[Bug 339847] Re: system-config-printer notification patch should auto-detect capabilities of notification daemon, so that it can get upstreamized

2009-03-16 Thread Till Kamppeter
Tim, what do you think about making the following notification behavior
the upstream default in system-config-printer?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotifyOSD#system-config-printer

We do away with notification bubbles in general and instead, we do the
following:

* When a printer is added successfully using a matching printer driver, a
“Printer added” notification bubble appears containing the text “`%s' is ready
for printing.” and a “Configure” button. Instead, the Properties window for
that printer should open unfocused directly.
* When a printer is added successfully using a non-matching printer driver, a
“Printer added” notification bubble appears containing the text “%s' has been
added, using the %s' driver.” and a “Find driver” button.
(system-config-printer 1.1 will also include a “Print test page” button.)
Instead, the Properties window for that printer should open unfocused.
* When you try to view jobs on a printer that requires authentication, an
“Authentication required” notification bubble appears containing the text “Job
requires authentication to proceed” and an “Authenticate” button that brings up
an alert box saying “Authentication required for printing document `%s' (job
%d)”. The notification bubble should be abolished, and the alert box should be
invoked directly instead.
* When a print job gets stuck for some reason, a notification bubble appears
containing text “There was a problem processing the document” or similar,
containing no buttons but staying open until it is clicked. This should be
converted to an error alert box with an “OK” button.

ken, pitti, Matthew, if Tim does not agree to make this behavior
default, we need to have both this new and the old behavior available in
the upstream code. By default, the new behavior should be used in the
case that the notification facility is not supporting actions and the
old behavior otherwise. In addition, a ./configure option should also
allow to force the old or the new behavior.

[Bug 343446] Re: Please update glibc-doc to 2.9 manual

2009-03-16 Thread Reuben Thomas
Just in case it's still not clear: the manual that originally shipped
with glibc 2.9 was for 2.8. The manual has only just been updated. So
whatever the version on the glibc-doc package, the manual is out of
date, and it would be nice to have it updated to the current manual,
which has only just been released.

[Bug 337748] Re: [jaunty] ”Incomplete La nguage Support” message not shown anymore after in stallation

2009-03-16 Thread Timo Jyrinki
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: ubiquity

Incomplete Language Support message, available (with translations) in
  language-selector package (/usr/share/language-support/incomplete-
language-support-gnome.note), does not get shown after installation
anymore even if it would be needed. Installed a fresh Jaunty from
  20090303.1 daily-live, without network connection.

  To reproduce:
  1. Use eg. VirtualBox, but with disabled network connection, to install
Ubuntu in non-English language (I chose Finnish) so that language support will
be incomplete after installation
  2. After installation, enable network connection again and boot into Ubuntu

  Expected result:
After staring at the cryptic (English) desktop for a while, a light bulb
should appear (as in Ubuntu 8.10) telling that language support is incomplete.
The text should be in in the installation language. From the dialog one can
choose to go to language-selector which (now in jaunty!) correctly guides you
through installing the complete language support, first refreshing repositories
if needed.

  Actual result:
You keep staring the desktop, nothing happens/appears.
+
+ Tested: 20090303.1 daily-live, 20090316 daily-live

[Bug 337926] Re: vino: mouse cursor stays in upper left corner

2009-03-16 Thread mcnicholls
I have similar problem that i think may be related.

I can move the mouse pointer, but the local and remote pointers are
offset from each other. As i move my local mouse pointer off the bottom
of the vnc window, the remote pointer is still about 1/6th up the
screen.

I am on an Asus 901 with Jaunty Alpha running the same version of the
package as the original reporter.

Not sure if they are related. I have tried it using UltraVNC viewer
1.0.2 and TightVNC viewer 1.3.10 on WindowsXP.

Also noticed in the Xorg log posted that X is using the Synaptics mouse
driver. I am pretty sure mine is as well. Could there be an issue here?
(No idea how vino interacts with X so don't know if it is relevant).

[Bug 337627] Re: Killswitch position detected as active indipendent from actual state after resume

2009-03-16 Thread Sandro Mani
Some updates: the state is now not explicitly disabled, but someway
inbetween. Specifically, NetworkManager does not show the state as
disabled, but the wireless led is inactive and no wireless networks are
detected. Usually simply to toggle the Enable Wireless option in the
NetworkManager context menu solved the problem (i.e. wireless get's
activated), though some times the kernel panics on that operation.

2009-03-16 Thread Tuomas Aavikko
Brian Curtis wrote 13 hours ago:
Sebastien: this may be more linked to Bug #343254

Yes, it's related to that, but large logfiles shouldn't affect gnome-
system-log like the way it is now affecting.

Nullified logs via echo |sudo tee
/var/log/{user.log,user.log.0,syslog,syslog.0}
And it is working without a glitch.

[Bug 334101] Re: FFe: Xv and EXA not supported on R6xx/R7xx chipsets

2009-03-16 Thread Yves Glodt
Hmm :-) Until 3 days ago I used intrepid on my Vaio FW21E, with the
radeon driver, and it did not feel sluggish at all.

Although I could not enable KDE's desktop effects, overall drawing
performance seemed very good.

In jaunty, X uses more CPU and painting is much slower, in comparison. I
stopped using the fglrx driver a while ago since it causes too many
wakeups, and KDE 2D drawing performance was awful.

[Bug 332120] Re: jaunty - boost (1.34) to boost1.35 transitional dummy packages

2009-03-16 Thread Martin Pitt
What's the rationale for this? Packages which are built against 1.34
need to get their dependencies changed and rebuilt against 1.35. Mere
transitional packages are confusing, and wrong in my opinion.

[Bug 343548] [NEW] Lyx 1.6.2 released - please update repository

2009-03-16 Thread Johannes Hessellund
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lyx

New bugfix release of Lyx.

This fixes dataloss and various crashes, please update the repositories to the
current version.
Should be in Jaunty, and Hardy (and Intrepid?) backports.

From Lyx.org: http://www.lyx.org/News

We are pleased to announce the release of LyX 1.6.2. This is the second
maintenance release in the 1.6.x series. The release fixes a large
number of major and critical bugs that were reported by users of LyX
1.6.0 and 1.6.1. Most notably, three bugs that might lead to dataloss
were detected and resolved. Furthermore, a number of crashes, file
conversion and LaTeX output problems are fixed. As a bonus, the
performance of the application has been improved, and the release also
introduces some new features and user interface improvements.

All users of LyX 1.6.0 and 1.6.1 are urged to upgrade to this version.

[Bug 335767] Re: Jaunty Alpha 5: Usb stick (flash drive) does not pop up on the Gnome desktop

2009-03-16 Thread Oliver Grawert
that a device you want to use needs to be formatted with any kind of
filesystem should be clear indeed ...

the important part is that the device needs to be *partitioned* ...

some windows applications format usb keys directly without creating a
partition table, if your device shows up as /dev/sda instead of
/dev/sdaX (where X is a number) in the output of dmesg after plugging it
in, then it has no partition table. i would recommend using something
like gparted to partition and format such an usb key.

A workaround for this problem is to append the lines:

These are the domain servers from the openDNS free dns servers

[Bug 97722] Re: Windows dual-boot can corrupt system clock even if time servers are enabled

2009-03-16 Thread Robert Wall
trollord: set UTC=no in /etc/default/rcS. This setting will make
Ubuntu read and write to the hardware clock in localtime, rather than
UTC. Windows does the same by default, and thus you won't have problems
with them fighting over the clock's timezone. This is the default (in
Intrepid and Jaunty, anyway) for Ubuntu installations if Windows was
installed first.

David Nemeskey: Ticking Set date and time manually turns off NTP, so
no, it wouldn't check the time servers on startup. If Kubuntu was not
detecting your time zone change, then it's likely that your timezone
wasn't set correctly, because tzdata contains information on time zone
changes and is applied in (K)Ubuntu.

Marking this report as invalid; Windows using the hardware clock
differently from Ubuntu, Linux, and most other operating systems, is not
really something we can fix.

[Bug 335596] Re: DVD install takes forever compared to the CD install during the step that it's calculating packages to remove, causing pain for OEM

2009-03-16 Thread Colin Watson
Glad to hear it. Make sure to add 'ubiquity ubiquity/keep-installed
string icedtea6-plugin openoffice.org' to your preseeding too (unless
you already have something with the same effect); this will be the
default for any images built from now on (I just deployed that change on
cdimage) but wasn't in Alpha 6. I'd expect it to make a bit of a dent.

Are you suggesting that to have my Ubuntu laptop to connect to my

If you need to access your Windows PCs across the network for services other
than Windows filesharing, there are a number of options available.

- configure your Windows machines to use zeroconf, which is supported by
default in both MacOS X and Ubuntu, and access your Windows machines using
  the convention name.local.
- configure a DNS server on your local network
- configure nss_wins on your Ubuntu system.

The first of these is the only one I can really recommend; the second option
is obviously a lot of work to maintain relative to the benefit and doesn't
help you for mobile systems on foreign networks that don't run this kind of
DNS, and the third one depends on software that has various problems as
noted.

Hi,
bad news... i went to the IRC #xorg-devel as suggested and asked to airlied

18:19 mcogoni and it displays a lot of noisy vertical bands
18:19 mcogoni when the resolution is over 1024x768
18:20 mcogoni the integrated graphics is a Sis Mirage 1 or Sis 662 I think
18:20 mharris Good chance a given expert may be counting sheep right now
mind you... ;o)
18:20 mcogoni bah...
18:21 mcogoni the point is that a driver solving this problem exists from sis
18:22 mcogoni but apparently nobody upstream is including this fix
18:22 airlied yeah nobody has taken the time to merge the SiS stuff into the
Xorg stuff
18:22 mcogoni exactly airlied, is there any hope for the future?
18:23 airlied not unless someone does it, nobody maintains SiS
18:23 airlied and SiS don't seem interested in updating it
18:23 mcogoni uhm, ok...
18:23 airlied I started playing with diffs last year
18:24 airlied the diff is quite large though.
18:25 mcogoni so very few chances
18:26 airlied if someone identified the fix it would be easy
18:26 airlied the problem is we just have a full code tree from SiS.

Ok, if you don't see those strings, then you have a different bug, if you have
one at all, since you mentioned that the latest snapshot worked for you.

If you can reproduce your bug, please open a new bug report for it.

I would still very much appreciate if anyone can confirm they're still
seeing strings like 20some_deviceregular on the partitioning page.

Thanks!

[Bug 333644] Re: [i915] no valid modes on LVDS / ASUS M6A notebook

2009-03-16 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you MichaL. This definitely tells us that the problem is that xorg
can't read the EDID information.

Do you still have a working copy of Hardy around? If you don't have it
installed, you may download a LiveCD and try it. Hardy has two drivers that
would work with this card, the older i810 and the newer intel. You can switch
between the two by adding
  Driver intel
or
  Driver i810
in the Device section of xorg.conf (I'm not sure which one is the default).

The i810 driver is discontinued and therefore not available in newer ubuntu
versions. It would be great to know if both drivers work in Hardy or only the
i810. If the intel driver works, I would like you to also add
 Option ModeDebug true
to the Device section of your xorg.conf and upload the log file
/var/log/Xorg.0.log and the same EDID related information as you just did for
jaunty. Actually, if it only works with i810, it may be useful to have that
information in that case as well.

[Bug 343311] Re: cannot log into primary gmail email account...secondary account shows

2009-03-16 Thread Drew Meigs
Seeing as this is an issue with a gmail account and not one related to
Ubuntu, I am closing this bug as invalid. As I see this has been
converted to a question already, I am taking no further action. Thank
you for your contribution.

[Bug 342383] Re: cracklib2 needs to be rebuild with Python 2.6

2009-03-16 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package cracklib2 - 2.8.13-7

---
cracklib2 (2.8.13-7) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Jan Dittberner ]
  * debian/control: remove duplicate Priority field of python-cracklib
and Section field of libcrack2
  * remove debian/libcrack2.postinst and debian/libcrack2.postrm as
their functionality is automatically generated by debhelper

  [ Alessio Treglia ]
  * debian/rules: Include /usr/share/python/python.mk and use py_sitename_sh
macro, so that installation will work correctly with the forthcoming
Python 2.6 as well. (LP: #342383)

cracklib2 (2.8.13-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * add more verbose descriptions to libcrack2-dev and python-cracklib
(fixes Lintian info)
  * change debhelper dependency to (= 7) to allow the use of dh_prep and make
lintian happy
  * debian/control: switch Vcs-Browser to viewsvn

cracklib2 (2.8.13-5) unstable; urgency=low

  * add debian/cracklib-runtime.triggers to get triggered by installation
of dictionary files
  * add trigger support to debian/cracklib-runtime.postinst and change
code structure to avoid duplication
