[Bug 195982] Re: Shift key (and caps lock) stop working when using VMWare

2008-05-15 Thread Scott Fujan
I also had this exact bug. No modifiers, Firefox crashing on keyboard
input. Running setxkbmap worked for me, so I setup a shortcut to run it
with the mouse whenever the modifiers went crazy.

But I recently uninstalled VMware Tools from my guest OS (winxp) and
reinstalled using the image that comes with vmware-server (VM-Install
VMware Tools). Since then I haven't seen the issue again.

Of note: I am using an old vmware image that I built with an older
version of VMware (and Tools).

[Bug 209053] Re: KDE 4 Migration - GUI is rendered huge

2008-05-15 Thread Julien Fouquet
Hi there. I've always had that problem myself and before KDE 4.0 I had
always been able to fix it thanks to gdm/kdm config file (depending on
the one I had on my laptop).

Well this time it went all differently when installing Kubuntu Remix.
Once installed, when the login screen appeared I switched to text mode
(CTRL +ALT +, say, F5), and went looking for such a conf file as I was
used to doing in older versions of (K)Ubuntu. I soon gave up.

But just now I found the way to solve this in a forum. It not only
solves the login screen High DPI fonts you are used to, but also the
all-KDE4 dpi problem and all. I can't tell whether it is correct to
solve this that way, but it works and seems to be a good work-around at
least.

Just go to your xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/ and change it,

1. At login screen, press CTRL+ALT+F5 (or another working one)
2. log in with your user account
3. then go to the proper directory using cd /etc/X11
4. then edit it as root using sudo pico xorg.conf
5. go down to the screen section and insert a line (which should be the last
line between Section Screen and EndSection)
6. here is the line to add: Option DDC no
7. Leave using CTRL+X and pico asks you whether to save, answer yes, of course.
8. once back to the shell prompt, just reboot the computer usingsudo
reboot
9. Enjoy!

I hope this helps.

[Bug 153521] Re: fonts are blurred with subpixel rendering

2008-05-15 Thread Victor Cache
8.04 Hardy official release plus updates through today still has this blurry
font bug.
I use and LCD. Note on a minority of reboots (maybe 1 out of 5) the fonts
would be clear but 4 out of 5 times the fonts are blurry.
Johan's workaround has fixed it (for at least 1 reboot).
System -- Preferences -- Appearance -- Fonts : neither Best Shapes nor
Subpixel Smoothing settings fix it.
Ubuntu developers: please fix this.

I tried to install a server from the Ubuntu 8.04 DVD, but the menu
doesn't react if I select server and press Return. After that, I

worked fine.

I tried this on two different computers with the 64-bit DVD, and on one

emails encoding is correct, but contact one is not.

using a minimal system without Ubuntu-desktop but with Gnome-* package.

I think it's reasonable to add all supported browsers as
mozilla-mplayer dependency. If the user doesn't have supported browser
installed, what's the point of mozilla-mplayer on his system?

When you say brower-package you mean a empty package that depends on a
browser? (empty == meta package) just sued to get deps.

I'm thinking on any browser that can make use of mozilla-mplayer. But,
as I said before, that situation is very rare. There are not that many
browsers out there, which would be added, so the previous example is
not that important.

[Bug 2772] Re: [feisty] vlc key shortcuts doesnt work

2008-05-15 Thread mnemo
The next VLC version has been in the making for a very long time, I
don't see it as particularly likely that this VLC branch will stabilize
and ship properly before Inteprid Ibex. And even when it does ship there
might be people who wants to stay with the old version for just a little
while longer until the odd bugs in the new version in ironed out. All in
all, it sounds like a good idea to branch the current stable VLC into a
special Ubuntu version which has the modified keys only. On the next
release VLC can be synced anyway (not merged) because the new branch
will have the keys fixed already. Also, it should be extremely easy to
add the most common shortcut keys (like F and SPACE etc), probably a
couple of lines of code at most.

Being able to press F and SPACE would really contribute to the
polished feel of my Ubuntu desktop. It's one of the few bugs that I
actually run into on a regular basis (the other one being bug #21202 ).

Binary package hint: coreutils

Changelog since the hardy version 6.10-3ubuntu2:

coreutils (6.10-6ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable, remaining changes:
- invoke autoconf during the build so that the patch to use getgrouplist
  will really take effect
- debian/coreutils.preinst: Add bug numbers in comment.
  * debian/patches/60_ubuntu-force-clobber-specials.patch removed because
Debian version incorporates a different fix from upstream to the same
problem.

 -- Lars Wirzenius [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu, 15 May 2008 18:23:19 +0300

coreutils (6.10-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * [76] Add ubuntu/upstream patch to prevent failure of cp of a special
(e.g., fifo) file to an existing file
  * [71] change getgrouplist patch to skip the autoconf test and use
getgrouplist unconditionally. (Patch isn't immediately ready for
upstream anyway, and I assume that glibc provides this function
on all our supported platforms. If this turns out to not be true,
I'll revisit.) (Closes: #459615)

you press save nad quit it will reload the pages that were last open.As
for just opening the last visited page it will not do this by defaukt
due to your home page set up, if you look in prefferneces it should have
something that says to open last visted page. What is set In firefox

[Bug 230872] [NEW] failure to sort files based on their names

2008-05-15 Thread LimCore
Public bug reported:

Sometimes when users say sort by name applications sort by name
(alphabetically).

But this is apparently too simple, so Krusader sorts name in own a bit
random way.

Example, files sorted by Name appear as following:

blogs_cat-pl.html
blog_section_cats-pl.html
blog_section_cats_setup-pl.html
blogs_new-pl.html
blogs-pl.html
blog_style-pl.html

So apparently blogs, blog, blogs, blog is the correct sorting, in
opinion of the Developers.

No, the o is not some strange unicode characters, thoes are normal
ASCII charset names.

[Bug 225400] Re: web page - X server crash/blank, no display until reboot [Q965]

2008-05-15 Thread Mike Coleman
The problem seems not to occur without rotation. Disabling
visualization appears to have no effect (the display still blanks). The
machine is pingable after the display blanks--I suspect that it's still
running, except for the X display being unusable.

When I clicked on the link without rotation, a totem plugin started up,
but I don't think the mp3 itself began playing, and I saw no graphics
other than the minimal UI (this was prior to disabling visualization).
I think it was probably just sitting there waiting for me to press the
play button. So, it seems like visualiation is not the cause, but
rather whatever basic X things the totem plugin does. (?)

More background: Rotation on this display didn't work correctly until
this version of Ubuntu. Previously it'd sort of work, but there was
lots of screen crap and the server would crash after being used for a
bit.

Also, if I'm on a rotated display and I use the Screen Resolution
widget to try to unrotate it, the display goes into a flashing unusable
state until reboot. It does appear, though, that I can log out of a
rotated display and into an unrotated display with no trouble.

2008-05-15 Thread Jan Hoogenraad
Could you please help me out a little more on how to compile samba, so
that I can try it as well ?

I installed git and autogen from the package manager.
Then I got the git package as described in:
http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Using_Git_for_Samba_Development
I did autogen.sh in the samba/source directory, and then followed the
instructions from
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=707370highlight=cifs+samba+hardy
Now, no smbmount executable was generated.
furthermore 'make install' installed everything into /usr/local/samba.
With starting mount.cifs in that directory, I could not mount directories, but
I suspect this has to do with that it's still using hardy's libraries.

makes landing on the right sequence of steps difficult.

The two times I did connect with WPA, I decided to 'play around a bit'
and see exactly what the key to it was, and I permanently lost the
connection until the next boot, but mind you that it will not connect at
boot even though I'm using the rc.local script. I still have to play
around with it to connect.

So, apparently, once it goes down, only a reboot and more fiddling
solves it. I have tried the following 'resets', to no avail:

* /etc/init.d/networking restart
* /etc/init.d/dbus restart

I have tried ap_scan set to 0, 1 and 2. I have invoked wpa_supplicant
in two combinations:

1) -Bw without -d or -dd
2) -w with -dd

I will be playing with it more this week as I have time (and hair to
pull), and I'll report what I find.

[Bug 200509] Re: iwl4965: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000

2008-05-15 Thread Bård Kalbakk
This bug was fixed in 2.6.25 early february.
Please see git-commit d68ab68066805fdfee1f5f29ec2ec0179fd92fe1
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/linville/wireless-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=d68ab68066805fdfee1f5f29ec2ec0179fd92fe1;hp=c342a1b91f6ccd317c68defd3b4c7bb75397d967

I applied this simple fix to linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-16-386, and
iwl4965.ko has not failed yet.

Please consider applying this patch to Hardy, if you're not going for
kernel 2.6.25.

[Bug 230873] [NEW] [hardy] doesn't load the current directory when opening easytag with open with ... right click menu

2008-05-15 Thread Cyrille Grosdemange
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: easytag

Ubuntu Hardy
Easytag 2.1.4

Choosing open with ... easytag in a right click menu in nautilus should open
easytag with the selected directory and load the choosen directory content.

The bug :

* I right-click on a directory in nautilus.
* I choose open with another application, then choose easytag to open with.
* Easytag is opened but the choosen directory content is not loaded.
* I right-click on the directory in the tree and choose refresh directory,
then it's correctly loaded...

I think the problem appeared in hardy version of easytag (wasn't in
gutsy)

[Bug 187918] Re: [Hardy] KDE4 logon failure: 'startkde: Could not start D-Bus. Check your installation.'

2008-05-15 Thread John Woods
I've done a bit more troubleshooting, and narrowed the problem down
some. I think it has to do with the order system services are started
relative to PAM, or some permissions setting within PAM. Here's why:

In startkde, there is a section that begins with:
# D-Bus autolaunch is broken
if test -z $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS ; then
  /etc/init.d/dbus start
  eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session`
fi
if qdbus /dev/null 2/dev/null; then
  : # ok
else
...

If I run the command inside the eval as a regular user (logged in and
authenticated via ldap), it works fine. If I eval it and then run qdbus,
that works fine too. If, however, I echo the output of those same
commands when run from within startkde (by kdm-kde4), it appears that
they're failing. They are run as the same user, too, which strikes me as
extremely odd.

Information that might be important:
bind_policy soft
- is set in ldap.conf. Appears to be important for user authentication by the
ldap server.
Also in ldap.conf, the following are set:
nss_base_passwd ou=People,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one
nss_base_shadow ou=People,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one
nss_base_group ou=Groups,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one
nss_base_aliases ou=Aliases,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one
nss_base_netgroup ou=Netgroup,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one
nss_map_attribute rfc2307attribute mapped_attribute
nss_map_objectclass rfc2307objectclass mapped_objectclass

I haven't tried knocking out individual lines to see which are mission
critical, but I suspect the first three at least are.

There's also an automatically-added line at the end of ldap.conf,
beginning with nss_initgroups_ignoreusers, which includes messagebus.

/etc/pam.d/kdm-kde4 (note: NOT /etc/pam.d/kdm as the file seems to think it is)
auth required pam_nologin.so
auth required pam_env.so readenv=1
auth required pam_env.so readenv=1 envfile=/etc/default/locale
auth sufficient pam_ldap.so # exactly the same results without this line
@include common-auth
session required pam_limits.so
@include common-account
@include common-password
@include common-session

The included files are unmodified.

Note that my /home directory is mounted by nfs (based on ldap auth), and
is on another machine. Gnome, kde3 both work fine (ran from kdm-kde4).

Any other information that I can supply which might help, please let me
know. I'm eager to try kde4, and this is all rather frustrating.

(Oh, and typos in the config lines above are *probably* my own since I'm
re-typing them from a terminal on another computer.)

Firefox-2 will not see a fix for this since it is nearing EILS and at
this point Firefox-2 will only see very Important fixes for example any
and all security risks firefox-2 wont load (do to upstream error not

im just saying this is what is planed at this point. Looks like
Firefox-3 is very near release releasing EC1 and if not blockers found
they will push that to final in a few weeks.

Yes this is a Firefox bug/feature not sure which at the moment but i see
it in Firefox-3 b5 and rc1 both of which are our(Ubuntu-MozillaTeam) builds

Im gonna wait and look at a few things to see if we can ship the fix, I
will ask our head maintainer about what he would like to do. Thiis can
be fixed in Firefox-2 in Intrepid but we are thinking about removing
Firerfox-2 just before Intrepid release if we see that Firefox-3 is
doing good standing on its feet.

[Bug 230877] [NEW] dbus inherits parent filedescriptors

2008-05-15 Thread Markus Rechberger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbus

When running mplayer the dbus library forks out the dbus-launcher which
inherits the filedescriptors of mplayer.
If one of those filedescriptors accesses a video4linux or DVB device the
filehandle will be kept open. In case of multistandard devices which support
analog TV or digital TV (or other modes) this will lock the device in the
corresponding mode until someone kills the dbus daemon.

Attached you can find a patch against the ubuntu dbus package

[Bug 230876] [NEW] msword_filter should check available disk space before copying files to /tmp

2008-05-15 Thread matze_
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

After unmounting a large truecrypt volume (file called test.doc) tracker starts
msword_filter which copies the file to /tmp.
The problem is, test.doc is a truecrypt volume of 20GB, and there are only 6GB
free on /tmp.

After doing 'truecrqpt -d', here are relevant lines from 'ps -ef':
matze 9180 1 0 19:51 ?00:00:10 /usr/bin/trackerd
matze15514 9180 0 21:19 ?00:00:00 /bin/sh
/usr/lib/tracker/filters/application/msword_filter /home/matze/test.doc [...]
matze15516 15514 72 21:19 ?00:00:01 cp /home/matze/test.doc
/tmp/tmpdir.15514/tmpfile.15514

msword_filter copies the 20GB file to /tmp although there is only 6GB free
space.
test.doc is no real word document in the first place.
I dont know what truecrypt does to the file to cause tracker to re-index. A
'touch test.doc' doesn't cause the problem.

msword_filter should check if there is enough free space available in /tmp.
Workarounds are renaming the file or putting it on the ignore list in tracker
preferences.

[Bug 228067] Re: lyx 1.5.3.1 crashes as soon as it starts

2008-05-15 Thread Cyrus Jones
Finally, success. Using the source packages from Debian unstable (LyX
1.5.5-1), I was able to build an 8.04 package for 64-bit with Prevu, an
automated backporting utility: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Prevu

A side note, LyX 1.5.5-1 in Debian unstable was released yesterday (May
14), so it has not yet been synced with Intrepid (the previous version
of LyX failed to build in Intrepid, but 1.5.5-1 should build
successfully).

As far as I have seen, the problems have gone. I have qt4.4 from hardy
backports (it's not disabled), and no problems.

I have built 64-bit packages which I can send to anyone who wants them
(send me a private message to daradib on Ubuntu Forums). I don't know
how to build 32-bit packages using Prevu on a 64-bit system, so you can
make the package yourself by installing prevu (package in repositories),
adding deb-src line for Debian Unstable, sudo apt-get update, and
running the command prevu lyx.

You could also probably just install the Debian unstable (Sid) binary
package for LyX (without modification), but I have not tried that.

[Bug 215245] Re: Yelp crashes when trying to open o help topic

2008-05-15 Thread Chris Coulson
Sebastien - I've just come back to this bug report because I've had a
similar experience with another user who isn't getting a crash report
with Apport (even though it is enabled). It turns out that Apport
doesn't catch SIGABRT, which is what Yelp is terminating with here. I
don't know if Apport is meant to catch this or not, so I asked question
33050 to try and clarify it. If it is a bug in Apport, I'll open a bug
report as I can reproduce it without fail here. If this is the intended
behaviour of Apport, then can we get Victor to submit a stacktrace with
debug symbols in to this report if he can still reproduce the crash
(using the guide at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash - the
example is with yelp funnily enough)

[Bug 188732] Re: Blinking cursor can not be deactivated anymore

2008-05-15 Thread Ben Thornton
This is ridiculous. Clearly a huge number of people are upset by this
development. a href=http://lwn.net/Articles/278995/;It even got a
mention on LWN./a

As Ralph pointed out, someone even submitted a patch to revert the bug,
and had his comments deleted for his trouble.

The least you can do is leave the bug open until the help docs get
updated. As it stands the old behavior is still documented but not
available.

This is sound of community feedback. A big fat Invalid with no
explanation is not likely to win over users. Please let us know why this
bug is invalid or leave it open until the documentation gets updated.

[Bug 211157] Re: Pairing a bluetooth device hangs a computer

2008-05-15 Thread sixdrift
I just encountered this same kind of lockup today. I have tried 2
different phones in combination with 2 different bluetooth adapters. The
lockup only occurs on one of the phones, the HTC Tilt - ATT 8925 (Win
Mobile). The Sony Ericsson (Symbian) phone does not have this problem.

When I initiate bonding from the desktop, no problems. Can connect and
browse the device. When I initiate bonding from the HTC Tilt, the system
immediately and complete freezes everything.

I tried to catch an error message. I left open two terminal windows, one
tailing /var/log/messages and the other tailing /var/log/dmesg and I
initiated bonding from the HTC Tilt. It bonded then locked and there
were no log messages issued. And when I reboot. There is no record of
any errors that I can find.

It doesn't matter what preferences or services I have enabled on the
Bluetooth Applet (0.25) the result is the same.

Using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic, gnome 2.22.1 with all
latest patches on Athlon machine with 512 MB RAM (non-descript
e-machine).

Bluetooth devices: no-name class 1 device and IOgear gbu221 (class 2).

Phones: HTC Tilt - ATT 8925 (Win Mobile) - the problem phone and Sony
Ericsson (Symbian) - the no problem phone.

This is NOT a random lockup. It happens every single time I initiate
bonding from the HTC Tilt and the lockup occurs immediately after
bonding completed message displays.

[Bug 208718] Re: nvidia-glx-new driver displays white screen of death

2008-05-15 Thread tuomask
I don't know if this is relevant but I get the white screen of death if I use
3D desktop effects and xserver-xgl is installed. This is true even with the
latest beta drivers (173.08). Apparently xserver-xgl prevents direct rendering:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xgl/+question/27148

I'm running Kubuntu 8.04 on Shuttle SP35P2 with GeForce 8600 GT.

[Bug 48893] Re: cd play (kscd on KDE via audio patch cable) stops

2008-05-15 Thread Tobias
I can confirm this:

kscd and any other program starting an audio cdrom to playback via audio
patch cable, e.g. cdplay (from cdtools package) is affected.

cd playback stops.
I could reproduce kio_audiocd from kdemultimedia-kio-plugins being responsible,
when shutting down itself.

Please read http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122524, where I reported
more stuff to KDE devel bugs page.

Hope this helps to track the problem.

Quick hotfix: deinstall kdemultimedia-kio-plugins
sudo aptitude -R purge kdemultimedia-kio-plugins

[Bug 194091] Re: Intel Wireless 4965AGN (iwl4965) network-manager doesn't work

2008-05-15 Thread DannyDei
Hello guys

I have a similar problem with my Samsung q45( uname, dmesg and lspci
attached ) : the iwl4965 works always fine from XP professional and
from Ubuntu with many routers and SSID but at home it won't get the
signal of my own router which is perfectly fine with other PCs.

I thought it was because of the old USR9111 router in Gutsy but it was
the same with Hardy and it is now the same with a new NETGEAR DG834PN :
the iwl4965 works fine from XP with a driver dated back to 27th April
2007 11.1.0.100 but it won't work with Hardy.

I've followed the

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/149214/comments/24

and tried the procedure with the drivers iwlwifi-4965-ucode-4.44 from
version 14 to version 20 taken from the site

http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?n=downloadsf=ucodep=iwlwifi

no success !! I'm curious to go back t
o the office tomorrow and see what will happen with the netgear there which was
spot on immediately !!

Anyone of you has got any idea ? It is so frustrating to use a cable
with a Super Portable Laptop !!

Thank you in advance
Danny ( Florence Italy )

[Bug 230880] [NEW] Please sync hippo-canvas 0.2.23-4.1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2008-05-15 Thread Albert Damen
Public bug reported:

Please sync hippo-canvas 0.2.23-4.1 (universe) from Debian unstable
(main)

The existing Ubuntu changes can be dropped:
- Removal of .a and .la files before dh_pycentral call: included by Debian
- Inclusion of pkgconfig file: included by Debian

As we currently have a -0ubuntu version: md5sum of orig.tar.gz in Debian and
Ubuntu are equal.
The Debian package builds fine in an Intrepid pbuilder.

Debian Changelog since last Ubuntu version:

hippo-canvas (0.2.23-4.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * Fix implicit pointer conversion: patch python/hippo.override to
include hippo/hippo-canvas-test.h. Closes: bug#451395.
  * Correct maintainer email address in debian/control. Closes:
bug#479500.
  * Remove autogenerated config/hippo-canvas in clean target.

 -- Jonas Smedegaard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed, 07 May 2008 22:53:12 +0200

hippo-canvas (0.2.23-4) unstable; urgency=high

  * Fixes segfaults with newest python-cairo. Patch by Patrick Winnertz
(Closes: #472103)
  * Added cdbs simple-patchsys in debian/rules with patches/ dir.

-- Santiago Ruano Rincón [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri, 04 Apr 2008
23:22:34 +0200

hippo-canvas (0.2.23-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Fix broken installation caused by regression in NMU: python-central
0.6 not only change install location but also registers what gets
installed, so adjusting hardcoded cleanup path just makes
python-central break at install time. Instead do cleanup _before_
python-central is invoked (and use find to not rely on exact path).
By Jonas Smedegaard [EMAIL PROTECTED]. (Closes: #473277)
  * Changed Maintainer: to Debian Online Destkop Team

-- Santiago Ruano Rincón [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed, 02 Apr 2008

hippo-canvas (0.2.23-2.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * NMU.
  * Don't hardcode the location of the shared python files. Closes: #472051.

 -- Matthias Klose [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat, 29 Mar 2008 18:02:59 +

hippo-canvas (0.2.23-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Added hippo-canvas-1.pc in libhippocanvas-dev. (Closes: #452237)
  * debian/control:
- Added Section: python for python-hippocanvas
- Added Homepage: field.
