[Bug 37388] Re: screensaver blanks out when using external prgram

2008-06-02 Thread bill
This same behavior happens in my Hardy 8.04 LTS system. This is a new
install. The screen will blank -- oddly often during while running the
audio application sweep, although whether there is a connection, or
whether I am just using this program often I cannot tell. Often, but not
always, I can type (blindly) ctrl-alt-del and choose l which logs me
out of icewm (Ice Window Manger) and takes me back to the Ubuntu
splash/login screen. I can then log back in.

[Bug 236373] Re: '/etc/init.d/nagios2 reload' causes nagios to exit (sends SIGTERM not SIGHUP)

2008-06-02 Thread Albert Damen
Please note this is actually a bug in lsb, which doesn't properly handle
signals passed to killproc.
This has been fixed in Debian (lsb 3.2-12), so a merge of lsb will fix this in
Intrepid.
See bug 228460.

I suggest that this become a different bug -- I thought I had fixed this

I would like to know more about your system. Do you know if you are
suing a framebuffer console? What is your BIOS?

Can you provide the versions of your related packages:

  dpkg -l xserver-xorg-video-geode xserver-xorg-video-amd xserver-xorg-

If possible could you provide the X.*.log file that was generated while
the freeze to console occurred?

[Bug 235495] Re: unmounted volumes still show in nautilus tree

2008-06-02 Thread stephenb
In my case, it looks like I was jumping the gun. My apologies.

It's still true that my iPod icon does not change when the iPod is
unmounted. However, the mounting and unmounting of other devices
(camera, USB) is working correctly.

So, I'm not really getting what is described here. None of my device
occurrences multiply, and my iPod alone just stays the same in the
nautilus tree.

[Bug 236784] [NEW] Hibernation does not work properly

2008-06-02 Thread Nicholas
Public bug reported:

In Windows, the Hibernation function saves the current state of the
computer onto the hard drive and then shuts down the computer. In
Ubuntu, however, it works much like Suspend, except the fan keeps
rotating at its normal speed and you cannot get back without the
password. This doesn't correspond to the description of that function in

[Bug 148097] Re: No HDMI audio with ALC883 chipset

2008-06-02 Thread Benoit Bégin
Possible solution:

I used to make work my HDMI audio by doing this:

Open the mixer ans select Realtek ALC833 (OSS Mixer) as the device.
Edit / Preferences. Check Digital-1 and select Close.
In the Recording tab, ajust the volume of the Digital-1 to the preferred level.

Your HDMI audio should now work. My understanding is that the SPDIF
digital output is the one that's used under HDMI, but this output gets
classified in the recording / input class (bug?).

[Bug 210637] Re: sata_nv regression, reboots system

2008-06-02 Thread Colin King
SRU justification:

Impact: sata_nv regression, reboots system. Since 2.6.23 somewhere,
sata_nv has gained improved exception handling, but there is a serious
regression that causes a system reboot.

Testcase: run # hdparm -W 0 /dev/sda ; hdparm -W 0 /dev/sdb. On Gutsy,
this gives periodic kernel messages, but on Hardy it fails terribly. XFS
filesystem shutdown due to error, and most times system reboots without
any messages to serial console.

Patch in my PPA tested and verified
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/210637/comments/16

[Bug 204578] Re: 2.6.24.12 won't boot with em28xx device

2008-06-02 Thread jm_maclaren
what I did and you may have luck with it to is
1. install a clean v4l via
cd /usr/src;sudo su; hg clone http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb and then a make and
make install
or by reinstalling that package from ubuntu. I wisey backed up the lib/modules
path so I could rewrite the files if I had a problem
and then
2. did you install the em288-new that matched your kernel using dpkg -i file
3. next did you try reboot.

I had to reboot with the device unplugged and then plugged it in to get it to
work (pinnacle usb hdtv 800e)
It works fine under hardy (mythbuntu 8.04)

[Bug 115637] Re: headphones on laptop don't mute laptop speakers on Toshiba A120-237

2008-06-02 Thread Colin82
I have a Satellite A135-S4427 running 8.04 Hardy.
Got the headphones working by adding:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

Internal speakers still do not mute when headphones are plugged in though.
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack does the same at model=auto, as does
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=auto

Anyone found a fix to this yet?

[Bug 225484] Re: Hardy hangs while using the pc

2008-06-02 Thread Adrian
Hi everyone. I have the same problem with my Hardy on a Presario F562LA,
it just freeze completely after a random amount of time. For me, I have
notice that happens mostly when browsing the web in firefox. I tryed
removing the Nvidia driver I got with ENVY, and it seems to be working
normally again. It comes to my attention that both laptops have the
Nvidia GeForce 6100. Could there be any relationship with this driver?
Which driver are you using xdevent? Have you tried working with generics
video drivers just for the test? Also, do you get the BIOS BUG
#81[XX] error on startup?

Thanks, let me know what info can I post to contribute.

[Bug 236800] [NEW] Podcast feed is not added.

2008-06-02 Thread Keith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Ubuntu 8.04
rhythmbox Installed: 0.11.5-0ubuntu6
libtotem-plparser10: Installed: 2.22.3-0ubuntu2

This seems to be exactly like Bug# 202982, but that claims to be
resolved.

I tried to add the following podcast feed:
http://www.podshow.com/feeds/noagenda.xml
I expected a new feed to be added or an error telling me it was not added for
some reason. Neither happened, no new feed, no error, no crash report.

Running Rhythmbox in debug mode produced the same output as described in
Bug# 202982.

Thanks!

[Bug 231717] Re: Some tray icons cannot be moved individually

2008-06-02 Thread Schalken
Tray icons can't be moved around. Only the notification area applet,
which the tray icons sit inside of, can be moved with the handle to the
left of the icons, and this will move the applet and all its containing
icons as one unit as you describe. The volume control icon, if that's
what you're comparing to, won't move with them, because that is actually
a panel applet in and of itself. Note that tracker-applet and nm-applet
are not actual panel applets, they are just tray icons that sit in the
notification area (which is an applet).

Sorry if I've missed the point of this bug report entirely.

[Bug 140051] Re: xf86-video-amd: fails to autoconfigure

2008-06-02 Thread Billy
Oh, i can pass the following informations. About framebuffer: I don't

when splash is enabled. How can i provide the BIOS information?

geode: No information
amd: 2.7.7.8-0ubuntu1
core: 2:1.4.1~git20080131-1ubuntu1

Newer versions of xserver-xorg-video-amd don't work on my system (last one
tested 2.9.0-1ubuntu3).
My system doesn't crash, it just fades and then nothing happens. I can switch
back to the graphical console, but this one is really annoying, especially
because the fading happens when the system is starting and when i try to switch
to the text console and it takes about 20-25 seconds.

Any more information i can provide?

Thanks

However I have had one other user complain of this behavior and it was due to a

[Bug 196135] Re: Timidity shouldn't depend on freepats

2008-06-02 Thread Markus Schulz
But we could also have two alphabets (true type font files) in English;
one with all 26 letters and one without, lets say, 5 letters. By default
we install only the 21 letter alphabet. Now we save some HD space. Most
intelligent people will still be able to guess most of the text files
they read. But it is not really useful, because it will not show the
text like the author intended... If you want to compete with Windows you
should be able to play a midi file right out of the box and in the same
quality. But at lest play the files with all sounds. Maybe freepats
needs some files form fluid to make it complete?

choices.

[Bug 174539] Re: bzr-builddeb requires debian/dirs exist

2008-06-02 Thread James Westby
Hi,

I saw this the other day, it's in no way specific to debian/dirs.

The problem is when a versioned file goes missing from the working
tree. I'm not sure exactly what is at fault here, but the problem
is the the working tree still reports it as present, but then refuses
to provide the contents of the file. It's possibly a bug in bzrlib,
but I want to do some more investigation first.

I think the way that I worked around this problem was

bzr commit -m 'dummy' bzr uncommit

Thanks,

James

[Bug 32963] Re: totem overrides XV_CONSTRAST/XV_SATURATION to wrong default value (Xv movies on i810/i945 have horrible colour/gamma/contrast)

2008-06-02 Thread GFree
Since nothing seems to work for me as far as driver replacements go,
I've developed my own analysis and workaround for the problem, which
I'll share here in case people find it useful:

OK, now according to xvattr, my default values for brightness, contrast
and saturation are 0, 64 and 128 respectively. I do not use Totem, I
hate the GUI, but I do like using SMPlayer for most videos and VLC for
DVD playback. There are two problems though:

* The default values above are actually a little too high, even though they
look like sensible defaults. For some reason, even after verifying the defaults
are not being modified in something like VLC (which doesn't move them around at
all), blacks are not entirely black and hence everything's slightly too bright.
* SMPlayer, unlike regular MPlayer, does like to modify the color values and
screws things up entirely.

Hence, there are two tasks:

* To change the default values to something sensible so that VLC can show
blacks as proper blacks and hence everything looks good.
* To stop SMPlayer from fuxxoring with the values itself.

After experimentation, I discovered that the issue of blacks could be
fixed if XV_BRIGHTNESS was reduced to about -12, but everything else
looked bright enough to be reasonable. I also discovered that if I ran
if I ran MPlayer with the following parameters:

-contrast -49 -brightness -9 -saturation -75

This would adjust all the balances to such that things would look fine.
To stop SMPlayer from going screwey, I went to the advanced section of
the options menu, put these parameters in the additional parameters
section, and so SMplayer worked beautifully. Also, VLC would show nice
blacks and colors if I ran SMPlayer at least once before, since it would
adjust the brightness as part of the new settings I gave it.

So yeah, that's what I did. A bit of a shame that an open-source driver
has this bug which cannot seem to be fixed and yet closed-source binary
blobs from NVIDIA work just fine, but there you go. Hope that's useful
to someone. :)
