[Bug 209053] Re: KDE 4 Migration - GUI is rendered huge
Hi there. I've always had that problem myself and before KDE 4.0 I had always been able to fix it thanks to gdm/kdm config file (depending on the one I had on my laptop). Well this time it went all differently when installing Kubuntu Remix. Once installed, when the login screen appeared I switched to text mode (CTRL +ALT +, say, F5), and went looking for such a conf file as I was used to doing in older versions of (K)Ubuntu. I soon gave up. But just now I found the way to solve this in a forum. It not only solves the login screen High DPI fonts you are used to, but also the all-KDE4 dpi problem and all. I can't tell whether it is correct to solve this that way, but it works and seems to be a good work-around at least. Just go to your xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/ and change it, 1. At login screen, press CTRL+ALT+F5 (or another working one) 2. log in with your user account 3. then go to the proper directory using cd /etc/X11 4. then edit it as root using sudo pico xorg.conf 5. go down to the screen section and insert a line (which should be the last line between Section Screen and EndSection) 6. here is the line to add: Option DDC no 7. Leave using CTRL+X and pico asks you whether to save, answer yes, of course. 8. once back to the shell prompt, just reboot the computer usingsudo reboot 9. Enjoy! [Bug 2772] Re: [feisty] vlc key shortcuts doesnt work
The next VLC version has been in the making for a very long time, I don't see it as particularly likely that this VLC branch will stabilize and ship properly before Inteprid Ibex. And even when it does ship there might be people who wants to stay with the old version for just a little while longer until the odd bugs in the new version in ironed out. All in all, it sounds like a good idea to branch the current stable VLC into a special Ubuntu version which has the modified keys only. On the next release VLC can be synced anyway (not merged) because the new branch will have the keys fixed already. Also, it should be extremely easy to add the most common shortcut keys (like F and SPACE etc), probably a couple of lines of code at most. Being able to press F and SPACE would really contribute to the polished feel of my Ubuntu desktop. It's one of the few bugs that I actually run into on a regular basis (the other one being bug #21202 ). -- [feisty] vlc key shortcuts doesnt work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2772 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 225400] Re: web page - X server crash/blank, no display until reboot [Q965]
The problem seems not to occur without rotation. Disabling visualization appears to have no effect (the display still blanks). The machine is pingable after the display blanks--I suspect that it's still running, except for the X display being unusable. When I clicked on the link without rotation, a totem plugin started up, but I don't think the mp3 itself began playing, and I saw no graphics other than the minimal UI (this was prior to disabling visualization). I think it was probably just sitting there waiting for me to press the play button. So, it seems like visualiation is not the cause, but rather whatever basic X things the totem plugin does. (?) More background: Rotation on this display didn't work correctly until this version of Ubuntu. Previously it'd sort of work, but there was lots of screen crap and the server would crash after being used for a bit. Also, if I'm on a rotated display and I use the Screen Resolution widget to try to unrotate it, the display goes into a flashing unusable state until reboot. It does appear, though, that I can log out of a rotated display and into an unrotated display with no trouble. -- web page - X server crash/blank, no display until reboot [Q965] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/225400 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 207446] Re: [ndiswrapper] wpa_supplicant fails after upgrade to Hardy
I still have Gutsy 7.10, and am having this problem. * Compaq r4010us laptop * Broadcom 4306 * Using ndiswrapper with 'wext' in the command line * Linksys WRT54GS v1.0 Firmware v4.50.6 * Attempting WPA(1)-PSK with static IP * 'network-manager' and 'gnome-network-manager' uninstalled, as they were fouling up my manual IP settings; erasing them. I can connect fine with encryption disabled. Enabled, I have had successful connections twice, but it's not easy to get them and I have yet to nail down the procedure to get it, as the nature of this bug makes landing on the right sequence of steps difficult. The two times I did connect with WPA, I decided to 'play around a bit' and see exactly what the key to it was, and I permanently lost the connection until the next boot, but mind you that it will not connect at boot even though I'm using the rc.local script. I still have to play around with it to connect. So, apparently, once it goes down, only a reboot and more fiddling solves it. I have tried the following 'resets', to no avail: * /etc/init.d/networking restart * /etc/init.d/dbus restart I have tried ap_scan set to 0, 1 and 2. I have invoked wpa_supplicant in two combinations: 1) -Bw without -d or -dd 2) -w with -dd I will be playing with it more this week as I have time (and hair to pull), and I'll report what I find. -- [ndiswrapper] wpa_supplicant fails after upgrade to Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/207446 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 187918] Re: [Hardy] KDE4 logon failure: 'startkde: Could not start D-Bus. Check your installation.'
I've done a bit more troubleshooting, and narrowed the problem down some. I think it has to do with the order system services are started relative to PAM, or some permissions setting within PAM. Here's why: In startkde, there is a section that begins with: # D-Bus autolaunch is broken if test -z $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS ; then /etc/init.d/dbus start eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session` fi if qdbus /dev/null 2/dev/null; then : # ok else ... If I run the command inside the eval as a regular user (logged in and authenticated via ldap), it works fine. If I eval it and then run qdbus, that works fine too. If, however, I echo the output of those same commands when run from within startkde (by kdm-kde4), it appears that they're failing. They are run as the same user, too, which strikes me as extremely odd. Information that might be important: bind_policy soft - is set in ldap.conf. Appears to be important for user authentication by the ldap server. Also in ldap.conf, the following are set: nss_base_passwd ou=People,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one nss_base_shadow ou=People,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one nss_base_group ou=Groups,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one nss_base_aliases ou=Aliases,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one nss_base_netgroup ou=Netgroup,dc=cssb,dc=utexas,dc=edu?one nss_map_attribute rfc2307attribute mapped_attribute nss_map_objectclass rfc2307objectclass mapped_objectclass I haven't tried knocking out individual lines to see which are mission critical, but I suspect the first three at least are. There's also an automatically-added line at the end of ldap.conf, beginning with nss_initgroups_ignoreusers, which includes messagebus. /etc/pam.d/kdm-kde4 (note: NOT /etc/pam.d/kdm as the file seems to think it is) auth required pam_nologin.so auth required pam_env.so readenv=1 auth required pam_env.so readenv=1 envfile=/etc/default/locale auth sufficient pam_ldap.so # exactly the same results without this line @include common-auth session required pam_limits.so @include common-account @include common-password @include common-session The included files are unmodified. Note that my /home directory is mounted by nfs (based on ldap auth), and is on another machine. Gnome, kde3 both work fine (ran from kdm-kde4). [Bug 230877] [NEW] dbus inherits parent filedescriptors
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: dbus When running mplayer the dbus library forks out the dbus-launcher which inherits the filedescriptors of mplayer. If one of those filedescriptors accesses a video4linux or DVB device the filehandle will be kept open. [Bug 230876] [NEW] msword_filter should check available disk space before copying files to /tmp
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: tracker After unmounting a large truecrypt volume (file called test.doc) tracker starts msword_filter which copies the file to /tmp. The problem is, test.doc is a truecrypt volume of 20GB, and there are only 6GB free on /tmp. I dont know what truecrypt does to the file to cause tracker to re-index. A 'touch test.doc' doesn't cause the problem. msword_filter should check if there is enough free space available in /tmp. [Bug 228067] Re: lyx 1.5.3.1 crashes as soon as it starts
Finally, success. Using the source packages from Debian unstable (LyX 1.5.5-1), I was able to build an 8.04 package for 64-bit with Prevu, an automated backporting utility: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Prevu A side note, LyX 1.5.5-1 in Debian unstable was released yesterday (May 14), so it has not yet been synced with Intrepid (the previous version of LyX failed to build in Intrepid, but 1.5.5-1 should build successfully). As far as I have seen, the problems have gone. I have qt4.4 from hardy backports (it's not disabled), and no problems. I have built 64-bit packages which I can send to anyone who wants them (send me a private message to daradib on Ubuntu Forums). I don't know how to build 32-bit packages using Prevu on a 64-bit system, so you can make the package yourself by installing prevu (package in repositories), adding deb-src line for Debian Unstable, sudo apt-get update, and running the command prevu lyx. You could also probably just install the Debian unstable (Sid) binary package for LyX (without modification), but I have not tried that. -- lyx 1.5.3.1 crashes as soon as it starts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/228067 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 215245] Re: Yelp crashes when trying to open o help topic
Sebastien - I've just come back to this bug report because I've had a similar experience with another user who isn't getting a crash report with Apport (even though it is enabled). It turns out that Apport doesn't catch SIGABRT, which is what Yelp is terminating with here. I don't know if Apport is meant to catch this or not, so I asked question 33050 to try and clarify it. If it is a bug in Apport, I'll open a bug report as I can reproduce it without fail here. If this is the intended behaviour of Apport, then can we get Victor to submit a stacktrace with debug symbols in to this report if he can still reproduce the crash (using the guide at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash - the example is with yelp funnily enough) ** Changed in: yelp (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Incomplete -- Yelp crashes when trying to open o help topic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/215245 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This is ridiculous. The least you can do is leave the bug open until the help docs get updated. As it stands the old behavior is still documented but not available. This is sound of community feedback. [Bug 211157] Re: Pairing a bluetooth device hangs a computer
I just encountered this same kind of lockup today. I have tried 2 different phones in combination with 2 different bluetooth adapters. The lockup only occurs on one of the phones, the HTC Tilt - ATT 8925 (Win Mobile). The Sony Ericsson (Symbian) phone does not have this problem. When I initiate bonding from the desktop, no problems. Can connect and browse the device. When I initiate bonding from the HTC Tilt, the system immediately and complete freezes everything. I tried to catch an error message. I left open two terminal windows, one tailing /var/log/messages and the other tailing /var/log/dmesg and I initiated bonding from the HTC Tilt. It bonded then locked and there were no log messages issued. And when I reboot. There is no record of any errors that I can find. It doesn't matter what preferences or services I have enabled on the Bluetooth Applet (0.25) the result is the same. Using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16-generic, gnome 2.22.1 with all latest patches on Athlon machine with 512 MB RAM (non-descript e-machine). Bluetooth devices: no-name class 1 device and IOgear gbu221 (class 2). Phones: HTC Tilt - ATT 8925 (Win Mobile) - the problem phone and Sony Ericsson (Symbian) - the no problem phone. This is NOT a random lockup. Please test attachment. ** Attachment added: Problematic mpeg2ts file http://launchpadlibrarian.net/14547261/test.trp -- some mpeg-ts files don't play (freeze on prerolling fase) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/121351 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 194091] Re: Intel Wireless 4965AGN (iwl4965) network-manager doesn't work
Hello guys I have a similar problem with my Samsung q45( uname, dmesg and lspci attached ) : the iwl4965 works always fine from XP professional and from Ubuntu with many routers and SSID but at home it won't get the signal of my own router which is perfectly fine with other PCs. I thought it was because of the old USR9111 router in Gutsy but it was the same with Hardy and it is now the same with a new NETGEAR DG834PN : the iwl4965 works fine from XP with a driver dated back to 27th April 2007 11.1.0.100 but it won't work with Hardy. I've followed the https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.22/+bug/149214/comments/24 and tried the procedure with the drivers iwlwifi-4965-ucode-4.44 from version 14 to version 20 taken from the site http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?n=downloadsf=ucodep=iwlwifi no success !! I'm curious to go back t o the office tomorrow and see what will happen with the netgear there which was spot on immediately !! Anyone of you has got any idea ? It is so frustrating to use a cable with a Super Portable Laptop !! Thank you in advance Danny ( Florence Italy ) ** Attachment added: dd http://launchpadlibrarian.net/14547263/dd -- Intel Wireless 4965AGN (iwl4965) network-manager doesn't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194091 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
