[Bug 1939467] [NEW] GIMP crashes when I tried closing a dock

2021-08-10 Thread Benedict Afiemo
Public bug reported:

Recently did the following.
1. Upgraded linuxmint 19.2 to 19.3
2. Upgraded GIMP 2.8 to 2.10 using the Kesselgulasch PPA

I noticed that after the update, GIMP retained the UI layout of the
previous version. While attempting to rearrange the layout to something
more manageable, I tried closing an exisint dock and it crashed.

[Bug 1422626] Re: Terminal not maximized when tiling

2021-05-06 Thread Benedict
If it helps, I've put the following code in my .bashrc

if [ "$DISPLAY" ]; then
 activ_win_id=`xprop -root _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW`
 activ_win_id=$(echo $activ_win_id | awk '{ activ_win_id=substr($0,41,9); print
activ_win_id; }' )
 xprop -id $activ_win_id -remove WM_NORMAL_HINTS
fi

I think this removes the WM_NORMAL_HINTS from any terminal emulator.
Xfwm then manages to tile the terminal window without gaps, and the
tiles are filled correctly.

[Bug 1872229] [NEW] screen backlight can't be changed

2020-04-11 Thread Benedict Hartmann
Public bug reported:

Hi,
changing the screen brightness in the Ubuntu settings does not change the
brightness of the screen.
Changing the brightness for example with the fn keys changes the value in
/sys/class/backlight/dell_backlight/brightness but not the screen brightness.
There is also a /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight but changing the
brightness file there manually also has no effect.

The acpi_backlight=vendor option did not work out.

[Bug 1427981] Re: pthread_join failure

2018-02-02 Thread Jan-Benedict Glaw
I saw ESRCH problems on one of our applications, which unfortunately
leads to aborts() from within libmicrohttpd under certain circumstances.

Looking at your sample code, I guess that its main problem is the way
you're receiving the thread return value off pthread_join(). Look
carefully at it, you're getting a void * assigned to an integer
(submitted through the void ** supplied to pthread_join())! So that int
shall hold all of a pointer, which formally won't work, and may or may
not work, depending on whether or not you're on a 32 bit architecture.
You are, however, on a amd64 host, so the program isn't correct here.
-f{no-,}stack-protector may change the stack layout, that's why you're
seeing differences in testcase execution.

That said, on success, your index variable (i) is overwritten by the
NULL pointer received from the thread function on success. That's why
you always start with i=0 after a successful pthread_join().

That, unfortunately, invalidates the test case, and I need to continue
to find the root cause of my very own problem. ;-)

[Bug 1742603] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-26.29~16.04.2 Causing Crash

2018-01-11 Thread Benedict Brown
I am seeing the same problem I think. The system crashes on boot in
kernel 4.13.0-26-generic in Ubuntu , but boots fine on
4.10.0=42-generic.  I have a Dell Precision T3600 with a Xeon E5-1620
CPU. ecause the system doesn't boot (even in recovery mode), I cannot
run apport-bug to file detailed logs. I can upload a screenshot of the
crash if necessary.

What I can report from memory is that the crash comes from dereferencing
a NULL. On my most recent attempt, the last [Ok] message before the
crash related to the sound card, and another one comes up after the
error message related to the keyboard. Then everything freezes. I have
no reason to believe that either of these modules is actually the
culprit.

[Bug 1418552] [NEW] dhclient uses lots of memory on systems with many interfaces

2015-02-05 Thread Jan-Benedict Glaw
Public bug reported:

This is with 4.2.4-7ubuntu12, but since there's not a lot of code
changing in ISC dhcpd (and its client), I guess this is a quite general
problem: We're currently preapring a box to test a captive portal, thus
this system has a hugh amount (ie. 1000) interfaces bridged to a
physical network port.

Calling dhclient (with a custom script to configure the different
interfaces independently by using non-default routing tables) works
perfectly find for the first few interfaces. However, when there are
already a few hundred interfaces up, it takes longer and longer for each
new dhclient instance to get an IP address.

As strace reveals, it seems dhclient scans all interfaces, even several
times, during start-up. I guess that it prepares data for each interface
that's already configured with an IP address, thus wasting a lot of
memory for no good. This should be reported upstream.

** Affects: isc-dhcp (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

Re: [Bug 1212419] Re: [CMI8786 - Xonar DG, playback] volume always 100% at startup

2014-08-09 Thread Benedict Holland
Interesting. This is an ancient bug that probably has a really quick fix or
was already solved. This is actually so old that I have replaced my sound
card with a much better one with awesome drivers. It is possible this was a
duplicate but at the time of filing, I searched and nothing came up.

2013-09-08 Thread Eric Benedict
I had a similar issue; however, my '/' file system in reality only had
around 7% of a 200GB partition full. I mention in reality, because df
reported that 0 blocks were free and it was 100% full !?! After lots of
dinking around to delete old linux images and rebooting, it eventually
and for no apparent reason started to properly show the free space...
Rebooting again to get rid of the overflow /tmp, then everything
proceeded OK...

[Bug 1199959] Re: Xorg freeze

2013-08-15 Thread Benedict Holland
My initial prognosis of not working on UEFI is incorrect. I think it is
the upgrade to 13.10 or 13.04. My laptop sometimes has this same problem
and UEFI is not enabled on it. This is a very bad intermittent bug. My
computer cannot start up. I honestly do not understand why it has been
about a month and the bug has not even been given any priority. At one
point I had to reboot 20 times, rebooted into safe mode, rebooted again,
and it magically worked. Not being able to intermittently use a computer
seems to be about as serious a bug as you can get without having
something eat your hard drives or corrupt your file system. If you need
help fixing this bug, please let me know.

Oh it should also be noted that I have two sound cards. I have onboard

setting is saved with the onboard audio as it is terrible and I don't
use it.

[Bug 1199959] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2013-07-10 Thread Benedict Holland
Public bug reported:

I am following this link:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen

This seems to only happen after I switched to UEFI booting from normal
booting on the same computer with the same hardware and same OS version.
The problem (I think) is happening in step 6. I don't think this is an
xorg bug but I don't know what package this goes with.

Every so often I will turn on my computer, it will boot, and not display
a splash screen. I changed boot parameters in /etc/default/grub to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=drm.debug=0x4 plymouth:debug

It will boot and display a mess of startup text like normal. It will
then pause for a second, the text on the screen will change (I think it
is switching resolutions), it will flicker and die. I get a black but
active screen. The LED on the monitor doesn't denote inactivity but
active and black. Here is the output of /var/log/plymouth-debug.log. I
turned on debugging and had to reboot 4 times before the screen wasn't
black. This bug is almost always reproducible.

Oh, of more interesting note, I added nomodeset to the startup but that
played havoc with unity. I had a gray or black bar on the left section
of the screen where the application bar hides and nothing could
overwrite it fully. I could have a cursor light up a few characters in
this section but withdrawing the window from this section turned it back
to solid gray. However, it did boot flawlessly.

[Bug 882699] Re: Déjà Dup fails with Got status code 500 when starting backup

2012-08-06 Thread Benedict Holland
There was another strange bug which happened when I created a new backup
folder, it wouldn't backup. It would sit there a spin and use all of my
ram and eventually crash my computer. I didn't back up for about 2
months which was terribly disappointing and very dangerous for me. I
wish someone had said that this is the fix:

1) log onto the Ubuntu One account and remove from sink all of your backup
folders
2) start Backup (deja-dupe)
3) configure it to back up whatever folders you want
4) hit start and this will create a new fresh backup.

This is not ideal as it wipes the previous set and the upload of around
15GB isn't a trivial amount of time but this is far better than getting
a 500 error or crashing my computer. Hopefully a new backup will not be
required every time I upgrade ubuntu but for now it seems to work well.

[Bug 882699] Re: Déjà Dup fails with Got status code 500 when starting backup

2012-06-27 Thread Benedict Holland
Adding to the fray. This worked perfectly for me in 11.12 and broke in
12.04 apparently with the upgrade. I am creating a new folder and
changing backup location. This bug should be considered critical mostly
because users (such as myself) do pay for this service and the nature of
this service is critical.

If you need any more help with testing this let me know. I can reproduce
this bug every time on my system which is the default setup directly
from install of 11.04 and currently runs 12.04.

[Bug 837745] [NEW] broken ld-lsb* symlinks

2011-08-30 Thread Stew Benedict
Public bug reported:

With the re-organization for multi-arch, the ld-lsb* symlinks in /lib64
on x86_64 point to non-existent files:

root@ubuntu-latest-64:~# ls -l /lib64
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 2011-08-23 18:14 ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 -
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-2.13.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 2011-08-30 18:06 ld-lsb-x86-64.so.2 -
/lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 2011-08-30 18:06 ld-lsb-x86-64.so.3 -
/lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

The latter 2 are in red, as broken symlinks in my terminal:

root@ubuntu-latest-64:~# file /lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.2
/lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.2: broken symbolic link to `/lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2'

root@ubuntu-latest-64:~# file /lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.3
/lib64/ld-lsb-x86-64.so.3: broken symbolic link to `/lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2'

Consequently, LSB compliant apps fail to run, and the distribution test suite
has a series of catastrophic
failures, showing no result for many of the tests.

[Bug 798192] [NEW] install_initd fails

2011-06-16 Thread Stew Benedict
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lsb

This just started yesterday. I do continual LSB testing of Ubuntu-
latest, usually once a week or so. The lsb-apache package (part of the
application battery, part of the distro certification tests) runs the
following scripts at install/uninstall:

/usr/lib/lsb/install_initd /etc/init.d/lsb-apache
/usr/lib/lsb/remove_initd /etc/init.d/lsb-apache

Running the latter on the current system, when alien/dpkg installs the
package yields:

 root@ubuntu-latest-32:~# /usr/lib/lsb/install_initd /etc/init.d/lsb-apache
Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/lib/lsb/install_initd, line 3, in module
import sys, re, os, initdutils
  File /usr/lib/lsb/initdutils.py, line 18
raise ValueError, 'need a file or string'
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

I'm also seeing failures in the core-test init tests, which could be
related to this same issue, as they also install/remove a couple of
dummy init scripts and look at the starup/shutdown dependency stack.

[Bug 402962] Re: Notify OSD should not rely on applications that inhibit the screensaver

2011-06-02 Thread Benedict Etzel
This can still be reproduced in the current 11.04 simply by using
caffeine and setting it to Prevent screensaver. So this indeed seems
to be a problem on the notify-osd-side rather than an application error.

[Bug 785318] [NEW] programs segfault trying to dlopen libQtOpenGL

2011-05-19 Thread Stew Benedict
Public bug reported:

This originally surfaced in LSB testing (lsblibchk) and a similar bug
was reported against Debian

ref:
http://bugs.linuxbase.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3233
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=518131

The test case attached in the Debian bugs illustrates the problem:

stew@ubuntu-latest-32:~$ gcc -o dltest -ldl dltest.c
stew@ubuntu-latest-32:~$ ./dltest /usr/lib/libQtOpenGL.so.4
libQtOpenGL.so.4 libQtOpenGL.so.4.7libQtOpenGL.so.4.7.2
stew@ubuntu-latest-32:~$ ./dltest /usr/lib/libQtOpenGL.so.4
opening /usr/lib/libQtOpenGL.so.4...
closing /usr/lib/libQtOpenGL.so.4...
Segmentation fault

This appears to be unique to Ubuntu (for libchk anyway), I'm not having
issues on other distributions with the same version of Qt.

[Bug 697632] [NEW] lsb-invalid-mta should probably include the /usr/lib/sendmail link also

2011-01-05 Thread Stew Benedict
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lsb-invalid-mta

While the lsb-invalid-mta provides a dummy /usr/sbin/sendmail, I'm seeing
core-test failures looking for the symbolic link
/usr/lib/sendmail - /usr/sbin/sendmail

The package should probably also provide this.

[Bug 661916] [NEW] Xorg freeze before login

2010-10-16 Thread Benedict Holland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I assume this is an xorg problem because when I boot up sometimes it is
starting xserver and then I get a black screen with a _ in the upper
right hand corner. The error in the log is:

[70.814]
Fatal server error:
[70.814] xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call
[70.814]
[70.814]

I see that this is not a new problem but this is brand new for me in ubuntu
10.10. In 10.04 I never had this problem, this is the 3rd time this has
happened to me in 2 days. It seems to happen about 1/3 of the time, always with
the same error.
I am reporting this a new bug because I didn't see anywhere that it was
happening with an Intel based chipset, only ATI. Feel free to contact me if you
need me to do anything including altering and compiling code. I just don't know
what to chance source code wise or where to change it.

Below are the outputs of lspci and lsmod in case they were not included
in the bug report.

I am running Feisty Fawn Herd 1 (AMD64), and I'm also having this issue.
The temp fix as listed above: sudo rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin worked for
me.

All apt-related commands would SEGFAULT in this scenario. I kept the
.bin files from /var/cache/apt incase I would need to reproduce this.

I am running:

apt: Version: 0.6.46.3ubuntu1
Architecture: amd64

apt-utils: Version: 0.6.46.3ubuntu1
Architecture: amd64

If I copy the .bin files back into /var/cache/apt and try to run an apt-
related command, I will get a SEGFAULT again. I can't determine if this
is still an open issue with Feisty. If it is still open, please let me
know and I will upload the .bin files.

Thanks!

If copy/pasting has mangled it to the point of being unmanagable, you
can also find it in the GNASH complete crash report at the top of this
page. It is the last argument on the line ProcCmdline:. That URL is
an embedded ad that came up while I was viewing http://www.myspace.com

I'll be glad to help if you need more information.
