[Bug 543943] Re: Boot failure

2010-07-22 Thread Ari
OP: Did you fix your problem? today we attempted an apt-get update /
upgrade of our two ubuntu servers and one of is now dead with this
sympton.

This is really bad. I never had a problem with ubuntu-desktop! This is
affecting our production environment and we may need to go away from
ubuntu-server if we can't solve this soon.

Any hint would be appreciated...

[Bug 608881] [NEW] package brother-lpr-drivers-laser1 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: conflicting packages - not installing brother-lpr-drivers-laser1

2010-07-22 Thread Stephen Phillips
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brother-lpr-drivers-laser1

It is saying it is conflicting with this package: mfc8840dlpr

I am trying to remove it:

s...@pecan:~$ sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/info/mfc8840dlpr.postrm

I looked here for help:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1073486

It didn't work.

This worked:

s...@pecan:~$ sudo dpkg --purge --force-remove-reinstreq mfc8840dlpr
dpkg: warning: overriding problem because --force enabled:

Then, my printer driver installed (brother-cups-wrapper-laser1). This
was very weird. It may have had something to do with trying to follow
these directions: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=278923 I
deemed those too old and abandoned them, but maybe I did something to
install that mfc8840dlpr while I was messing around with it. I'll give
this driver from the repository a shot and see where that gets me.

My desktop PC is also affected by this bug.
I have a ATI Radeon HD5850 in my pc and compiz was slow as hell... It runs a
lot slower than on my laptop with an integrated Intel card... this should
really be solved.

@Ald Gaida. Thank you very much! The xorg-server package from your ppa
did the trick. My desktop is lightening fast now!

@Ubuntu developers: Please look into this bug. It really is a
showstopper for new users with ATI cards.

[Bug 591909] Re: preseed Lucid with RAID and LVM fails to boot

2010-07-22 Thread LuisMondesi
Finally! The solution for #2 is to do:

partman/alignment=cylinder

After this bootparam (in pxelinux.cfg/default), mdadm did the right
thing and the system booted just fine.

Note that this is done on 2 different x86_64 systems:

1. Sun workstation Ultra20 m2
2. HP xw4600

Both have 2 SATA disks of the same size and same manufacturer.

I'm glad that this is finally resolved!

[Bug 608894] [NEW] dash does not handle ^C trap the same way that bash does

2010-07-22 Thread Andrew Tannenbaum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dash

The problems with making /bin/sh symlink to dash instead of bash are
known (#141481), but I haven't seen this particular problem reported
yet.

dash and bash process the ^C (INT) signal differently. Try running the
following script (then type ^C) with both bash and dash:

tint() { echo int; }
thup() { echo hup; }
tchld() { echo chld; }
tterm() { echo term; }
texit() { echo exit; }

# trap tint INT
trap thup HUP
trap tchld CHLD
trap tterm TERM
trap texit EXIT

echo type ^C...
sleep 100

bash triggers the EXIT. dash triggers no trap.

If you uncomment the INT trap, bash triggers INT and EXIT, and dash
triggers INT, CHLD, and EXIT.

I don't know what POSIX dictates or which is correct, I am guessing that
any exit should trigger EXIT (so dash is wrong).

Either way, the shells behave differently, and the difference is causing
problems in existing Ubuntu scripts. (I found it in /usr/bin/xeno-
test.)

these ups-things aren't started completely, after reboot I get UPS
mge...@localhost is unavailable, so I have to run /etc/init.d/nut start
 and then it works.

there can be several reasons. but the first that comes to mind is some
serial port privileges issue at startup: check
/usr/share/doc/nut/README.Debian.gz, section (II) Installation - device
port permissions. mge-utalk may fail to switch to the nut user if the
permissions are set *after* nut startup.

This is my /etc/default/nut:
 # start upsd
 START_UPSD=yes
 # start upsmon
 START_UPSMON=yes

once more, this file is now replaced by /etc/nut/nut.conf.
this one must contain the line:
MODE=standalone

please confirm that you have done this.

[Bug 608898] [NEW] PiTiVi has problems to switch from one video track to another when they follow each other

2010-07-22 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pitivi

When I load multiple videos and static images into the project area,
this is the behaviour I'm getting:

When a video track reaches it's end or when the other one begins, the
view gets stuck at this point, for a couple of seconds. The problem is
present when more videos follow each other in one project, or when a
video is followed by a static image. Switching from a static image to
another static image goes fluently.

Of course, this might be because of my weak hardware. On the other hand,
I can even play a video during the rendering and neither the video, nor
the rendering gets jerky, so probably my hardware is catching up,
nonetheless. The problem will probably be in PiTiVi, which gets
overloaded.

[Bug 577608] Re: Wacom: xsetwacom don't work in Ubuntu Lucid

2010-07-22 Thread Hendrik Grahl
An interesting update to this is that this will work:
xsetwacom set Wacom Intuos4 8x13 pad Button8 KEY period
But this will not:
xsetwacom set Wacom Intuos4 8x13 pad Button8 KEY .

I have not found a resource that gives a complete listing of characters
to key names (comma is another one that works). This still leaves at
least the issues of touchstrips/wheels.

I launched banshee, always the grey window.
I restart the computer, Banshee's come back.

It's not the first time this bug happens on my computer.
Each time I purge/reinstall banshee, removed all banshee related file
and restart the computer.

In fact, before this bug happen (grey window only mode), the covers
wallpaper and the song were not sync and unknown albums had a cover
of...madonna.
I think change in the media-art directory could produce my bug...

[Bug 594976] Re: GDM stop working (loop login)

2010-07-22 Thread FeNik
Well, after a lot of days (and 4 format), I've my own Lucid tuned and
completely upgraded; more, I've finally find the bug by myself: my wrong
was to tried to have not Evolution and any related lib as my mail client: IT'S
IMPOSSIBLE If you remove program and all the related libs, one of them stop
GDM with no way to restart it.
Like Microsoft had done before with Internet Explorer, may be Canonical decided
to force every Lucid user to have Evolution installed, even not used (and
Gwibber too: look how many related bugs...).

This is not exactly UBUNTU WAY...

However this system is really good, so I'll take in this way hoping for
no more Microsoft forced suggestions...

Bug is solved to me, I leave others decide if to close it or not.
Thanks however to all that replied.

[Bug 572791] Re: php5 is 5.3, but not fully supported by Drupal6

2010-07-22 Thread jokerejoker
The suggested changes to php.ini does not seems to work as intended..

The problem actually is a more general problem with php 5.3 (As reported
below), and I therefore recommend to update php 5.3.1 to at least php
5.3.2, where the problem is solved, and maybe raise the importance of
the bug a bit ;).

[Bug 608904] [NEW] Please update to version 1.4.3 - contains a critical crash fix

2010-07-22 Thread Michael Judge
Public bug reported:

About Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 10.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename'

3) What you expected to happen
Applet to load in the panel normally on system startup.

4) What happened instead
The applet begins to consume all available memory on system startup, locking up
the system (mouse stuttering, memory and swap file fills up). It eventually
crashes.

This applet has been updated to 1.4.3 by a new maintainer.

[Bug 608898] Re: PiTiVi has problems to switch from one video track to another when they follow each other

2010-07-22 Thread Jean-François Fortin Tam
Hi, please provide your hardware specs (the CPU type/speed, the amount of RAM,
and your GPU/video card,...)
Then provide information on the video clips you are using (codec, resolution)
and the project resolution settings.

If it renders fine, then it's quite possibly your hardware being unable
to keep up with live playback in pitivi. Know, however, that there are
some known performance problems (see
http://wiki.pitivi.org/wiki/Performance_problems_in_0.13.4 ). Work is
ongoing to solve these performance issues.

sure I want to remove splash since it has quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux
and I've had problems with the fan not switching off.

[Bug 602071] Re: dell fingerprint reader not working at all

2010-07-22 Thread invitu
I have same problem with my dell e6410

the goal of update-usbids was too show more details in lsusb command.
can you check for the model of your fingerprint reader by typing sudo lsusb

mine is :
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0a5c:5801 Broadcom Corp. BCM5880 Secure Applications
Processor with fingerprint swipe sensor

For the moment, I did not find any driver for that device. I guess it's
the reason why thinkfinger/fprint tools don't find the device

[Bug 592787] Re: Add some sort of hint that the Ubuntu circle is click-able

2010-07-22 Thread Mirco Müller
Just verified by reading the launcher ix spec again. In section 4.6.3 is
the remark I recall. Indeed a list with parameter-values for color-
values (e.g. like the blue-value in section 4.6.2), spacing, margins,
radii etc is always a great help simplifying the implementation.
Schematics with values to fill in, like I handed you (Otto) this
afternoon, are the most efficient way of passing that info. It
eliminates any room for interpretation and keeps the focus on the
implementation.

[Bug 568611] Re: Screen brightness control fails on Dell Studio 1558

2010-07-22 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Dell Studio 155x users take note: I have created a PPA specifically
targeted to the Dell Studio 155x laptop. This PPA includes the
experimental i915 brightness patch, as well as other useful
experimental patches relevant to the Dell Studio 155x:

  https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/linux-kamal-dellstudio

Users of other machines who want the i915 brightness patch should
continue to use the non-Dell specific PPA:

Thanks for your feedback and your patience, folks.

[Bug 219385] Re: File filters can make file selection dialog too wide for screen

2010-07-22 Thread leonidas
I just wanted to report that this bug also appears on my computer when i am
using a web-fax-service in firefox. This website lets me upload lots of
different file types to use as a fax, thus also the file choose dialog gets too
long...
And this is definitely not a problem only happening in netbooks or systems with
low display resolution, if there are enough file types in the filter list (as
in the case of the fax-service), then it will also happen on normal desktops.

2010-07-22 Thread Julien Lavergne
Thanks for your bug report.

It's seems similar to bug 567957. Could you try to disable KMS and try
again ? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting for details.

** Changed in: lxterminal (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed = Incomplete
