The problem seems to be solved now. I got a message from another program telling me to run sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get install -f. This has fixed it. But since the update manager is supposed to be doing basically the same as these commands, I don't quite understand why that application didn't fix the problem by itself. So I'm leaving the report open for right now, just in case this shows that something needs to be fixed about the update manager. My problem was not due to Ubuntu. It was a hardware issue caused erratic behaviour. My Acer Aspire 5720 is now dual booting with Vista and after the repair made by Acer I don't have a problem as often as before. I find that when the battery is fully charged the network card is recognised but does not work - with either operating system - but if I run off the battery for 5 minutes and then reboot that both operating systems deal with the network device again. I downloaded 8.10 Alpha 6 today so that I could provide feedback as to how it works on the notebook. After about 3 hours I've given up trying to get it running in non-install mode on the notebook. I downloaded the AMD 64 bit version and have tried that on my desktop machine and like what I see. I burnt the 32 bit version for the notebook at 4X rather than the maximum speed of 52X and verified it. I also let the Ubuntu install check the CD and it was 100% OK. On the notebook I'm opting for running off the CD. The wireless network indicator light comes on as does the blue tooth light. Under 8.04 the wireless network light was not turned on even though wireless networking was enabled. The run from CD process (notebook) goes through the usual progress bar stuff, brings up the X mouse cursor and the beige background then the wait cursor. The wait cursor is static (ie no rotation effect). It is now over 1/2 hour since this has been the case on the Acer notebook and will probably be the case until hell freezes over or the power fails and the battery dies. Hello Leann, Sorry I cannot confirm this exactly, since I am now using the box in which I encountered the problem, for 'real work'. As I mentioned, I overcame the installation problem by adding the magic 'all_generic_ide' option to the boot line. But yesterday, I did try installing the fresh Xubuntu-8.10-alpha-6 on a machine (of some kid I teach in school) that was brought to my home. I got similar problems, on two burned images. They were burned by the following commands: cdrecord dev=/dev/scd0 -v -data intrepid-desktop-i386.iso wodim -v speed=8 -data intrepid-desktop-i386.iso (The downloaded iso-images are fine, I verified the md5sum) But this time, even the magic 'all_generic_ide' did not help, and I could not get to neither the live-session, nor pass the CD-verification step. I ended up, installing the good-old Xubuntu-7.10. My (:male:) intuition tells me, that - with recent Ubuntu installation kernels, there are problems when using old CD/DVD drives, or other dependent firmware in the box. The bug occured to me quite some time ago and I very rarely use Krita. It might have already been fixed. Of course, I don't have the problematic files anymore. A bit more information (1) the bug happens whenever I resume and am unconnected to the dock. E.g. if I suspend unconnected and resume unconnected, it happens. (2) The system is not completely unresponsive. Sometimes, if I bash enough of the Fn keys, it eventually resumes properly - in particular, if I hit the Sleep key combination. (3) Also, the bug is intermittent. Hi, I'm currently on Intrepid i386 w/the 177.70 drivers, and I also experience this issue while using compiz. The only way I have been able to eliminate the problem was to: a) Add the following to the Device section of your xorg.conf: Option BackingStore false b) Set the initial pixmap placement (IPP) to the following: nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 With this configuration, the window decoration never corrupts; unfortunately, text input boxes seem to sporadically corrupt (it's happening as I type this very instant).
