[Bug 398844] [NEW] Search label does not have a mnemonic/access key

2009-07-13 Thread Andrew Conkling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-app-install

The Search dialog in Add/Remove, while focused by default, should have a
mnemonic for easy access once unselected.

The GNOME HIG suggests to give all labelled components an access key
(underlined letter), with the exception of toolbar controls which would
use up too many access key combinations.

[Bug 364562] Re: banshee failed to import non-ascii character in mp3 id3tag

Sorry I'm a bit late, but I think this was perhaps due to encoding of

anyway, but just for posterity. :)

[Bug 351597] Re: Stop playing when play queue empty

2009-03-30 Thread Andrew Conkling
This was a bug in past versions, but was fixed last October. It's possible
you're still using a version that predates that fix though; which version are
you using?
Also, as I just mentioned upstream, there is some unintuitive behavior that
happens with the Play Queue:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=547213#c8:
There are two cases of how to handle playback once the Play Queue empties.
Case 1: Banshee is stopped; items are added to the Queue:
 1. When you press Play, Banshee will play items from the Queue.
 2. When the Queue is empty, playback will stop.

 Case 2: Banshee is playing from a source (e.g. Music Library, a playlist);
 items are added to
 the queue:
 1. When the current song finishes, playback switches to the Queue.
 2. When the Queue is empty, playback will return to the previous source.

To stop playback when using the Queue, the only way I know to do that is to
make sure Banshee is stopped before starting the Queue, which (for me) has
meant restarting Banshee. Pausing will not work, because the playback source
 is
still marked active when the Queue takes over.

Not quite what happened. I had started vino-server manually, then quit it.
Then, separately, I re-enabled the automatic support that I had initially
disabled (via gconftool).

So: when starting vino manually, it works fine; when started through Remote
Desktop/gconf, it works but uses all the CPU.

Yes, quite sure. `ps -A | grep vino` returns nothing, but then immediately

2009-03-10 Thread Andrew Conkling
Thanks for reporting this. There have been some upstream fixes to the
1.4 series that have made this better. Could you possibly try the PPA
version? It's available here: https://launchpad.net/~banshee-

there.

For reference, there's still an open bug here, but I'm not sure whether

Thanks for the fast response! I am working remotely right now (only have VNC

I re-enabled vino in the Remote Desktop preferences and immediately the

[Bug 322781] Re: banshee doesn't save new last.fm stations

2009-03-09 Thread Andrew Conkling
Jonne,
I just sought clarification upstream, and apparently this was fixed after 1.4.3
also. It will be available in the first 1.5 release.

Also, Fix Committed does not imply any release in Ubuntu. (That status
is confusing to me since we're tracking the bug upstream already, but
there it is.)

In the meantime, it can be requested for a backport once it's released
(9.10?) or specifically patched to fix this bug, though I'm not sure how
the latter process works.

The thing that confuses me about Launchpad is that it's not clear what

Right, which is why Banshee in Ubuntu is marked as Fix Committed (meaning
the fix has been committed to the source tree of the project—Banshee
itself.)

If we're talking about Banshee upstream, it
seems like it is. It's probably frustrating for upstream too to see bug
reports still open while they did their job with fixing them.

Launchpad tracks everything. So you'll see the Banshee line at the top,
which is coming from the upstream bug, marked Fix Released. The developers
use an external bugtracker, Bugzilla, and only see their bug as being fixed.
No frustration for them.

So if I want to have this thing fixed for me personally I'll just have
to get it from cvs and try to compile? (I tried this before, but I seem
to have failed miserably, I'll probably need to get help on IRC for
 this).

Yes, only if you want the fix in the immediate short-term. My guess is that
it will be fixed pretty quickly since it's been committed (the Banshee
maintainers do a great job packaging fixes and new versions).

If you're inclined to install the development version, you can find
instructions here: http://banshee-project.org/download/development. If you
run into trouble, please don't post here, but feel free to seek help
directly: http://banshee-project.org/about/contact.

Someone else can speak for me, but I think a SRU or backport would be the
correct procedure here. Someone would have to approve an SRU (as per the
procedure here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure), but
if rejected, it can be requested as a backport:

Frankly though (and I don't know everything, so don't quote me on this), I
doubt that xorg-xserver would be backported since it's a core package.

Set a language at the gdm screen, and when prompted, tell it to make
this new language/locale the default for your user, and it adds
information to that effect to your ~/.dmrc Then, next time that user
logs in, they get that chosen language/locale. Such a user will find
that their shell locale is correct, too, when they open up a terminal
window. Job done. User does not need to care where the info is stored
or how it works. User never edits a ~/.anything file! It just works.

Right, the problem is when you want to mix and match locales. In my
situation, I simply want to change my time to 24-hour and my first weekday
to Monday, but retain everything else in en_US. Since GNOME does not offer
any way to do this, shell environment variables are the only way I know how
to do this.

Do you really truly need more that this? Is there really a bug here?
If so, what exactly is the bug?

That I cannot customize my locale settings within a language (specifically
changing the time mode and first weekday, but I could not change any other
setting either).

If you have a question (as opposed to a bug), then you could try using
LaunchPad Answers to ask it, and see if you get a solid answer to it
there. It might be good to phrase the question in terms of the user
requirement how do I achieve result X, rather than in terms of the
method how do I get GNOME to read locale settings from shell
initialization file Y, for best results.

I'm inclined to think there's a bug (as I mentioned above) mainly because no
one seems to know how to do this in GNOME. Missing/undiscoverable
functionality is still a bug.

But fair enough; I should exhaust all resources:
https://answers.launchpad.net/gnome-common/+question/60699

Interestingly, I found this question, which doesn't really shed any light at
all: https://answers.launchpad.net/gnome-common/+question/6311

If no further information comes to light in the next 48 hours, I will report
this upstream and work with other GNOME BugSquad members to triage it.

Jaunty is in a state of near-constant flux at the moment because of package
updates, and often you'll find that one package update will be available
that conflicts with another. In this case, it's possible that the nvidia
update conflicted with xorg, thus asking it to be removed.

It's probably not best to run Jaunty if you're not prepared for these
growing pains, and you definitely have to be sure to review your updates
to see what will be removed by updating items.

wrote:

My change to the summary line was trying (apparently inadequately, since
you undid it!) to suggest that the issue is not really locale settings
not respected by Gnome. Locale settings most definitely *are*
respected by Gnome, when they are set in /etc/environment, or when set
 from the gdm login screen.

Rephrasing a bit: the issue being reported is (as I understand it[...]):
Gnome does not use locale settings which are set
in the user's shell initialization file.

Sorry! I've updated the status to reflect that. I was simply trying to say
that the problem is not Bash-specific. But I see your point

The question then becomes: Should Gnome in fact examine and use such
settings, since Gnome does not itself necessarily use any per-session
shell at all! Why would Gnome be expected to look in a user's shell
initialization file? Is there documentation out there that says it
 should or will do so?

Good question. I've simply been assuming, intuitively, that my shell
initialization is where I put all environment variables, commands to be run
on login, etc.

(A quick test showed that my `echo foobar Desktop/filename` that I
added to ~/.zshrc was run once when logging into Gnome, so I don't think my
assumption is too far off? That discovery is confusing.)

I am not sure there is really
much of a case for saying that Gnome *should* be parsing shell
initialization files to look for locale settings -- is there? I'm open
to hearing the argument that it should really do that, but trying to
look at this from the user's viewpoint, I don't (yet?) see why it
 should.

I think the point isn't that Gnome should look for locale settings, but that
it should parse anything in the shell's initialization file once and only
once.

The shell respects the locale settings set in the global environment and
its initialization file(s); Gnome respects the locale settings in the
global environment and it is own initialization files. (For example,
have you considered setting locale-related variables in ~/.xsession, if
you want to explore this kind of thing? Maybe in ~/.dmrc ??)

No, I haven't tried any of this; I've researched the topic a half dozen
times over the years and have found scant documentation/explanation. I even
brought it up on the seemingly ignored gnome-list—and, of course, got no
answers:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-list/2008-September/msg3.html.

Logically, if you are using a GUI, then you set its locale at GUI
session startup, just as you would set a shell's locale at shell
startup. Each has a different way to specify its initial settings
(though of course both respect the global environment).

 Does this make sense?

Yes, I suppose. But that leaves the question: where do I put environment
variables that apply to me, i.e. in a graphical setting and a terminal
one? /etc/environment is not appropriate (I'm only changing the locale
settings for my username) and I've never heard about anything else other
than what you mention above. :) If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear
them!

I'm reopening this, but I understand why you set it to Incomplete for the
time being. I'm still convinced *something* is not clear, but it could
easily be my understanding of login/profile/variable initialization. But if
this isn't a bug, I'd think there should be some documentation somewhere
explaining why (not).

[Bug 322781] Re: banshee doesn't save new last.fm stations

2009-01-29 Thread Andrew Conkling
Does it return if you click on the Last.fm icon (i.e. the parent icon of
the available stations)?

[Bug 322781] Re: banshee doesn't save new last.fm stations

2009-01-29 Thread Andrew Conkling
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=548524 seems to indicate this
was fixed more recently than I expected. You could try using the Banshee
PPA (https://launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+archive/ppa), but I expect
this was fixed after 1.4.2.

If your issue appears to be different than what is mentioned upstream,
let me know.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the PPA version isn't new enough. If you would like to
try the development version, instructions are here:
http://banshee-project.org/download/development. Help with installing that
is outside the scope of this bug or Launchpad in general, but you can feel
free to direct any questions to the mailing list (where Chow Loong Jin and I
join others in helping with Banshee):

[Bug 300440] Re: Open/Save dialog boxes sometimes don't expand

2009-01-21 Thread Andrew Conkling
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 75324 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/75324

How could this be a duplicate of a bug that predates Hardy? I think
there are separate issues here, and this one seems to be a regression.

Deed is done, and that bug seems to account for this issue, but I don't
think it was a duplicate in the first place.

[Bug 103994] Re: Banshee unable to correctly sort via Album title

2008-12-19 Thread Andrew Conkling
Valentin, which version are you using?

Also, from bug 144173, there is a suggestion to fill in the track
metadata (i.e. Track Count). Can someone show a screenshot or use
exiftool to show the metadata from some of the incorrectly sorted
tracks?

Also, can anyone try backing up/moving their database
(~/.config/banshee-1/banshee.db) and importing your music again? This
kind of problem seems to happen with a corrupted database. *Please*, do
not delete your database; we can probably fix the problem if it does
seem to be corrupt. I just want to help determine if the problem is with
Banshee or the database.

Could you possibly try with another DAAP server (e.g. Tangerine) to see
if it could possibly be a Firefly problem? I've had some curious
problems with Firefly that turned out to be server-related?

Contrary to Sarah's assertion, setting focus_on_map to false in

So could you provide a patch so others can test? Instructions here:
