[Bug 931436] [NEW] Install / upgrade failed, I can't rescue my user data

2012-02-13 Thread Brett Connor
Public bug reported:

My ununtu desktop failed to boot one day, saying no init found. I could not
get past this, including going back to previous configurations.
So I downloaded the latest version, burned a CD and tried to install that.
Booting from the CD is OK, but I can't get my old user data. The old /home/ is
extracted under some ecryptfs scheme, with instructions to run
ecryptfs-mount-private, which crashes with the message private directory is
not set up correctly.

Tried to install from the CD (before after reboot - same result) - use
the option to upgrade and keep the old user account, but the install
fails with partition manager failed with 141 - goodbye.

What does 141 mean? Is there any way I can recover that data?

2012-02-13 Thread Brett Connor
I can get my data now through ecryptfs-recover. Perhaps the README that
gets created should reference this rather than mount-private?

Still would like to be able to reuse the partition rather than have to
wipe it to upgrade, that's the main issue.

[Bug 812134] Re: Konsole + Terminus font, wrong line alignment

2012-02-09 Thread Brett Keller
I'd like to request that this bug be re-opened, please.

Harald Sitter marked this bug as invalid because it needed to be reported
upstream. However, someone has indeed reported this bug to the KDE folks here:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=284365

The discussion in that bug determined that the problem only exists in
Kubuntu, not KDE in general, so the problem needs to be fixed here.

The proposed solution in that bug is simply to update Terminus from 4.35
to 4.36, which is consistent with the workaround that Vadim Pilipenko
posted here.

I don't know whether this bug should stay with konsole, or if it needs
to be moved to xfonts-terminus, but either way, could someone please
reopen this bug so that we can get Terminus updated to the latest
version?

Thanks.

[Bug 814777] Re: Occassional mouse cursor corruption on primary display

2011-12-22 Thread Brett Trotter
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with an ATI Radeon HD 5775 and 3 heads.
Primary is 1920x1080 and the other two are 1280x1024. The primary screen
has a corrupted cursor while the others are fine. The cursor on the
primary has kind of a shadow copy and there's a several pixel line
ripped out of the middle.

[Bug 893805] Re: Live CD installer crashes after failing to install grub

2011-11-23 Thread Jon Brett
Having reviewed the logs, it is clear that I was doing something dumb in
trying to install grub on /dev/sda1 (a partition) instead of /dev/sda
(my first hard disk) (See last line of comment #3).

However, I would still expect the installer to handle this gracefully,
without crashing, so this bug still stands.

Perhaps the installer could even to provide some helpful message to set
unobservant users like me on the correct path e.g. Are you sure you
want to install grub on a partition, instead of the disk?.

[Bug 701259] Re: dell-laptop module hard blocks wifi on Dell Vostro 1520

2011-11-14 Thread Brett Sutton
I had what appeared to be exactly this problem.

When I toggle the fn-f2 key the wirless connection would appear to be
enabled but as soon as I click the 'Enable Wirless' option it would
disappear and the 'wireless connection disabled by hardware switch'
message would come up.

Whilst reading this post and in frustration I rapidly toggled the fn-f2
key (three times I think) and suddenly my wireless connection password
dialog popped open and all was fixed.

My wireless connection is now working fine (but I'm not prepared to
touch the fn-f2 key again).

I'm running 11.10. The problem only occured about two weeks after
installing 11.10 and possible after I accidently toggled the fn-f2 key.

Maybe this isn't exactly the same problem but the symptoms do appear to
be identical.

[Bug 637820] Re: 'update-manager reports errors after hard power-off with fsck corrected errors

2011-08-30 Thread Brett Green
I have very similar error,

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include
the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/fr.archive.ubuntu
.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists
or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

Again I had a hard reboot of the system after the screensaver refused to let me
back onto the system.
Everything appeared to be working but now I note the update-manager is not
working.

[Bug 304536] Re: freeze at login screen at resume after suspend

2011-08-25 Thread Brett
I am seeing this as well on natty. Like dtalk, it happens without
suspending. It seems to happen randomly about once every other day for
me. I don't know what is the difference between the times it locks the
screen saver vs when the screen saver login works fine.

[Bug 801840] Re: MCE Kernel Panic on kernel 2.6.38

2011-08-24 Thread Brett Alton
I have the exact same problem and it seems to occur for me with
2.6.38-11 but not 2.6.38-10 as often. It does not occur with 2.6.35.

I'm attaching a screenshot from my low-end Android, so I apologize for
the quality. Let me know what other info you need and I will provide it.

I can't seem to pinpoint when it occurs; I can have Firefox open,
Thunderbird open or tens of other applications going and I can't seem to
pinpoint if a certain application is the source.

[Bug 769045] Re: ubuntu 11 freezes when using torrent client for more than a few minutes

2011-08-10 Thread Brett Bittrick
I'm having a similar issue with every torrent client I've tried (Deluge,
Transmission, and Azureus). I think I've found a workaround though.
Apparently having an encrypted home directory is interfering with
torrent downloads somehow. When I moved the download folder to an
unencrypted partition it works perfectly. It could be a red herring,
but I can consistently reproduce it and all of my torrent clients
function flawlessly now. Let me know if I can be of assistance in any
way (contributing logs, running tests etc).

[Bug 769277] Re: Eclipse shows overlay scrollbar but when i hover there is no scroll handles

2011-05-24 Thread Brett Dworaczyk
I have also been having the scrollbar issue in Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit with
the repository package install of eclipse (3.5.2). Surprisingly, this
bug also caused screen artifact issues when scrolling the screen on the
project list. Lines would appear from elements previously rendered in
that position, and disappear when I moused over them. Applying the fix
from #34 not only brought back the scrollbars, but it also corrected the
screen artifacts issue. I haven't heard anyone mentioning these
artifacts before, so I though I would bring this up for anyone having
this strange issue on top of not having scrollbars. Eclipse is usable
again! Nice fix by the way.

[Bug 749811] Re: [r300] Screensaver will not complete screensaver to sleep mode, PC freezes and must be hard rebooted

2011-05-21 Thread Brett
I've found a less than satisfactory, but acceptable solution until this
bug is fixed. When I log in, the first thing I do is issue the command
xset -dpms to turn off the energy star features (standby, suspend,
off). This means I can now have my screensaver active and close the lid
on my laptop, but the screen never turns off.

Not the best solution for the monitor, but if this bug is fixed soon,
then it is acceptable for now. Has there been any headway on the root
of the problem?

[Bug 749811] Re: [r300] Screensaver will not complete screensaver to sleep mode, PC freezes and must be hard rebooted

2011-05-18 Thread Brett
Ah, I see. Then I can tell you that the command string turns off the
display for 7 seconds and then turns it back on successfully. I have
discovered that I can have the screensaver active as long as the display
never sleeps, blanks, suspends, or hibernates. So, basically, I need to
leave the lid open on my laptop at all times and disable the other
features.

[Bug 784007] [NEW] Nautilus, after upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04, opens ftp bookmarks in default web browser

2011-05-17 Thread Brett Alton
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm sure this is a bug based on a library that Nautilus uses and not
actually Nautilus (so if someone who does triage could help, that would
be much appreciated) but after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 (on my
laptop and desktop), my computers will open my Nautilus ftp:// bookmarks
in my default web browser (Chrome).

So there's some switch that happens during the upgrade, possibly Chromes
fault, but I figured I'd report it under Nautilus because that's what
I'm using to open my bookmarks.

[Bug 749811] Re: [r300] Screensaver will not complete screensaver to sleep mode, PC freezes and must be hard rebooted

2011-05-17 Thread Brett
@Tormod:

I tried your suggestion with xset. No dice. The problem is that I
can't enter that command within the session where the screen locks, I
have to change to a session other than TTY7 (where the X server is
running) in order to have interaction with the display. That means when
I type the command string you suggested, I get a message about how xset
can't interact with the display .

I've also discovered that setting the screensaver to not turn on when
idle or to not lock the desktop when the screensaver is active does not
help. The screen locks after the screen blanks, though I have not
pinned down exactly how long it takes to make the display freeze.

[Bug 749811] Re: [r300] Screensaver will not complete screensaver to sleep mode, PC freezes and must be hard rebooted

2011-05-16 Thread Brett
I'm also having a problem. I'm running the Pictures Folder screensaver.
My screen locks to screensaver after 5 minutes. No problem. I can
unlock it and go on. However, after 15 minutes, the display is put to
sleep. That is when the screen locks. Mouse and keyboard don't work
within the GUI environment after this happens. However, I found that I
can do a Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a terminal window in TTY1. This at least
allows me to log in to a new session and safely reboot the system.

In the meantime, I've set putting the display to sleep to never and
after 1.5 hours, I'm still able to use the system.

[Bug 749811] Re: [r300] Screensaver will not complete screensaver to sleep mode, PC freezes and must be hard rebooted

2011-05-16 Thread Brett
One additional comment on my issue. If I lock the screen before closing
my laptop (I set my system to blank the screen when the lid is closed)
then I'm okay. On the other hand, if I just close the lid without
locking the screen, then the screen will freeze when the screensaver
tries to start. When this happens, I can move my mouse around, but
clicks don't seem to be registered and keyboard shortcuts that interact
with the desktop do not work. I can still use the Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to
TTY1 and safely reboot the system, though.

[Bug 749811] Re: [r300] Screensaver will not complete screensaver to sleep mode, PC freezes and must be hard rebooted

2011-05-16 Thread Brett
Okay, one final comment on my issue. As it turns out, lock the screen
before closing the lid or not, it will most likely freeze the screen
once the screen is blanked or suspends. With blanking, there seems to
be a time issue: the longer the lid is closed, the more likely the
screen will freeze. I guess I'll try turning off the screensaver all
together.

[Bug 775920] Re: unity wallpaper looks corrupted after login

2011-05-12 Thread Brett Johnson
I am also experiencing this. I run dual monitors and created a new
account to test but even that sees the issue. In both cases for me, it
happens when I login on my external monitor (it's a laptop - Ubuntu sees
my internal as primary and I don't have issues on that).

I tested to see what happened when I ran only one monitor - I didn't see
the problem. Are other users seeing this also running dual monitors?

Re: [Bug 630748] Re: iwlagn degrades quickly during normal wifi session

2011-02-28 Thread Brett Howard
I just tested it using 2.6.38-rc5-git6 built myself on Ubuntu 10.10
(not the latest but damn close) and things didn't seem to tank like
they used to but they are still only transferring at about 5MB/sec
after a bit.. Now after a fresh reboot I'm getting about 9-10MB/sec.
I finally booted into windows just to test this out an it was never
seeing under ~13MB/sec. But I didn't test long as there were millions
of updates wanting to install since the last time I used it.

Anyway I'll run like this for a few days and report back...

Further information:

uname -r: 2.6.38-rc5-git6

As mentioned in comment #27, I think that Linux Kernel commit

I did not have an 802.11n capable router until fairly recently, so I
don't know if it used to work or if it had the bug before the disable-n

[Bug 696995] Re: Sudden Crash out to Login Screen

2011-02-02 Thread Brett
I believe I am seeing this issue as well within a day after a fresh
install of 10.10. I hadn't done too much from the default install, so I
thought listing what I had done might be helpful in narrowing down the
possibilities.

I do not yet have a sequence of events to trigger the issue, but I have
only had the system up for 2 days and X has died at least 10 times.

My system:
Abit AN-M2HD
AMD x2 4600+
evga nvidia geforce 210

1) installed from the amd64 alternate 10.10 cd (via usb)
2) updated packages
3) Switched to using nvidia-current
4) Turned off compiz and turned compositing on for metacity (for compatibility
with docky)
5) installed vlc, x11vnc, mplayer, smplayer, deluge, deluged, deluge-webui,
python-setuptools, flexget, ubuntu-restricted-extras, docky, gnome-do,
vdpau-va-driver, filezilla, nautilus-open-terminal, pavucontrol,
openssh-server, emacs, cron, vsftp
6) Setup 'echo options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=0 probe_mask=0x102 | sudo tee
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-hdmi.con' (required to make pulseaudio use the right
alsa sound device to get audio over hdmi working)
7)) Setup x11vnc to load as root at bootup by adding /usr/bin/x11vnc -auth
guess -o /var/log/x11vnc.log -forever -bg -rfbauth /home/belgarth/.vnc/passwd
into /etc/gdm/Init/Default
8) Setup Deluged and deluge-webui to load at bootup using the instructions at
http://dev.deluge-torrent.org/wiki/UserGuide/InitScript/Ubuntu (including
creating a new deluge user)
9) setup flexget to run every 5 seconds via crontab

I suspect the issue involves one or more of the following: flexget
running (python script), the nvidia proprietary drivers, x11vnc running
at bootup as root.

I have tried adding in X-swat updates ppa in an attempt to try to fix
the issue with no luck.

So far, the simplest sequence of events leading to the crash was after a
fresh boot, I connected via vnc and logged into the device via vnc and
let it sit there. Within an hour X reset. But I have done the same since
with no X restart.

[Bug 331681] Re: Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device

2011-01-22 Thread Brett Stahlman
 Kubuntu 10.10
 PCLinuxOS-kde-2010.12
 Both seem to work OK.

It looks as though the problem is more likely to be with Gnome.

So has the problem been reported to the Gnome developers? I've read
something elsewhere that leads me to suspect that my camera is handled
properly with another Gnome-based distribution (Foresight Linux), which
makes me wonder whether the issue could have an Ubuntu component to it.

[Bug 631759] Re: Error message: Unable to unmount the camera at this time

2011-01-20 Thread Brett Stahlman
Thanks Omer. I may end up giving that a try. Actually, though, I'm
thinking that gnome's device detection may be at least partly to blame.
It's just frustrating that the bug referenced in my earlier post has
gone unresolved (indeed unassigned) for almost 2 years, in spite of the
fact that it seems to affect a significant number of users (and probably
deters a number of would-be users from adopting Ubuntu as their primary
distribution). Since I seem to be able to import pictures with gthumb
(albeit with the error dialogs mentioned in the other post), I'll
probably just use that for now. I can import with F-Spot as well, but it
crashes routinely, apparently unable to handle the large (~1) number
of images I'm managing...

[Bug 631759] Re: Error message: Unable to unmount the camera at this time

2011-01-19 Thread Brett Stahlman
Trying to figure out whether my bug is the same as this one...
In Shotwell 0.7.2, in Ubuntu 10.10, I plug in my Kodak EasyShare C533, turn it
on, and the following pops up:

Error dialog (Qty. 1)
Unable to mount KODAK EasyShare C533 Zoom Digital Camera
Error initializating camera: -60: Could not lock the device

Choose application dialog (Qty. 2)
You have just inserted a medium with digital photos. Choose what application to
launch.

This business of duplicate choose application dialogs has been discussed on
other threads: e.g.,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/331681
(Note that that bug, which was first reported almost 2 years ago, is confirmed,
but still unassigned.)

At any rate, if I choose to open Shotwell anyway, and then click on the camera
icon within Shotwell, I get...
Shotwell needs to unmount the camera from the filesystem in order to access
it. Continue?
[Cancel/Unmount]

So is the behavior I'm seeing with Shotwell a result of bug 331681, or
will it be fixed by the fix for the bug in this thread? Also, does the
previous post imply that the fix for the bug in this thread will be seen
in Shotwell 0.8.1? When is that likely to be available in the stable
Ubuntu repository (i.e., available via Update Manager)?

Thanks,
Brett Stahlman

I notice that this bug is still marked unassigned. It's been almost 2

Sorry for back to back posts - I also noticed that libevoablx.so does
not exist:

root@calculator:/usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.2/program# ls libev*
libevtatt.so

I did a quick search and found the file:

root@calculator:/usr/lib/openoffice# find ./ -name 'libev*'
./basis3.2/program/libevtatt.so
./basis3.2/registered-components/libevoablx.so

Perhaps the file changed paths and the install script references the
wrong location to register the corresponding .so file? I don't know
enough to update the corresponding scripts or know the reason behind the
problem though.
