[Bug 205111] Re: likewise-open service does not start automatically

2008-04-27 Thread Larry
This same problem happens to me on a fresh install of 8.04 release as
well. It is misleading because domain login will work after joining the
domain with the likewise open gui but then fails after system reboot. I
assume this is because the gui starts winbindd but on reboot winbind
does not start.

[Bug 223119] [NEW] sshd: PAM adding faulty module

2008-04-27 Thread Bolek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openssh-server

After installing Hardy Heron, I see following messages in my long when
connecting to my system using SSH (telnet and ftp are disabled so I
cannot comment on those):

Apr 27 10:52:03 tux-229 sshd[733]: PAM adding faulty module:
/lib/security/migrate
Apr 27 10:52:03 tux-229 sshd[733]: PAM unable to dlopen(/lib/security/nullok)
Apr 27 10:52:03 tux-229 sshd[733]: PAM [error: /lib/security/nullok: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory]

Each time a connection is made, these three entries are added. I
checked the pointers, and indeed, these modules are not installed:

/lib/security/migrate
/lib/security/nullok
/lib/security/migrate

Providing that I have performed a standard Hardy Heron installation, I
cannot imagine the above three mentioned security modules were
'optional' and would require me to install them manually. Can anybody,
please, comment on this? This issue was not present in Gutsy and I can
say with certainty, that it is a Hardy Heron 'phenomenon'.

Information as per your request:

1)

Description:Ubuntu 8.04

2)
= apt-cache policy openssh-server openssh-client

  Version table:
 *** 1:4.7p1-8ubuntu1 0

3) I do not expect to see following message in the log upon logging via
ssh:

Apr 27 10:52:05 tux-229 sshd[1059]: PAM adding faulty module:

Apr 27 10:52:05 tux-229 sshd[1059]: PAM unable to dlopen(/lib/security/nullok)
Apr 27 10:52:05 tux-229 sshd[1059]: PAM [error: /lib/security/nullok: cannot

4) No applicable as per #3. It appears that PAM modules are missing as
per my earlier description of the problem.

[Bug 220844] Re: wbinfo fails to enumerate users and groups

2008-04-27 Thread spencer
I've discovered what's happening here. On the Debian etch development
box that these steps worked, the IP address is set statically, outside
the normal DHCP range. On the Ubuntu 8.04 workstation that I performed
the above, the IP address was set dynamically.

I discovered that I could work around this problem by giving the
workstation a manual IP address and registering it with DNS. If I then
re-join the domain, I can properly enumerate users and groups and log
in. This seems to either be a bug or by design, but something is
definitely wrong if I have to set a static IP by hand in Linux but not
in Windows.

Re: [Bug 221737] Re: upsd doesn't start on system startup

2008-04-27 Thread Arnaud Quette
moot point guys.
NUT can be a network master (same for standalone boxes), requiring
driver+upsd+upsmon, or a net slave requiring only upsmon.
So if there was a component to be started in all cases, that would be upsmon.
but this is void, and it would simply fail if there is no upsd running
and no suitable config.
the same would go for upsd, if there is no ups.conf+upsd.{conf,users}.
And running only driver+upsd in the best case doesn't protect you:
here you need upsmon.

[Bug 223376] Re: root, not postfix, owns /var/spool/postfix

2008-04-27 Thread Scott Kitterman
This is not actually a bug. The correct solution is to have the cache
where a fresh Postfix install would put it:

data_directory = /var/lib/postfix
smtp_tls_session_cache_database = btree:${data_directory}/smtp_scache
smtpd_tls_session_cache_database = btree:${data_directory}/smtpd_scache
tls_random_exchange_name = ${data_directory}/prng_exch

This was the result of an upstream change for Postfix 2.5. I'd suggest
changing your configuration to put the cache in /var/lib/postfix and
change the permissions back. That's what a fresh install would have
given you.

Marking Won't Fix because if you'd upgraded with an old main.cf, you'd
have had the same situation. We didn't come up with a safe way to
automatically make the change.

[Bug 222913] [NEW] misleading LTS tag for ubuntu 8.04 on main site www.ubuntu.com

2008-04-27 Thread mkl
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 is tagged for Long Term Support (LTS)
Kubuntu 8.04 is not .
Since both share the same repository and ubuntu can be easily turn into kubuntu

the customers may be confused.
Please add star at the LTS (*) and explain the LTS does not apply to kde*.deb
packages.
The same way, explain the custumers may get LTS support in kubuntu for other
packages except the kde*.deb

What is the legal status of ubuntu. If a custumer buys the commercial
support from Canonical for ubuntu 8.04 and removes gnome and installs
KDE? Is the support going for 36 months or 18 months?

Please be honest, don't lay, cheat and mislead your customers. They

[Bug 222322] Re: IDE addressing screwed in Hardy

2008-04-27 Thread Don Malcolm
No Darko, it is not to do with uuid in the fstab.

For the record, the fstab does use UUID to identify the disks.

Please read more carefully. You will see that I have stated, that fdisk
-l does not report all my disks. Furhermore you will see that I have
included output from lshw. If you would kindly take the time to examine
the output of lshw from Dapper and Hardy installs, you will see that a
disk is missing from the Hardy install that is present in the Dapper
install. Note that this output was taken from my current hardware
configuration. As I have stated above, Dapper is installed in the second
partition on the master of the primary controller. Hardy is installed on
the first partition on the master of the primary controller.

Furthermore please note that when attempting to install Hardy in a disk
on the seconday IDE controller, the install fails because it fails in
the kernel to identify all my drives. I suspect the reason for the file
not found message I stated above, was that it installed on the disk on
the secondary controller, but then on reboot, the disk was no longer
visible.

It does not appear to me to be a configuration issue, but rather a
kernel issue. Why? As I stated above, the problem also exists in Fedora
Core 8, also by booting Hardy but with the Gutsy kernel, all disks are
identified properly. Simply changing the kernel and only the kernel to
an earlier kernel, the system is fully operational with all disks
correctly identified in fdisk -l.

Point taken regarding use of sda in place of hda. I was not aware of
this change. It would seem there are bugs in this change over.

Configurations that failed for me in Hardy:

1) Two drives, with one as master on the primary controller, and one as
master on the secondary controller. Only one drive shows up in fdisk -l

2) Three drives, with two on the primary controller and the other as
master on the secondary. Only two drives show up.

3) Three drives, with two on the secondary controller and the other as
master on the primary. Only two drives show up.

At the moment, I am running Hardy with two drives on the primary
controller, with both drives accessible, and the third as master on the
secondary controller, and is not visible in fdisk -l.

I'm experiencing the same problem here I think. I have an eeepc running

chip. I just installed Hardy on it and openarena is now very buggy.
Before when I was using the i810 driver there was no problem. Now
openarena runs very slow and eventually locks up forcing me to kill X.
After the gdm starts up again compiz no longer works.

[Bug 222914] [NEW] Nvidia (new) driver not loaded

Nvidia drivers worked perfectly after using envy in Fiesty. After
upgrade to Hardy, only the mesa drivers me full resolution. After
running envyng and then rebooting I get the message that the display
can't start properly and can choose to configure or continue. Envyng
reports 'completed' after running.

[Bug 222915] [NEW] Seahorse shouldn't add passphrase to login keyring

Public bug reported:

When I select the option remember PGP passphrases as long as I'm logged

[Bug 194029] Re: 2.6.24-8 Introduces Network Issue

2008-04-27 Thread SireeBob
Yet another me too from me, considering this is triaged. I was having
a slightly different problem than commonly described here, because my
Ubuntu Hardy laptop is the server and my desktop is the client. When my
mouse was on my desktop, and I clicked something, there would be a
varying delayed reaction up to about 5 seconds. But if, when it's having
a delayed reaction, I move the mouse, then it continues. So if I click a
button, I have the move the mouse after that for the click to register -
or wait a few seconds.

So I decided to try making my desktop the server. That's when I started
experiencing huge delays and temporary mouse lockups, as described here.
Running as root does prevent the problem, even for the server (thanks,
PSCArmstrSM!), but a fix would be really nice.

[Bug 215374] Re: Vim crash when trying to expand a path

2008-04-27 Thread dominiko
Yes, I can reproduce that too.

This bug has already been fixed in latest vim from CVS (in patch 7.1.147
which was released on Tue, Oct 30, 2007). But Ubuntu Hardy is using
an older version: vim-7.1.138 (which was released on Oct 9, 2007).

Here is the patch description which fixes it:

7.1.147 (after 7.1.127) freeing memory twice completing user name

Can we backport a more recent vim? It would fix several issues.

The latest vim from CVS is vim-7.1.293 (apr-9) which I've been using and
testing since it was released looks very stable. Updating would fix not
only this issue but other opened vim issues which I have investigated
such as at least:

- bug #215374 (this bug) (fixed in vim-7.1.147)
- bug #129106 vim crashes when gnome-terminal tab is detached (fixed in
vim-7.1.166)
- bug #68960 fix hangs when editing a specific file (fixed in vim 7.1.227)
- bug #219546 vim crashes when pressing tab and using rails.vim (no longer
happens in latest vim-7.1.293, not sure which patch fixes it, possibly also
7.1.147)

[Bug 194029] Re: 2.6.24-8 Introduces Network Issue

2008-04-27 Thread Joseph Fannin
This bug has been triaged; the cause of the bug seems to be known.

Yes, the root cause of this bug can introduce lags and general desktop
unresponsiveness in other applications. It's a kernel scheduler option
that's known to the (upstream) developers to cause scheduling problems
and which has unfortunately been enabled in the Hardy 8.04 release.

The fix seems to be in the pipeline:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-hardy.git;a=commit;h=273f7b551a420580307fa414fe616f0e276a4035

Hopefully this will be released as an update soon.

[Bug 188972] Re: mic not working on dell vostro 1400 with hda intel (gutsy and hardy)

2008-04-27 Thread Leslie
Hi, I have an HP Pavilion dv6747. It has an Intel HDA Chipset and I have
had the same problem but followed stereoit's instructions and got it
working.

What I did was dble click on the volume control which opened the task bar. Only
the play back tab was avalible.
Went to editpreferences and ticked everything
Then went back and looked at the recording tab and changed both Capture and
Digital to about 75%.
I also edited the Front Mic Boost to about 50%
Also went to the options tab and changed it to Front Mic (oringally was
Mic).

This got the inbuilt mic working. I have no external mic to test with.

Also the recordings in audacity all need normalising, it might have
something to do with the front mic boost but i really have no idea.

I am having this problem as well, specifically with sites like

[Bug 215355] Re: polkit-gnome-authorization crashed with SIGSEGV in gdk_pixbuf_saturate_and_pixelate()

2008-04-27 Thread Michael Mrozek
I have the same problem, I can't find a workaround for polkit-gnome-
authorization. If it helps, you can revoke the blocks using the command-
line, which will stop polkit-gnome-authorization from crashing, although
it obviously doesn't fix the underlying problem. You run polkit-auth
--obtain org.freedesktop.policykit.revoke to grant yourself the revoke
privilege, and then polkit-auth --revoke ACTION_NAME to revoke the
block. You might have to have the environment variable
POLKIT_AUTH_FORCE_TEXT set to see anything, I did.

RE: [Bug 190450] Re: Can't compile ov511-source on hardy

2008-04-27 Thread Dropbear

you need to use the forceblock=1 option
type the following in a terminal

sudo rmmod ov51x-jpeg
sudo modprobe ov51x-jpeg forceblock=1

then start skype

to enable it permanently add the line

options ov51x-jpeg forceblock=1

to the file /etc/modprobe.d/options

 Hi,

the VF0330 camera works fine (I added the initial support for it).
The initial patch I submitted to launchpad allows the camera to work
with skype through a workaround. The workaround hasn't made it to the
Ubuntu package though as it is, well, a hack (see previous posts to know
 more).
So, to summarise, you can simply apply the patch I initially sent on top
of the new ov51x-jpeg source until skype gets fixed.

 Hope this helps,

A badblocks run on a 1TB HDD starts returning errors after reaching

Re: [Bug 191137] Re: [Hardy] ACPI Embedded Controller (EC) stops boot when kernel boot 'quiet' option is enabled or AC power is connected

2008-04-27 Thread Thomas McKay
Matt,

you can configure the boot options by pressing escape at the grub count
down, pressing e to enter the edit mode, then edit what you wish. Pressing
b when you are done will boot the kernel with your modified options. That
should at least get you to the installer.

i actually don't know the first thing about WUBI, or how to solve this
problem to work with WUBI, but good luck to you sir.

[Bug 128320] Re: [gutsy] special keys on laptop don't work on Toshiba Satellite A105

2008-04-27 Thread Ryan Prior
Here's my latest status for my Satellite A105:

Web, Play/Pause, Stop, Forward Reverse all work. The Media Player key
itself doesn't work - it should probably launch Rhythmbox, but it does
not.

Fn+Esc (mute / unmute) does register in the computer and an icon comes
up which shows muting and unmuting, but it doesn't actually affect the
volume at all. Fn+F1 (lock) does not work. Fn+F2, power profiles, does
not work. Fn+F3, hardware suspend, does work (but resume doesn't work).
Fn+F4, software suspend, does not work. Fn+F5, toggle between laptop and
other monitor, does not work. Fn+F6 and Fn+F7, brightness down and up
respectively, do work but the brightness doesn't really go down as far
as I'd like for some situations. Fn+F8, something to do with WiFi, does
not work. Fn+F9, to toggle the touchpad, does not work. (I especially
wish that one worked!) FN+F10, zoom, does not work. Fn+F11, numpad lock,
does work. Fn+F12, sync, does not work. Fn+1 and Fn+2 don't work, but
I'm not sure what they're supposed to do. Fn+Space, to zoom, does not
work.

Simple to see and to reproduce. When I launch cheese I cannot use its

Everything is working OK besides this small problem. Could be related to

Actually, until they make a module for hardy,
you can change the sources.list file to point to etch instead of hardy that
fixes it - apparently the same kernel rev.

[Bug 222925] [NEW] Dell Inspiron Fn key on Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 [KDE 3.5.9]

2008-04-27 Thread TWO
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kmilo

#Dell Inspiron 1300
#'Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04
#KDE 3.5.9
#kmilo 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu3

The Fn (function) key works for all but two short cuts:

Fn + F10 = eject CD
Fn + F2 = enable/ disable wireless

To reproduce, simply attempt the following on a Dell Inspiron laptop.
This one is a 1300, but I assume that others have the same keyboard
layout more or less.

[Bug 222322] Re: IDE hard drives not visible

2008-04-27 Thread Don Malcolm
** Summary changed:

- IDE addressing screwed in Hardy
+ IDE hard drives not visible

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: file-roller
+ Binary package hint: linux kernel

- The addressing of IDE devices is screwed. Rather than address as hda hdb
- hdc hdd they are being addressed in Hardy as sda sdb. This works if you
- only have one IDE drive on hda. It gets misinterpreted as sda, but is
- functional.
+ Not all IDE hard drives being detected and reported in fdisk -l.

- The problem becomes clearly apparent when you start putting hard drives
- on the secondary IDE controller. For example when you have one drive as
- master on hda and another as master on the secondary controller on hdc.
- Only hda is picked up and converted to sda. Unfortunately hdc is not
- visible. Doing 'fdisk -l' only reports on drives on the primary
- controller.
+ In earlier kernels IDE devices were accessed as hda hdb hdc hdd. It
+ would seem that these are now being mapped to sda sdb etc.
+
+ One of my IDE hard drives is not being detected.
+
+ The problem seems to relate to putting hard drives on the secondary IDE
+ controller. For example when you have one drive as master on hda and
+ another as master on the secondary controller on hdc. Only hda is picked
+ up and converted to sda. Unfortunately hdc is not visible. Doing 'fdisk
+ -l' only reports on drives on the primary controller.

Furthermore, in other configurations, I have had only drives on the
secondary controller being picked up, with drives on the primary
  controller invisible.

My hardware is under two years old.

Gutsy works fine. Gutsy correctly addresses my IDE devices.

I have for much of yesterday and today been attempting to install Hardy.
But without success. I tried a fresh install of Dapper, and upgrade to
Hardy, but that failed with unresolvable dependencies, that did not
resolve when instructions to -f install were followed.

So I did a fresh install of Gutsy and upgrade to Hardy. This correctly
- addressed my IDE devices in Gutsy, but were screwed after the upgrade
+ addressed my IDE devices in Gutsy, but failed after the upgrade
  (otherwise successful) to Hardy.

Being totally disillusioned with Hardy, I installed Fedora Core 8 (just
- released). Interestingly, the same screwup in IDE addressing occurred
- there also. So this leads me to believe the source of this show stopper
- bug, is somewhere upstream.
+ released). Interestingly, the same fault occurred there also. So this
+ leads me to believe the source of this show stopper bug, is somewhere
+ upstream.

I am forced to abandon Hardy, and will make do with Gutsy, until a
resolution to this bug is made available.

Maybe related to this. On another machine that has no IDE devices
connected, the grub bootloader in Hardy failed, and gave the option of
LILO during the install. It now is fully functional using the LILO
  bootloader.

[Bug 222246] Re: lost screen real estate with ubuntu 8.04 upgrade

Solved!

It was due to the Lightning extension. I had the version 0.7 of

not the Lightning extension. Funnily Thunderbird did not complain about
the incompatible Lightning extension. Anyway after uninstalling

deathrow, Synaptics allows you to force a specific version for each package

[Bug 68224] Re: OpenOffice artifacts when using fglrx

2008-04-27 Thread Rami Autiomäki
I just tried this with fglrx without 3D-accelaration and it seems to work
better. It won't leave artifacts, but guide line is still continous.
With open source Ati driver guide line leaves artefacts even with
3D-acceleration disabled.
With fglrx 3D-accelaration enabled and xorg.conf option Option
XaaNoMono8x8PatternFillRect true guide line won't leave artifacts, but
is still continous. When I added option Option XaaNoPixmapCache true
guide line was dotted and worked as it worked with Vesa driver. Maybe some
xserver developer can say what is happening here.
This same issue is reported in openoffice bug tracker in past, but this bug is
closed.

[Bug 201813] Re: Ubuntu hangs at shutdown

2008-04-27 Thread Matt Austin
I believe that this is the same issue which prevents the EeePC from
turning off when shutting down - caused by snd-hda-intel.

This is a widely documented problem with the EeePC, and a workaround is
described in the Ubuntu Community Documentation:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC#head-59652af56e26236e0c4076af54096c7f0cc52d02

Although this problem is written about widely, it is strange that this
bug has not been reported more widely on Launchpad.

We really need a proper fix to be distributed to encourage the use of
Ubuntu on the EeePC.

+ Ubuntu hangs at shutdown and doesn't power off.

  REMARKS:

  - At shutdown, the following message appears:
NetworkManager: WARN nm_hal_deinit(): libhal shutdown failed - connection
is closed

  - Some suspicious messages from dmesg:
hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC880, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
hda_codec: Cannot set up configuration from BIOS. Using 3-stack mode...
apm: disabled - APM is not SMP safe.

  - To use the command sudo rmmod -w snd_hda_intel solves the problem
and the computer power off. Furthermore, the network warning does not
appear. To use the switch -f does not unload the module.

  - The system does not hibernate when using pidgin and, sometimes,
  firefox and it never suspends.

  CONCLUSION

There is no conclusion since the source of the problem is not clear. It
could be the sound driver, the network driver, the energy management or
whatever else. This bug has been largely reported and confirmed (since
6.06), but never solved, I don't know why.

[Bug 222929] [NEW] Samba config saved to incorrect file when creating shares in Advanced sharing mode

2008-04-27 Thread Naveen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdenetwork-filesharing

When creating shares the configuration is written to
/etc/samba/smb.conf; (note trailing semicolon) instead of
/etc/samba/smb.conf

Steps to reproduce
1) open System settings - Sharing - File Sharing, switch to Administrator
mode and select Advanced sharing mode
2) open konqueror and right click on any folder outside the home folder and
click share from the context menu
3) select Share this folder and Share with Samba checkboxes and press Ok, enter
password when prompted
Note: this also happens when using System settings as normal user once Advanced

[Bug 200500] Re: WLAN loosing connection: No ProbeResp

2008-04-27 Thread JoshuaPurcell
I'm having the same issue. Here's uname -a:
Linux laptop 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 02:46:46 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux

Attached is the output from lspci -vvnn. Also I'll post the output of dmesg
after the problem has occurred (and I have reloaded the kernel module). This
problem happens all the time on my laptop (anywhere from 2-3 times/hour), and
it is always fixed by doing this:
sudo killall NetworkManager
sudo modprobe -r iwl4965
sleep 2
sudo modprobe iwl4965
sudo NetworkManager

I'll attach my dmesg from just after startup if necessary. Thanks for
any help.

[Bug 200500] Re: WLAN loosing connection: No ProbeResp

2008-04-27 Thread JoshuaPurcell
Sorry about multiple posts in a row, but I found this link that may be helpful
in solving the issue:
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=29255

In the first post of that thread, the guy poster says that he solves the
problem by doing the following:
At moment i've raised the value of IEEE80211_MONITORING_INTERVAL in
ieee80211/ieee80211_sta.c file.

#define IEEE80211_MONITORING_INTERVAL (1000 * HZ)

[Bug 114025] Re: Problem with wine preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-60000000

2008-04-27 Thread t.cornall
It doesn't seem to just affect DOS/WIN16 -- it was causing MS Word 2000
to crash after a few seconds, under both wine 0.9.60 and, interestingly,
Crossover Office.

The change to /etc/sysctl.conf fixes it. Thanks for the information.

[Bug 111018] Re: Monitor goes to sleep and does not get up

2008-04-27 Thread sicofante
I'm using a Hardy amd64 fresh install and this happens as well. I did,
however, set monitor to sleep after 5 min in power management. I just
put it to Never and will check if this still happens.

Also, Hardy can't seem to suspend properly here, but I'll report this
elsewhere.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H (http://www.giga-
byte.es/products/mb/specs/ga-ma69gm-s2h_10.html).

I haven't used Ubuntu with this mobo before.

[Bug 222934] [NEW] libQt3Support.so.4 missing

2008-04-27 Thread Cafuego
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ia32-libs

The /usr/lib32/libQt3Support.so* files are not present in the package.
The do exist in /usr/lib under the amd64 arch, in the libqt4-dev
package. Unfortunately Google Earth 4.3 needs it, so that does currently
not work under amd64 without running in a 32bit chroot.

[Bug 222931] [NEW] Gparted can't resize NTFS

2008-04-27 Thread shanen (Shannon Jacobs)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

Not sure how to best install this, but confirmed it with several recent
versions of gparted, including the one inside the live Hardy CD, two
bootable gparted CDs, and a Mandriva live CD. The gparted program runs
normally, but the NTFS partition cannot be resized. There is a yellow
triangle with an exclamation point, and the information says that
BadClust could not be decompressed, that the contents are unreadable,
and that some operations are not available, obviously including the
resizing operation. The partition can be mounted, and I can wander
around inside the data files, but of course that locks the partition in
gparted, and it still can't be resized. Unmounting it also works, but
then it goes back to the yellow triangle state...

Not sure how much background of what kind is needed, but here goes: The
machine in question is a Sharp PC-WA70-L. I've been running Ubuntu in
the other partition for about a year. The machine ships with the main
NTFS partition (about 80 GB), a smaller partition that I converted for
Ubuntu (about 11 GB), and a recovery partition (about 6 GB), so I didn't
need to use gparted before this. However, now I want to split off a
fresh partition and try Hardy from scratch there. Ubuntu has never run
that well on the machine, actually, and based on the live CD tests, it
already seems pretty certain that at least one of the problems remains
unsolved.

As usual, I'll be glad to do a certain amount of diagnostic work, but I
don't want to make a career out of it...
