouse lockups, as described here. Running as root does prevent the problem, even for the server (thanks, PSCArmstrSM!), but a fix would be really nice. -- 2.6.24-8 Introduces Network Issue https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194029 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 215374] Re: Vim crash when trying to expand a path
Yes, I can reproduce that too. This bug has already been fixed in latest vim from CVS (in patch 7.1.147 which was released on Tue, Oct 30, 2007). But Ubuntu Hardy is using an older version: vim-7.1.138 (which was released on Oct 9, 2007). Here is the patch description which fixes it: 7.1.147 (after 7.1.127) freeing memory twice completing user name Can we backport a more recent vim? It would fix several issues. The latest vim from CVS is vim-7.1.293 (apr-9) which I've been using and testing since it was released looks very stable. Updating would fix not only this issue but other opened vim issues which I have investigated such as at least: - bug #215374 (this bug) (fixed in vim-7.1.147) - bug #129106 vim crashes when gnome-terminal tab is detached (fixed in vim-7.1.166) - bug #68960 fix hangs when editing a specific file (fixed in vim 7.1.227) - bug #219546 vim crashes when pressing tab and using rails.vim (no longer happens in latest vim-7.1.293, not sure which patch fixes it, possibly also 7.1.147) -- Vim crash when trying to expand a path https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/215374 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 194029] Re: 2.6.24-8 Introduces Network Issue
This bug has been triaged; the cause of the bug seems to be known. Yes, the root cause of this bug can introduce lags and general desktop unresponsiveness in other applications. It's a kernel scheduler option that's known to the (upstream) developers to cause scheduling problems and which has unfortunately been enabled in the Hardy 8.04 release. The fix seems to be in the pipeline: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-hardy.git;a=commit;h=273f7b551a420580307fa414fe616f0e276a4035 Hopefully this will be released as an update soon. Hi, I have an HP Pavilion dv6747. It has an Intel HDA Chipset and I have had the same problem but followed stereoit's instructions and got it working. What I did was dble click on the volume control which opened the task bar. Only the play back tab was avalible. Went to editpreferences and ticked everything Then went back and looked at the recording tab and changed both Capture and Digital to about 75%. I also edited the Front Mic Boost to about 50% Also went to the options tab and changed it to Front Mic (oringally was Mic). This got the inbuilt mic working. I have no external mic to test with. Also the recordings in audacity all need normalising, it might have something to do with the front mic boost but i really have no idea. I have the same problem, I can't find a workaround for polkit-gnome- authorization. If it helps, you can revoke the blocks using the command- line, which will stop polkit-gnome-authorization from crashing, although it obviously doesn't fix the underlying problem. You run polkit-auth --obtain org.freedesktop.policykit.revoke to grant yourself the revoke privilege, and then polkit-auth --revoke ACTION_NAME to revoke the block. Re: [Bug 191137] Re: [Hardy] ACPI Embedded Controller (EC) stops boot when kernel boot 'quiet' option is enabled or AC power is connected
Matt, you can configure the boot options by pressing escape at the grub count down, pressing e to enter the edit mode, then edit what you wish. Pressing b when you are done will boot the kernel with your modified options. That should at least get you to the installer. i actually don't know the first thing about WUBI, or how to solve this problem to work with WUBI, but good luck to you sir. [Bug 128320] Re: [gutsy] special keys on laptop don't work on Toshiba Satellite A105
Here's my latest status for my Satellite A105: Web, Play/Pause, Stop, Forward Reverse all work. The Media Player key itself doesn't work - it should probably launch Rhythmbox, but it does not. Fn+Esc (mute / unmute) does register in the computer and an icon comes up which shows muting and unmuting, but it doesn't actually affect the volume at all. Fn+F1 (lock) does not work. Fn+F2, power profiles, does not work. Fn+F3, hardware suspend, does work (but resume doesn't work). Fn+F4, software suspend, does not work. Fn+F5, toggle between laptop and other monitor, does not work. Fn+F6 and Fn+F7, brightness down and up respectively, do work but the brightness doesn't really go down as far as I'd like for some situations. Fn+F8, something to do with WiFi, does not work. Fn+F9, to toggle the touchpad, does not work. (I especially wish that one worked!) FN+F10, zoom, does not work. Fn+F11, numpad lock, does work. Fn+F12, sync, does not work. Fn+1 and Fn+2 don't work, but I'm not sure what they're supposed to do. [Bug 222322] Re: IDE hard drives not visible
** Summary changed: - IDE addressing screwed in Hardy + IDE hard drives not visible ** Description changed: - Binary package hint: file-roller + Binary package hint: linux kernel - The addressing of IDE devices is screwed. Rather than address as hda hdb - hdc hdd they are being addressed in Hardy as sda sdb. This works if you - only have one IDE drive on hda. It gets misinterpreted as sda, but is - functional. + Not all IDE hard drives being detected and reported in fdisk -l. - The problem becomes clearly apparent when you start putting hard drives - on the secondary IDE controller. For example when you have one drive as - master on hda and another as master on the secondary controller on hdc. - Only hda is picked up and converted to sda. Unfortunately hdc is not - visible. Doing 'fdisk -l' only reports on drives on the primary - controller. + In earlier kernels IDE devices were accessed as hda hdb hdc hdd. It + would seem that these are now being mapped to sda sdb etc. + + One of my IDE hard drives is not being detected. + + The problem seems to relate to putting hard drives on the secondary IDE + controller. For example when you have one drive as master on hda and + another as master on the secondary controller on hdc. Only hda is picked + up and converted to sda. Unfortunately hdc is not visible. Doing 'fdisk + -l' only reports on drives on the primary controller. Furthermore, in other configurations, I have had only drives on the secondary controller being picked up, with drives on the primary controller invisible. My hardware is under two years old. Gutsy works fine. Gutsy correctly addresses my IDE devices. I have for much of yesterday and today been attempting to install Hardy. But without success. I tried a fresh install of Dapper, and upgrade to Hardy, but that failed with unresolvable dependencies, that did not resolve when instructions to -f install were followed. So I did a fresh install of Gutsy and upgrade to Hardy. This correctly - addressed my IDE devices in Gutsy, but were screwed after the upgrade + addressed my IDE devices in Gutsy, but failed after the upgrade (otherwise successful) to Hardy. Being totally disillusioned with Hardy, I installed Fedora Core 8 (just - released). Interestingly, the same screwup in IDE addressing occurred - there also. So this leads me to believe the source of this show stopper - bug, is somewhere upstream. + released). Interestingly, the same fault occurred there also. So this + leads me to believe the source of this show stopper bug, is somewhere + upstream. I am forced to abandon Hardy, and will make do with Gutsy, until a resolution to this bug is made available. Maybe related to this. [Bug 201813] Re: Ubuntu hangs at shutdown
I believe that this is the same issue which prevents the EeePC from turning off when shutting down - caused by snd-hda-intel. This is a widely documented problem with the EeePC, and a workaround is described in the Ubuntu Community Documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC#head-59652af56e26236e0c4076af54096c7f0cc52d02 Although this problem is written about widely, it is strange that this bug has not been reported more widely on Launchpad. We really need a proper fix to be distributed to encourage the use of Ubuntu on the EeePC. ** Summary changed: - Gutsy hangs at shutdown + Ubuntu hangs at shutdown ** Description changed: PROBLEM: - Gutsy Gibbon hangs at shutdown and doesn't power off. + Ubuntu hangs at shutdown and doesn't power off. REMARKS: - At shutdown, the following message appears: NetworkManager: WARN nm_hal_deinit(): libhal shutdown failed - connection is closed - Some suspicious messages from dmesg: hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC880, trying auto-probe from BIOS... hda_codec: Cannot set up configuration from BIOS. Using 3-stack mode... apm: disabled - APM is not SMP safe. - To use the command sudo rmmod -w snd_hda_intel solves the problem and the computer power off. Furthermore, the network warning does not appear. To use the switch -f does not unload the module. - The system does not hibernate when using pidgin and, sometimes, firefox and it never suspends. CONCLUSION There is no conclusion since the source of the problem is not clear. It could be the sound driver, the network driver, the energy management or whatever else. [Bug 222931] [NEW] Gparted can't resize NTFS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gparted Not sure how to best install this, but confirmed it with several recent versions of gparted, including the one inside the live Hardy CD, two bootable gparted CDs, and a Mandriva live CD. The gparted program runs normally, but the NTFS partition cannot be resized. There is a yellow triangle with an exclamation point, and the information says that BadClust could not be decompressed, that the contents are unreadable, and that some operations are not available, obviously including the resizing operation. The partition can be mounted, and I can wander around inside the data files, but of course that locks the partition in gparted, and it still can't be resized. Unmounting it also works, but then it goes back to the yellow triangle state... Not sure how much background of what kind is needed, but here goes: The machine in question is a Sharp PC-WA70-L. I've been running Ubuntu in the other partition for about a year. The machine ships with the main NTFS partition (about 80 GB), a smaller partition that I converted for Ubuntu (about 11 GB), and a recovery partition (about 6 GB), so I didn't need to use gparted before this. However, now I want to split off a fresh partition and try Hardy from scratch there. Ubuntu has never run that well on the machine, actually, and based on the live CD tests, it already seems pretty certain that at least one of the problems remains unsolved. As usual, I'll be glad to do a certain amount of diagnostic work, but I don't want to make a career out of it... ** Affects: gparted (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gparted can't resize NTFS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/222931 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
