[Bug 224845] Re: With dual monitors (TwinView), maximized windows start up in wrong screen

2008-12-14 Thread themuddler
Experiencing the same as revgazza above with Intrepid 8.10. Note I'm
still using version 173 of the Nvidia driver due to a problem with
screen resolution on xscreen 1 with the new driver. A summary of the
behaviour I'm experiencing:

Application launched from top panel in xscreen 1 opens in xscreen 0 - bad
Application launched by association with a file-type in nautilus does the same
- bad
Launching using the console or Alt-F2 on screen 1 does open the app on screen 1
- good

Nautilus started from places menu starts on wrong screen - bad
Nautilus started from link on desktop starts on correct screen - good

VLC and Flash fullscreen mode does stay on the correct screen - good

[Bug 307843] [NEW] serial coms do not work when exec from rc.local or from session startup

2008-12-14 Thread SoonSoon
Public bug reported:

currently using 8.04 ubuntu, with gcc,g++ latest version

I have a dummy c program sending out serial string out to a serial port. i.e.
/dev/ttyS0
when this application is exec from the terminal in side ubuntu, every works ok.
but when i try to run it on boot up, i.e. place a command or script in rc.local
or using as a startup application in session. the application do not run. I
have used absolute command to call the scrpt and application.

I realise that as long as my application contain serial coms, it will
have this problem.

I have tried the same set up before and it work on a installation in
7.04, g++-4.1

[Bug 271070] Re: Aperture beyond 4GB. Ignoring. message when booting

2008-12-14 Thread melondrift
Well, I've asked permission to print my brother's specs and am waiting
for a reply, but here is what I've done. I've re-installed Intrepid
again, and have taken notes the whole way.

First off, the JJ.zip file attached has a bunch of entries. Most of
them have this same command set:

uname -a
dmesg
sudo lspci -vvnn

Break--
My computer specs are: AMD Phenom 9500 quad-core processor that runs at 2.2Ghz
on a MCP61PM-GM AM2 Motherboard made by ECS, 3GB RAM that is rated 667Mhz, a
500GB SATA II hard drive, it has NVidia 6150 onboard video GPU clocked at
400Mhz however I have installed an NVidia 7600GS GO PCIe x16 card with a GPU
clocked at 560 Mhz and 512MB RAM clocked at 400Mhz, and it has a generic DVD RW
w/ LabelFlash. If more detail is needed, I'll get it if I can.
End Break--

Now, back to the zipped text files attached. The first one I put
together is called myhardwareishardy.txt, and that one gives the run
down on the Hardy installation.

The second file is myhardwareisintrepidpreupdate.txt which was written
right after the re-boot which was done right after the Intrepid
installation, and before I did any updates.

The third file is myhardwareisintrepidpostupdate.txt which was written
right after the reboot from the update.

After rebooting from the first update, I lost internet connection. I
did some simple checking to make sure the LAN was up (it was). I tried
connecting a USB/Ethernet Device but still no connection. I then
powered completely down (hard boot, not soft) then brought the system
back up with the USB Device still attached. When the system came up,
the KNetworkManager icon was missing and the USB Device was working (not
the onboard Ethernet).

I installed the NVidia Driver 177.xx and did a reboot. The onboard
Ethernet started working again, so I removed the USB Device, still no
KNetworManager Icon.

The fourth file is KMixcrashNVidiaInstall.txt and it was taken from a
crash report window that came up during the NVidia Driver install. The
KMix manager was still operational and the startup/shutdown audio clips
never failed. (Funny thing about that, every time I boot up the intro
seems to be snubbed, does that happen to anybody else?)

I installed the KDE Official suite then did a reboot.

The KNetworkManager Icon has come back. I installed the repository for
Medibuntu, and installed Firefox with its counterparts and the KUbuntu
Extras.

I grabbed Adobe Flash 10 but did not yet install. I rebooted first to
make sure the prior two groups had made everything complete.

After rebooting, the GUI froze, so I got a reading and the fifth file is
called guifreeze.txt. I then finished the Adobe install from prompt
and rebooted again to clean the slate (and get the GUI back). After
thought, perhaps I should have tried using the /etc/init.d/kdm stop and
start to see what would happen.

After rebooting, I went to an online game that I would like to see
working properly, RuneScape, and sure enough, I have to keep wiggling
the mouse over the frame to keep it running. It's like having a hand
crank for your monitor, lol.

After having tried the game, I made the last file,
myhardwareisintrepidwhendone.txt.

I didn't lose the Desktop panel this round, but some of the other icons
in the bottom panel did lose part or all of their picture (some were
partially overlapped as well).

Wholly Smokes, I think I've written a novel. Oh well, I hope this helps the
developers in looking for bugs to eradicate. If there is any more you would
like me to do, let me know. Turn circles, sit on my hands, hire a technician
(don't think so), get some sleep ( Ooh, that one sounds good!! ). Good night,
and good luck.

Melondrift 8-)

P.S. My humor goes somewhat awry when I've been awake this long.

Re: [Bug 269123] Re: stkwebcam kernel-modul dont work in intrepid

2008-12-14 Thread Athanasios Lefteris
Logs attached as requested (with no webcam module loaded).

Then with:

$ sudo modprobe stkwebcam

tail of dmesg:

[ 539.088995] Linux video capture interface: v2.00
[ 539.109178] usbcore: registered new interface driver stkwebcam

$ lsmod | grep stk

videodev 46720 2 stkwebcam,compat_ioctl32
usbcore 175376 5 stkwebcam,usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd

Now if I try to start camorama:

$ camorama -D
VIDIOCGCAP -- could not get camera capabilities, exiting.

Cheese doesn't get any video (No camera found). Ekiga also desn't get
any video (no device found with plugin V4L). Skype also can't use the
camera.

If I then unload the stkwebcam and load ver. 1.4 of the stk11xx, that
I have compiled from the sources at
http://syntekdriver.sourceforge.net :

$ sudo rmmod stkwebcam
$ sudo insmod ./stk11xx.ko

dmesg output:

[ 1591.307058] usbcore: deregistering interface driver stkwebcam
[ 1826.083489] stk11xx: Syntek USB2.0 webcam driver startup

[ 1826.273515] usbcore: registered new interface driver usb_stk11xx_driver
[ 1826.273522] stk11xx: v1.3.1 : Syntek USB Video Camera

With this module, camorama has video from the webcam. Ekiga also works
with the stk11xx module. So this is an improvement over the stkwebcam
module :)

But not all is good :( Cheece is not working again (No camera found)
and Skype detects the webcam, but when testing the webcam
functionality from the app settings, I only get a black screen.

I would be very interested if anyone else had better luck..

2008-12-14 Thread Johnathon
Jordan Erickson wrote:

Again, Really _awesome_ security policy guys!
Again, I'd expect that tactic from MS Windows, not from Ubuntu.

I know you guys are manically busy working on new features, I know back-
porting security fixes is a right PITA, slow, boring, and what you
*don't* want to be spending time on. But by not patching it, you're
letting people's data swing free in the breeze, with a documented
problem available on the net for exploitation.

How can I make you take what's happened here seriously? Post this on my
blog, and by extension the Ubuntu UK planet? Post on the general Ubuntu
mailing lists? Post any exploits that I help confirm later on cracker forums?

One thing is for sure, sarcastic and rude remarks at the people who work
their asses off to fix this stuff sure isn't a very good method to
 getting it fixed.

Wow. What arrogance. IANAP either, probably have less experience than
you in the field - but I sure now how to use a bit of elbow grease
instead of spinning your wheels for everyone to hear to get things
 accomplished.

Jordan, That was me trying my best NOT to be rude, and understanding.
I've DONE an SRU patch, and I KNOW how much boring, hard work it is.

I WASN'T saying they're not doing any work, I'm saying that this
security bug slipped through the gaps.

If I COULD learn this language to fix it, I would, but I am a trainee
sysadmin / tech support guy, not a programmer, for a good reason. Take
note of my comment on my technical ability, please.

[Bug 289669] Re: gnome-panel needs pointer or click to hide

2008-12-14 Thread Martin Mai
I can not confirm this for launchers, but for preferences menus:
1) Tell gnome-panel to auto-hide
2) Right click on the clock applet
3) Choose Preferences
4) Move the mouse away from the panel
- The panel does not auto-hide, you have to hover and un-hover it again.

Btw: I have compiz deaktivated so this seems not to be a compiz bug

Thank you.

Re: [Bug 269904] Re: Screen refresh problems with nvidia on intrepid

2008-12-14 Thread superruzafa
I have no error since I installed the last driver from Nvidia's ftp. It's
seems the official page shows up to 177.xx version but the ftp stores the
180.16 version.

Anyway I have the same bugs only when I use a second screen from my
laptop.

My last comment refers to the fix released state as shown above. Where
 is the supposed fix?

Still encountering the problem (firefox scrolling refreshing with compiz
enabled) with intrepid and latest 177er nvidia driver
(177.82-0ubuntu0.1). Seems to be twin-view specific here (thinkpad
t61with nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M).

[Bug 282683] Re: [intrepid] pidgin doesn't save new contacts into the remote server (msn)

2008-12-14 Thread Matias
Hi Everyone,

I was able to get rid of this quite annoying problem by following the
workaround provided on the Pidgin developer website (
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Protocol%20Specific%20Questions#WhydoIkeepgettingaBuddyListSynchronizationerror
):

In order to fix this, you need to login to your account via Hotmail or
similar (not the web messenger), go to your address book, edit the
contact that matches, and check the box for Use this address with
Windows Live Messenger.

More discussion on this bug can be found in Pidgin ticket #6808:

Thank you for reporting this.
To me it does not seem to be a bug, because it worked under Hardy before and
does not today.

I would guess that some part of your hardware broke.
Do you use an USB webcam?
Could you try to boot without it?

[Bug 219934] Re: open/save window problem in hardy

2008-12-14 Thread Michael Behman
Well...As far as i understand, anything that uses Gnome's open/save,
firefox-mplayer...a lot of other things, but with somethings like amsn or qucs
( i think) they work just fine cause they have their own open/save dialog boxes.
Anyway, i also noticed that if I run the program as root from the terminal, it
doesn't have this problem so my guesses are that for my user it's looking for
some directory that is not there or something like that.
I tried to find where it saves the place it first looks in by default by I
couldn't find such a thing.
please correct me if my guesses don't make sense.

[Bug 307751] Re: support comicbook formats: cb7, cba, cbt...

2008-12-14 Thread David Prieto
Hi,

I am using Evince 2.24-1-1ubuntu2 on Jaunty. I just uncompressed a .cbr
file and re-compressed the resulting folder to a .7z file, which I then
renamed to .cb7, but Evince can't open it. It says it does not support
this unknown file type (application/octet-stream).

As for using brainstorm or a specification, I always thought those were
for system-wide issues. Being specific to one package (evince), I
thought this was the best place to do it.

[Bug 307689] Re: file in cd not opening

2008-12-14 Thread Tom
Hmmm, can you try another cd/dvd drive?

I searched in the Synaptic Package manager for Nokia and found a number
of native linux apps that work for a whole range of different handsets
so that you wouldn't have to struggle with exporting/importing data as
you change handsets over the years.

Another way might be to try downloading the Nokia Suite from their
website? A google search gave me a few sites worth try and the download
was only 31.7Mb so it'd be fairly quick. I tried

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Mobile-Phone-Tools/Nokia/Nokia-PC-
Suite.shtml

but there was also

http://www.downloadpipe.com/drivers/review-Nokia-6125-USB-
OBEX-1127190.html

As it turned out the Nokia (Europe) site was too slow and heavy for me,
i couldn't be bothered to wait for its animations to appear.

Anyway, good luck with trying those 3 different routes. I tend to
prefer native linux apps rather than running stuff through
Wine/DosBox/whatever, otherwise i just don't feel like i really have the
freedom i'm aiming for. Anyway, each to their own - good luck and have
fun :)

[Bug 307689] Re: file in cd not opening

2008-12-14 Thread Tom
I have 2 dvd drives, the one that's slightly older also happens to be a
slightly less reliable brand but was a lot cheaper when i bought it.
Its great mostly but occasionally has a bit of trouble.

I find that whichever drive has trouble reading something usually the
other one can cope with it. i tend to use my glasses cleaner cloth to
clean the bottom of a dvd that wont read although Rob had one that was
so scratched that he used a sanding-machine to smooth it down!! It
worked but i definitely wouldn't recommend it!!

lol

Good luck and have fun :)

I'm also having issues w/this behavior. My scripts count on gksudo exit code to

Does anyone know about any workarounds/gksudo replacements?

[Bug 307786] Re: Synaptic crashes and will not boot after

2008-12-14 Thread Tom
ok. 2 different ways immediately spring to mind.

1st way.
  Open a terminal window
Apps - Accessories - Terminal (as you know)
  type in su
for super-user - this gives you 'root privileges'
  enter the root password,
if you can't remember this use the 2nd way
now type in dpkg --configure -a

2nd way
  Open a terminal window
Apps - Accessories - Terminal (as you know)
type in sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo cheats your way into running a command as
though you were the superuser, it turns a blind eye to
the fact that you arent. It's good for one-off commands
such as the one given. Also it means you don't need the
root password (at least not in Ubuntu but some other
 distros would require it.)
  enter your user password

I haven't got a clue what dpkg --configure -a did when i tested it on my
machine, i checked through which repositories it looks up but couldn't
see any change. I guess i should have looked first ;)

[Bug 307740] Re: oowriter crashes with error - missing word count in dictionary file

2008-12-14 Thread sergio.callegari
I am experiencing the same.

But apparently intrepid is not officially supporting openoffice 3, not
even through backports: the package giving errors to us is a personal
package among the personal package archives.

As a workaround, Sun's official openoffice from www.openoffice.org seem to work.
Not all languages have deb available, but rpms translated with alien seem to
install fine.

[Bug 307851] [NEW] Update manager shows invalid value in last updated field if failed to get package list

2008-12-14 Thread rafal cieslak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I know the title doesn't explain this bug clearly, I'll give an example:

I start update-manager to update my system.
It says: System was last updated three days ago. (or somewhat like this, I use
Polish translation)
I click Check for updates.
Some strange errors appear (it really doesn't matter what errors) and it fails
to get information about available updates.
Now it says: System was last updated less than hour ago
What??? It was last updated three days ago, as it failed to check for updates...

I use Ubuntu 8.10, update-manager in version 1:0.93.34.

[Bug 32921] Re: battery monitor is red even when I have over 30% battery left

2008-12-14 Thread Matthew East
This bug is still present in Ubuntu 8.10. The icons for gnome-power-
manager are still extremely poor and don't reflect the actual state of
the battery.

In the attached screenshot the icon seems to indicate that I am very low
on battery and have around 20%, in fact I have 49.6% battery left,
nearly two hours.

Has a policy decision been taken to keep these icons despite all the
comments in this bug report?

[Bug 307824] Re: imap sync performance regression in intrepid

2008-12-14 Thread Mads Chr. Olesen
Initial observations:
First start of evolution after installing ppa packages failed, as in the sync
was taking forever (this also happened before, so I'm not sure its a
regression), so I killed all evolution processes

Second start, sync seems faster than usual.

I will continue testing in the next few days.
